Heritage Coast Campsite
Heritage Coast Campsite, Monknash, Vale of Glamorgan CF71 7QQ
So you know about Snowdonia, the Gower and the Beacons, and the Pembrokeshire Coast needs little introduction. But how about the Glamorgan Heritage Coast Path? Starting from Cardiff Bay's regenerated waterfront and spanning 35 miles westwards to the seaside kitsch of Porthcawl, this stretch of Wales' recently opened national trail takes in some of the country's most spectacular scenery. The sweeping golden beaches of Whitmore Bay, the famous sand dunes of Merthyr Mawr, the innumerable charming clifftop villages – it's a wonder the area isn't positively overrun with holidaymakers year round. But hey, we're not complaining, and lucky for us we've found the perfect coastal campsite base to explore this magnificent region.
Glyn and Philippa George know a thing or two about hospitality. Having run their successful five-star B&B to much acclaim, the Georges decided to share their stunning corner of Monknash with the canvas contingent. Opening up the adjoining brook-side paddock for a trial 28 days a couple of years back, the response was so overwhelming that the ever-generous (as you'll soon discover) Glyn and Philippa realised it would be a shame to keep it to themselves. And so Heritage Coast Campsite was born.
This tents-only spot had space for just 30 privileged pitches spread across two paddocks on soft, level grass. With uninterrupted views of undulating Glamorgan hills and the sparkling Bristol Channel, you can almost hear the "oo ar"s from Devon on a clear day. Facilities are second to none, with a brand new stables block housing all the expected, immaculately clean ablutions and a fully licensed café – Teddy's Bar & Kitchen – that serves all the grub you need, from your morning cuppa and bagel right through to a sunset beer from one of Glamorgan's local breweries. The resulting campsite is a thoroughly chilled out, family-friendly site (not one for the stag or hen do!), with views to savour, a brook to meditate beside and, of course, that breathtaking coastal path to pick up. Pretty much ticks all the boxes then, eh?

It was my first attempt at camping and could not be happier that it was at Heritage Coast Campsite! The staff a wonderfully helpful and went out of their way to help a newbie and his 4yo & 6yo daughters get sorted. We will be back, no doubt.
We had a lovely 4 nights at Heritage Coast Campsite in the week leading up to Easter weekend. As it was the very start of their season we virtually had the field to ourselves, although with such lovely views and surroundings I should imagine the place does get busier. The wc/washing/washing up facilities were of a very good standard and kept spotless throughout our stay. There is a cafe on site if you fancy letting someone else do the work. Not much to purchase in the way of shopping/supplies but as mentioned it was early on and stock was due to arrive near the end of our stay. Local area and coastline is magnificent and the walk to the beach is easy and well worth it. Great to have a fire in the evening(in one of their fire pits only). Owner pulled a few strings and booked us in a very popular and hard to book local Italian restaurant(Franco's) for my birthday/our anniversary, also lovely, would recommend. Many thanks.........
Beautiful field surrounded by beautiful scenery and places. Literally you're in the country side and it is so peaceful and relaxing. Brilliant facilities and Glyn and Phillipa were wonderful to us and very, very nice people. Located close to Bridgend, Cardiff and Swansea. Breath taking coastal walks and just ultimately a perfect holiday. Me and my girlfriend will be back! Thank you!
A Cool campsite indeed
We stayed for one night in our campervan and will return - such a pretty site, great cafe and lovely walk to the beach and local pub. Super facilities and very clean Well done - you are amazing hosts and took care of every detail, you set the bar very high for our tour of Wales
Just the loveliest people and a great campsite
I can't say enough about how wonderful our week at Monknash was. Philippa and Glyn were the perfect hosts, really friendly, kind, welcoming. The site is in a perfect spot, next to the best pub in Wales (if you like cosy log fires, real ales - and it's Wales it's gonna rain and then you have the pub right there) and a stunning beach easily accessed via a magical woodland walk. The area has lots to offer in terms of day trips (St Donats, Cowbridge, Llantwit, Ogmore and Southerndown beaches) but we were so relaxed and happy here we barely moved from our spot - we had gorgeous views towards the sunset. It was the little touches that make all the difference in this site, the fantastic fire pits with logs delivered daily right to your tent, space to charge your phone, a deep freezer, about 12 hooks in the shower cubicle - which was spotless, a cosy chic little cafe with draft ales and gorgeous breakfasts and real coffee for rainy mornings when you don't want to cook, oh and also really generous sized pitches. Also if you like that sort of thing really fabulous glamping bell tents available. (I told a friend of mine who booked a bells a week later). Another bonus - they really discourage 'groups' - i.e. hen/stag parties. Their positivity rubbed off on the guests - the site is treated with respect. We were in heaven. When Philippa found out it was our wedding anniversary we were also treated to even more exceptionally kind extra gestures (which I won't detail incase they feel obliged to do this all the time!!!). We'll be back again and again. Thank you - you gorgeous people xxx
A first class site in fantastic location
We have just returned from 2 nights at this camp site and can't say enough about it. Firstly it's in the most fantastic location. We stayed in the bottom field which we shared with 1 other family and had unspoiled views of fields of cows and the distant coast. A small stream was located at the bottom of the field with picnic table for our morning coffee. The beach of Cwm Nash was a 15-20 minute walk through lovely woodland. Philippa advised us on walking the Heritage Coast and provided maps which took us on a fantastic 8 mile round trip which included Nash Point Lighthouse and St Donat's Castle & Church as well as 2 great pubs! Secondly the great on site amenities and hospitality provided by Philippa and Glyn. The cafe served an extensive breakfast menu including smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and real coffee, Movenpick ice cream, Peroni on tap and even jugs of Pimms! Phillipa made us packed lunch to take on our long walk and Glyn provided a fire pit for our return complete with fire lighters, kindling, wood and marshmallows all delivered to our tent! We will definitely be returning again soon.
