Camping and glamping in secluded pitches on top of the world in Pembrokeshire. Views don’t get much better than this.

Hillfort Camping and Yurts was created by affable local land owner John, who was born and bred in the farmhouse in this quite incredible corner of Pembrokeshire. John really is the loveliest of owners, an unassuming guy who just wants people to enjoy their time here. Never fear, though; if you don’t want chat, he won’t force it upon you. And the site? Well, unassuming it definitely is not; instead it is quite simply staggering. You really are camping on top of the world, with the Pembrokeshire coastline unfurling beneath you, like a rolled out carpet.

This immense, panoramic view almost defies description. To put it into perspective, anyone who knows North Pembrokeshire knows that the Strumble Head lighthouse rises from the coastline like an imposing beacon. But, overlooking it from one of Hillfort’s craggy outcrops, Strumble looks like the tiniest, least significant dot in the landscape.

John recently changed the campsite's name from 'Hillfort Tipis' after he stopped renting out the structures and began offering yurts instead. And, while the rest of its name was inspired by the remains of an Iron Age fort on the side of the mountain, it could just as easily be called ‘camping in the clouds’, for that is about as high as it feels. We often write about a place’s sense of space in our Cool Camping recommendations, but this takes space and freedom to another level. Buzzards and kestrels fly overhead, while dolphins can be spotted (with binoculars) from your elevated vantage point. Rabbits and badgers burrow amongst the gorse. Kids clamber up to the cave in the rocks. The perfect place, then, to contemplate life and all that it has to offer.

An old horse lorry houses 2 showers, a kitchen sink and a communal chill-out area. Composting toilets. No electrical hook-ups.

Suitable For

Tents, glampers, campervans, families, couples, dogs on leads – yes. Group bookings can sometimes be accommodated please contact the site directly.

If you are planning to venture further afield for a day trip, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, one of the most spectacular coastal walks in the country, is a must do, as it’s only 30 minute walk from the site. The nearest beaches are the pebbly bays of Abermawr, (with its petrified forest, viewable on low Spring tides) and Aberbach. Seal lovers can drop down the mountain to Pwllderi, to see pups (in season). The popular sandy stretches of Whitesands and Newport are within 30 minutes drive. The area is also a birdwatchers paradise. Sit in the gorse and listen to the warblers try and spot the local choughs or visit nearby Skomer Island (01646 603110). For the more adventurous, there is coasteering, kayakinng and surfing at Preseli (01348 837709)

Food & Drink

Freshly caught fish - when we've been fishing. If you’re up for a simple and satisfying meal, such as fresh local beer battered fish and hand cut Pembrokeshire potato chips, visit The Shed (01348 831518) at Porthgain. Another great place to visit is The Druidstone Hotel and Restaurant (01437 781221), which has been in the Good Food Guide consistently since 1974 and serves delicious homemade food that will suit all tastes.

The Owner Says

The peace and quiet of the Pembrokeshire countryside surrounding our campsite provides the perfect setting for relaxed and stress-free holidays. Our site takes its name from the remains of an Iron Age fort on the side of the mountain, but it could just as easily be called 'camping in the clouds', for this is as high up as Welsh camping gets. Oh, and the panoramic views of Strumble Head and the Irish Sea aren't bad either! As well as camping pitches there is the Seaview yurt, in its own private area in a stunning location at the top of the site.

Fantastic off the beaten track campsite!

Stunning location with great views, wildlife and beautiful walks from campsite. The pitches are well spaced, each with firepit and wood delivered by John every evening who was really friendly & helpful, compost loos and showers very clean, also great to be able to use freezer and charge phones etc. Highly recommend.. especially if you like a more wild and rugged campsite off the beaten track!

Beautiful setting and amazing host

We have just returned from a fantastic trip to Hillfort camping. The location is stunning and we loved waking up to the sea view every day and star gazing by the fire at night. The pitches are very well spaced and does not feel crowded at all, even when full. The facilities are very clean. John who runs the site was amazing, nothing was too much trouble, he supplied us with all the local knowledge, not to mention cooking oil and of course the most delicious salt marsh lamb chops delivered to our pitch..twice! Would definitely recommend this site and the area in general, it’s a beautiful spot! Emily & Alex

A truly special campsite

We absolutely loved Hillfort Camping, it is truly a special place. The pitches are spaced apart and very large so it felt very private, and all the facilities were great (clean compost loos, hot showers and washing up facilites) as well as a firepit on each pitch. John was the best host, delivering firewood and local produce upon request straight to your pitch. The views are spectacular, with great walks straight from the campsite, and incredible sunsets.

