Faerie Thyme The Greener Camping Club
The Faerie Thyme founders had just two wishes: one was to create a campsite that they would like to go back to. And the other Wish is one of the founders...
The former Brighton-based interior designer with his wife, Irene, transported themselves to this three acre smallholding (an overgrown goat farm) in Crwbin nearly a decade ago. Then began years of sweat, toil and trouble to materialise a magical realm where imagination rules and – although children aren’t allowed – everyone is encouraged to nurture their inner child. Have you walked the plank aboard the Jolly Roger recently? No, we didn’t think so.
Fun and games aside, Faerie Thyme is like the best part of any decent festival’s green fields – there’s space to chill by giant dream catchers, an area to meditate by the stone circle or you can get lost in a deep and meaningful conversation around one of the site's many fire pits. And like Glastonbury, leylines snake back to a wizard heritage. The old quarry road where druids would get their stones for nearby circles and monuments placed around Myndd Llangyndeyrn, leading into Camarthen, is rumoured to be the birthplace of Merlin.
If this all feels a bit “far out” then bear this in mind; Irene and Wish received a 'member's recommended best site' award in 2011 by the UK Camping and Caravanning Club, apparently only the second time it was awarded to somewhere in Wales. This is proof that this place unique and idiosyncratic yet accessible and well considered. And although your hosts are hands on, they’re also so open and friendly that it’s impossible for anyone not to slip under their spell.
Campfires allowed in firepits and plenty of quiet places to chill. There are 6 electric hook ups and Katie the Caravan for those who want a comfortable and kitsch stay. There is a wet room with hot showers and the toilets are flushing loos built by Wish. A separate washroom for ladies is also provided. There is a washing-up area with hot water, plus a fridge freezer for guests to use. The onsite honesty shop includes logs, kindling and Irene’s handcrafted momentoes. There is also a microwave and phone-charging point here.
Suitable ForTents and campervans – yes. Anyone under the age of 23, dogs, big groups – no. Group bookings only (min 15 people required). This is an adult-only campsite
You’d be daft not to visit the ancient Myndd Llangyndeyrn standing stones – a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) which attracts an abundance of rare birds and uncommon invertebrates. More natural kicks await at the magnicent gardens and stately house at Aberglasney (01558 668998). You’re also well located to access Pembrokeshire, Mid Wales or the Brecon Beacons.
Food & Drink
Plans are afoot to start doing home cooked meals such as chillis and curries which can easily be reheated over the fire (all pots and ladles supplied). Eggs, bacon and sausages are all locally supplied in the honesty shop and Rob the baker delivers bread once a week. Carmarthen Market (01267 228841) sells local cheeses and Carmarthen ham – a serious local rival to the Parma variety. For pubs in Pontyberem ,The New Inn (01269 871152) has good pub food and a wide range of ales and The Smiths Arms (01269 842213) also has tasty pub grub. The Farmers Arms (01269 871022) in neighbouring Llangyndeyrn is a traditional local pub serving evening snacks.

Planning our wedding party
The best campsite we have ever stayed at!
Flawed but decent
Arrived to find a small building site going on. I suppose it was tail end of the season but it was a little off putting. Shown where our pitch was. The Pitch was nice and neat. Washing up facilities good, well lit and accessible. The Fridge/Freezer and freezer packs were a nice touch. The toilets were a little cramped and not accessible, clean however. Anyone who's not capable of climbing a short staircase need not come to this site. And only two loos for the entire site...good job it wasn't anywhere near full occupancy.
Again it was tail end of the season but the ground was very wet and even the slightest drop of rain turned the place into a Glastonbury style mud fest. A few field drains would not go amiss!
A lot of other reviews go on about the peace and rural, almost wild nature of this site. Sorry, cant see it myself. Street lights, traffic noise really rather suburban in character. A neat suburban style site complete with notices to clean up after yourself, no driving on the grass and many other regulations. Enjoyable in its own way but not as advertised. Very much felt we were camping in someone's back garden. And not entirely welcome there either.
The honesty store and showers were great.
So all in all a mixed bag. I wont be coming back but it wasn't an unpleasant stay.