Peaceful and relaxing
The owners came up trumps by listening to our request and placing us in a very secluded quiet corner of the site. They continued to be helpful and could not do enough for us throughout our whole stay. The site facilities were clean and the cafe served good food and drink and the service was always polite and friendly. We will hurry back.
Great campsite - well run!
In short, I agree with the other comments. Great facilities, good location and run by lovely people. When I say run, they actively manage the campsite and campers, which is much better than other sites I have been to recently. They uphold their campsite ethos and will have a word with guests who are noisy or start playing music etc. The onsite cafe is a real luxury and we benefited from a tasty breakfast on a damp morning and came back for lunch - good coffee is available. The main draw for us is the picturesque walk down to the beach, through meadows and woods - it's gorgeous. The beach is also great fun for kids with rock pools, fossils, some sand and the sea to spend hours exploring. Back at the campsite there are firepits for hire and firewood. The pitches on the main meadow are a good size. My only issue is that there is traffic going up and down from the bigger field at the bottom and some drivers were not going so slowly. Otherwise, lots of room to play! The owners are very helpful and their family/disabled access washroom is a good size and very handy for showers. Looking forward to coming back again!
Great facilities, lovely location, lovely people what more can you say .....
Stayed here just the one night over the past weekend. It was very easy to book our pitch online via Cool Camping. This included pre ordering a fire pit and logs. On arrival we were greeted by the owners and we were given a tour of the facilities and then offered our pitch. After setting up camp and wandering down to the beach we headed back to the café on site for much needed liquids and delicious ice cream. Cream teas were also being served and they looked outstanding.
The camp is immaculately maintained and the toilets and showers were pristine. Breakfast can be purchased from the café from 8.30 am and the options were full breakfast, a veggie alternative or scrambled eggs on toast with smoked salmon. All really tasty and very good value too.
The site is in a very secluded and quiet spot. The owners are really welcoming and accommodating. It was particularly good of them to allow us to park our car on the Sunday whilst we went to the beach again after check out.
The walk to the beach is very pleasant and not too far away. Would highly recommend the site and will definitely return. The glamping on offer looks particularly luxurious!
Had a fantastic time at this beautiful site and will definitely be returning again. Philippa, Glyn & Helen (not forgetting Teddy!) are so welcoming and they go out of their way to make sure you are well looked after. The pitches are gently sloping and are a great size so you are not crammed in. The camp site is spotlessly clean and the facilities are excellent; they also have a café selling breakfasts, lunches and snacks and more importantly – alcohol!
We hired a fire pit (which Glyn lit for us) and had great fun toasting marshmallows that we were able to purchase from the café. There is also a pub walking distance from the site that was recommended by the owners but we didn't feel the need to leave the camp site, especially when we could sit outside and watch the stunning sunsets.
The beach is walking distance from the site through a beautiful woodland and leads on to some stunning coastal walks. Couldn't ask for more.
My boyfriend and I booked last minute to stay for the Easter Bank Holiday weekend at the beautiful campsite. We were actually really surprised that Philippa and Glyn still had space seeing as they were offering a unique glamping experience!
