Simple, eco-friendly camping with epic views at the foot of a famed Welsh mountain range

Cwmffrwd Farm's, Pengenffordd off-grid, pop-up site is a back-to-nature retreat for those looking for simple camping in stunning surroundings. Nestled within 22 acres of wildflower meadows, the spacious pitches for campers and glampers alike make visitors feel like they've found a secret spot in South Wales, tucked away amid towering mountains at the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Exemplified by the site's focus on maintaining the natural biodiversity of their surroundings, hosts James and Pridie are advocates of outdoor life and positive environmental change, with James having worked in the energy and environment sector for over a decade, while Pridie is a qualified teacher and Mountain Leader. As such, the amenities may be basic here, but they're situated in a site owned by people who know a great outdoor spot with a view when they see one.

Its camping pitches are spaciously spread out across its meadows Onnen, Cyll, and Helyg. The latter has a gate that opens out onto the Waun Fach mountain range, with its summit height of 811 metres granting it the highest peak of south-eastern Wales' Black Mountains. Freely select your pitch, plant your tent, and explore your surroundings with minimal fuss. For glamping, choose between the two five-metre bell tents in the small Hafod meadow, or the four-metre bell tent in Aelwyd Field. The five-metre tents have the meadow all to themselves, providing a sprawling view across the valley along with a lovely babbling brook to sit beside. The four-metre tent also gets to keep its field to itself, surrounded with alder, ash, and hazel, and situated right next to the stream.

The secluded nature of Cwmffrwd Farm ensures guests' privacy compared to other, more densely populated sites, along with keeping this beautiful land unspoiled. This is reflected in the simple amenities, with composting loos in the meadows and a washroom and toilet located in the 'The Byre', with hot water and an electric shower. Be sure to say "hello" to the family dog, who loves to greet guests in the barn.

Your mountainous surroundings provide ample opportunities for lengthy rambles and hikes, while guests should ditch their phones (there's no WiFi here, allowing a firm disconnect from modern life) and replace them with books from the site's little outdoor library, which also contains charts to help you identify the resident wildlife. You and the kids can also enjoy Pridie's 'Fairytrails' outdoor storying adventures, immersive nature-based yarns that combine folklore, natural navigation, and your wilderness skills. Suffice to say, you won't forget Cwmffrwd Farm in a hurry.

Details

Facilities

With this being an off-grid campsite, the facilities are simple here. There are two composting loos (one in the camping meadows and one in the bell tent meadow), and a single flushing toilet, a hot shower and washing-up area located at the end of 'The Byre' barn in the farmyard. Behind the washroom is the drinking tap, and there is also a chemical toilet disposal point behind the barns (green eco fluid only).

Suitable For

Camping, glamping, dogs (camping and glamping), and small VW/Transit size campervans (there's space for three on-site) - yes. Caravans motorhomes - no.

Nearby

Campers can embark on picturesque travels straight from their tent, with the site being within reach of Waun Fach, an open-access mountain with the highest summit of southeast Wales' Black Mountains. The gorgeous town of Crickhowell is a 15-minute drive away from the site, providing you with an array of shops to visit in this small Usk Valley community. In the surrounding area, the site resides in the heart of Brecon Beacons National Park, offering scenic walks through the stunning countryside. Enjoy the Brecon Promenade, a grade 2 walk along the river Usk, or look across the lakes and ponds as part of the Craig-y-nos route. Also tucked away in this National Park is the Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (01874 658272), an award-winning indoor and outdoor centre with horse riding, an indoor climbing centre, and pony trekking trips. For a night out with the family, Theatr Brycheiniog (01874 611622) is a little under 30 minutes away, a modern theatre and community venue, with a variety of shows from ballet through to comedy clubs.

Food & Drink

The Farmers Arms (01874 202132) is around a 5-minute drive from the site, located in the village of Cwmdu and serving pub classics and a delicious Sunday lunch. Nantyfinn Cider Mill Inn (01873 810775) is a 10-minute drive, with this stylishly rustic pub serving a traditional Welsh menu. For those with an adventurous palate, the New Gurkha Inn (01874 711581) is a little under six miles away and serves authentic Nepalese and Gurkha cuisine, with a specialised chef blending Indian and Chinese cuisine. The Owner Says

We are a pop-up campsite open every weekend from May to end of August. Calls or emails about staying outside of those times are very welcome.

