A tiny seaside campsite overlooking Dale bay and running alongside the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path

It was a while ago that Cool Camping first discovered ‘the Pembrokeshire paradox’ and, if we were the scholarly type, no doubt we would have written a few academic papers on it by now. Pembrokeshire, you see, is a county of unbeatable beauty, home to one of the UK’s most enchanting stretches of coastline, broken into rocky outcrops, islands and broad, sandy beaches. Yet while it offers charmingly peaceful countryside away from the rush of modern life, its tiny towns and villages positively burst in the summer months – it’s an escape that’s so attractive there are now just too many escapees.

What a joy it is, then, to discover Point Farm Campsite. Out on the Dale peninsular, the county’s remote tip, where the cliffs wind in every conceivable angle matched only by the coastal path, Point Farm is a truly tiny hideaway that offers camping of old in an environment away from the tourist hype. There are just six camping pitches in total – something somewhat inconceivable as your journey towards to the coast, haunted by holiday parks further inland – and a ‘no caravan’ policy that gives the whole place a nostalgic, traditional vibe. It’s a teeny tiny paradise that epitomises what Cool Camping is about – right down to each pitch being provided with its own firepit.

The campsite is actually a relatively new venture – a family spot run by Nia, Fil and their two children – though the farm itself dates back to the 1720s. It sits proudly up on top of a gentle slope like an ancient local landmark and boasts panoramic views not just out across the sea, but also back in land to the Preseli Mountains and up the Milford Haven estuary.

There are two types of pitch: Three all-weather pitches have a gravelly base suitable for campervans, with electrical hook-ups and space for cars to be parked alongside, while, slightly lower, a terraced grassy space is left for tent campers only, their cars parked in an adjacent parking area. There’s also a newly added Shepherd’s Hut, with a kitchen, beds and all you need inside, suitable for a family of four. A second Shepherd's Hut is on its way for 2021. All areas are just a few footsteps from the wooden shower block, with a family shower room and a washing up area, while in the opposite direction you can tumble down through the trees directly onto the Pembrokeshire Coast Path that runs right next to the site. As a walker’s stop off point it’s ideal.

Even if you don’t have the legs for the full 186-mile coastal route, though, you needn’t worry. Provided you can follow the first 400 meters from the campsite you’ll already find yourself at the first pub break! It’s here that Dale village is found; a quaint village fronted by a beautiful sandy beach. It’s a convenient, thriving hub from which to plan your stay – whether it’s renting a surfboard from one of the waterfront shops or planning a kayaking trip up the Milford Haven estuary. You can also hop on a boat for a ferry journey out to Skokholm and Grassholm islands, the former a rugged, remote island noted for its impressive cliffs of red sandstone, the latter home to some 80,000 screaming gannets. The boats can’t land (for that head a few miles across the mainland for a ferry to Skomer Island instead), but they do stop so you can watch the wildlife.

The shower block has a family shower room with toilet, a single shower and baby changer table; a separate shower; and a separate toilet. There is a laundry service and each pitch comes with its own fire pits - wood and charcoal available to buy. A handy shed houses re-charging points, fridges and freezer, microwave, kettle, hairdryer and beach toys and books you can borrow. Free WiFi.

Luxury Shepherd's Huts include kitchen, beds, bedding and more. Tawny has its own shower shed adjacent and Puffin has an ensuite shower room.

Suitable For

Glampers, campers. tents, trailer tents, campervans, small motorhomes (max 6m), couples, families, groups, dogs – yes. Caravans – no. PLEASE CHECK THE DIMENSIONS OF THE PITCH TO MAKE SURE YOU WILL FIT ON - It is your responsibility to make sure that your van/tent will fit.

The location makes off-site activities a bit of a no brainer! The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path runs directly alongside the campsite, with a number of circular walks taking in the local beaches – Dale, Watwick, Marloes – and the site is a mere 450 meters walking distance from picturesque Dale village. On the waterfront, West Wales Watersports (01646 636642) offer tuition and hire of sailing dinghies, windsurfs and stand-up paddle boards. Or, take a short drive to Martins Haven where you can take the ferry out to Skomer Island (01646 603123) and marine nature reserve (15 minutes). Dale Fort Field Studies Centre (01646 636205) run short wildlife courses for all the family (1 mile) and there are local charter boat fishing trips for any budding anglers.

