A rural idyll in the Preseli Hills with shepherd’s huts and spacious camping pitches, each with a private toilet

Cardigan Bay, St Bride’s or Barafundle Beach? Deciding which stretch of the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline to head for can be a real headscratcher. But hang on a second; we’ve got another idea. Pick somewhere in the Preseli Hills and you’ll have all of them within daytripping distance. Not only that, but you’ll also get to experience Pembrokeshire’s other treasures: its ancient woodlands, neolithic standing stones and moorland hills. Choose Brynhaul Camping and Shepherd’s Huts, specifically, and you’ll also get an authentic Welsh experience that you’d be hard pushed to find on the coast.

Brynhaul is on the edge of Maenclochog village and looks across fields to the very highest point in the Preselis, Foel Cwm Cerwyn. If you struggle to find the campsite, just stop at the village café, shop or pub and ask for Elfrys and Steve. You’ll be pointed in the right direction before you’re bid a fond hwyl fawr. Welsh is the first language here and the people are proud; none more so than Elfrys and Steve whose enthusiasm for this land is infectious. They say that a lifetime in Pembrokeshire doesn’t stop you being regularly blown away by its beauty.

Staying at Brynhaul gives you a chance for that too. There are two shepherd’s huts and 13 spacious pitches. The huts offer everything that’s needed for comfortable cooking, eating and sleeping. They are insulated, cosy and open all year and a great place to stay for glampers, out-of-season campers or people adventuring by bike or on foot. All you need to bring is food and, if you’ve booked The Hedgerow Hut, your swimming kit as there’s a muscle-soothing hot tub too.

Over in the camping field, things are more back-to-basics but pitches do come with some practical bells on. Each has a campfire pit, a picnic table, its own compost loo and a tippy-tap sink (you’ll see). There are hot water showers and undercover washing-up sinks that are shared along with the best amenity; the field itself. It’s a hedgerowed, clover covered six acres with views to the hills. It’s bathed in sun when it shines and often blessed with the kind of sunset and stars that can make a camping trip. All this is just 500 yards from the edge of the national park, 15 minutes’ walk from the village, two miles from the top of the Preselis and 10 miles from the closest beach at Fishguard. It’s a rural idyll at the heart of Pembrokeshire, with Pembrokeshire at it’s heart.

Situated just outside the Pembrokeshire National Park with the Preseli Hills on the doorstep, there is plenty of great walking, hiking and biking. The highest point in the Preselis, Foel Cwm Cerwyn, is just two miles from site if you fancy trekking up to it though Steve and Elfrys recommend other circular routes from the site. A short drive away (about six miles) there’s lovely woodland walking in the Gwaun Valley. Llys y Frân Country Park and Reservoir (01437 532 273) has yet more walking routes as well as bike trails and opportunities for watersports. There’s plenty more of that on the Pembrokeshire coast with surfing, paddleboarding, kayaking, coasteering and more all available. Kayak-King (07967 010203) in Fishguard is a good place to start for a sea adventure. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches and coast; Cardigan Bay is to the north, St David’s Peninsula to the west and Barafundle Bay to the south. For anyone interested in history, the reconstructed Iron Age village at Castell Henllys (01239 891319), 11 miles away, is fascinating. With guides in character and plenty of activities, it’s especially good for kids. There are also standing stones near the site, Steve and Elfrys can tell you where and recommend Pentre Ifan, nine miles away, as a nice spot to watch the sunset.

Food & Drink

A 15-minute walk away in the village of Maenclochog is Cafe y Sgar (01437 532078), which is recommended by your hosts. The village also has a drinks-only pub, The Globe (01437 532269), and a village shop which is stocked with local produce including fresh bread, meat and Gethins Cyder, which is made in the village. For a pub that does food, head for the quirky, community-owned Tafarn Sinc (01437 532214) two miles away in Rosebush. The Cross Inn in Clarbeston Road (seven mile from Brynhaul) is another good option that’s recommended and for a truly local brew, join a tour and tasting at The Bluestone Brewery (01239 820 833), eight miles away.

Getting There

From Carmarthen follow the A40 towards Fishguard for about 18 miles. Two miles beyond the village of Llandewi Velfrey, head onto the A478 signed for Cardigan. Continue for five miles through Clunderwen, Llandisilio and Efailwen until you come to a crossroads with a garage on the right and the Cross Inn pub on the left. Turn left and at the end of the road turn right. After passing Pont Hywel Mill, turn right. Follow this road for a couple of miles until you reach Brynhaul on your right.

Brynhaul is not far from Sustrans cycle route 47, which connects Newport to Fishgaurd, so arriving by bike is a great way to get here; whether as part of a cycle tour or after the train to one of the local stations. The closest are request stops at Clarbeston Road or Clynderwen (Clunderwen), both around seven miles from the campsite. The closest station with other onwards means is Haverfordwest or Fishguard. Buses to the village operate infrequently so a taxi would be best for the final 11–12 miles to Brynhaul Camping and Shepherds Huts.