Response from Faerie Thyme
Thanks for your mixed review. I’m sorry you didn’t totally enjoy your stay with us but I would like to take this opportunity to comment on the points that you raised. We are in the middle of a building project but it is not on the camping field and has nothing to do with the camping facility and no building work was going on while you were here. Faerie-thyme is continually being improved, and we are doing this for the comfort and enjoyment of our guests. Most of the building work goes on in the closed season so as not to disturb our guests. We do not have disabled access loos and we do not state anywhere that our loos are accessible to disabled users. They are a normal size, not small, and the ladies has a private wash room as well, the mens has a cubicle and a urinal. The loo block is up a couple of steps with handrails and non slip maps to assist. There was no Glastonbury style mud fest. It had been raining before you arrived but we cannot help the weather, so the field was wet but not muddy. Our camping field is maintained to a very high standard and we spend many hours looking after the camping field and the woodland that surrounds the site. We are obliged as a certified location to have notices up to assist our guests in knowing where the water taps are and where and how to dispose of their rubbish. We are trying to be as ecologically sound as possible so explaining to people about the recycling helps us achieve that. There are NO street lights visible from the camping field, although there are solar fairy lights all around the field, we are well away from a B road with no ‘suburban’ road noise, just the odd tractor and farm machinery. We live on the edge of a very small village in a very rural location. We all work very hard to take care of our guests and we are sorry that you didn’t see how much we do do to make your holiday an enjoyable one.
Fabulous stay, planning a return!
Amazing few days of peace and tranquility
2 weeks of BLISS
Peaceful . Friendly .
Peaceful, picturesque & relaxing
Peace, calm, and serene
Never wanted to leave!!!
We stayed here from Friday to Monday and enjoyed every minute. From the large spacious tent pitches with undercover open fire to the peaceful surroundings. Great as a base for exploring local castles and towns. Wish was very welcoming with his tour of the site. We will definitely be back and can't recommend this site highly enough!
Spent a weekend relaxing in the atmosphere. It is peaceful, calming and friendly.
Myself and my partner stayed Friday to Sunday at faerie thyme... And what an impact it had from the second we arrived! A warm welcome from the owners, a quirky and clearly very creative lovely couple... (Just our type!) they introduced us to the animals who during our stay ventured up to say hello at times! We were shown around camp, and had our things brought up to the pitch for us. The gentle, peaceful vibe at faerie thyme is honestly second to none. From the plants and trees dotted around, woodland sculptures, swings amongst the trees, an enormous beautiful dream catcher hung in a wood clearing, peace circle and individual, private, hidden pitches... There's nothing else we could have wanted. Our pitch up in the ashes was just perfect. Right out of the way it felt magical. Will be returning soon absolutely and will recommend heavily! Thank you for a fantastic stay!
The perfect journey's end!
After travelling all the way from Co. Durham and driving the length of beautiful Wales we were met by Wish and Irene and instantly felt at home. Wish took us up to Katie in his little buggy and we were delighted with our home for the next week. Everything was there that we needed and the weather was perfect. What a fabulous campsite this is! Pitches are tucked away and not overlooked. Shower is lovely and hot but not to be confused with the log store! Wish advised us of places to visit and we found the most fabulous stretch of golden sand. Chilled out and relaxing holiday, would definitely recommend and we will be back. We had a hoot!
La La Land !!!
We have stayed at faerie thyme four times over the last 20 months, the fourth being two weeks ago. It is a three-hour drive but in 35 years of camping nowhere matches this!
Wish & Irene and their daughter Caz are totally enchanting ! lovely warm "unique" fun people! .Nothing was to much trouble to ensure we had a great stay and a totally peaceful chilled time.Once settled in there was no need to get in our car to go anywhere . The site is beautifully set out with everyone having their own woodland area. There are cozy pitches under the trees and I would love to stay in Rosie caravan somewhen. We always have a pitch with a fire pit and there is a big rack of pots and pans you can use. The shower is great and there's a separate flushing loo and washroom ( i did like Wishes Eco loos) Wish & Irene have thought of everything , in the short time we have been visiting they just keep adding little extras . We always stock up from the honesty shop as they have just about everything you need. Irene's home made jams and chutneys are a must and a "fairy" related item to take home. Swing in the hanging chairs and look over this magical land across to the stone circle above the willow arch pathway. Dream catchers , a dragon , a huge dragon fly, twinkling night lights and a pirate ship. Mystical woodland walks took us up over the hill where we looked out over miles of patch work fields and far out to sea. You feel you are staying in a story book ! The first time I left faerie thyme I confess I cried . I blame the fairies !!!! ..we are going back again later this year.
