Either bring your own tent to camp, in the woods or pick a tent in the open wildflower meadow, all within walking distance of Millford Haven's natural harbour

There’s no castle on Castle Pill Farm, an agricultural smallholding one mile from Millford Haven and the Daugleddau estuary, but you can find natural fortifications in the shape of hulking, bushy hedgerows and great, turret like trees. A tiny stream is the closest thing you might find to a moat, bubbling its waters east to a tidal inlet, while battalions of sheep patrol the local fields. In all, it’s a pastoral scene reflecting the farm’s variety – through the years they have grown potatoes, established a pick-your-own fruit business and opened a small farm shop – and today there’s an even newer venture: a gorgeous glampsite.

Split between an open meadow of long, lush grass and a wooded glade with small clearings, Eco-Escapes Glamping offers seven fully furnished bell tents, each sleeping up to four people. Inside they feature beds and soft furnishings, while outside each tent is accompanied by a private barbecue shelter and picnic table. Though the campsite is off-grid, comforts aren’t lacking. Solar lighting, gas-powered showers and even a wood-fired hot tub hidden among the trees keep glampers nicely pampered, while ‘extreme’ badminton offers some extra fun – the court has been mown on a jaunty angle, meaning players on either side have to factor in the slope.

The entire glamping site, in fact, is on a gentle angle, which reaches down towards the tidal inlet. It's just a hundred metres from your tent to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which you can follow to the waters edge. As you go, the footpath tumbles through a large wood, home to a pair of community-built roundhouses with a campfire area adjacent to the stream. It’s a perfect patch for paddling and dam building – children love it. From the water’s edge, keen walkers can either follow the meandering coast (at low tide) along the old railway line path all the way to Milford Marina or you can stick to the coastal path to the quaint village of Hazelbeach taking in views of the impressive energy infrastructure of Milford Haven along the way.

By car, meanwhile, the whole Pembrokeshire coast becomes your oyster. It’s 20 minutes to St Brides Bay, the water sports-friendly village of Dale and the picturesque harbour town of Tenby or bring bikes and tour the Brunel cycle trail, a long and lovely flat cycle trail which starts at Neyland Marina and extends to Haverfordwest, through the village of Johnston.

Facilities

The meadow has 4 flushing toilets, and 4 hot gas showers whilst the woodland glade has 2 hot gas showers and 2 flushing toilets. Each area has a covered washing-up area with clean drinking water and a couple of kitchen sinks and a food preparation worktop too. The woodland wash-up area also features a communal shelter, available for all to use, to cook and eat under, if the weather turns bad. Our reception hut has tons of recommendations of things to do and places to eat in the area, as well as being home to our solar-powered phone charger station and freezer for re-freezing your ice blocks.

Each camping pitch has a firepit/BBQ and a picnic bench, and our deluxe ones also have a gazebo shelter over the eating area too. The meadow has a selection of family-friendly games and a swing, plus ample space for ball games. There is a wood-fired hot tub in the woodland area (available for use by all – not available for 2021 due to covid, sorry). Celtic games events in summer, with welly-wanging and rounders to name a few. Visits to the farm’s family of pigs are also available, depending upon their location on the farm.

Nearby

It's a few hundred metres from your tent to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which you can follow to the Castle Pill Inlet of the Daugleddau estuary. From the water’s edge, you can continue to Milford Marina, home to a number of shops, cafés, a maritime museum (01646 694496), boat trips, a waterfront gallery and several popular waterfront bars and restaurants, or you can head along the coast path to the village of Hazelbeach and it's dog-friendly pub The Ferry Inn (01646 600270). It's a 10-minute drive to the unspoilt and dog-friendly beach of Sandy Haven, while the big sandy beach of Broad Haven is only a 15 minute drive away with a beach-side shop, pub, café and opportunities to hire wetsuits, kayaks, paddles and surf boards. For a spot of history, it's 15 minutes to Henry VII’s Pembroke Castle (01646 681510) and 30 minutes to the stunning cathedral (01437 720202) that classifies tiny St Davids as a city (the smallest city in the UK). For food and drink enthusiasts Caws Cenarth cheese factory (01239 710432) and tasting room is not to be missed, and neither is the tour of the Cwm Deri Vineyard (01834 891274).