Idyllic location for R&R

Idyllic location and views, stunning coastal walks, days relaxing on unspoilt sandy beaches, lobster cooked on the open fire, nights gazing up at the clear starry sky…what a weekend. Hillfort is the perfect antidote for the stresses of modern life. Gorgeous weather helped as did the hospitality of the charming and memorable owner, John. We’ll definitely be back again …

Outstanding, stunning location, clean and comfy 🎉

Beautiful site and lots of space. John is a fantastic host and does everything to make everyone as comfortable as possible. Spacious showers and clean kitchen with kettle and coffee mate for a post shower coffee on the very comfortable outside leather sofa! Great stay 🎉

Beautiful spot, great host.

Had a lovely week here, didn't want to leave. It's a beautiful spot with splendid sunsets. Easy access to the coastal footpath and there's even a bit of decent bouldering to be had on the adjacent craggy outcrop of Carn Fechan. John is the perfect host too, an absolute gent!

A very special spot- a rare unspoilt expanse of space and breathtaking beauty!

John was a delight- with his infectious humour and laid back (and congenial) manner, coupled with his love for this land and how much it matters to him that people are comfortable and relaxed.. combined with the view (highly recommend the Seaview Yurt in particular).. it was hard to leave and head back to the city again at the end.

Such an amazing place

We had such a brilliant time, the site is really beautiful and John a brilliant host. We had a lovely camper pitch with great views... really feels like wild camping but with the added bonus of facilities. Really looking forward to when we can head back again, didn't feel as if we did the place justice over just three nights.

We had a fantastic weekend with the campervan at Hillfort. John is super friendly and helpful - he even went out of his way to get us a crab for dinner! Hillfort itself is beautiful and our pitch was secluded without being too far away from the showers and loos (all nice and clean). We climbed up the rocks for stunning views of the surroundings. There are plenty of things to explore nearby, Hillfort is a great base.

Great Location and Host.

Superb location. Very friendly host. Well equipped site. Lots for the kids to do straight away - walks from the site, views, cycling. John was extremely helpful but not at all intrusive. Lots of organic produce (Fruit, Veg, Meat, etc) if you need it. The yurt was well equipped with everything you need to cook for a family.

Absolutely wonderful place to stay! Stunning views, brilliant host, the yurt was great, spacious and nice and warm - everything you needed was there and if it wasn't Johnny would get it for you immediately! Loved this place, would highly recommend and will certainly be coming again! Thanks for everything.

Lovely spot on Pembrokeshire Coast

Lovely spot on Pembrokeshire Coast in the National Park. This well equipped campsite offers super spacious pitches with some amazing views of the Sea and surrounding hills. There's also some cool crags to play on and some lovely viewpoint walks straight from site offering further fantastic vistas of this beautiful area! ....But one of the best bits about this place is John! He's a fantastic host and simply can't do enough for everyone, probably the nicest and most welcoming chap we've met and a great laugh too! Must mention Sylwia also, she was lovely, very helpful and most efficient when it came to organising our bookings. A highly recommended campsite! Thanks Jon and Sylwia

breathtaking views, nature and tranquillity, incredibly kind owner

The setting is every bit as stunning as the photos, with so much space and tranquillity, which we really appreciated coming from London for a 5 night stay. The local area is very picturesque, with some incredible beach coves nearby, amazing local food and loads of great recommendations from John, the owner. Feels like proper camping, no frills, but clean, organised and well set up for Covid. Delicious steaks and other local produce available on the site, depending on availability. We had an incredible family holiday, which turned into a real adventure once the storm came in... John could not have done more to make sure we enjoyed ourselves - even 're-housing' us in a yurt for one night and then in his own house for the next night until the storm passed!! He is very charming and works extremely hard to keep the site running smoothly. We went on some wonderful walks and climbed up the crags on the campsite for even more breathtaking views. There are some lovely day trips to make nearby as well. We would definitely recommend staying here and would love to come back again. Thanks again John!