Best site ever
We stayed here for a long weekend over the Bank holiday. Cannot explain enough how fantastic this place is. The pitches are very well thought out and it is as close to wild camping as you can get, whilst still having the luxury of a hot shower in the morning. (Which is not a button press shower so you can wash your hair without having to try and find the button half way through the rinse!)
Wish and Irene are incredible hosts and couldn't be more lovely and helpful. You can tell they have put a lot of thought and effort into how the site will work for their guests. The covered fire pits are incredibly and the small details like putting a guttering system on them to stop the rain from pouring down the sides onto your tent is testament to how close an eye for detail they have.
The honesty shop is well stocked with essentials, including local bacon and eggs from the chicken they have on site. Nothing beats a bacon roll in the morning. There are great walks straight from the site, stunning views, beautiful woodlands and the local amenities mean you really don't need to get in your car again once you have parked up.
The most amazing part about this weekend is coming away feeling like part of a family. Wish and Irene really are the most incredible people and their hard work sees people returning time and time again to their site. We will be going back as often and as soon as possible.
My husband and stayed for our 10th Wedding Anniversary and my big 50th, 19th May for four nights. After a long journey we were greeted by Wish and Irene and felt very at home. The plot had electric hook up and a covered area with its own fire pit and as we were in a Campervan it was ideal for our needs, we cooked outside every night even in the wet weather and being able to sit by an open fire made our Special day more special. There is a good supply of Logs and Kindling which are readily available from the honesty shop, which itself is well stocked with the basic provisions and gifts and nic nacs. Irene and Wish even have provided a selection of pots and pans to be used on the outdoor fire pits The site feels like it's in the middle of nowhere but there is Morrisons Supermarket within approx a 10 minute drive however you can purchase Irene's own hen's eggs and Bacon and Sausage from their little on site shop. It was a truly magical experience, you have to visit to fully appreciate all the hard work that this wonderful family have done to provide an amazing relaxing site. We will definitely be back, the 5 hour drive is worth it .
Our group of friends camp together every year and Faerie Thyme just hit the top spot. Irene and Wish were the perfect hosts and it's hard to put into words why this place is so relaxing, and so perfect but it is. The big plus for us was the covered fire pit area, perfect for evenings if it's cold - we didn't layer up nearly as much as we normally have to! But it's also great for food prep and just being able to leave your stuff in rather than loading up your tent, and it just doesn't get any better than cooking over a fire! The site itself is beautiful, and they have taken such a lot of care over the pitches and the surrounding areas to wander round but not in a manicured and formal way, just in a way that doesn't let you forget that you are in the middle of beautiful countryside everywhere you look!
Just got back from a long weekend at Faerie Thyme and had an amazing time! My friend and I got exactly what we wanted - a weekend of complete relaxation. The owners have literally thought of everything you might need in the honesty shop and were always on hand - they even directed us to local hardly known beauty spot for an afternoon wander. Will definitely be going back soon!
This place is amazing, me and the Wife are both busy scout leaders and after a mad busy summer term of scouting. This is where we love to go and chill out and recharge the batteries, the whole feel of this place is perfect. We parked the car up and disappeared into this magical place for a few days and forgot about the outside world. We can't wait to return..
Chilled and amazing!
I camped for 6 nights here and it was lovely. A great small site with most pitches having a covered fire pit (great in Wales where you can't guarantee the weather!). It was quiet whilst I was there but the facilities were spotless and I never had to wait for the loo or shower, which is hot and powerful. All of the pitches are well maintained with plenty of space and separated from each other. The little shop is well stocked and theres a larger shop just down the road/hill. With firewood and kindling available it was great to pitch the tent and get the fire roaring immediately. The owners were really friendly but, once they drove my stuff up to the pitch, they left us to it unless you wanted to chat. The whole area feels wonderfully remote but with all the facilities you need and loads to do all around. I'm not sure I'm doing it justice here, so all I can say is that I'll be back! Thank you so much Faeirie Thyme
Peace and quiet
We love small campsites with not many people so was great to find this well-kept and loved campsite. The pitches are generous in size and if you get one with a firepit, feels very luxurious, especially as it provided shelter from the rain. All facilities provided with the possibility of buying food as well as anything that you've forgotten to bring with you, including pans that you can borrow to use for cooking directly on the fire.