Named after the stream that tumbles down from the mountain and through twenty two acres of wildflower meadows, Cwmffrwd Farm is an off-grid camping sanctuary. Picture it - the mountains gently stretching before and behind you, the smell of woodsmoke lingering in the air, children weaving their way through the long grass and giggling as they try to catch the crickets...

Preserving a sense of wilderness is at the heart of everything we do, and to protect the natural biodiversity we keep things really traditional and basic. We only open for a set period each year and provide a small number of camping pitches (so space is never an issue!) To minimise impact on the meadows and keep everyone safe, we have a no vehicles policy in the campsite and ask that guests park at the entrance to the field where wheelbarrows are provided for you to move your kit to the pitch you have chosen. As much as possible, we like to give everyone free range when it comes to choosing their pitch in our two camping fields - so have a wander once you are parked and, when you are ready, grab a wheelbarrow and off you go! There is no additional charge for pup tent, gazebo or awning.

Certainly don’t come expecting Wi-Fi. Instead, enjoy rummaging around in the little outdoor library for books and charts to help you identify the resident birds and mini beasts, or go for a paddle in the stream and see if you can spot any creatures in the alder, willow, hazel and hawthorn that thrive across the site.

Along with the seclusion of each individual pitch, the farm feels like it is tucked away too. It’s 12 minutes drive to  picturesque Crickhowell  (and a superb wild swimming spot), and 25 minutes to celebrated book town Hay-on-Wye and bustling market town Brecon. It’s best to stock up on food before you arrive, or shop at local supermarkets in Brecon, Abergavenny or the high street in Crickhowell.

Social Distancing Measures

All our pitches are spaces at a considerable distance from each other, making it easy to socially distance. Hand soap, sanitiser, disinfectant spray and blue roll to wipe the toilet seat etc. are all provided in the campsite washroom. The washroom is very well ventilated.

Medicine for the soul

There’s not much more we can say about this beautiful campsite that hasn’t already been written here, but we felt we should write a review after such a deeply nourishing stay! From the first moment when Pridie appeared at the gate just as we arrived, to the heavy moment we knew we had to leave (having stayed one more night than planned - where else on our road trip could be as good as this?Answer: nowhere), this place continued to be just what we needed. Space. Space! Real space between pitches! As soon as we arrived a big beautiful Ash tree sitting in long meadow grass invited our 6 year old to run off and read a book underneath it as soon as we arrived (she loved the stories to be explored around the site). We sat there looking up over the mountainside with a cup of tea (or was it a beer?) and that feeling of landing never really left. Hot shower, awesome compost toilet (and another being built), fire pit, a kettle in the Byrne just in case you need a quick brew before an early morning walk and your gas stove isn’t working, walk-in-walk-out mountain routes all around, and small-person-friendly walks around the lanes underneath, this place is bliss. Our 6 year old says “ it’s the best campsite ever, but don’t tell everyone because I want it to be the same when we go there again. When can we go there again? Next weekend?”. She’d fallen in love with it, as we had. The hosts are perfect and we’re so happy they plan to keep the place as authentically ‘wild camping with extras’ as it is now…they sold spare batteries and firewood, helped when our van needed a bit of tlc, and told stories under the stars…we just adored our stay here and will be back as soon as we can.

My goodness, thank you so much Hannah for taking the time to share this. I can confirm 💯 that this little campsite will definitely stay just as it is - it means so much to us that our guests have lots of time, space and peace in the mountains and we are over the moon that you found that when you visited. We absolutely loved having you to stay and really look forward to seeing you all again next season 😊

Relaxing stay at a friendly campsite

We had a wonderful long weekend at this campsite, just about managing to catch the last of the summer sun! We arrived quite late in the evening on Friday but Pridie was so welcoming and friendly! She gave us a choice of different pitches and we settled on one next to a little stream which our dog spent all weekend playing in. Pridie was also able to recommend lovely local walks, straight from the campsite. The facilities were always clean and well maintained and each pitch benefits from a ready made fire bowl which we really put to good use! We can recommend the Waterfall Walk and also the Beacons Farm Shop at The Welsh Venison Centre - they make incredible burgers!