After our five hour journey (we came all the way from the North West to be able to glamp here) we were greeted by a friendly Philippa who was eager to get us settled and provide us with anything else we may need (even offering us her own burgers!). The bell tent was brand new and absolutely breathtaking. The lovely Helen had also equipped us with fairy lights to make our romantic weekend extra special. Emm & I couldn't wait to explore the tent with Philippa, a tent which offered: a comfortable oak finished double bed with matching side tables, a giant chest, an ice box (fully equipped with ice blocks and milk courtesy of the campsite), a bench, a table and chairs set (which we later took outside to sit by the fire) and other amenities, such as playing cards, glasses, crockery and utensils, a kettle and more!
Emm had actually been a bit nervous initially as it was our first time "camping" together, myself an avid walker, meaning I've toured the UK's weird and wonderful campsites. We were both elated with the quality of the tent and its furnishings, and the welcoming staff at the campsite. I have to say, this is the best campsite I have ever stayed at. The cleanliness of the communal areas is a testament to the high standards upheld by the owners. As glampers we shared a private bathroom with the other couple in their bell tent; Philippa provided the money to work the showers. There was nothing that we wanted for whilst staying here. Even though we were provided with logs and a pit fire, and a gas stove, we thoroughly enjoyed the bed&breakfast experience daily - waking up to a freshly cooked breakfast everyday just topped off the experience! The campsite is ideally located from the beach front (10 min walk) and from local towns such as Cowbridge and Ogmore.
But on a final note, it was a glamping holiday to experience like no other! Me and my partner had such a special weekend of luxury together at the hands of The Heritage Campsite. We wish Philippa and Glyn all the best, and give Teddy a pat from us. Thank you for a lovely stay!
Be sure to have Glyn serve you some Movenpick ice cream - that was the best sorbet I've ever had.
Myself and my partner came down for the Easter bank holiday for three nights to try out the new Glamping on site from the get go we were treated with outstanding service from Glyn and Philippa and all the staff, they could not do enough for us and all the help and advise while we were here made the trip just that little bit more enjoyable. The Glamping tent had everything that we needed and was very comfortable to sleep in and more then enough space for the two of us. We would highly recommend it to any one in the future and we will certainly be back.

Sshhh! What a Find!
We have been here 2 years running for our main holiday and will be returning. We have 2 small dogs so it is wonderful to find such a doggy friendly campsite near a simply stunning, year round, doggy friendly beach. The walk down to the beach is a very leisurely 20 minute walk. A few stiles to climb and a beautiful wooded rocky path lead to a pebbly/rocky beach at high tide but a fabulous expanse of sand at low. The coastal path is spectacular to walk in either direction with a local service bus that will take you back to the site. The site is very peaceful, most days we had it to ourselves; and it has the all important fire pits and BBQs for hire with plenty of firewood to buy. The facilities are clean and the 50 pence for a shower is plenty and hot. The cafe on site is sells teas, coffee, ice cream and various other holiday necessities and we can charge our phones, use the WiFi and stay dry if it rains. There is plenty of local information and attractions for families but we find the site and beach so lovely we tend to only venture into Bridgend, to stock up on BBQ items and Beer! The freezer on site lets us keep everything cool! The owners are very welcoming and clearly take pride in their site, it is beautifully looked after and they do all they can to make your stay enjoyable. We can't recommend it highly enough. Oh..... and Teddy is a delight!
A hidden gem
What a beautiful campsite in such a beautiful location.
Writing this reveiw as I sit eating the pefrectly cooked full breakfast......What a little hidden gem of camping heaven. Close to beach and great for travelling around. Plenty of facilities. And Best of all Philipa,Glyn and team....the most fantastic hosts. Wonderful experience.
The Sloan Family.
We came down just for a night but had a lovely day, walk to the beach then some food in the pub. All you need from a campsite, all facilities good and spotless. Booking again soon.
Beautiful location, easily accessible by public transport.Warm welcome.Hot power showers.Tranquil walk to beach...stunning coastal walk.Friendly local pub with excellent range of ales and cider, fast tasty food.Ye Old Swan at Llantwit , well worth a visit, excellent food. This campsite has it all!
Fabulous camping trip!
Just returned from this campsite having been there 2 years in a row with a group of friends and their families. We all had a fantastic time yet again and will definitely be returning again next year. The owners - Philippa & Glyn & all of their staff are so welcoming, nothing is too much trouble for them and they go out of their way to make sure you are happy and have everything that you need. The campsite was full but we were given lots of space to pitch up and certainly felt that we were not crammed in so we were very pleased. The campsite is beautifully clean and the facilities are excellent, they have also this year upgraded their facilities and have opened up a cafe selling breakfasts, lunches and snacks. This was well appreciated by all of the campers and a great place to start the day (unless you are hardened campers and prefer cooking on your own stoves). We hired a BBQ and fire pits from the owners which were great fun and kept us all warm in the evening. There is also a great pub a stones throw away called "The Plough and Harrow" serving delicious food and we even enjoyed the start of a live band after eating before heading back to the campsite with the children.
