Mountain Lodge Glamping
Tan-y-Gopa Road, Abergele, Conwy LL22 8DT
Mountain Lodge might just be North Wales' best kept secret. Plotted on the slopes above the unassuming market town of Abergele (lesser-known neighbour of Llandudno), the features of this hillside-hideaway read like a glampers' wish list. Overlooking the 19th century Gothic folly of Gwrych Castle, her undulating, buttercup-dappled slopes (in the spring at least – be sure to bring your wellies in the winter) give the place a faintly Alpine air. And while the Von Trapp family mightn't be on hand to greet you, the hills are certainly alive here... alive with the sound of contented campers.
Tudor and Penny Roberts, your industrious and affable hosts, have been busy creating Mountain Lodge's truly unique luxury glamping abodes. The lovingly-restored Shepherds' Hut (for couples) and adjacent Stable serve as the sleeping and living quarters, respectively. Just a stone's throw away, the Woodman's Hut can sleep an extra three. Constructed from locally-grown Douglas Fir, this eco-friendly, ergonomic cabin is also insulated with sheep's wool. These ingeniously-designed dwellings are fitted out with all the modern conveniences needed to make your stay here truly fuss-free (double bed, hot shower, comfy sofa). But despite the luxury, Mountain Lodge has a real sense of self – from the rustic charm of the wood-burning stoves and slate-tile floor, to the kitchenette's Belfast sink.
Accommodation aside, it's the little touches that really make your stay. Touches like freshly-baked Welsh cakes waiting for guests upon arrival; the expert local knowledge of your hosts; a well-stocked fridge; cooked breakfast brought to you; and the offer of a lift to the station for carless campers. Didn't we tell you this was North Wales' best kept secret?
To add even further to the intrigue and sense of new discovery, there's the Carneddau. The shadow of Snowdon looms large of a this part of the world, however this lesser-known mountain range boasts the famous 'Fourteen Peaks'. For those intrepid (or should that be foolhardy) enough to attempt the 24 hour 'Welsh 3000s Challenge', Mountain Lodge, with it's panoramic views of the range, makes for an ideal base camp.
With the rugged peaks of Carneddau and Snowdonia, and its proximity to the stunning Colwyn Bay, Mountain Lodge really does offer the best of sea and sky. Back on site, the surrounding woodlands teem with all manner of avian audio courtesy of buzzards, red kites, and ravens. You'll find ducks and geese in the next door field's lake, while at dusk, you can count the bats emerge from the darkness of the forest canopy.
The Owner Says
Myself and my partner stayed here mid September, we booked this as we wanted to stay somewhere unusual and away from it all. That is exactly what we got, it is the most peaceful and beautiful place and beyond our expectation. If you want peace and quiet, relaxation, views of the surrounding countryside and lovely welcoming hosts then this is the place to go. There is a long country track leading up to the area and mountain lodge is on your left when you reach the top, the owners home is at the entrance and we were greeted by Tudor an Penny (and Alfie the gorgeous Labrador who accompanied Penny to show us around). The sleeping accommodation is in the hut next to the barn, the one in the field on the website picture has now been removed, this shepherds hut was awesome, it is beautiful inside and so cosy, the bed and pillows so comfortable and the view when you open the door in the morning is simply stunning. The living accommodation is in the barn, it has a seating area, kitchen (you cook on the wood burning stove), and bathroom with thick soft towels provided. Through a door and you are into the open fronted barn where there is a sofa facing an open area so you can sit and enjoy the views in comfort, there is a dart board and a cupboard with board games and sketch pads, some people had been very artistic with drawings and paintings of the view, etc. Penny asked us to ring over when we were ready for breakfast and she delivered it to the kitchen table, full cooked breakfast using local produce with glasses of fresh orange juice. She brought us a loaf of bread and on arrival there were home made welsh cakes waiting for us, wild flowers in a vase, butter, milk and yoghurts in the fridge as well as jam and marmalade and a jar of local honey. They do have another barn in another field that has lights but no other electric, it has a solar powered shower to the side of the building and a compost toilet to the rear. We had a look around and it was very cosy and secluded, perfect if you want to completely get away from it all. There are lovely forest walks nearby, we walked into the town one day and explored the forest another, there are sheep in the field in front of the barn and horses a little in the distance, birds in the skies and we could hear a woodpecker in the tree. Everything added to the experience which we really cant recommend enough and we will most definitely be visiting again.
My partner and I booked Mountain Lodge for a chance to simply get away from the bustle for a couple of days. We are from Leeds so it wasn't too far a drive. Being experienced campers Mountain Lodge was a bit of a step up for us rather than a tent! It took a while to find as we stupidly used our Sat Nav - it does tell you not to do that on the website as it is in the sticks a bit but we managed to find our way. When we arrived we were taken aback by the sheer beauty of the setting. The view from the Shepherd's hut is simply breath taking - absolutely stunning. We were greeted by Penny, the owner who is simply wonderful. One of the friendliest and most welcoming people we have ever met. So helpful and offered lots of advice about what to do in the area. The Shepherd's Hut and Barn consist of a living area and a bedroom are that are two seperate units, the former being a very quirky little hut on wheels! Everything about the Hut and Barn is spectacular. From the comfortable cosy bedding to the open door area of the barn where you can sit and watch the world go by (with birds flying in and out every so often). When we arrived there were freshly baked welsh teacakes, a stocked fridge and some bread. We literally couldn't want for anything. There are so many little touched about the place that make such a difference.. lighting in areas where its needed, lavender in the wash-room, fresh flowers everywhere and log burners if it gets a little chilly. This place really is wonderful. A true hidden gem and we will definitely be back.