Food & Drink

Depending on the season, the site may potentially have fresh farm produce (pork, bacon, eggs, home grown veg and salad stuffs) available to buy. For a meal out, try The Harbour Master (01646 695493) and Martha’s Vineyard (01646 697083) at Milford Marina, serving fresh seafood dishes. There are also a number of lovely little cafés and shops along the marina front. The Jolly Sailor (01646 600378) at Burton is also excellent. They serve reasonably priced and hearty pub grub with fantastic views of the river. It also has seats outside, so you can take your dog with you. Finally, try a visit to Neyland Marina where The Bar (01646 602550) is particularly good.

Getting There

Please don't follow google maps directions to us, as it takes you down a bridleway rather than a road. Instead follow directions for Eco Escape Campsite - sa73 1dn and keep a lookout a couple of miles along the Waterston road (the B4325 between Waterston and Blackbridge) for a farm gate immediately adjacent to the blue gates of James Findlay Electrical Services Garage (please note there are a set of blue gates in Waterston village itself, but we are more than a mile further on than this). Go through the farm gate (with the wooden sign of a wind turbine and tree) to the right of this garage, drive down the lane and go through the second gate on left (signposted Eco-escape). Follow the signs for dry and wet weather parking and walk through gate with the 'no vehicles' sign, next to our reception hut. The camping meadow is to your left, the woodland camping area is through another two gates to your right. There are wheelbarrows provided in the field you are welcome to use for your things (we don't allow cars anywhere else on site, other than the campervan pitches). You can arrive as late as you like, but please be mindful of disturbing our other guests. Make yourselves at home and we will catch you to say hello later at some point!

The nearest train station is Milford Haven (0845 748 4950) a 5-minute drive away. The nearest bus stop is approximately 1 mile away (walkable up a country lane), in Steynton. Taxis are relatively cheap - 01646 698818 (Jock's Taxis).

Fun, Friendly, Wholesome

Loved my time at this site, the land was in such an ideal location. The family who own the site were very welcoming and were out to help us whenever we needed it. Would definitely recommend this site to anyone wanting to go to wales.

Relaxing, peaceful, family fun

We stayed for 4 nights in August. The bell tent was great, everything we needed to cook, sleep and chill. Lovely views and the hot tub was an added bonus. Special thanks to our hosts for helping us out when our car broke down, even accommodating us for any extra night at short notice.

Gorgeous campsite, great hosts and an amazing setting

Absolutely wonderful campsite with the owners going above and beyond with great thoughtful touches that make your stay really enjoyable. The pitches are well spaced apart, meaning you don’t feel cramped in with a million other tents.

Chilled out and dog-friendly

We stayed for two nights, with our very energetic cocker spaniel. The pitches were a good size, separated, with each having its own fire-pit and picnic bench which was very thoughtful. Having such a small number of pitches (I think only 5 in our field) meant that it was very peaceful, personal and private. The owners have a big dog called Teddy that follows them around on their errands, so they are very happy to have dogs on the campsite. A lot of the pembrokeshire sights are within a 30 min drive and there are large supermarkets nearby. Will be staying again.

Beautiful situation in large open field with well spaced pitches. Friendly and helpful hosts and good facilities.

Many wonderful walks, stunning coves and bays to enjoy nearby along with easy access to Milford Haven to buy food, supplies etc. A delightful, laidback haven in the heart of South Pembrokeshire.

The entire site

We camped for a week and it was perfect in every way! Well looked after facilities and a very warm and friendly welcome. The hot tub is well worth the time to get it hot, such a memorable and amazing experience. Something worth mentioning is that the owners have clearly not put profit ahead of the experience and this is clear to see by the amount of space left just to be as it is instead of squeezing as many pitches in as possible! 10/10 and definetly returning!
