A welcoming riverside holiday park in the shadow of a medieval castle

It’s fairly unusual for Cool Camping to give the thumbs up to a place that calls itself a 'holiday park'. But then again it’s fairly unusual for a holiday park to limit pitches to just 35 in a six-acre field. It’s even more unusual for a small site to offer a water supply, electric hook up and grey water disposal at every all-weather pitch. And it’s practically unheard of to find a site that’s in the shadow of a castle, steps away from a World Heritage Site and on the banks of a river in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. But that’s what you get at Llandyn Holiday Park – as well as the handy bonuses of a pretty town, a country pub and an impressive aqueduct all within walking distance.

The location of Llandyn Holiday Park in the Dee Valley, just a mile outside of Llangollen, has been proved over many years. Caravan rallies and clubs have returned year after year for private annual meets but now this lovely spot on an organic dairy farm is open to all. Campervans, motorhomes and caravans are well catered for with super-spacious, serviced gravel pitches. And there are five off-grid grassy plots too. Like we said, all are welcome – and that includes your dog. In fact, it’s the perfect place for them with walks in all directions.

You can walk up the hill to see the ruins of the medieval Castell Dinas Bran, along the neighbouring River Dee or along the towpath on the Llangollen Canal. Head west and both water-side walkways will take you into town or east to reach the Pontycysyllte Aqueduct, which carries the canal high over the river. It’s this, and the surrounding 11-mile stretch of canal, that has earned a World Heritage listing from UNESCO. Built during the industrial revolution, it’s a masterpiece of engineering that meant goods could be carried by water from England into the Welsh uplands.

Once you’ve admired it from the towpath you can head to Llangollen to board a boat to cruise over it. And there’s plenty more to tempt you into town; shops, cafes, museums and steam train rides on the Llangollen Railway. You certainly won’t run out of things to do, and that’s without using the car. But should you wish to venture further, it’s easy to do. The site is handily located, out of earshot, but just a field away from the A539 which makes this quiet and rural spot surprisingly easy to get to and to explore from. The English border is 30 miles in one direction and Snowdonia National Park 30 miles in the other.

Nearby

The site sits between the River Dee and the World Heritage-listed Pontycysyllte Canal, just one mile from Llangollen and less than three from the impressive Pontycysyllte Aquaduct. It's within the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and just below the hilltop ruins of Castell Dinas Bran, which is well worth a walk. In fact there's plenty of great walking and cycling in the area and host, Catherine, a keen fell runner, is happy to share tips. Llangollen has plenty of independent shops and places to eat and drink as well as the chance to enjoy a ride on a steam train on the Llangollen Railway (01978 860979) or on the canal via a horse-drawn boat (01978 860702) from Llangollen Wharf. There's also Plas Newyd House & Gardens (01978 862834) to look around. Further afield, Chirk Castle (01691 777701) and Erddig House and Gardens (01978 355314) are both within 30 minutes' drive of site – as is the edge of Snowdonia National Park at Bala.

Food & Drink

There are plenty of cafés, pubs, bars, restaurants and shops in Llangollen. Some options recommended by your hosts are the bar and grill at The Three Eagles (01978 869595) and Gales Wine Bar (01978 860089). For a riverside spot try the Corn Mill (01978 869 555), for a meal and a pint, or the Riverbanc (01978 799903) for coffee and cake. In the other direction from the campsite, and even closer to site, just half a mile down the road, is the Sun Trevor pub (01978 860 651). Head to the tearooms at Plas Newydd House (01978 862834) just on the edge of town for afternoon tea or a, little beyond town, three miles away, to the Abbey Farm Bistro (01978 861297).

Perfect setting

We recently camped at this new site and found it brill. Spacious plots in a beautiful setting. The walk up to the castle is a must, and we also loved the walk into town along the canal. We will return next summer.

Its a nice quiet site, with fully serviced hard standing pitches. Its not been open long but the facilities are great and the wardens are lovely. Great access to Llangollen via a path or the Canal. Can't fault it and will be back.

Fantastic weekend break

Really good location with an easy walk to Llangollen. fantastic staff, pitches, and toilet block. The area is incredibly dog friendly both on and off the site. Our only minor complaint was the slightly high price for a non-electric pitch. We hope to return in a few years time!

Great, friendly camping experience.

Myself, Sue my girlfriend and our 9 year old staffie Pippa, turned up for 1 night only, just to see whether Sue and the dog would like it. Sue loved the experience, Pippa loved every minute, from swimming in the River Dee, which was spitting distance from our orning, the camp site itself is very well maintained, toilets, showers where spot on, water next to the van, a hook up to electricity if you wanted, Linda and Paul were loverly and without Paul's help I wouldn't have put the Orning up, would deffo recommend 😁👍🏻👍🏻

Perfect base for exploring the area.

Llandyn is in the perfect location for exploring the local area. A 20(ish) minute walk along the river brings you straight into Llangollen and an hours walk (ish) in the opposite direction along the picturesque Shropshire Union canal brings you to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. On arrival the wardens were really friendly and welcoming and the site itself was spotless! It has very modern facilities (toilets and shower blocks) and electric hook up at each pitch (grass & hardstanding). We walked to the Aqueduct on day one, stopping at the Sun Trevor pub on route back (the pub being a 20 min stroll from the site) & spent day 2 at Plas Newydd in Llangollen. Really great base, thankyou! ☺️

Great family site

We are just back from a great couple of days at Llandyn holiday park, on arrival we were greeted by the the owners who were very friendly and helpful and showed us to the available pitches. We were informed of all the local walks and the best way to get to town and the shops. The site itself is lovely the pitches are nice and flat and dont hold water and the toilet and shower block is brand new and very clean. From the site it is a nice 20 minute stroll along the canal path into town or a less than 5 minute drive. We would definitely return to this site.

Lovely site in a great location

This campsite is in a great location for visiting Llangollen and the surrounding area. There are a choice of routes into town either along the old railway line or the canal. If you head in the opposite direction on the tow path you will reach a very nice dog friendly pub. We paddled our kayak from a put in on the canal just a short walk from the site all the way to the amazing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and back, which in a fantastic place to visit. The wardens were really friendly and great with the kids who enjoyed being given “jobs”. The facilities were modern and clean. We will definitely be back.

Perfect stay

With this being one of our first camping trips we didn't know what to expect however this place was so beautiful and clean that we will definitely be returning! The owners are really friendly, and even the people staying there were lovely and welcoming. The location is perfect (about a 15 minute walk along the river from town and just over the road from the walk up to Castell Dinas Bran). We had plenty of room around our pitch and all in all our stay was very peaceful. I would highly recommend.