Food & Drink

You don't need to look far. The Griffin (01646 636227) is 400 meters away – an award winning pub offering fresh seafood and an excellently cosy, family-friendly atmosphere. In the summer, there's a terrace outside too. You can also head down to the Dale Yacht Club's restaurant, Coco's Brasserie (01646 636362), which is open to non-members for lunch and dinner (check their seasonal opening times depending on when you're there). The Boathouse Café (01646 636929) in Dale offers simple food at breakfast and lunch times (again, seasonal opening hours) and also has a small shop selling basic supplies.  Slightly further away at Marloes Sands is the wonderful Runwayskiln (01646 636545) - National Trust leased cafe (less seasonal hours but good to check opening times)

end of April – end of September.

Family Friendly

Like nippers on Christmas Day, you need to be prepared for a very early start to enjoy the gift that is Point Farm Campsite. Book early enough, though, and you can bag a pitch at this teeny, tiny campsite and beat the Pembrokeshire crowds.

Lovely stay in Puffin

We stayed in Puffin Shepherd's Hut for 2 nights. I can't really say enough good things about it. The hut itself was comfortable, clean, roomy (2 people). As it was hot weather, having the kitchen partially open was great, and sitting outside cooking on the firepit was fun. The campsite was very calm and peaceful. Everything we needed, and more, was available. Bring food with you as the nearest shop is about 20 mins drive. The location is excellent; one direction takes you onto the coast path and a tiny beach (15 mins). The other way into the centre, about 5 mins walk, for paddle boarding, pubs, cafe etc. West Dale beach was about a 20 minute walk, although you can get there the long way via the coast path. We're hoping to go back to Point Farm campsite one day.

Top marks for this site

Point Farm is a special campsite with a small number of pitches giving a unique feel. Facilities are excellent, and lots of additional touches such as brushes for use, a kettle, food waste containers & even a fridge shelf for each pitch. Hosts Nia & Fil provide laid back professionalism, so helpful & available without being in your face. Location is amazing just yards from the village with a great pub (food & beer excellent, esp the Guiness (best in Wales?) & cafe overlooking the sea plus coastal walks from the site. Highly recommended, thanks for a great stay 😊

Great campsite

Great facilities with fridges, kettle and charging points, well-spaced flat pitches. A few hundred metres up the hill from the harbour

Friendly, quiet coastal camping

We’ve just stayed for 4 nights , and I was lovely , it’s a 10 minute walk to dale where we SUP and 15 minute walk to a small secret beach . The campsite was quiet and lovely with beautiful views , and the owners were friendly . Would definitely Recommend. Also the showers and toilets were always kept clean and we had our own shelf in the fridge which was very handy as we have 2 small children.

Wonderful location, well equipped, friendly.

Having a fridge, freezer and microwave available made camping super easy. Beautiful setting with amazing walks. My kids loved the site - safe and friendly. Beach was brilliant too!

Awesome quiet spot in a beautiful setting

Really great site, full of singing birds and the sound of the sea. Great facilities and very friendly owners. Brilliant location if you're doing activities in Dale too. Will be back!

Lovely quiet campsite

We pitched our tent on 'Kittiwake' for 7 nights. This is a lovely very well run campsite - and sheltered (we had gale damage at another exposed site last year!). Beautiful area, particularly for walking the coastal path, and the site is great for walking in and out of Dale village (10 mins) and the excellent Griffin pub. Enjoyed the firepit too. Very helpful welcoming owners - Fil and Nia - nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended.

Great little eco campsite in a perfect location

We stayed in a tent on the teal pitch for 2 nights and had a great stay. We think that's the best pitch as it's highest so you can see more, and also it's closest but not too close to the toilets and utility area. We loved the fire pit option and also how there was a big focus on eco friendly items. Would recommend!

What a lovely campsite. It really is by the sea, we could see it through the trees from our pitch. The campsite is immaculately kept. The location is perfect as it’s on the coastal path and a short walk into tiny village of Dale. We can’t wait to come back and explore more of this lovely area.

Best campsite I have stayed at.

Spent 5 days at this site and cannot think of any faults. The facilities are way beyond any other campsite offers; free hot showers, a Fridge and Freezer, charging points, a kettle, BBQ pits and even hair dryers! The freindly owners Nia and Phil cannot do enough to help and inform and Phil even offered to lend tent pegs if mine were not substantial enough.5 stars +.

Small campsite in quiet location

This is a small campsite with just 8 pitches and was for us generally quiet and peaceful. Despite the website saying the campsite overlooks Dale Bay there are no bay views from the campsite. I think the views are from the owners own house higher up the hill. There is a great little hut with fridge, freezer, electric socket for charging phones etc and a kettle - fantastic when you are desperate for a cuppa and just can’t wait for the camping stove. If you want to kick a ball around or play rounders / cricket you will be disappointed as the site is on quite a slope (apart from the actual pitches). The website pictures don’t quite show this. The showers are great and lovely and plenty of hot water but the washing up sinks needed plunging to drain properly but the owners had kindly provided a plunger. Also bring a stand alone washing line as there wasn’t really anywhere to hang wetsuits etc.

