Tranquil, adults-only camping in the Brecon Beacons with immediate access to the surrounding hills

The adults-only policy isn’t really what makes Cuckoo Camping so tranquil. It’s certainly true that restricting visitors to age 25 and older ensures the noise levels are kept low. But there’s something far greater that provides the real assurance of a mellow ambience – the location.

Cuckoo Camping is a Brecon Beacons hideout like no other. Small, secluded and restricted to just 15 campfire-friendly, tent-only pitches, the owners have kept the meadow to a manageable and sociable scale. The space itself is open but shielded on all sides by bushy hedgerows that provide shelter from the wind, while a small pond helps attract extra wildlife throughout the year. To the west, great hills climb away from the campsite, creased by the gentle wear of rivers and streams that have wound their way through the landscape for centuries. All are easily accessible via footpaths that run immediately past the campsite – the great walks of the Brecon Beacons National Park are right there on your doorstep.

The size of the campsite suits the ‘rustic’ style of the facilities. A small static caravan houses a camp kitchen with washing up sinks, a fridge, freezer, kettle, toaster and microwave, plus an indoor seating area for rainy days. The plywood-clad interior gives away its homemade nature, with the chipboard continued in the newly built shower area next door. Simple but effective, it acts as a central spot for organising yourself for the day ahead, wherever you choose to go.

A particular highlight – and one that is well connected with the campsite – is the nearby Red Kite Feeding Centre in Llanddeusant. Cuckoo Camping is owned by the very same people, hence the campsite’s keen-ness to keep things quiet and nature friendly. Opened in 2002, the eco-friendly centre provides bird lovers the ideal opportunity to witness Red Kites, Buzzards and other birds of prey feeding. Head along (its just a short drive from the campsite) and watch from the specially built hide as the birds compete for the meat provided. Most days, over 50 birds gather for the event and the hide is just feet away from where they swoop, soar and dive on the food.

This is a small campsite and has 2 showers, 2 toilets and 2 washing up sinks. There is a small pond and plenty of wildlife – birds, bats and dragon flies aplenty. Loud noise, ball games not permitted. Campfires and firepits are allowed.

Suitable For

Tents, adults (over 25 years), dogs – yes. Campervans, caravans, children, groups, noisy folks – no.

It's a 15 minute drive to the Red Kite Feeding Centre (01550 740617) at Llanddeusant. The observation hide there has been specially built to blend in with the scenery and the birds of prey are unfazed as they dive on the meat provided just a few feet from the hut. Sit inside and watch – £4 adults, £2 children (under 16). Though there are other nearby attractions, including Carreg Cennen Castle (01558 822291) and Dan yr Ogof (01639 730284) – Northern Europe's largest showcave complex – many people come here simply for access to the surrounding Brecon Beacons National Park. Footpaths pass directly past the campsite and there are also several popular mountain biking routes.

Food & Drink

Free range eggs and homemade jam are provided by the neighbour – they're delicious. There aren't any pubs within walking range but head into Llangadog for an excellent meal at the Goose and Cuckoo.

Small, quiet-all you need camping experience

Really beautiful and quiet place. Great welcoming and helpful owners. Thank you so much!

Peaceful stay

Just got back from a peaceful stay at cuckoo. We were luck to get the pitch next to the pond so we fell asleep each night listening to the river. A visit to the red kite feeding centre is a must!

Such a lovely campsite

The campsite is in a great spot near the river and with view of the mountains, has facilities even a kitchen you can use, very clean overall. The people who run the place are very kind and helped us with everything we needed. Highly recommended.

Quiet campsite with great views

Cuckoo Campings hosts were welcoming and friendly and the site itself was very peaceful. There was plenty of room to pitch our tent and the views from the campsite were lovely. Facilities were basic but plentiful. Would visit again.

Peace & Quiet

Just spent six nights at Cuckoo Camping. Arrived to a warm welcome & shown around the site & facilities. The facilities are basic, but functional, hot showers on demand & proper toilets. A fridge to store milk, etc. The views from the site are stunning of the nearby mountains. When the sky is clear at night, the view of the stars in amazing. A very peaceful site, fell asleep several times to the sound of an Owl. Will hopefully be back soon.