Response from Cwmffrwd Farm, Pengenffordd

Thank you so much Jennifer! I'm off to go grab one of those burgers now - you've made my tummy rumble! 😆 We loved having you stay and hope you'll be able to return again next season 😊

Magical

Cwmffrwd Farm is one of those places that it is easy to fall in love with. Nestled in a valley, surrounded by breathtaking views in all directions, we spent hours just watching the changing light on the mountains and wandering the meadows while kites circled overhead. There are stunning walks (straight from the site) or, a short drive away, swimming spots and mountain trails. The owners, Pridie & James have created a low density haven in a truly stunning valley and they are super lovely hosts! Facilities are simple, but more than sufficient, and careful consideration had been made to make our stay on the farm a real time of tranquility. Can’t recommend this site enough and we will be back with the kids and promises of more mountain adventures, stream paddling, grass tunnelling, stories around the fire and, most of all, the magic of the valley overlooked by the beautiful mountains. We didn’t have clear skies for our visit this time so also look forward to stargazing while the owls hoot nearby. Can’t wait to get back.

Lovely relaxing spot

We had a great stay here. This was our four month old's first camping trip so we went for the bell tent glamping option and it was lovely and cozy. The site is in a stunning location with easy access to the ridge to get to Waun Fach or head towards Sugarlof. Pridie and James were really welcoming and helpful and have set up a great site.

A secret oasis of nature :-)

What a beautiful night we had staying at the campsite. The landscape and surroundings are wonderful, and we loved the friendly and laid back vibe. Pridie welcomed us (along with the dog!) and showed us to our camper van pitch. We woke up to peace and quiet, and had a lovely walk up the mountain. This really is a little gem and I almost don’t want to tell too many people about it! The Byre washroom was also very cute, with lots of personal touches and great local info to read. My only negative is that we were only there for 1 night - so we will certainly be back next summer as soon as possible! :-)

Beautiful, secluded & peaceful campsite

Loved my visit to this campsite - arrived early evening & was met at the gate by our lovely host, Pridie. Bats were flying around us as she showed me to the few campervan locations, telling me about the milky way that can be seen on a clear night. My stay was far too short - just one night as I was hiking Brecon Beacons the next day, but I will certainly come back to this campsite.

Beautiful spot with direct access to stunning hiking experience

We booked for 2 nights but stayed for 3 in our little campervan. We got a flat spot at the bottom of the field where the views are fantastic but if you have a tent you can access an even nicer view at the top of the field (but not so flat). The owners are very welcoming and helpful. Pitches are large. The facilities in the barn are really clean and comfortable, and you can borrow books and maps to plan your hikes. We spent a wonderful day going up the mountain, the views are absolutely stunning. We also managed to forage some bilberries which grow abundantly halfway up. We got back and had an open campfire while watching the sun set golden across the mountains. We did have a clear night which meant we were treated to a really fabulous night sky, as there is no light pollution nearby. If you want to drive you can access so many lovely parts of the Brecon Beacons within half an hour. The local village is also very picturesque with plenty of interesting independent shops, cafes and bars. This is a real find I would recommend it to anyone!

Beautiful, relaxed campsite

What a lovely relaxing weekend, in stunning surroundings, with warm and welcoming hosts, Pridie and James. The campsite was well spaced, with great facilities, I really liked wonky Bob the composting loo. I can't wait to return and get back up those mountains.

What a gem!

I can't begin to say how wonderful our stay at Cwmffrwd Farm was. Such an idealic spot, quiet as a mouse, away from the hustle and bustle without being *too* far to venture back for food/drink in town, beautiful hikes literally on the doorstep, firepits as standard and the camper pitches are so spaced out so you can't even hear a whisper from your neighbours! The facilities are few, but more than adequate for the size of the site, you may find yourself waiting 10 minutes or so for a shower, but they are very well looked after with a fantastic rustic charm. There was one overly enthusiastic sheep who ran into the field as happens sometimes in farmland campspots so please just make sure dogs are under control. Pridie and James are such lovely hosts, great communicators, enthusiastic, knowledgeble and always happy and eager to help with anything you need. They have built something special here. One of my top places to camp now, we'll definitely be returning soon to see the Milky Way over our heads as Pridie promised!