There's only one shower, male and female toilet and washing up station, so if the campsite is full then this may be a bit inconvenient.
In general, a very well thought-out and equipped campsite, very peaceful and relaxing. Hope to come again soon...with a bit more sunshine!
My husband and I have just returned from 4 nights stay in one of Faerie Thymes caravans. We had a lovely, relaxing and peaceful few days. It was just what we needed. Wish, Irene and Cas were so welcoming and helpful with tips on where to visit as well as useful things we needed. The site is small with room for a few tents, campers and two of their own retro caravans. The stone circle and dream catcher emphasise some of the magic of the space, as does the woodland around, the best starry skies you will see, complete with shooting stars if you are lucky like we were. There is only one shower but as the site is small it wasn't a problem and its always hot. It may need another shower and maybe two more loos in the future but they are developing the site all the time with new ideas. The shop is great with lovely fresh eggs from their own hens and lots more. One of the best bits for us was the covered area with fire pit, we bought logs and sat for hours by the fire even when it rained. It was so nice to meet such lovely people and we plan to return and see them again next summer.
Delightful and effortless!
My young lady and I stayed in Katie for 2 nights at the beginning of July. We had a new van and we didnt have time to set it up for camping. We didn't need to!
Katie is beautifully appointed in every detail.
Everything has been built and finished superbly.
The shop is worth visiting for all those essentials you've forgotten and need.
The shelters over the fire pits are such a great idea, especially in wales! If you love cooking on an open fire you will be landed here. Apart from making coffee in the morning on the stove we cooked everything on the fire.
We had a peaceful time in an amazing place.
This in not a campsite it is a slice of heaven.
Peaceful, relaxing retreat
We stayed here for 7 nights, 6 in the woodlands and 1 in Rosie the caravan, the site is immaculately kept and the owners are very friendly and accommodating. We would highly recommend this campsite and look forward to staying here again.
My girlfriend and I stayed at Faerie Thyme a few weeks ago and we were both very impressed with the site, and the owners. We received a very warm welcome from Irene, and Wish drove us, and our gear, to our pitch. There was ample space and the covered fire pit was great, allowing us to eat and drink outside, with a fire, whatever the weather. The shower and flushing toilets were sufficient and we never had to queue. Faerie Thyme is a lovely site with charm and character, and the attention to detail by the owners makes it a winner.
A little piece of heaven
Faerie Thyme - Total relaxation
Faerie thyme is a haven of tranquility set in the stunning Welsh countryside. Our pitch had a lovely fire pit, great for cooking over and just sitting beside and chilling. The stone circle and nearby dream catcher are wonderful for meditation and the view of the stars on a clear night is breathtaking. The site has everything you need from hot showers to a well stocked honesty shop. The owners are really friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable about the area. Cannot wait to return. Thank you Wish, Irene and Caz for creating this incredible place and sharing it with us.
Words cannot do this place justice
We have stayed here numerous times and we have to say that it is one of the most peaceful, relaxing, friendly campsites we have ever had the privilege to visit. A warm welcome from the owners, oozing relaxation from the moment you enter the gates, all of your troubles just flitter away in this beautifully maintained site, with plenty of privacy if you desire, an honesty shop for all your needs, fire pits for cooking and marshmallows, no kids kicking their ball at your tent, walks in the country, hills and forest, 20mins from the sea and the perfect place for stargazing. For those wanting to get out of the fast pace of modern life, have a romantic break, spend some quiet reflection time or if you are simply wanting to meet new, similar minded people, Faerie Thyme is the place for you. Enjoy...
