Simple, eco-friendly camping with epic views at the foot of a famed Welsh mountain range
Cwmffrwd Farm's, Pengenffordd off-grid, pop-up site is a back-to-nature retreat for those looking for simple camping in stunning surroundings. Nestled within 22 acres of wildflower meadows, the spacious pitches for campers and glampers alike make visitors feel like they've found a secret spot in South Wales, tucked away amid towering mountains at the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Exemplified by the site's focus on maintaining the natural biodiversity of their surroundings, hosts James and Pridie are advocates of outdoor life and positive environmental change, with James having worked in the energy and environment sector for over a decade, while Pridie is a qualified teacher and Mountain Leader. As such, the amenities may be basic here, but they're situated in a site owned by people who know a great outdoor spot with a view when they see one.

Its camping pitches are spaciously spread out across its meadows Onnen, Cyll, and Helyg. The latter has a gate that opens out onto the Waun Fach mountain range, with its summit height of 811 metres granting it the highest peak of south-eastern Wales' Black Mountains. Freely select your pitch, plant your tent, and explore your surroundings with minimal fuss. For glamping, choose between the two five-metre bell tents in the small Hafod meadow, or the four-metre bell tent in Aelwyd Field. The five-metre tents have the meadow all to themselves, providing a sprawling view across the valley along with a lovely babbling brook to sit beside. The four-metre tent also gets to keep its field to itself, surrounded with alder, ash, and hazel, and situated right next to the stream.

The secluded nature of Cwmffrwd Farm ensures guests' privacy compared to other, more densely populated sites, along with keeping this beautiful land unspoiled. This is reflected in the simple amenities, with composting loos in the meadows and a washroom and toilet located in the 'The Byre', with hot water and an electric shower. Be sure to say "hello" to the family dog, who loves to greet guests in the barn.

Your mountainous surroundings provide ample opportunities for lengthy rambles and hikes, while guests should ditch their phones (there's no WiFi here, allowing a firm disconnect from modern life) and replace them with books from the site's little outdoor library, which also contains charts to help you identify the resident wildlife. You and the kids can also enjoy Pridie's 'Fairytrails' outdoor storying adventures, immersive nature-based yarns that combine folklore, natural navigation, and your wilderness skills. Suffice to say, you won't forget Cwmffrwd Farm in a hurry.

Behind the washroom is the drinking tap, and there is also a chemical toilet disposal point behind the barns (green eco fluid only).

In the surrounding area, the site resides in the heart of Brecon Beacons National Park, offering scenic walks through the stunning countryside. Also tucked away in this National Park is the Llangorse Multi Activity Centre (01874 658272), an award-winning indoor and outdoor centre with horse riding, an indoor climbing centre, and pony trekking trips. The Owner Says

Named after the stream that tumbles down from the mountain and through twenty two acres of wildflower meadows, Cwmffrwd Farm is an off-grid camping sanctuary. Picture it - the mountains gently stretching before and behind you, the smell of woodsmoke lingering in the air, children weaving their way through the long grass and giggling as they try to catch the crickets...

Preserving a sense of wilderness is at the heart of everything we do, and to protect the natural biodiversity we keep things really traditional and basic. We only open for a set period each year and provide a small number of camping pitches (so space is never an issue!) To minimise impact on the meadows and keep everyone safe, we have a no vehicles policy in the campsite and ask that guests park at the entrance to the field where wheelbarrows are provided for you to move your kit to the pitch you have chosen. As much as possible, we like to give everyone free range when it comes to choosing their pitch in our two camping fields - so have a wander once you are parked and, when you are ready, grab a wheelbarrow and off you go! There is no additional charge for pup tent, gazebo or awning.

Certainly don’t come expecting Wi-Fi. Instead, enjoy rummaging around in the little outdoor library for books and charts to help you identify the resident birds and mini beasts, or go for a paddle in the stream and see if you can spot any creatures in the alder, willow, hazel and hawthorn that thrive across the site.

Along with the seclusion of each individual pitch, the farm feels like it is tucked away too. It’s 12 minutes drive to  picturesque Crickhowell  (and a superb wild swimming spot), and 25 minutes to celebrated book town Hay-on-Wye and bustling market town Brecon. It’s best to stock up on food before you arrive, or shop at local supermarkets in Brecon, Abergavenny or the high street in Crickhowell.

On Pridie's website, you'll also find an 'outdoor storying' Fairytrail experience to add a little bit of extra excitement to your stay. Call up the tree, plant and creature grid when you visit and learn about the folklore and stories connected to the trees, plants and creatures you can encounter on site.

Social Distancing Measures

All our pitches are spaces at a considerable distance from each other, making it easy to socially distance. Hand soap, sanitiser, disinfectant spray and blue roll to wipe the toilet seat etc. are all provided in the campsite washroom. The washroom is very well ventilated.

Hidden gem in an idyllic location

What a beautiful place! Set amongst the rolling mountains and at night beneath the Milky Way, we couldn’t have have asked for a more idyllic place to sleep under the stars. We had an incredible time spending a few nights in the camper, Pridie and James couldn’t have been more helpful and the facilities were perfect. Can’t wait to revisit again soon, thanks for sharing your perfect spot with us!