The walks around this part of the world are beautiful and there is plenty to see and visit. I would highly recommend booking!
OK, but crowded
Just returned home from a weekend getaway at this site (Friday to Sunday). We arrived on a very dreary Friday afternoon and were shown to our spot (after the obligatory tour of the facilities) and our first impressions were that it looked a little cramped, personally We would have preferred a bit more space to expand our camp in to. Of course after we set the tent up the sun came out, and the following day was glorious. The facilities were clean, and were kept clean throughout our stay, but the 2 showers in the ladies and two in the gents were a little stretched seeing as the 30 pitches (in one paddock, not two) were nearly all full and there were 3 school parties in the bottom paddock. The school parties were a little noisy late into the night, but it was nice to see them all enjoying themselves.
The only place for the kids to play in the top paddock was also where cars had to drive through the campsite, so cricket stumps had to be pulled up and the game restarted every now and again, and we were constantly shouting to our 3 year old to get out of the way of the cars (not many stuck to the 5mph limit)
The best thing about this site is the location, the beach was a nice stroll away, and the pub was a short walk up the quiet lane which meant that we didn't need to use the car for the whole weekend. I did read a comment somewhere about the pub not liking kids, but we found it a lovely, friendly pub and our 3 year old was made very welcome. If we were to return, I would like to camp in the lower field, but I get the impression this space is reserved for larger parties, shame.
All in all, OK, but crowded. I would like see a bit more space between tents. It's a 3 out of 5 for me, but it is worth the visit just for the location.
Response from the campsite owner:
Thank you for taking time to review our site, we are naturally sorry you found the site crowded.
You are total correct last weekend was very busy; we had a difficult decision to make. A school had been booked for some months for our second paddock which would not have been excessive. Unfortunately, however, another class contacted us as they had been let down on long established booking at another site. We agreed to have them with us as the children families were very disappointed. On reflection I think we made the wrong decision.
We hope you will visit Heritage Coast Campsite in the future.
We arrived at the beautiful campsite last Saturday (6th June) it was really busy and seemed a bit chaotic but Holly one of the assistants booked us in and showed us the facilities, she told us how to get to the beach and she was just really helpful.
We pitched our Tent and it seemed to get warmer and warmer so that was a fabulous start to the week. On the Sunday we went to the cafe/shop to buy some eggs and some logs for the fire, we got the eggs and then later the logs delivered to our pitch which was another lovely touch to our stay. On the Sunday/Monday Phillipa drove by our pitch to see us as she hadn't really had chance to speak to us beforehand, she said we'd have coffee together during the week.
Anyway, the campsite was amazing, the views were spectacular and it was so peaceful - we were on our own for most of the week as it was obviously term time and the people that did come and pitch up only did so for a night. I love the walk from the campsite to Nash point lighthouse, it was just really peaceful and the scenery was fabulous.
Had coffee with Phillipa yesterday, and she recommended a few places we could go for our last day - what a sweetie!
I've no grumbles about the site though I was a bit scared of having no signal on my phone all week, but to be honest that was a welcomed break.
I'd like to thank Phillipa and the team for making us very welcome, and we will be back to visit you, even though we'll probably be in our caravan on a different site!!
Perfect place to recharge your batteries, no pressure to actually do anything but just relax :)
Would definitely recommend this site to others.
Fantastic find, 5 stars!
Fantastic find - perfect place for a family camping trip! Glynn & phillipa could not have been more helpful & accommodating, facilities were fab, site was clean & picturesque. Walk to the beach was a very pleasant 30 minute bumble with our 4 year old in tow & it felt like we were out in the middle of nowhere except with all the resources you could want including an onsite cafe for warm meals & drinks & a short stroll to the nearby plough & Harrow. It's also worth adding that the info here needs updating as we stayed in our camper Van as did several others so this is an option. The only slight criticism I would give is that breakfast in the cafe was quite chaotic - it seemed like the staff were a bit overwhelmed & under prepared & so service was quite slow, disorganised & several items appeared to be forgotten on several tables. It was quite busy though & a rainy morning but I wonder if breakfast times were a little broader (eg until 11) or possibly served all day then this might have meant less of a rush of people all in at the same time since warm food is served all day anyway?? Such a great Base for exploring the surrounding area too & the team were very friendly & helpful with giving advice on where to go & best ways of getting there. Will definitely be back!
great place to stay, thoroughly enjoyed it
A hidden gem
What a brilliant place! Philippa and Glyn are wonderful hosts, nothing is too much trouble for them and they always have time for a friendly chat. The site is very clean and well maintained with plenty of space so that you don't feel encroached upon. The toilet/shower block is superb and plenty of hot water - not the lukewarm excuse we have experienced elsewhere! The latest addition of a cafe is lovely and a warm welcome is guaranteed. Also inside the cafe ( serving breakfast and cream teas) is an information station where you can find lots of trails to follow, alongside daily newspapers which you are welcome to linger over. I almost didn't write this - If it gets the response it deserves I may not get in myself! We are already planning a return visit over the May bank holiday so save me a spot!!