Brilliant brilliant peace within peace

I love the spiritual feel that cuckoo camping give peaceful blessed

Small site with basic facilities

Very small campsite on a small and very quiet road. Most of the pitches are on a lite slope, I got the flat one next to the carpark. This pitch was quite sheltered for the heavy wind and rain. The facilities are quite basic and old. The toilet/shower is low and not very hygienic with carpet on the floor and wooden walls. But it was clean enough. Kitchen is complete. Manager is friendly. It's next to a small river, but unfortunately you can't get to it. There's a short path into the woods.

fine location, relaxed atmosphere, good facilities and welcoming owners

Small, quiet, dog friendly site comprising a wildlife meadow and pond with mown pitches each with a fire place. Facilities are good and the owners were helpful and welcoming. A good base for exploring the western end of the brecon beacons national park.

Peace & quiet!

Lovely setting nestled in the hills down a quiet lane with good views. Like that the grass is kept longer in the middle of the fields which attracts butterflies & wildlife. Was very peaceful when we were there with only one other set of campers. Facilities are basic & a bit dilapidated but adequate and always hot water. Useful to have a fridge. Would stay again.

A Perfect Pitch!

Cuckoo Camping is everything we want in a campsite. Previous reviews describe this site perfectly. We particularly liked the way the owners now leave as much of the grass unmowed as possible so as to encourage wildlife. It also serves to provide an element of privacy between the pitches. Well done Cuckoo, please don’t change a thing.

Easy, fun and quiet camping

We had a couple of nights here and loved the serenity of the place. It was also near to the red kite centre and many lovely walks. Recommended it:-)

Fantastically quiet and peaceful

A great place if peace is your thing. I was there by myself for 4 nights, utter quiet apart from nature and the very occasional passing vehicle. Great basic facilities, everything you need for a back to basics camp site. Would love to go back again but unfortunately they are closing and I had the honour of being their last guest. A real shame as sites like this are hard to come by.

Response from Cuckoo Camping

Hi, glad you enjoyed your stay . We look forward to having you back anytime as we are still open for business and we look forward to meeting many new campers over the summer .

Idyllic campsite...

We like to stay in adult only campsites....we like set pitches to avoid overcrowding...we like friendly hosts....well maintained pitches....Cuckoo Camping had all this. We loved the layout with the neatly cut grass marking the pitches with the bonus fire pit for each pitch. The site was perfectly located for peace and quiet although we heard the odd red kite...we didn't mind. Unfortunately we had some torrential rain during our short problem we could cook in the camp kitchen or under the outdoor shelter. The camp kitchen was clean and tidy and a nice bonus to have. There are only two shower/toilet cubicles and two sinks but this was not a problem on the small site - again, everything is clean and tidy. We will definitely be back again!

Peaceful and well maintained this is a well run site with a handy porta cabin with a microwave and kettle, which was very convenient after this weekends wind and rain, you can get pans to go onto the cooking fires which are based at every plot which are well spaced to give you a feeling that you could be alone. There are mowed paths through the longer meadow grass that separates the plots which are also great running tracks for whippets. Even though when we went the weather was terrible, we will defiantly return and look forward to laying out to look at the stars in this dark sky area.

Quiet, peaceful, beautiful... Perfect

We were only able to stay the one night at Cuckoo Camping, but could have stayed forever! The site itself is beautiful and in a wonderful location with views over the Brecon Beacon mountains. You really feel at one with nature there. The owners have set up the site to enhance all of this, by only allowing adults, having no groups, and keeping things small and well spaced out. The owners were very welcoming and thoughtful. One example was that they have a whole load of saucepans for campers to use when cooking on an open fire (each pitch has it's own fire pit and logs are available to purchase), so that your cookware isn't damaged or destroyed! It's a simple site, but all of the facilities one would need are there, which is a real winning combination. It's the perfect place to enjoy the night sky; the Brecon Beacons being only one of a handful of places on the planet that has International Dark Sky Reserve status. If peacefulness, quite and nature are what you are looking for, this is the campsite for you...

