A welcome like no other, in beautiful surroundings, with a surplus of things to do

Life’s a contrary beast isn’t it? And camping at Grawen demonstrates this perfectly. When you find a place so well matched to that camping idyll we all seek – wonderful location, good facilities, a friendly welcome, a relaxing atmosphere – the last thing you want is to spend your time dashing here, there and everywhere doing other things.

Places like this deserve better than being used solely for getting your head down after yet another exhausting day out doing all manner of outdoor things, and attempting to see all the sights with which the Brecon Beacons snares the unwary visitor. No, holidays are for relaxing and time at Grawen should be taken for getting a chair out and admiring the view, strolling around the farm of old stone buildings – and most of all – having an unhurried chat with the other campers.

Grawen is situated at the foot of the southern ridges of the Brecon Beacons’ highest hills and some of the most appealing walking country in the land, but even this pales into insignificance once you’ve run your eyes over the bumpy, hollowy limestone landscape immediately to the west. These valleys, through which flow the Afons (Rivers) Nedd Fechan, Mellte and Hepste, enclose a series of really quite startling gorges, filled with the sound of the rushing rivers and the sight of beautiful shimmering curtains of falling water.

The best way of seeing the falls is to take them all in on one long day. You start from Pontneddfechan and take a circular walk up the Nedd Fechan to Pont Melin Fach, across to the Mellte, then downstream in this steep dramatic gorge, before clambering up and over to the Hepste Valley. This will be one of those days that will live forever in your personal folklore, such are the scenes you’ll have seen and the emotions they provoke.

Basic fitness is a must and those with severe vertigo problems may have the odd wobbly moment. It’s certainly a hard walk, but nowhere is a bit of suffering more worthwhile than here.

After that you can then get started on the Brecon Beacons, the Brecon Mountain Railway, The Big Pit National Mining Museum and the glory of the Black Mountain, which, all in all, leaves absolutely no time for chewing the cud on this small friendly and welcoming campsite.

A shame – what’s Welsh for c’est la vie.

Good facilities, including hot and cold water, flush toilets, free showers, laundry, dishwashing; a small children’s playground in the camping field.

Food & Drink

Nant Ddu Lodge Hotel (01685 379111), 3 miles towards Brecon, has an excellent restaurant. For a quick bite at lunchtime, the Garwnant Visitor Centre, 2 miles towards Brecon, has a nice café and plenty of walking ideas near by to work off lunch.

Farm feeling campsite

I really liked this campsite for it's farm vibe and very tame chickens walking around. It's a friendly campsite, with beautiful scenery. Great for walkers and cyclists, well located to a lot of hikes and bike park wales or afan. My only reason for not giving it 5 star is because you can hear the road in the day, but it is quiet at night and the only other thing is, where the very best campsites manage to have just the type of people that like camping/walking etc, this did have a bit of groups with music playing, although all went quiet at the curfew time and there are quite a few signs up impressing that it's not a late music site, but a family focused site.

Beautiful Site

My partner and I recently spent the weekend camping on this beautiful site. The lady that welcomed us was both lovely and ever so helpful. The facilities are well maintained and the surroundings are stunning.

Bob is lovley

A great camping and caravan park. The owner is a very kindly lady. My special friend was her bordercolly named Bob. We spend four nice days there. This camping park is for everyone who look for a beautiful place to walk, or only relax

Great site

Great little campsite with a very friendly and helpful owner. Probably the nearest campsite to the newly-opened BikePark Wales mountain biking centre, just down the A470 in Gethin Woods.

There are 2 slight negatives with the site: 1) It's almost alongside the A470, so there is traffic noise, and 2) we were besieged by clouds of midges first thing in the morning, and again at dusk. I know nothing about the life-cycle of midges so can't claim this would happen outside of the time we were there.

It was £16/night for car, tent + 2 people in Aug 2013, which is pretty good value for money. The site facilities are perfectly adequate. The views are superb. There's a wonderful, peaceful reservoir just a couple of minutes away, and some energetic walking close by.

Grawen Caravan and Camping Park

At the recommendation of a friend, I stayed here for a couple of nights and used the site as a base for some lovely walking in the area. The Taff Trail is nearby and a good walk of about 8 miles or so is Pen y Fan (or a ten-minute drive from the campsite) and this mountain is well worth climbing as it's not too heavy-going and possible for a range of fitness levels.

The welcome is wonderful here and the site, even though it was August bank holiday, was quite quiet. There are great toilet, laundry and shower facilities and there are some areas of trimmed grass to pitch. Most people seemed to have pitched quite close to each other in this shorter grass, although heading to the larger paddock is definitely recommended as you get much more space and seclusion. The main paddock does contain some slopes so it's not possible to camp everywhere (unless you're ok with camping at an angle) so I guess that's the main reason people stick to the trimmed areas - although it's much more natural-feeling in the main paddock.

With trees on one side and beautiful hills on the other, it's a lovely site indeed and I'll definitely be back!

Grawen Caravan and Camping Park

This is not a review as such but an observation!!! Merthyr Tydfil is at the top of the Northern Welsh Valley’s and is not in Vale of Glamorgan. Vale of Glamorgan is on the southern coast line of south Wales.