Very nice place!!

We stayed in the shepperd's hut and had an amazing time! The beds were very, very comfortable and we really liked our campfires in the special bbq! The kitchen is very well equipped! The only thought we had that de big open "door" in the kitchen may cause some trouble during heavy rain... But we were very lucky with the weather and didn't had any problem!

Great picturesque base for fantastic walks!

Fab little site with superb facilities ie shower, washing up and some very stunning walks. Stock up before you arrive with supplies as no shops but that’s part of the attraction of this site. Great local pub The Griffin however I was surprised to find dogs not allowed inside - I would definitely come again and highly recommend this site!

Very good, but not perfect.

This is a beautiful, small campsite in a secluded situation but close to the (limited) facilities of Dale. I couldn’t fault the owners or the cleanliness of the facilities. My one reservation is that the washing up and bathroom facilities are too limited for the capacity of the site. On our final, Friday, night there were 4 largish tents and 2 camper vans and the 2 toilets and showers were at capacity!! During the previous nights when there were only 2 tents and one campervan, things were absolutely fine.

A great site, facilities are excellent, a lot better than many hotels I have stayed in. The hosts are lovely and very friendly and helpful whilst being respectful of your space. Second time we’ve stayed here and we will be back again

Spotless facilities and idyllic location

A stunning little site with everything you need for a perfect, relaxing weekend away. Everything was as described and the toilets and showers were spotlessly clean. The site is really well maintained and the owners clearly manage it to offer the best possible experience for visitors. Great location, well worth the drive to get here, with stunning coastal walks and wildlife watching. Thanks for a perfect weekend. We will definitely be back.

Ideal short stay

Point Farm is a nice small campsite with fantastic showers and toilets. There is washing up facilities as well as a kettle, microwave, fridge and freezer. The location is picturesque and a short walk into Dale. We took the owner's advice and stocked up on food from the butchers and supermarket in Haverfordwest. We made another stop off for jam and cheese at Marloes village store. Dale has nice places to eat out but no shops to top up on campsite consumables. We did buy dressed crab and a cooked lobster from Mark the local fisherman. Ask anyone how to find him. Only negative was the campsite removing the £5 box of logs we asked to buy to burn. Came back late on our last night expecting to sit out and have a fire but they'd gone....4 day Easter weekend was more than enough time to explore the area which included a trip to Skomer Island

Our favourite campsite

I’ve stayed here 3 times now with my daughter and we just love it. Nia and Fil are so friendly and helpful, the facilities are fantastic and always super clean, and the location is just amazing. If I could pitch my tent here permanently and live in it I would!

Fantastic tiny campsite

We stayed at this little gem for two nights on our tour of Pembroke , the owners where helpful and friendly , facilities where very good and clean a perfect stay for us, the location was so quiet and seconds from the costal path , I found a deserted pristine beach just around the costal path, just myself and the Whippet, I would love to stay there again.

Ticks all the boxes! Location, facilities, friendly welcome

What a fantastic stay at Point Farm! The campsite was wonderful; small and friendly with fantastic facilities (clean loos, warm showers, fridge, phone charge points, local maps, toys). Nia and Fil were incredibly helpful and friendly. We chose to hire the BBQ/firepit for the week which was very useful and great for sitting around and enjoying the summer evenings. Location was perfect just 500 meters from Dale beach (where you can hire dingys, canoes, windsurfers, paddleboards or even take a fishing trip). It's also where the wonderful Griffin Inn is located. Thoroughly enjoyed drinking G&T's whilst crabbing with the kids. Also highly recommend Mark the local fisherman - we had an amazing BBQ with fresh lobster, crab, plaice and cod all caught by Mark

Shepherd's hut was a delight

We had four nights in Tawny, the Shepherd's hut with attached kitchen. Beautiful accommodation in a beautiful setting and so well appointed that nothing was an effort. I could have moved in for good!

On point!

Great little campsite - very sheltered, which was a treat after a windy week! Owners are lovely, and super helpful. Lovely flat pitches, and the shower facilities are great - very hot powerful showers. Very close to Dale, and we also second all the Griffin Inn suggestions. Fab place!

What a lovely site but ssshhhh don't tell anyone!!!

A beautiful site with great outlooks in a perfect location. The owners are very friendly, welcoming and helpful. The amenities were lovely and clean. The site is small but spacious so you don't feel hemmed in or overlooked by anyone. Will definitely go there again.

