2 glamping pitches · 13 tent pitches
One of the most spacious campsites in the UK, set in a magical pocket of wooded Pembrokeshire paradise

With just 13 pitches set in a whopping 60 acres, Kitewood must surely be one of the UK’s most spacious campsites. The scattering of generously-sized pitches can easily accommodate the largest modern tents, with open moorland between the wooded areas and rabbit-run-like pathways linking the various pitches and facilities. In total it amounts to around two and a half miles of trails and yet, amongst it all, there’s still space to access most of the pitches by car at the start and end of your holiday. Otherwise the place is blissfully vehicle free; ideal for kids to turn feral and for wildlife to flourish. Which is really what this place is all about: Space, freedom and a whole load of good greenness for Mother Earth.

Kitewood is a family run site, helmed by Jacki, Graeme, Toby and Mylo who, between them, are carpenters, arborists, engineers and conservationists, working to create a refuge for wildlife (and people) on the outskirts of Fishguard. The wood, previously dominated by forestry-friendly Sitka spruce, is now being thinned and diversified, as they plant a whole host of broadleaf saplings alongside. There are hidden ponds, hummocks and dells too, creating a truly enchanting and biodiverse landscape, with dragonflies aplenty and birds and bats to be spotted day and night.

Amongst the foliage, of course, is a campsite. And the family seems well trained on that subject too. Each pitch, nestled in a private glade, has its own compost loo and hot shower (a ‘woodland en-suite’ as Toby likes to call it) and there’s a covered campfire area with a picnic table and an unlimited supply of free wood. For glampers, there are a couple of pre-pitched and furnished tipis, emblazoned with full-colour fairytale dragons, designed and created by the local children’s author Jackie Morris. And for everyone there’s a general ‘hub’ and dishwashing space, with a pizza oven that’s fired up once a week.

Off site, it’s around 30 minutes’ walk to the waterfront in Fishguard, where you can pick up the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Some of the best stretches of the route are nearby, including the undulating, clifftop path out to Strumble Head Lighthouse, and some of the best coves and beaches, like Abercastle and Aberiddy’s Blue Lagoon are within a 20-minute drive. Not that you need to go much beyond the campsite to find good walks. The nooks of the woodland provide ample intrigue right on your doorstep and there’s something undeniably pleasant, here, about simply staying put, watching the Red Kites fly overhead and listening to the breeze in the trees.

Hideaway Woodland Camping Pitch
Second time as lovely as the first
Great site if you want a peaceful getaway. Everything you need on your own pitch - shower, loo, tap, covered fire and seating area! Easy to borrow a wheelbarrow and stock up on firewood as needed or wash up at the communal sink area. Love this place, this was our second time visiting.

Hideaway Woodland Camping Pitch
We picked this place to try because it looked like a lovely woodland location and sounded great to have your own shower and toilet within a large private pitch - Kitewood didn’t disappoint. The Shrew pitch we stayed on was large but still most of it was nestled into the woodland so it was nicely hidden away. Having our own bench and campfire area with firewood to help yourself was just perfect to sit around early morning and late into the evening. The shower was clean and hot with eco toiletries there and a tap for drinking water too. There is a nice big communal wash up area to use and a bar/games sheltered space down the track from the pitches. The bar wasn’t open because of the time that we went but there’s table tennis and a few buckets & spades, books, games etc to use. We didn’t see another person the whole weekend and it was so peaceful and perfect for what we wanted - the greetings we got were from robins in the morning and a toad at night! However, the owners did get in touch the morning of our arrival just to give directions and offer any help so that was lovely to know they were available if needed. Already wondering when to book again!

Hideaway Woodland Camping Pitch
The campsite was fantastic - we stayed on Alder pitch which treated us to robins joining us for breakfast most morning. Plenty of room for our tent, with loo and shower just for us. The pitch had its own tap and firepit, with a covered picnic area for cooking and generally surviving the Welsh weather. We have 8 year old twins who absolutely loved the independence of being able to explore the site. It was a great combination of being off grid enough to recharge but close enough to Fishguard to keep kids happy. Would thoroughly recommend this magical place. It rained much of the week and we didn't even mind. It's slightly tricky to find so have a look for it on Google Street view, the turn is just opposite the stone cottages. Can't wait till we can go back again!

Hideaway Woodland Camping Pitch
We stayed in Kitewood for a rainy weekend but our all stay was wonderful. It is a beautiful site, conveniently located to the beaches, places of interest, cafes and places to eat. The site is very well organised and there are communal places where you can spend your time if you wanted to. The pitches are very generous and private. Eco Toilets are good and it's great to have a hot shower allocated just to yoir pitch. The site manager is very kind and helpful. We have truly magical weekend and our kids loved there. Highly recommended site!

From the host
Kitewood Camping is set in 60 acres of woodland near Fishguard and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park – the ideal location for camping in Pembrokeshire. Just twelve woodland pitches and two Tipis (our Dragon Tipi glamping option) means that if it is space you want, it is space that you are going to get. Each pitch is nestled in a woodland glade and comes with its own compost toilet and private hot shower (or woodland ensuite as we like to call it). As well as covered campfire area, picnic table, fire pit, unlimited hot water, and free firewood. The surrounding woodland and open moors provide ample opportunity for exploring Kitewood. Keep your eyes peeled while you do so for the myriad of wildlife with which you are sharing the woods on your camping holiday in Pembrokeshire. Come and enjoy a ‘back to nature’ Pembrokeshire camping experience where couples, families or small groups, can enjoy slowing down to a more serene pace of life – ‘Kitewood time’.
Nearby attractions

Kitewood is set just a mile or so from the coast and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Path, so there are breathtaking beaches nearby (around 15–30 minutes drive for most). The nearest, Goodwick Sands, is a family-friendly town beach which is only a five-minute drive or 40-minute walk away. There's also the spectacular sandy stretch at Newport Sands (locally known as Traeth Mawr or Big Beach) and Druidstone further along towards St Davids – the UK's smallest city. Fishguard is within a 20 minutes' walk and there are shops for all your provisioning and day to day needs.

Food and drink
The campsite has a wood-fired pizza oven that's fired up once per week during the school holidays to cater for guests (think authentic sourdough pizza using local ingredients). For everything else, Fishguard is within walking distance, where view-tastic BarFive (01348 875050), overlooks the harbour – a place for a quiet drink rather than good food – and JT at 3 Main Street (01348 492185) offers good cocktails. The Royal Oak (01348 218632) has low beams and a notable plaque commemorating the defeat of a bizarre french raid in 1797 (the peace treaty was signed in the pub), while daytime bites are found in Gourmet Pig (01348 874404; the best coffee in the village) and the freshest local produce at Mannings Grocers (01348 874100). For fish and chips and homemade ice-cream Hooked@31 (01348 874657) is the one. When the weather's at its best, it's well worth the 15-minute drive to Pwllgwaelod Beach for the very last views of the evening sun at the characterful Old Sailors (01348 811491) – a classic, quiet smugglers pub dating from 1593, with views from the garden across Fishguard Bay.