Beautiful setting and blissfully quiet. We heard nothing but birdsong and sheep, plus the occasional tractor in the distance. Friendly hosts who give you a warm welcome but then leave you alone. Really liked the fire-pits on each pitch, and the thoughtful camp kitchen where you could make use of fridge, freezer, kettle, microwave etc, plus pots and pans that could be used to cook on the fire-pits. Showeres were hot but are looking a little tired.

Beautiful views. Extremely quiet. Wonderful owners who even showed us the bats around their home. One of the best campsites we have ever stayed at! Dogs loved it and were able to run around the field as it quiet when we stayed. Can’t wait to go back! Definitely recommend.

Peaceful and relaxing

My husband and I stayed with Cuckoo Camping for 2 nights earlier this month. We were the only ones there for the first night and just a lone cyclist the second so it was incredibly peaceful! It set in beautiful surroundings with bird song and the sound of the river running by. As a bird watcher, I was very pleased to see lots of birds I haven’t seen before just within the campsite grounds! The kitchen area was a great bonus with a fridge, freezer, kettle, microwave and toaster! Would also recommend the red kite feeding centre owned by the same people - a fantastic experience! We will definitely return if in the area!

Quiet and Friendly

I stayed for two nights at the end of April 2018. The campsite is well laid out and I think the amenities are much better than most campsites I have visited in the UK. Having the small kitchen with amenities is a big plus and means that you can leave much of your cooking equipment at home if you wish. This is one of the few campsites that is well set up for having campfires and I don't understand why more sites in the UK don't do this. 5/5 Will be returning when the weather is warmer.

Fantastic and Relaxing

Simply excellent site, peaceful and relaxing and very intune with its surroundings..Such a nice feeling being able to relax by a crackling fire pit and listen to the sound of nature and watch the stars go by. The site was not crowded on our visit but you could tell even when full each pitch offers its own world of solitude. Owners were brilliant, showers and well stocked camp kitchen and unexpected and much appreciated bonus. Definitely a place to go to escape the run of the mill campsites and be with nature. Absolutely loved it.

Fantastic site

We stayed here over the bank holiday weekend. Absolute gem of a site, so peaceful and relaxing, no noise at night - you could hear the stream, birds and people quietly chatting by their firepits. The site has large pitches marked out so plenty of space and not crowded at all. The owners were very friendly and helpful. Lovely area, lots of walking and gorgeous scenery to drive through. We went to the red kite feeding station, well worth a visit. Absolutely incredible to see such amazing birds so close up! Very much looking forward to returning to this site, will make sure we book in as I can see this place being booked up well in advance!

Peaceful, welcoming and dog friendly!

Really great location tucked away in the Brecon Beacons, you really feel like you've escaped the hustle and bustle and entered the tranquility of the countryside. The owners are friendly and welcoming, and there's a really relaxed atmosphere to the site. Our dog was welcome (as long as he behaved himself!) and the other campers (and dogs) were quiet and friendly - it's the kind of place people come for some peace and quiet so the policy of no kids or large groups was extremely welcome! Warm showers and a cosy kitchen area made our stay a comfortable one, and the location was perfect for long walks into the surrounding countryside. I would definitely recommend Cuckoo Camping if you want a quiet get-away in a friendly campsite with considerate campers and no screaming kids, loud music and rowdy groups. We will definitely return!

Wish we could've stayed longer!

Every part of the stay was faultless. Lovely friendly owners, so helpful and approachable. Quiet peaceful setting with gorgeous surrounding views. Not a peep from other campers. Only sounds were the hushed roar of a river down in the lower valley, punctuated by a few bird and animal calls. The facilities ideal to make the stay homely and comfortable. Took advantage of the fire pit and cooked in the open air. Site was a good launching off point for all sorts of attractions in the Brecons. We would love to go back and wish we could've stayed longer. Fantastic place :)

What a Gem!