Stunning location, great owner

Spent 5 nights camping (3rd to 8th September). The location is amazing with great views from the site and lovely coastal walks on the doorstep including Seals. The facilities were excellent, and kept very clean and sanitised (during Covid measures) by John. John himself was great, checked on us on a daily basis and was always on hand with useful local tips or just for a laugh. We bought logs, kindling etc at very reasonable price to have a fire each night. The meats from John were sublime, Saltmarsh lamb the highlight along with the Steaks on the campfire. A great stay and would highly recommend to others

Excellent location, very knowledgeable owner, stunning scenery

We had a week on the field with individual plots. Weather was variable, exactly what we expected in July. Sunset is soul enriching, winds were tent challenging. John, the owner was full of advice and able to get his hands on some superb local products, we'd go back just for the salt marsh lamb. Nick is the new 'help' always smiling and very practical. You're in for a treat.

Incredible holiday in such a special, magical location!

Myself, my husband and 2 children (7 and 3) had a wonderful, unforgettable holiday based at Hillfort Tipis!! It really is a special place. As soon as we arrived , we felt the magic. We got the best welcome from owner John and Katy. The pitches are so spread out , you really feel away from it all, but we also met some lovely people. You feel ‘on top of the world’ as you look out over the Pembrokeshire coast line, including Strumble Head lighthouse. Wonderful sunsets from the top of the rocks! The children ran wild and had so many adventures!! Beautiful butterflies and other wildlife. Easy to get to all the incredibly beautiful Pembrokeshire sights.....coastal walks, tiny secret beaches, seals and porpoises in the wild, surfing and boarding at bigger beaches, bug house. Plus beautiful St David’s half an hour away. John and Katy, who run the campsite are quite simply the best campsite owners we’ve ever met!! Attentive, caring and so kind. John and Katy will literally do anything to help people enjoy their holiday. John can source local produce for you to cook directly on the fire pit grill eg THE BEST steaks, also fresh eggs/bread etc. The site is so eco- friendly with clean compost toilets, a sheltered washing up area and an amazing horse box converted by John into showers (our kids who usually hate showers whilst camping LOVED these showers because the shower heads changed colour.... yes really!!! ). Thoughtful, fun details. The magic of this place will stay with us for a long time!! So relaxing, chilled out and those views........

Very special place with gorgeous views and brilliant hosts. Myself, husband, 3 boys and the dog had a great week camping. We were lucky with the weather but I am sure we would have still enjoyed it even in the rain. We were also lucky to have a great pitch at the top of the campsite although all the pitches are good, plenty of space, some in a flat field which is more open and probably good for smaller kids so you can watch them play, some are more private. Wherever you camp you can always get a good view and climbing on the rocks gives you a view down to the sea with gorgeous sunsets if you are lucky! There are beautiful purple heathers with tons of butterflies, really feels wild but you are only 10mins drive to Fishguard for your supplies. John, the owner and his partner are lovely, genuine people who will help you with anything if you ask and will make sure you have a great stay. It can get very windy so strong pegs and guy ropes are advised and composting loos might not look great on first sight but is kept very clean and not bad at all once you get used to it! If you want a campsite that is back to basics, get a way from it all, peaceful, great base to tour south west Wales, lovely views, nice walks and to meet friendly, helpful hosts then this is the place to go.

Wild camping but with facilities!

This campsite is absolutely wonderful; you pitch up in a spacious field amongst the lengthy grass and listen to only the grass hoppers chirping. The walking is amazing, direct from the campsite and easily on to the coast path. This is perfect for a de-stress holiday! The facilities are clean; but don’t expect 5-star!

Absolute peace.