Hidden gem in an idyllic location

What a beautiful place! Set amongst the rolling mountains and at night beneath the Milky Way, we couldn’t have have asked for a more idyllic place to sleep under the stars. We had an incredible time spending a few nights in the camper, Pridie and James couldn’t have been more helpful and the facilities were perfect. Can’t wait to revisit again soon, thanks for sharing your perfect spot with us!

Comfort, nature, reinvigorating - a treat!

From a spur-of-the-moment booking, after a chance discovery, our young family had an incredible welcome and overnight stay in Bell Tent Number 2. Such a perfect place for rediscovering the wild, safely. Such knowledgeable and friendly hosts. Facilities are appropriately "grass roots" for a meadow campsite, and are still luxurious and impeccably maintained. ...Looking forward to our return trip already!

Quite literally our best camping experience in forever!

Literally our new favourite campsite in all the UK. WHAT a spot. WHAT hosts. The view from the tent and our campfire - up to the mountains - was utterly incredible - and that was BEFORE the stars all came out (the area is in a zero light pollution zone so the stars are incredible). Being able to walk - with my 8 year old - straight from our tent to the top of Wuan Fach and then back to our campfire was simply perfect. The owners were always on hand to help and provide wood and tips for the walk etc. An absolutely perfect little camping trip and the place is flawless. Loved it.

Charming site ,fab setting.

A little gem , off the road from Talgarth to Crickhowell. Huge pitches ( we had a campervan pitch ) in a beautiful mountain environment. Every care is taken to minimise the impact of visitors including a vehicle van to the camping meadows and a composting loo ( wonky bob😁) As night falls you become aware of the 🌟 stars and on the clearest of nights we could clearly see the milky way whilst sat round our log fire 🔥 . Walks from the camp take you directly onto the black mountains and offer wonderful views across the Brecon beacons national park. Hosts are lovely, friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Fantastic getaway

We had a brilliant time at Cwmffrwd Farm. Pridie went above and beyond to make our stay magical, and nothing was too much bother. Highlights for our family included the fantastic views, warm welcome each day and Pridie’s campfire story telling which was brilliant. The bell tents had everything you needed for a comfortable stay, and the toilet facilities were great. Couldn’t recommend highly enough. This campsite is likely to develop and grow over time and we can’t wait to return to see what they have done next!

This is where you can really immerse yourself in the beautiful Black Mountains. The site is thoughtfully laid out, the views are amazing and there are lots of thoughtful touches (including a story trail and nature scavenger hunt around the site) from James and Pridie who are so friendly and welcoming. It’s easy to get up to the peaks and ridges of the surrounding mountains....where the views are spectacular and the bilberries we foraged were delicious (and got the kids up the hill!) Beautiful & Natural Camping Spot in the Stunning Brecon Beacons

Found this beautiful little retreat in the Brecon Beacons for a last minute getaway after searching for a campervan spot on a dog friendly site. On arrival, we were met by the lovely Pridie who guided our vans through the gates and showed us to our spot. The family dog was gorgeous and got on well with my little puppy. Although we had "neighbours", the pitches were spaced out to give everyone plenty of room and privacy. It is rare to find a Campsite that offers their guests so much space. We also had a fire pit which was a very welcome addition to the pitch. The "Byre" was a cute and cosy little barn which housed a washing up area with a drinking water supply, and a kettle. There was also a large bookshelf with lots of resources on it including a stargazing book (very useful as on a clear night you can see all the stars- we spotted a few shooting stars!). It was nice to have the opportunity to buy small camping supplies if needed. The bathroom was very clean and there was plenty of soap and toilet roll. It was nice to walk around the fields and have a nosey at the glamping tents. They look amazing and the enclosed gardens around them make them extra special. Would definitely book a stay in one in the future. Thank you James & Pridie for a lovely stay. You can tell you have put a lot of love and effort into making the perfect retreat for any family. All the effort has paid off as your Campsite is by far the best I have visited. We will definitely be visiting you again in the future and look forward to seeing you again and seeing the Campsite grow xx