The first thing that attracted us to this site was the rules! We’ve had some rather uncomfortable camping experiences in the past – rowdy groups, loud music and uncontrolled, screeching children! And if that’s what you want then fine, but then this isn’t the site for you. If however, you’re looking for peace and tranquillity in a beautiful setting with considerate co-campers and friendly, informative hosts then look no further. Cuckoo camping is a gem. It is clear the owners value their surroundings and intend the site to blend in, with small patches of wild flower meadow adorning the pitches and hedgerows. The kitchen area is very cosy and welcoming and the toilet/shower block, whilst small, is perfectly adequate. Other reviews here more than adequately relay our feelings and experience but we would like to add that, in our opinion, it’s the strict adherence to the rules that makes Cuckoo Camping such a joyous experience. We really didn’t want to leave and will most certainly be back :-)

Highly Recommended

Lovely quiet site in the middle of beautiful countryside. Perfect for putting your feet up and relaxing or for exploring everything the Beacons has to offer. The site is not large and there are designated pitches giving plenty of space, so it is very unlikely to be overcrowded. Kitchen facilities are available for washing up, and the microwave is a nice option to have. Each pitch has its own fire pit, which always makes camping more enjoyable. The owners are very accommodating and willing to help with local knowledge. A visit to the red kite feeding centre is definitely recommended also.

Hard to beat

Almost impossible to fault this place. The setting is beautiful, with great views of the Black Mountain in one direction and a gorgeous forested valley in the other. It feels truly remote. The hosts are lovely - friendly and helpful without being overbearing. The pitches are generous in size and all have their own fire pit. Facilities are very good too, with nice warm showers and a fantastic kitchen area which is fantastic for sitting in side with a cuppa and a good beak if the rain comes in. All in all, a superb place to get away from it all and explore the beautiful surrounding countryside. Definitely worth visiting the owner's Red Kite feeding station while you're there too...if you're patient enough to wait for the birds to appear, you're in for a treat.

Wonderful relaxing campsite!

Absolutely amazing place to stay! Incredibly friendly and helpful campsite owners, providing you with a kettle, tea and coffee (with honesty box) adds such a welcoming touch to your stay! We were lucky enough to pitch up right in front of the pond where you can sit and watch the pond life whilst listening to the gentle trickle of the stream below....absolutely perfect! The facilities at this campsite are also very good, including hot water in the sinks for washing your hands and washing up! Looking forward to our next visit already.

Absolutely amazing place!

What a little gem of a site! The only negative to get out of the way first, is that you won't want to leave!!!! Every pitch has a firepit & I was lucky enough to pitch next to the pond which had a pinic table & is almost a private little pitch away from the main field. The pond was full of wildlife & very much enjoyed breakfast watching the dragonflies dance with each other! The facilities are fantastic in terms of what's on offer. There is a fridge, freezer, microwave & kettle in the camp kitchen with large pans for use when cooking on the firepit itself. There is even a socket for people to charge phones & unbelievably wifi!!!! There were cups, tea, coffee & sugar available to use freely. There are plastic chairs for use if camping light & a cute little covered outdoor area attached the kitchen/toilet block for use when it's raining, again with a firepit! There's an "honesty box" on the wall for anything you use which I found very sweet. Being adults only means that you go to sleep & wake up in peace, quiet & the odd animal in the distance, absolute bliss! Lastly & by no means least are the wonderful owners! From the time I booked the service was fantastic & they're such a lovely couple, very knowledgeable about the area & in particular the red kites that were around as they actually run feeding sessions with the kites. They really are the most welcoming people & made my stay all that more brilliant! I can't wait to go back & in particular join in on one their red kite feeding sessions! A fab site run by fab people :-)

The Perfect Location for Peace & Quiet

If you're looking for the perfect setting, located in wonderful countryside with the sound of a mountain stream, peace and quiet and no children, this campsite is hard to beat. There's plenty of space, no cars, great fire pits and piping hot showers and kitchen, its a little bit of paradise. We thoroughly enjoyed our few days and will definitely be returning. Thanks Pete and see you again soon.