Hillfort is one of our best camping experiences ever. We drove up to the site and John showed us up to our ‘penthouse’ pitch and the views were amazing, even more beautiful than we could ever have expected. This can be a breezy site so have a good tent. There is no traffic noise just total peace and bird song. Google earth the site and you’ll see. As previous reviews say, John is just amazing and can’t do enough to help during your stay. He really makes the place what it is. The showers and compost toilets were always very clean. Don’t be put off by compost toilets, they never smell and they are more hygienic than flush toilets. If you walk up the rock there are 360 degree views, a perfect photo opportunity. There are beautiful walks directly from the site. There is lots to do in the surrounding area, Newgale for body boarding, St Davids, Porthgain, Abereidy, Newport Sands, Cardigan, Skomer Island - the list is endless. Just ask John and he’ll have the answer. Thank you John for making our stay so welcoming. Harley, our Lab, sulked when we got home. Can’t wait to return one day.

Without a doubt the best campsite I've ever stayed at. All the quiet, space, and lovely scenery of wild camping in the hills, but with wonderfully hot showers, clean well-kept toilets, a well equip washing up area, and last but by no means least a delightful host whose ingenious efforts to make the site as comfortable as possible, and earnest wish to make our stay as good as possible was the icing on the cake (thanks John!). I wish all campsites were like this.

Nice little, not too peopley, rugged and rustic with views aplenty

Ok, so the lane up to Hillfort Tipis will test your driving, your suspension and your ground clearance. (Mini Cooper) That said, its definitely worth the extra effort. Not too manicured. Surrounded by rolling hills, rugged rock formations, and spectacular sea views within in walking distance. Never more than about 100 yards from a well kept toilet. Warm showers in a rustic style outhouse. Its about a 20 to 30 minute walk to the coast line, where we managed to spot some seals fishing in the aqua blue water. I'd say this camp site is more for the seasoned camper, if tenting it. Definitely bring some extra layers and blankets for the evening as quite high up and can get a little breezy. We went on one of the coldest May day bank holiday weekends though, but still was a good one. John the owner is very kind, funny and enthusiastic ( and Katey behind the scenes ) and will go out of his way to make you feel at home. My 10 year old daughter said she wish she did'nt have to go home yet, which pretty much says it all.

Response from Hillfort Camping and Yurts

Hello Rob, thank you kindly for your great review, we’re really happy you enjoyed your stay. The lane has now been repaired and levelled and is Mini friendly! Would be great to see you and your daughter again, and the amazing wood carvings!

Camping how it should be!

Great hospitality - John (the owner) is every bit as generous with his advice and time as the other reviews state. If you like the greener side of camping with very generous pitches and an awesome location this is for you. If you'd rather a more manicured experience then maybe not. Personally I think it's awesome! But then I have three boys who need to run around and have the most amount of fun.

Wonderful time!

This campsite is gorgeous with brilliant views and lots of space between tents and yurts. We loved it and would definitely go back. John was a legend of a man, really kind, friendly and hospitable and looked after us. Thank you John!

Stunning spot

Beautiful location with lovely coastal views and plenty of room to explore the unspoilt, wildlife-filled surroundings. John is a campsite host like no other - warm, charismatic and willing to go the extra mile for his guests. During our brief stay he made us feel so welcome, dishing out little unexpected treats like popcorn for the kids and even offering us (camping novices) a hand with pitching our tent. Recommended.

Thanks John!!

Beautiful, spacious campsite sandwiched between rolling hills and a lovely beach making for some truly stunning views. The site is eco friendly and the owner is a top guy. My boyfriend and I were made to feel very welcome and very generously treated to an upgrade. The facilities were wonderful and it was certainly one of the highlights of our trip! Would certainly recommend and we will be back soon!!

Stunning campsite

What can I say, we loved it. Jonny and Katy are the best camping hosts we have ever come across, friendly, fun and really helpful. The site is set in a beautiful spot with wonderful views of the Pembrokeshire coast. The facilities are environmentally friendly and very clean. An easy drive to all the other great sights Pembrokeshire has to offer. Would recommend this site to everyone who loves camping and to anyone who has never tried camping before.
Aug 27, 2018 by Marie O'Rourke

Location, views

What a fantastic campsite! John is so helpful and welcoming as a host - dishing out bags of popcorn and marshmallows for the kids! Lovely hot showers in an old horse box and the composting loo is the least ‘fragrant’ we’ve come across!! Watching the sunset from the top of the iron-age fort is a definite must and for early risers, the sunrise is just as impressive! Easy to get around Pembrokeshire with so much to see and do - loads of beaches, National Trust and other things to entertain both kids and dogs alike. Overall a highly recommended campsite - we’ll be back!

