A pretty and oh so friendly little tent and yurt-site just a short walk from the beaches of the Pembrokeshire coast

Just a 20 minute walk from Mill Haven beach, a secluded cove backed by the Pembrokeshire coast path, Mill Haven Place offers a state of quiet calm in campsite form. Its setting, tucked away down a leafy drive, past two yurt fields and down by a cluster of traditional, whitewashed, stone cottages, is the very definition of rural. If you like the company of just a handful of campers and the flickering of open campfires, you’ve come to the right place. Surrounded by trees, it feels both sheltered and wonderfully spacious and for children it’s a blissful sanctuary – littl’uns will have a whale of a time rushing about playing rounders, cricket or hide and seek. It’s a good spot for wearing them out for a deep night’s sleep too.

While the ambiance here is all about traditional, back-to-basis camping, it still lends itself perfectly to families. The showers are excellent, with water sourced from a borehole, and a composting toilet is accompanied by two proper flushing toilets in the main ablutions block. Campervans, meanwhile, are also welcome, provided they’re happy to go without electricity and muck in with the self-sufficient ethos, while caravans occasionally turn up too on the same basis.

For those who really want to take it easy, though, more pampered parents can leave the camping gear at home and pluck for one of the fully decorated abodes in the yurt field – think floral bunting, tin ceramics and solar-powered fairy lights. The previous campsite owners planted some 1,500 young trees when they first opened in 2009 and, set among them, the yurts will one day be almost hidden in the woods. Today they offer a well spread community in a sapling dotted meadow. Each sleeps up to four, with two single futons either side of a beautiful cast iron king-size bed. One of the best things about the yurts is how they smell – a delicate tinge of wood smoke from the tiny stoves that sit inside each one. They also all have their own accompanying camp kitchens with a twin gas hob and grill for toast, cool box, and all the cooking paraphernalia you could ever want – tin-enamel dinner set anyone?

While potential visitors may hum and har over the difficult choices – back to basics camping or bunting spangled glamping? – it’s ultimately the location that sets Mill Haven Place apart. Between the sheltered village of Dale and the quaint fishing village of Little Haven (and its neighbour Broad Haven), Mill Haven Place certainly isn’t a campsite that leaves you short of things to do. There are beaches in abundance and activities for all, ranging from fishing, swimming and walking to kayaking, sailing or taking out a surf-board to test yourself on the waves. And all offer a good excuse for ‘refuelling’ in one of the campsite’s five local pubs when you’re done. It all shows that it takes more than just bunting to make a top notch campsite. Mill Haven Place is a place that has it all.

Lovely place to stay!

We only stayed for one night but wish we'd had time for a longer stay! Mill Haven Place is a really lovely quiet site with friendly hosts and great facilities. We particularly liked the environmentally friendly set up that has been created! We had a nice walk down to Little Haven for dinner (our only recommendation would be to book a table - it was very busy!). Will definitely be back!

Friendly, secluded site

We had a wonderful week at Mill Haven Place. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and the kids made fast friends over football games and toasting marshmallows. The fire pits, picnic tables and showers/fridge and freezers add up to just what you need for a back-to-basics yet comfortable stay. The campsite field was slightly busier than the website suggests, though, with more like 8–9 pitches. It's a lovely walk to the closest beach, where you can join the coastal path, but it's quite pebbly and seaweedy – there's better swimming and fun to be had at nearby Marloes Sands and Broad Haven, which are spectacular.

Wonderful stay

Spent 4 nights camping at Mill Haven Place. I think what sets this campsite apart from all the others I've stayed at, is how small it is. With just 8 tent pitches and plenty of room per pitch you are rewarded with a lovely friendly little campsite. We even ended up spending the last day on the beach with our camping neighbours. Great for families as its quiet and safe with minimal cars coming and going. Cars weren't allowed on the field which also made it feel very child friendly. Facilities are basic but very much adequate and clean. Nice hot showers and each tent has a fire put. Rural location. With lots of beautiful beaches nearby. We also enjoyed visiting Pembroke Castle. Lou and Paddy around if you needed them and both very helpful. Overall a fab discovery and we will go back.

Thank you Mill Haven Place!

We were lucky enough to secure a special one-night stay in the lovely Paddy and Lou's newly acquired gypsy wagon – it isn't officially available to book yet so this was a real treat. Our ailing tent was battered by the previous nights' weather further along the coast, so the sturdy waterproof wagon was incredibly welcome. Set in a secluded corner of the field furthest from the car park, this cute antique wooden caravan is a perfect little cosy cabin for couples, with an ultra-comfy cabin bed and plenty of underneath storage. Fairy lights illuminate the inside and there's a firepit outside (help yourself to logs, kindling and firelighters and pop the money in the honesty box). There's a well-maintained compost loo nearby, plus a washing-up area and shower dispensing piping hot water and excellent pressure.

The site itself is beautiful. You enter down a secluded lane that reminded us of The Kingsroad from Game of Thrones! At the main farm hub, there's a big barn with washing facilities and parking. The two spacious fields are kept that way by not packing in the campers and there's ample room for the family to chuck a frisbee around or for kids to explore. High shimmering willows separate the fields, creating a sense of seclusion and also a welcome windbreaker from the coastal bluster.

Next time we visit, we'd love to stay in one of the yurts which come with their own adjacent kitchen shelter (something also planned for the completed gypsy wagon). Or if there's a few of us, the farm cottages look like a great option. The location is cracking with the secluded cove of Mill Haven beach a 20 min walk away – keep your eyes peeled for seals! Broad Haven and Little Haven are also nearby for provisions and surfing.

Great location and great facilities

My husband and I have just come back from a wonderful weekend in Pembrokshire and a stay at this lovely campsite. It was the first time we rented a Yurt and all the things you would expect to take away with you were all there. I would recommend this site to anyone who is looking for a campsite with a personal touch from the owners. Looking forward to coming back already.

Peaceful and pretty!

Mill Haven Place is a peaceful, pretty and well equipped campsite, the owners were really helpful and have developed special willow hedges with little hide-aways that attract lots of wonderful birds to watch and listen to! Each pitch has a picnic bench and fire pit and you're so close to the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast. Would definitely recommend.