Wonderful little site, incredible walking

Lovely tiny site, great bathrooms and lovely location on the cliff top. The owners are a delight, really helpful. Dale is a 5 minute walk down a small road and about as perfect a little harbour village as you can get. Small and lovely, it has a pub (really good but very bsy so booking is necessary) and a cafe (not great food, generic caff fare) which also houses a small shop for essentials and seaside gifts. Particularly good for crabbing bits and body borads. The watersports place here is great, we rented kayaks and paddled around the bay. Close by are some amazing beaches, particularly Marloes Sands. Just gorgeous. We originally booked our stay here for just us as a couple but ended up taking our 12 year old. She was kept happy with crabbing, kayaking, beach walks and good pub grub but we would probably have heard about it if we'd have stayed longer than 2-3 nights as the site is (thankfully) not particularly aimed at kids. There are no play facilities, which personally, I'm happy with! We had to drive to Milford Haven for camping gas so it's worth noting that this site is pretty remote, which for my money is it's charm and unique selling point. Will definitely go back as a couple for a more relaxing, walking break. Only one word of warning, the terraced pitches are reinforced with stone/ broken up tarmac, which is great for vans but harsh when putting up and taking down your tent. And hard on the knees when in your tent. Make sure you have pegs that are good for rock (more of which Fil, the owner, kindly lent us), a very strong mallet and peg remover.

'Pitcher' perfect!

Point Farm have got it right, and it's only their second season. It's clear Nia and Fil have done their research, but, more than that, they've listened to their guests! The result is a small, but perfectly formed, getaway. The site is situated a stone's throw from the sea and directly on the coastal path, so it's perfect for occasional ramblers and serious walkers alike. You can walk into diminutive Dale in five minutes and stop for a beer or a seafood special at the excellent Griifin Inn (sadly not dog friendly, but outside tables available for those with canine companions). Our fellow campers were walkers, fishing enthusiasts, walkers and families - which tells you everything you need to know about what the surrounding area caters for. They are careful with pitches and there is a great feeling of space. The shower/Loo block is excellent and immaculately clean. Currently it's only cold water for pot washing, but plans are afoot to change that. We slept incredibly well, possibly due to the waves lulling us to sleep! I applaud Nia and Fil for creating such a heavenly little retreat and would recommend to anyone wanting a peaceful getaway.

Lovely quiet spot

We went as the season opened in April and had a lovely three night stay. We had a specific pitch, which was good as it was in the corner and near the wash room area. The bathrooms have been newly finished and are big and spotlessly clean. The shower was the best campsite shower I've ever experienced! Seriously good water pressure and lots of hot water. No push buttons and dribbling taps here. The campsite is small, but perfectly formed. Just what we look for. It's positioned just outside Dale and is a very short walk away from the Griffin Inn, which does lovely food. We had a fantastic fish and fresh lobster supper there the first night and it was so good, we went back again the following day. I would thoroughly recommend Point Farm campsite. It was just what we were looking for - secluded, small, tucked away in a quiet corner of a lovely spot but near to the pub and great WiFi. (I usually like to totally disconnect, but it was really useful for planning day trips out and we even watched a film one evening when the rain set in). We will definitely be returning. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Perfect Stay

Dale is one of my favourite places and really enjoyed my visit this time staying at Point Farm.  The website lets you view and book a specific pitch which I’ve not seen before and I really like.  I actually ended up booking on the ‘phone as it happened and Nia was really helpful, and informative.  I was staying in a small VW camper which was a perfect fit for this lovely site.  The hard standing was spot on and because of the small number of pitches felt really special.

It’s a really short walk down to the village and – for me, the jetty to head off out to sea for the day.  The facilities are sparkling and the shower is like being at home and there was oodles of hot water.  I really liked all the re-cycling provision and the old Belfast sinks to do the washing up. The wi-fi worked really well and the  mobile signal at Dale is now great (I know it's good to escape but sometimes it's a necessary evil....).

Both Nia and Fil really couldn’t do enough to welcome and help and generally make my stay for 2 nights a great experience.  I’d highly recommend the site and I can’t wait to return myself.

Beautiful Point Farm

This is the smallest, friendliest most peaceful of campsites. Fil and Nia made us feel very welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. Loved the loos and showers. Location perfect - a short walk to a really great pub, serving excellent food. Watwick beach also walking distance and highly recommended. Very generous pitch sizes, well spaced apart with pretty wild meadow boundaries. Will definitely stay here again.

Lovely weekend break

Went here for 3 nights for a long weekend break with the kids, a really nice small campsite, not crowded at all, pitches very well spaced out, really nice showers, loads of room for kids to play, the owners were great, made us all feel very welcome. Dale village has a great pub and plenty to keeps the kids busy. Will definitely go again