Peaceful, friendly and clean

We stayed at the campsite for five nights last week. We camp frequently and this is the best campsite we have stayed at. The owners Katy and John could not have done more to help us and ensure that we were comfortable, various trips over to their farmhouse to ask a question would invariably include being invited to a cup of tea, an ice lolly or a big gin and tonic. If you prefer to be left alone, don't let this put you off as there was no pushiness or obligation involved whatsoever, they are just incredibly good company. The toilets were very clean, the showers were powerful and always had hot water, and the washing up area had ample sponges and washing up liquid, all the little things that fellow campers will know can make or break a camping trip, there is nothing worse than a tepid dribbling shower on a cold morning! The site itself is beautiful, they could accept more bookings and have more people on the site, but instead have created a campsite where everyone has huge amounts of space to themselves. The walks and the nearby Abermawr beach are beautiful, and I also recommend visiting Cardigan, one of John and Katy's recommendations. A beautiful place that we could not recommend more highly. Thanks for making our holiday so brilliant!

Lovely quiet and isolated spot

My boyfriend and I stayed at Hillfort Tipis (if only for one night!) and it was lovely! Lots of space, hardly saw another person and the amenities were great. Hot showers and cute kitchen and there was never a queue. We had a lovely site with a beautiful view and John even bought us marshmellows for the camp fire. We were sad to leave but definitely want to come back again - thanks for having us!

Unbelievable camp site

My Family and I have just spent six days in an amazing camp site..... I have been camping around the south of England for around sixteen years from wild camping to high end camp sites with all the usual add on's, shops, play areas for the kids etc. But never have I experienced such a fantastic camp site as Hillfort. We were welcomed by John and Katey mid afternoon with juice for the adults and ice-cream for the kids, and a full info of all the amenities. What a gentleman John is, and Katey is the perfect hostess along with a wealth of knowledge of local restaurants / beaches for the kids. Two amazing people. From the Eco friendly toilets to the pool table in the field, everything you need when camping. It appears upon arrival, you are in a field on your own as all the toilets, showers etc are all so well set out that you don't actually feel like your on a camp site, excellent. Logs are delivered in the evening for your own camp fire by John or Katey, along with the fact that they take time to have the craic with you. I would recommend that anyone whom is looking for a beautiful camp site with the perfect hosts, to cancel all others and book this site. Obviously, if you want to camp in Ireland or Norway it may not be convenient to get to.

What a gem!

The description is spot on, we’ve had a wonderful few days. Loads of space on this campsite, the views are brilliant and the owners are so hospitable and friendly, even organising outdoor viewing of the World Cup! We camped with our 2 children (4&1) who were made very welcome and we had an entire field to ourselves for most of the trip! If you like space and the outdoors and a few quirky features, excellent views and camp fires, don’t miss this place.

Beautiful & peaceful

Chose this site for my first proper self organised camping experience and was not let down. Katey (one of the owners) was extremely helpful and friendly, showing us to our pitch and making sure we had everything we needed during the course of our stay. We chose the pitch next to the rocky outcrop and could not have been happier. The area for the tent was flat and well kept, surrounded by wild grass and bushes which attracted lots of local wildlife. The campsite was clean and quiet, facilities basic but all you needed. There where two showers in a converted horsebox which had better water pressure than my shower at home and the toilet was compostable which was odd at first but you quickly got used too. There is a small kitchen area to wash dishes and lots of recycling bins. During the weekend we were blessed with lovely weather, though when we arrived and left the site was covered with very atmospheric sea mist. The site was perfectly located to travel to nearby St David's for the Voyages of Discovery boat trip (also recommended) and a walk up the estuary at Newport. Though the site is in inland, it only takes a few minutes to walk to the top of the hill fort to get the most amazing panoramic views of the coastline. Would definitely recommend on a clear night watching the sun set into the sea. Had a fabulous time and would definitely go again.