We had a perfect bank holiday weekend here is August. Great site and lovely people. Thank you x
can't wait to return
Surrounded by greenery and quiet. An eco-conscious campsite, very welcoming hosts and lovely private camping plots, with fire-pits, tables and cover from the rain (not that we had any). Our only regret was that we were only staying for one night (we've already planned a return trip). Highly recommend to those wanting a relaxing retreat.
Leanne & Henry
Had a wonderful few days in this magical campsite. So peaceful and a truly tranquil place. We loved Rosie the caravan, couldn't believe how comfortable the bed was and that saying something when one of us is 6' 6". The fire pit and cover outside made for fantastic outside dining no matter what the weather. Wish and Irene were great hosts and work so hard to make this place as special as it is. Loads to do and see in the area, some magnificent beaches and castles! We will definitely return and recommend to anyone wanting to get away from it all.
Faerie Thyme is a hidden gem of a site. Each pitch is bordered by trees and wildflowers and the whole area has a magical quality, from the stone circle and giant dreamcatcher to the pirate ship outside the main house. Wish and Irene were incredibly friendly and found us a pitch with a covered fire pit for our huge bell tent. Nothing beats cooking on an open fire every evening while watching the sunset! And when it gets dark, there are fairy lights and solar lamps dotted around which lend a magical air to the place. Even on the days we had rain we could still sit out with a fire. The honesty shop was brilliant for all the little things, like eggs and tinder. Site facilities aren’t fancy – wash up and water collection facilities, one shower and two composting loos (when we were there) but they’re all you need (and the composting loos work beautifully and honestly don’t smell). A gorgeous, tranquil site that’s just perfect for getting completely away from it all.
Just what we needed
We stayed over the August bank holiday weekend and were extremely pleased. The location is excellent, the owners very hospitable and the property quiet and peaceful. We chose Faerie Thyme because we had no children that weekend and were looking for a quiet, adult break. This camp site delivered. The amenities were clean and well looked after, but most of all we enjoyed the fire pit and built-in covering with picnic table provided. Just made for easy life and worry free weekend. We would highly recommend this for an adult getaway.
We arrive needing a one night stay before heading off to tour the coast of Wales. The site was so good that we seriously considered completely changing our plans and staying the week. The feel of the site is so relaxed and chilled that you just want to crack open the next bottle of wine. Wish and Irene are really good, helpful hosts. The site is really cool, spiritual and peaceful. We will definitely be back.
Quiet and Gorgeous
Well, what can I say? We are amateur campers and I felt a little nervous so I bought everything with us in the car – to be fair we didn't need anything. Katie the Caravan was fully kitted out and the campsite had everything you would need on site – a little well stocked honesty shop which we got logs and chutneys from, hot showers and some really cool compost loo's that Wish made himself.
The hosts are gorgeous people. Irene and Wish are well educated about the land around. We fitted so much into our two days with their advice – we had barbecues on the camp fire outside the caravan under our little shelter, plenty of fresh air and peace. I would recommend this quaint little campsite to anyone looking for peace quiet and fresh air. We will be back soon. Thank you again.
We have just returned from a couple of days at Faerie Thyme and I would happily recommend this as one of the most friendly, relaxing, chilled and interesting sites I have ever been to. Everyone on site is friendly and helpful and also a mine of knowledge of where to visit and locals places of interest. Thank you Wish, Irene, Caz and Kate for such an amazing site, long may you continue and I can't wait until my next visit.
Faerie Thyme - the perfect retreat...
We've just returned from a fabulous weekend camping at Faerie Thyme. This is the best campsite I've ever stayed at! The welcome was lovely and Irene and Wish were on hand throughout if we needed anything. Our woodland pitch, The Ashes, was just brilliant, secluded, tranquil, overlooking the rest of the site. The site is lovely at any time but when the night comes and all the fairy lights and solar lamps come on it's just magical. The Honesty Shop is great, providing logs, bread, jams and chutneys as well as local meats, eggs and the campsite must-have, marshmallows. :)We will definitely be back! Thank you to Wish, Irene and the cats (Guinevere, Arthur and Merlin). xxx
We were made most welcome by Wish and Irene on our two day stay. We had a lovely time despite the wet and windy weather. The amenities were as described and the hot shower was a welcome relief from the cold. Small cosy welcoming site. Would not hesitate to re-visit.