Great little place
We stayed at the site on probably the worst week of the otherwise beautiful summer, but we had a fabulous time. The owners and staff were so helpful from telephone booking to packing up in a gale, they couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. The facilities were clean and perfectly adequate. They obviously care deeply about the environment and the wildlife which is commendable but also balance that with an understanding of what makes camping pleasurable, we loved the fact that we could have a campfire. The pitches are level and with plenty of room. A lovely walk to the beach & not too strenuous for my friend who had recently finished chemotherapy. I would thoroughly recommend this campsite.
We turned up late on a Saturday after almost giving up finding a campsite in the area . Phillipa and Glyn were both very welcoming and extremely helpful and friendly , our late arrival was no problem to them and Phillipa walked us to our pitch whilst talking me through the running of the well kept site , where everything was etc . For a small extra fee , Glyn even set up a ( much appreciated ) firepit for us while chatting about the local walks and recommending the Plough and Harrow pub for dinner , which was as good as he said . We enjoyed the breakfast which is also an added extra option on site . would highly recommend to anyone looking for a good , clean , well equipped family site . thankyou for your hospitality , we will definitely be back .
We loved the site, it was ideal for families with young children. Friendly staff and great new facilities. A great family-friendly atmosphere, so children from different families play together and have a blast. Wholehaertedly recommended!
Fab, friendly campsite
We just got back from a short weekend break at the Heritage Campsite, run by Philippa and Glynn. We arrived in horrendous weather, with gale force winds and heavy rain. Philippa was there to great us and show us around. Everything was clean and tidy and we were shown to our pitch. We struggled to get the tent up in the gale force winds and ended up having to sleep in the Shogun as our little tent was beaten by the winds and snapped the poles on us. However, next morning the weather improved and Philippa was on hand to tell us about a fab camping shop which was closeby and she assured us that we would be well looked after. She was right and we managed to purchased a great, big, strong tent to get us through the next night.
The two fields on the campsite were very well laid out with lots of space down the middle for children to play about. For those that want a treat at the weekend, Philippa and Glynn make a lovely breakfast and the little touches like fire pitts and logs make this campsite that extra bit special.
This campsite has the personal touch and both Philippa and Glynn go around the site, morning and evening to make sure everyone is ok.
Definitely somewhere we would recommend.
We stayed there for a night and to be honest, I will not rush back. Yes, the site is beautiful, yes, it's well maintained and yes, it's close walk to the beach BUT the welcome was frosty at best. Upon arrival we were subjected to a third degree interrogation about the names and addresses of people we were joining (a 60th birthday camping party for a friend, so definitely not a raging wild rave) and when we couldn't remember an address then we were met by a raised eyebrow, and a sarcastic toned question about how we could possibly be friends with someone we don't know the address of. The 'landlady' seemed to be so annoyed we had arrived at her site, and kept repeating how inconvenient it was for her to have us there. Well, we're all going to do you a massive favour and never come back.
Responce from the campsite owner:
Thank you for your review; we find all feedback useful and do take valued clients comments seriously. We are sorry you felt the reception you received 'frosty' this was not our intention and I hope readers find the friendliness of our site reflected in the many other user reviews on Cool Camping. It is both a site policy and matter of license compliance to record details of all campers. We hope you enjoy the remainder of the summer, the weather forecast looks promising to the end of the month.
This is our third time to visit Heritage Coast Campsite and we'll keep coming back. Glyn and Philippa are amazing and incredibly helpful. We are a family of five and a small dog with a trailer tent, this site is ideal for us. Large pitches, quiet beach, coastal walks, open fires and Glyn's famous Breakfast Baps. The facilities are clean and brand new. The Plough and Harrow Pub is just a hundred yards away and Glyn & Philippa sell ice-cream! We were lucky to have glorious weather what else could you want! We'll be back!
Just got back from a brilliant few nights at this fantastic campsite. Philippa and Glyn were brilliant hosts, very welcoming and friendly. Not forgetting Ted the dog. Will definitely be coming back to this site as it is a little gem.