Sceneric nature campsite with excellence facilities!

We went camping last weekends with our 1 year old son. It was our first time camping in the UK. Quite nervous at first, but the campsite facilities were excellence...feels just like at home! We had a private site and the toilets were close enough! Love the hot shower too! Super clean and tidy. John and Peter were very helpful and friendly! Other campers were friendly too.The coast is just 10 minutes away... and so many walking trails for us to explore! We will love to come back again :)

Honestly Outstanding

Honestly without doubt the best campsite and one of the most inspiring locations I have ever stayed at in the UK, and I have stayed in a few in my many years of being trying to be a nomad. John the owner is a top bloke and brims with character, couldn't have made us feel more welcome. The space between each pitch makes it feel like true wilderness and is the way all campsites should be. Facilities are great, the shower block made out of a horse box, composting loos brilliant. The site location is fantastic, more things to do locally than you could possible fit into a weeks stay. It even has its own mountain and Iron Age hill fort, which is a outstanding place to sit relax have a glass of something and enjoy the sea views. Will be coming back to Pembrokeshire, hopefully to this unique place and to meet its great custodian John again some day.

Thoroughly reccommend!!

Just returned from a 3 night break at Hill Fort Tipis and loved every second! I normally like to go wild camping but thought my young daughter was still too young - so opted for this glamping option. Stayed in the yurt overlooking the sea with 120 degree views. John is the best host I've encountered and was always going above and beyond to ensure that myself, my wife and daughter especially had a good time. Loved our stay and would thoroughly recommend anyone to visit if you haven't done so already!

The best place we've stayed

This campsite exceeds expectations in every measurable way. The location is amazing for views and closeness to everything you want from Prembrokeshire. The area itself is mazzive, so making a lot of noise late into the night wont cause noise complaints from other campers(a problem our group of 20-somethings have had in the past!).

The owner Jon is increadibly accomadating, the best host I've ever had the pleasure to meet (hostels/hotels/campsites inclusive). He is very approachable and is always thinking of ways to go the extra mile.

The price for all this is also incredibly low, which is a big plus.

So much space!

I stayed here last summer (2015) and the blurb written above is spot on. There is a crazy amount of space! If you like a 'wild' sort of feel this campsite is really good. The ground is rough and natural, so if you like mown caravn pitch type things it won't be for you but the views are incredible and for natural camping its spot on. Will be ehading back next time I'm in Wales!

Unbelievable place to stay

We arrived late, but the wonderful John (and the lovely Billy) greeted us with tea and recommendations for our stay.

We followed up on the boat trip around Ramsey Island, fantastic seal spotting and made use of the Stumble Shuttle, a local bus service which stops near the site, meaning you can enjoy more of the stunning coastal path and bus back!

We booked the penthouse pitch, but all the pitches are well spaced out. The toilets are clean and the showers hot and free. The kettle in the pot washing area is ideal for the first cup of tea of the day!

The view in all directions is unbelievable, and this is a truly wonderful place to stay!

Sep 13, 2015 by Zoe

great site

Highly recommend Hill Fort Tipis. As previous reviewers state John is incredibly attentive and helpful but leaves you in peace the majority of the time. The best thing about the site for me was the peace and quiet. The pitches are very spread out. There were 3 families in our field so loads of space for the kids to run around outside the tent. It also meant that we were able to put the kids to bed in peace and quiet. No noisy older kids playing football outside the tent or loud music. The same applied to the mornings. We were woken by the sun and bird song rather than noisy kids asking to get up at 5.30! There was a mix of couples, families with mature kids and a few families with young kids.

We saved the walk up to the rocks for our last morning, thinking we'd have a scramble up, enjoy the view and then head off for home, but we ended up spending the entire morning walking from one rocky outcrop to the other enjoying the beautiful purple heather and yellow gorse as well as the views of the beautiful blue sea.

We had bats flying over our tent in the evening and saw several birds of prey.

