Llainpropert Camping The Greener Camping Club
Llainpropert Cottage, Croesgoch, St Davids, Pembrokeshire SA62 5JY
As the Beach Boys put it, "it's a genuine fact that the surfer's rule". While the beaches of West Wales might not have been immortalised in timeless pop melodies à la Huntingdon or Malibu, surfing is serious business on the Pembrokeshire coast. So if like Brian Wilson and the boys, "surfin' is the only life/the only way" for you, we've found the perfect campsite base for hitting the waves.
Helmed by genial owner Stephen, Llainpropert Camping is a lush, spacious field with preposterously picturesque views. Availability here is determined by occupancy and not pitch allocation meaning there's ample room for everyone to enjoy this unspoiled pocket of Pembrokeshire: "Camper experience is paramount," stresses Stephen, "so there's absolutely no over-crowding".
Set a little back from the coast, the site sits equidistant from the wildflower-strewn headland and the pristine beach at Abereiddy. Nestled in quaint Croesgoch, on the fringes of the tourist-mecca that is St Davids, there's a real sense of seclusion here – as if the beaches below are your own private playground. It's well and truly a family-run affair, with an infectiously convivial air pervading the whole site thanks to a mixture of families, many of whom are regulars. As such, party monsters should probably head further down the coast.
Llainpropert doesn't rely on flashy gimmicks or onsite entertainment – sure, with a view like this and access to some of the world's best surfing beaches, why would they? The whole set up is refreshingly understated. There's a communal summerhouse-cum-kitchen, a dining area (great for getting to know your fellow campers), while the immaculately clean shower/toilets and are housed in an ingeniously adapted shipping container. The generously-sized plots (to call them pitches would be do them a disservice) on well-mown grass are all equipped with electric hook-ups and, for a little flourish of luxury, Stephen has also installed a sturdy wooden log pod – for anyone a little trepidatious about exposure to the coastal winds.
Don't be intimated if you're new to the ways of the board, 'sultan of surf' Stephen will happily give you a crash course. From board and wetsuit hire to recommendations for the best spots and daily surf reports. Stephen and his son Grant also run local surfboard manufacturing business, Unsung Hero. Be sure to ask Stephen about visiting the workshop to see these master craftsmen at work. You can even make your own surf-ready, alaia board in just one day – the ultimate memento.

Excellent site. Spotlessly clean. Level. Short grass. Good pub/fish and chip shop 2 minutes drive or 20 minutes walk along quiet side road.