My husband, daughter (7) and I have today returned from 8 nights at Hertitage Coast Campsite. What a wonderful week we have had. Our hosts Philippa ang Glyn were hospitable, friendly and caring. The site is perfect if you are looking for a site that offers fabulous views, large pitches and a friendly atmosphere. We had a campfire every night which for us made the whole experience much more enjoyable. The facilities are excellent and clean. The setting is beautiful, and the weekend breakfasts are amazing. Thank you philippa and glyn for making our holiday so enjoyable and we look forward to visiting you again in the future.
One to return to!
We stayed at this delightful site for 4 nights with 4 other families whom we know. This helped to get us settled but very soon, much of the site was joining in huge rounders games and a great time was had by all. The washing/toilet facilities are excellent and are clean and well looked after. It was a bonus to find Fire Pits available for hire with bags of split logs available so that we could while away the evenings, sitting around a camp fire! Just like camping used to be.
The owners are very friendly and we were very pleasantly surprised to find them up early on Saturday and Sunday mornings cooking full English breakfast rolls for all on site who wanted them! (at a small extra cost) Especially nice on our final morning when we had packed much of our equipment away!
The nearby beach is very beautiful, although the path down is long and rocky. We had all ages from 3 to 60 plus and everyone coped well. The brook in the paddock has some large trees which give cooling shade on the hottest of days. The walk to the lighthouse was managed by our 5 year old without problems. We were careful to keep the dogs well secured on their leads as the cliffs are very sheer - although the views are breath-taking.
There will always be one or two who will find fault with the best of sites, but credit where it is due, we all felt welcome at this site and WILL return soon.
The best trip ever!
We just got back from spending 3 glorious days in this part of Wales. I went with my three sons and mother in law's dog… all booked and packed very last minute due to cancelling an alternative holiday for unfortunate unforseen reasons
The campsite, setting, owners, beach (20 min walk through rolling hills and an enchanting wood!), local pub, weather (!) all perfect.
Philippa and her husband did everything they could to make us welcome, I overheard her on the phone turning away single sex 'party' bookings as this was meant to be an idyllic family campsite which it certainly is. We will definitely be back… could not fault a single thing (except maybe the length of our stay which was only 3 nights!)
All the very best. We WILL be back
love from Marc, Henry, George, Alfie and Jack (the dog) xxxx
My two friends and I camped here last weekend and loved it! The site is in a perfect location, close to a gorgeous beach and coastal footpaths, a walk away from a pub and a fairly short drive to nearby towns to stock up on food (and camping gas!). Owners are lovely and very helpful. Most of the other campers were families, who were all very friendly towards us, especially when we had a glitch with our camping stove! Definitely recommend this camp site and the gorgeous beaches and coastal walk. Wish we could have stayed longer!
Love it - definitely going again
Really, really loved our 2-night stay here - already working our dates for when we'll go back, hopefully with some friends.
The site was full but I didn't ever have to queue for the loo or the shower, both of which are very new and very clean with plenty of loo roll and hand wash supplied (you need 50p pieces for the shower). The hosts Phillippa and Glyn are fab - so friendly and helpful. My other half was delighted with his breakfast roll cooked by Glyn on Sun morning (£4.00) and my 5-yr old was a big fan of the hot chocolate from the top-quality vending machine (£1.50).
Pitches were plenty big enough and the ground was really even - didn't feel crammed in like on some sites even with our sizeable awning. A great place for people to sit around and chill quietly - mostly families and couples so nice atmosphere. One group playing their music a bit too loud was swiftly but very politely asked by Phillippa to turn it down, which was reassuring.
The bottom field had loads of space for kids to play and run around and burn off lots of energy. It was lovely and peaceful sitting there watching the sunset.
We paid £18.50 a night for the three of us which I think is really reasonable and I can't think of anything to say which isn't positive. Am normally more of a glamper than a camper but even with no electric hook-up, I'd go back to this site again and again and again...
Where do I start?
My partner and I stayed here for three nights, reluctantly returning home today.
Great value, Extremely well kept field, great welcome, cannot fault the facilities for a pitch only campsite. We had ample space - we booked late, however Philippa still managed to fit us in and as we travelled without a vehicle we had enough room for us and us again.
Breakfast at the weekend was great, sat on the communal picnic benches and had a nice chat about the surrounding area with Glyn. Both Philippa and Glyn were perfect hosts.
Such a lovely campsite feel - as a seasoned festival camper I still always worry that there will be a few hostile campers however everyone was so friendly, donating food to each other on leaving days and we had a few local ciders with our next door neighbours around a campfire which was great fun.