John recommended 'Somethings cooking' restaurant  for fish and chips but we can also recommend the 'Hooked' in Fishguard. We had an amazing day at the Dyfed Shire horse centre. Spent the whole day there for £24 with loads to do including horse and carriage ride, nature trail, quad bike/land train ride, petting session, tractor and trailer ride as well as soft play/bouncy castle and covered sand pit with toys and trampolines. As well as the horses and other animals. We also had a great day at Whitesands beach (about 30 mins away) extra fields were opened up so there was plenty of parking. Lovely sandy beach, the tide was out when we arrived and there was an enormous amount of sand to play on. There was an ice cream van and small café/beach shop. Toilets cost 20p

The toilets were kept very clean and well stocked with paper. The showers were hot and free.

We would highly recommend this basic but incredibly peaceful and beautiful site.

You won't beat this

Just got back from the most amazing camping experience we have ever had! Hillfort Tipis is located in a beautiful part of Wales, on top of a cliff overlooking Pembrokeshire countryside on one side and the coast line and amazing blue sea on the other. The pitches are so spread out that you feel like you are camping out in the wilds but with the comfort of the cleanest portaloos I have ever used, shower block and charging station just a little walk away. There is also a fridge and kettle that can be used by the showers, an amazing wooden hot tub that we thoroughly enjoyed and each glamping pitch has a little kitchen shed with all the basics inside. John the campsite owner is a gem, most entertaining and will literally do anything to make your stay perfect, we rocked up with a tent and no poles and next thing he had brought us a variety of tents down, as well as fresh eggs and a fresh sea bass! He helped us light the fire when the wind was bad, bought toys and sweets for the kids, and on my sons birthday surprised him with a laser light show across the hillside. Absolutely wonderful experience, cannot wait to return!

Magical place

A wonderful place with amazing views. We stayed in the penthouse pitch and woke up to sea views each morning and each evening sat by our campfire and watched the lighthouse and stars over the ocean. An incredibly friendly owner who could not have done more to make us feel welcome. This campsite is almost like wild camping, our tent was surrounded by flowering gorse and bluebells. The fact that we had no neighbours and the generous space kept between tents makes this site uniquely special. The facilities are definitely very rustic as this is more of a 'wild camp' style campsite, but if space, peace and quiet appeal to your more than the manicured grass and crowded tents of other sites and you do not worry about roughing it a bit more than some other sites then I recommend you come here! The hot tub is a nice surprise, however, and when we come again if the weather is warmer we would like to use it for sure.

Fantastic Site

Have just returned from a 4 night stay at Penparc. What a place! Beautiful setting - wild and carefree with 360 degree views. No orderly rows of tents here as the pitches are dotted around the landscape, many in their own carved out little niches in the gorse. Our daughters (8 & 12yrs) loved it too - roaming off up to the rocky outcrops at every opportunity and watching the sunset from the viewpoint across to Strumble Head Lighthouse. As mentioned in the other reviews, the owner John IS the friendliest campsite owner around, always ready to help and full of tips for the best places to visit and making you feel very welcome. We were lucky enough to have glorious weather for our stay, allowing a mix of walking and swimming in the sea. The variety of wildlife is amazing and was topped off by sighting porpoises off Strumble Head on our last day! We were sorry to leave and can't wait to go back!

Best wild campsite

This is a great campsite. Wild space, fires possible, views over the sea, bird and other animal life, great cycling and walking round about. And generous, considerate management on site, always available. Can't recommend it highly enough.

The most amazing spot

My partner and I stayed here in August 2012. The day we arrived it was blowing gale force winds and raining - your typical Welsh summertime - but the owner John showed us the pitch and helped us cut back some gorse so we could get nice and low and snug for the night and we stayed dry.

The following day the weather cleared and we saw just how beautiful a spot this is - 360 degree panoramas of cliffs, sea and the rolling hills inland and nothing but 'John's mountain' to block it. The most amazing view I've had from a campsite and John keeps numbers down to a sensible level so everyone has plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy it.

The toilets and showers are robust but did the job and the reliable hot water was a godsend when the weather returned! We had peregrines and kestrels mark our walk down the hill a couple of times.

Can't recommend this place enough and John is the friendliest, most helpful campsite owner we've met - happy to leave you to your own devices or to chat the afternoon away, and his cooked breakfasts are king, as are his G&T mixing skills.