Comfort, nature, reinvigorating - a treat!

From a spur-of-the-moment booking, after a chance discovery, our young family had an incredible welcome and overnight stay in Bell Tent Number 2. Such a perfect place for rediscovering the wild, safely. Such knowledgeable and friendly hosts. Facilities are appropriately "grass roots" for a meadow campsite, and are still luxurious and impeccably maintained. ...Looking forward to our return trip already!

There is plenty of space between tends what I was impressed with, this is the perfect place to disconnect from the daily life and just enjoy nature and spend time with loved ones. My son didn't stop talking about story telling that Pridie host at the farm for everyone. I would recommend a visit to the Cwmffrwd Farm to all my friends and family. Stunning place

Best camping spot I've been to - lots of neatly arranged space, amazing fire pit for for each space, great view, beautiful mountain hiking paths straight from the camp. Strongly recommend!

Response from Cwmffrwd Farm, Pengenffordd

Thank you so much for taking the time to review the site Kamil - we really appreciate your kind words. It was really lovely to meet you!

Quite literally our best camping experience in forever!

Literally our new favourite campsite in all the UK. WHAT a spot. WHAT hosts. The view from the tent and our campfire - up to the mountains - was utterly incredible - and that was BEFORE the stars all came out (the area is in a zero light pollution zone so the stars are incredible). Being able to walk - with my 8 year old - straight from our tent to the top of Wuan Fach and then back to our campfire was simply perfect. The owners were always on hand to help and provide wood and tips for the walk etc. An absolutely perfect little camping trip and the place is flawless. Loved it.

Wow! We are really touched by your review Alan - and so pleased that you both enjoyed your stay so much! We really hope you visit again soon, it was so lovely to meet you :)

Charming site ,fab setting.

A little gem , off the road from Talgarth to Crickhowell. Huge pitches ( we had a campervan pitch ) in a beautiful mountain environment. Every care is taken to minimise the impact of visitors including a vehicle van to the camping meadows and a composting loo ( wonky bob😁) As night falls you become aware of the 🌟 stars and on the clearest of nights we could clearly see the milky way whilst sat round our log fire 🔥 . Walks from the camp take you directly onto the black mountains and offer wonderful views across the Brecon beacons national park. Hosts are lovely, friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Fantastic getaway

We had a brilliant time at Cwmffrwd Farm. Pridie went above and beyond to make our stay magical, and nothing was too much bother. Highlights for our family included the fantastic views, warm welcome each day and Pridie’s campfire story telling which was brilliant. The bell tents had everything you needed for a comfortable stay, and the toilet facilities were great. Couldn’t recommend highly enough. This campsite is likely to develop and grow over time and we can’t wait to return to see what they have done next!

Response from Cwmffrwd Farm, Pengenffordd

Thank you so much Gemma. It was really lovely to meet you all and to have you around the storytelling campfire under that incredible sky! Brilliant storytelling from the girls as well!  Please do come again! 😊

Beautiful site with the most thoughtful little touches and super friendly hosts

This is where you can really immerse yourself in the beautiful Black Mountains. The site is thoughtfully laid out, the views are amazing and there are lots of thoughtful touches (including a story trail and nature scavenger hunt around the site) from James and Pridie who are so friendly and welcoming. It’s easy to get up to the peaks and ridges of the surrounding mountains....where the views are spectacular and the bilberries we foraged were delicious (and got the kids up the hill!) We will be back! Thanks Pridie and James

Peaceful, beautiful & welcoming

We felt so lucky to find this place! Pridie and James were so welcoming and helpful, the place is beautiful, peaceful and wild - with great facilities. Loved the ethos of the place too with the wild meadows and folklore and simplicity. The bell tent was perfect - all simple details thought of and a really comfy bed! Beautiful & Natural Camping Spot in the Stunning Brecon Beacons

Found this beautiful little retreat in the Brecon Beacons for a last minute getaway after searching for a campervan spot on a dog friendly site. On arrival, we were met by the lovely Pridie who guided our vans through the gates and showed us to our spot. The family dog was gorgeous and got on well with my little puppy. Although we had "neighbours", the pitches were spaced out to give everyone plenty of room and privacy. It is rare to find a Campsite that offers their guests so much space. We also had a fire pit which was a very welcome addition to the pitch. The "Byre" was a cute and cosy little barn which housed a washing up area with a drinking water supply, and a kettle. There was also a large bookshelf with lots of resources on it including a stargazing book (very useful as on a clear night you can see all the stars- we spotted a few shooting stars!). It was nice to have the opportunity to buy small camping supplies if needed. The bathroom was very clean and there was plenty of soap and toilet roll. It was nice to walk around the fields and have a nosey at the glamping tents. They look amazing and the enclosed gardens around them make them extra special. Would definitely book a stay in one in the future. Thank you James & Pridie for a lovely stay. You can tell you have put a lot of love and effort into making the perfect retreat for any family. All the effort has paid off as your Campsite is by far the best I have visited. We will definitely be visiting you again in the future and look forward to seeing you again and seeing the Campsite grow xx

Response from Cwmffrwd Farm, Pengenffordd