I do not want to speak of the views on the beach, the forest, the fields and brooks, I want to keep them all to myself! My partner and I were stunned, the beach when the tide is out is absolutely beautiful, the cliff formation is incredible and we had fun swimming everyday and searching for fossils (which we found in abundance).
It was great to get away and relax, I haven't been this relaxed in a long time.
Philippa and Glyn, we thank you, we will return with cheese in hand!!
Do I tell others or do I keep this golden nugget of a site all to my self !
Stayed at this site for 3 nights
What we liked :- good sized pitches, pitches in super condition and stone free, on site facilities first rate an d owners who go out of their way to be friendly and helpful
What we didn't like :- Having to leave
This site is like going back 30 years to how I remember camping, families having a weekend away together, a few beers round a fire and children playing, every one saying good morning to each other and mixing together in the evening.
The site is perfectly situated for exploring this lovely area whilst being secluded and totally peaceful, the lane it is on is rarely used by cars so the walk to and from the pub is safe. The beach when the tide is out is stunning and the walk down to it is through a gorgeous wooded valley with a stream and waterfalls bubbling beside you.
Just back from a weekend at the Heritage Coast Campsite in Monknash. It is a little out of the way and can be tricky to find but little gems of campsites are like this. The view is stunning though and well worth the effort getting there. The top field was full but we reserved our pitches a few weeks ago.
We arrived quite late on Friday evening having been delayed by rush hour traffic on our journey but it doesn't matter. Glyn and Philippa are on the site until quite late to welcome you. And a really great welcome it was too. It was a change to see the campsite owners taking so much care to make sure everybody had what they wanted. We have stayed on campsites where the owners come around to collect your money and dissapear, never to be seen again. We had two pitches for four tents, 3 adults and 9 children. The pitches are reasonably well spaced in the slightly sloping top field where we were. There are pitches either side, one side against the road and the other side (approx 30 meters parallel) against the hedge to the next feild that had sheep in. Not sure how much we paid altogether but it was more than reasonable. We also hired the low fire pit (theoretically as heat rises it should keep your legs warm) and bought a sack of large logs from Glyn along with some of our own firewood which lasted for our two nights. The next field also has pitches.
The utility block is great. Two shower cubicles (50p), two basins and two toilets in ladies and gents and a disabled shower toilet, all kept spotlessly clean. Also a side room with a chest freezer and mobile charging points (although it is difficult to get any signal) and two sinks for washing up. Also, a machine that gives the best ground coffee I have ever tasted from a vending machine for £1.50.
After setting up we enjoyed our BBQ on Friday night which we cooked on a grill over the fire pit, and was surprised to see Glyn and Philippa come around as late as 21.30 whilst walking their dog, making sure everybody was settled in and saying good night to us all. There is a very communal feel to the campsite with everybody chatting to each other. Most of the campers seemed to be families with children, some older couples but not many singles. A very quiet family friendly site with plenty of room for children to run around and play games. There is a pub in Monknash where we planned to eat on Saturday night but when we tried to book a few days before arriving they would not take bookings for children in their restaraunt? Not what you expect from a country pub.
We got up Saturday morning and made use of the clean facilities (there was no que, I did not have to wait and the shower was brilliant) and were surprised to see Philippa and Glen outside from 07.30 cooking sausages, bacon, eggs and hash browns which you could buy in a roll. It went great with a cup of the fresh ground coffee.
We spent the rest of the day walking down to the pebble beach (walking shoes/boots are a good idea as the path is steep and stoney in places. Later we climbed to the top of the cliffs and walked across rough path through the fields to the Nash Point Lighthouse where there is a small cafe. We then walked to the Horseshoe Pub in Marcross where we had a fantastic lunch (Recommended) much better than the unwelcoming pub in Monknash. Later we walked back to the campsite (busses do run every hour through the day Mon-Sat between Bridgend and Cardiff via Monknash and Marcross), we used the rest of the BBQ food for supper and slept like logs.
We only stayed two night's but would have been more than happy to stay two weeks, exploring the surrounding area and coast which is mostly cliffs and pebble coves.
Many thanks to Phillipa and Glyn for looking after us so well. Thank You. We will return as soon as we can and would recommend this campsite to anybody.
We have just spent a fantastic few days at this lovely site. How nice to be sharing the site with people who camp in the old fashioned way ie.sitting around fire pits till late and chatting the night away.Just great!
Nothing was too much trouble for Glynn and Phillippa who obviously work very hard to please everyone. How anyone could find anything to complain about at this site is beyond me .The facilties are fine, the view is lovely and Phillippa is your friend the minute that you arrive.
