Penrallt Goch The Greener Camping Club

UK Wales South Wales Pembrokeshire

The Old Farmhouse, Penrallt Goch, Newchapel, Boncath, Pembrokeshire, SA37 0HH
A small camping and glamping site on a working Pembrokeshire poultry farm with excellent woodland walks and roaming free-range chickens!

Plenty of campsites are blessed with bountiful birdlife, and Penrallt Goch is no exception. Blackbirds flitter along the bushy meadow hedges; fledgling chicks chirp their morning song, while buzzards and red kites are regularly spotted soaring overhead. Yet while the natural bird-life is rich and varied at this pretty Pembrokeshire patch, there’s also an array of avian residents of an altogether different kind. Set on a working poultry farm, this campsite shares its borders with free-range chickens, ducks and dozens of inquisitive turkeys. So while the campsite may not be open in winter, the farm still has a busy trade come Christmas!

The many animals of the campsite (there are also horses and sheep) make this campsite a boon for children. Farmers Phil and Rachel are happy for little ones to join them as they do the evening rounds – feeding the chickens and locking them up for bed – but it’s the varied accommodation on offer that pleases most family visitors. Fancy camping? There are a couple of pitch-your-own spots in a flat, grassy area of the farm. Glamping more your thing? Try the safari tent if you want space or there’s a cosy pod for couples. A bell tent and yurt make up the total offering, giving you plenty of choice. All are well looked after and come with all the beds, bedding and linen you need.

Indeed, along with farming and running the glamping site, Phil is a real Jack-of-all-trades. He’s a qualified canoe instructor – leading trips along the nearby River Teifi – and a GB archery instructor too. You can organise both, simply by chatting to him at the campsite (though pre-booking is advised in the school holidays). He’ll happily set up his archery targets so that you can have a go at shooting with his traditional recurve bows and on weekends he arranges bushcraft activities on demand, including shelter-building and traditional firelighting using flint, steels and various tinders.

The landscape immediately around the campsite means you needn’t jump in the car to find things to do. Footpaths and cycle trails weave through the local area and there’s a great pub within 10 minute’s walking distance. When you do decide to explore by motor, the Pembrokeshire coast is less than half an hour away and the nearest beaches are just 7 miles as the crow flies. Or should that be 'as the red kite flies'. Or is it blackbird? Chicken?

The Owner Says

Set in North Pembrokeshire, Penrallt Goch is a secluded rural location. Situated down a private track, our rolling fields provide a lush green, tranquil environment. The name, a localised version of Pen-yr-allt-goch is taken from the thriving red woodland it is surrounded by- translating to Top of the Red Woods. Our chickens are free to wander around the fields all day, producing really tasty eggs. Our ducks are grown here and their meat tastes great, they are all allowed outside once they are big enough that they can start to look after themselves. Also around the farm we have horses, sheep, and from October we have Turkeys to be growing for Christmas. Glamping holidays with us are a great way to come and experience the countryside, giving the outdoor life a go but with the luxury of proper beds and cooking facilities. Our lovely location has great views, is peaceful and quiet, and a great place to get away from it all.

We've just returned from our first glamping holiday- a 2 night break in the safari tent and we loved it!! Rachel greeted us with a very warm welcome and showed us to the tent and gave us all the info we needed. The tent is very spacious and kitted out with all the essentials and the fresh eggs were a tasty bonus!! There is so much space around the tent too- it really gave us an "away from it all" feeling and our two dogs were loving exploring the field. The shower and compost toilet in the horse box was great, and certainly a highlight for our three-year old daughter Georgie. We enjoyed some lovely walks nearby and Rachel was so kind to let Georgie "help" with feeding and brushing the horses and showing us the turkeys, chickens and ducks! We would have loved to stay longer but also know that we shall return very soon to this charming, peaceful farm. Thank you again and see you soon