We had a lovely time and would definitely recommend it .
Pat and Christopher Burbidge.
Just back from a fabulous weekend
Thank goodness we have discovered this campsite, we have just returned from a fantastic weekend camping, so good we have booked to go again in August. The site is flat and easy to pitch even very big tents ( as is ours with 2 adults, 2 kids 3 and 7 and a laborador) the bottom field has a lovely brook running along the bottom and a mown path to make walking around it in the evening while bat spotting very easy. The owners were extremely helpful, and while the facilities are modest they were clean and well maintained.
This is a great campsite for those families wanting to get back to basics with their kids, walking, rock pooling and visiting the attractions of this part of Wales.
We stayed here for 2 nights in July with 3 children (2,3 and 9). The camp site was fully booked and it felt a bit crowded as the top field is rather narrow and the pitches are close together . We found the camp site far too expensive as we had to pay extra for all three children . We paid 30£ a night including a fire pit. Plus you have to pay 50 p for shower ((lasts around 5 min) . There is a freezer but no fridge in the utility room .
Unfortunately we dared to complain about the fire pit we received as we got the smaller one ( there are two sizes ) and it looked more like a barbecue to us . As we already had paid for it in advance over the phone We felt it would have been nice to keep a proper fire pit for us instead of giving us the small one as this was all was what left . I was disappointed that this caused an argument with the owners . Not very professional at all. In the end the lady gave us a refund for the fire pit for one of the 2 nights .
We also asked if we could use the electricity plug up at the toilet blog to pump up our two air beds ( the pump to use in our car didn't work ) .We were allowed to after being lectured by both owners that it was just a low volt connection and when we did mattress number 2 we were told that this had to be the last one as the electricity was not meant to be used for this. I really did not feel very welcome at all .
The toilet and shower blog is alright with 2 toilets and 2 showers each but you might be in for a wait and the shower room is tight if you go in with 2 kids . There is a disabled / family room there but it was locked at the time.
There is a second field adjoining the main field which was fully allocated by a group of families ( around 20 tents) . I would have preferred to pitch down there as the field feels more roomy and gives the kids more space to run around without bumping into the neighbours tent . There is a little stream on the end of this field and a stone table and wooden bench . It looked lovely .
On the plus side - the view over the fields towards the sea is nice and the kids enjoyed playing and running up and down the site .
Anyway - this camp site is not for us - we are not coming back!
Response from campsite owner:
Thanks you for your comments. We would just like to clarify a few points:
Charges are based on tent size and number of people occupying a pitch. As this customer paid in advance, this was explained to him by phone and he had the option not to book. The £30 cost included a large tent, five people, a vehicle and 2 nights hire of a fire pit (£2 per night), much in line with many sites listed on Cool Camping.
We provide 5 showers, 5 toilets, one urinal and 5 hand basins. The key for the accessible/family facility is issued upon request as unaccompanied children pull the disabled alarm. Most people appreciate the need for this precaution. A long, dangling red cord is a great temptation to children ;-)
Showers are charged at 50p for 5 minutes. A complimentary freezer and mobile phone charger is provided. This is a tent only site and therefore we do not provide facilities more usually found on a caravan site (i.e. fridges etc). The showers are of good size and include a changing area (perhaps 3 people at once may find it crowded!).
Our fire pits come in two heights, not sizes. Some campers prefer a higher pit, others prefer lower. They are issued on a first-come-first-serve basis unless a special request is made. This camper insisted the pit was a BBQ and we did our best to explain; the pits have no cooking facility, and were purchased as fire pits. Numerous positive reviews refer to the fire pits as being a great addition to this site. We understood the client was returning the pit and refunded him for the one night use. As it happened, the client kept the pit and used it for the duration of the visit.
Regarding the airbed, the complimentary plugs for charging mobiles, tablets and cameras have a low voltage fuse which will blow with some air bed pumps and are not provided for this purpose.
We are glad that you liked the look of Brook paddock – it really is lovely and hence, very popular. It boasts a BBQ/picnic area and large playing field and is available to all campers (as explained upon arrival and on our web site). The group referred to in the review were a school outing away from the main camping group. An additional toilet was provided in this paddock for the group.
We are sorry this camper was disappointed but pleased their children enjoyed running around the area in which they were camped.
My partner and I stayed there 2 nights for the first May bank holiday. We appreciated the fact that unlike many other camp sites, here we did not have to book a minimum of 3 nights. The owners are very nice and they make sure to be available most of the time. They meet every one that stays at their camp site and give them a very nice welcome. It made us feel less like numbers and more like people. We definitely recommend it and really hope we can go there again. Thanks again for the pleasant stay!