Just utter bliss
If you want a get away I highly recommend Mountain Lodge in Abergele, just an amazing place and service from Penny and Tudor faultless. We arrived well prepped but could have turned up with the bare minimum, bread and jams, teas and coffee, milk, yoghurts and fruit already there. The log burner all ready burning hot and a hot water bottle in the bed. Farmhouse breakfast provided and delivered to the Stone hut whatever time you want between 8.30 and 10.30am. There's no electricity, no wifi just stunning peace and quiet. There are solar panels for lights, but battery fairy lights sprinkled everywhere and candles too. Logs provided. The compost outside eco loo is not one bit smelly btw and a damn site nicer than many indoor loos I have had to use and the outside shower is utterly lush. Thank you again Penny and Tudor for making our stay such a perfect getaway. Kind regards Birgitta and Kent
We have just returned from a fabulous weekend at the Shepherds Hut. The hut itself was gorgeous. Very cosy, spacious and warm. The bed was so comfortable, I haven't had such a good nights sleep in a long time! The stable and barn were fabulous, with all the home comforts you could ask for. Tudor and Penny were wonderful hosts, so friendly and accommodating and made our stay all the more enjoyable. The surroundings are just amazing. We had such a great time and would highly recommend the place to anyone looking for some relaxation in beautiful surroundings. We're already planning our next stay!

Lovely Stone Hut
Me, my fiancé and Luther the Beagle had a beautiful weekend staying in the Stone Hut at Mountain Lodge. We arrived in the cold rain but were warmed up quickly as Penny had got the fire going ready for our arrival and also baked us a lovely cake and a loaf of bread. The Hut was so cozy with lovely freshly picked wild flowers to decorate. Very secluded spot with a hole field to ourselves surrounded by woodland and wildlife. Woke up every morning listening to the birds and Penny made and delivered breakfast to our door. The shower and toilet were brilliant, an experience in themselves. Penny and Tudor were great hosts, they even got our clothes that were drying in when it rained. All round a magical place to stay and can't wait to visit again. Thank you.

A Little Gem
Booked a night in the Stone Barn as a gift for my husband. Arrived amid blustery winds and heavy rain but not even the grim weather could spoil what we can only describe as a truly amazing and romantic getaway. A remarkable bolthole enhanced by an attention to detail that made this place stand out head and shoulders above the crowd. Nothing was too much trouble for our hosts, Penny & Tudor. The cooked breakfast was excellent and the Victoria spongecake a godsend after a 2 hour walk in the wind & rain. The outside shower was an experience not to be missed and the log burning stove helped keep us toasty warm all evening. Thank you for your kind hospitality - we shall definitely be recommending to friends and making a return visit very soon.
My favourite place to stay in Wales
Thank you to Penny & Tudor who made this a lovely place to visit.
We stayed in the Stone hut which was lovely & the secluded location gives you the feeling that this is your very own house and piece of land to enjoy (even if only for a night or two!) I was dubious at first about the outside toilet and shower, but have to admit I actually enjoyed it – and it was October!
It was the little touches that really made a difference – fresh loaf of bread and butter and homemade cake upon our arrival. Seasonal flowers & fruit decorated our room and stocked with some good reads to while away the long winter nights in front of the fire. Breakfast is provided and have to say was excellent – made with fresh local ingredients, hand carried to our door and delicious!
Penny & Tudor are lovely hosts and very interesting to talk to – wish I stayed longer to converse more! They have great knowledge of the local area so if you’re not sure what to do they are happy to help.
Even if you don’t make full use of the local areas this is a great place to visit to just relax, unwind and play house. Well worth every penny & will definitely visit again.
P.S The fresh cuttings I was given survived the journey home and are growing nicely – thank you Penny!
Our 2nd visit to the shepherds hut at mountain lodge, a wonderful place to stay, Penny and Tudor certainly go that extra mile. On our arrival fresh fruit and flowers, a proper fresh baked loaf and home baked cake (on our 1st visit a Victoria sandwich baked by their son and on our 2nd visit a banana loaf baked by their daughter, both truly scrumptious. Penny cooks a top dog breakfast and I've even seen her hand squeezing the oranges for your fresh orange juice. Nothing is to much trouble for Penny and Tudor, our granddaughter had the time of her life from collecting the eggs with Penny from their chickens with the stroll down the lane to stroke and feed the neighbours shire horses to using the tree swing - quite a lot. Thanks Penny and Tudor, we will be back. Jacki and Dave.
A luxury place to unwind
A bumpy drive along a barely used farm track made us realise that we would be staying in a place away from civilisation. We expected simple, rustic and basic accommodation but we were very very wrong!!!! A warm welcome was received from the lovely Penny and we were guided to the shepherds hut where freshly baked bread and cake awaited us, Penny had even supplied a thermos of hot water in case we couldn't get the fire burning to heat our own! As we explored the hut, we thought we were in a 5 star hotel.....fluffy white towels, beautiful bed linen, sumptuous toiletries and a cool box stocked with an array of essentials! The kitchen had a wonderful stock of teas, coffees, preserves and cereal aswell as every pan and utensil you could ever need. The hut definitely had rustic charm and meant we could truly unwind from our hectic lives. Despite the shower being in an outside hut, there was wonderfully hot water on tap and it was definitely better than our shower at home! It was just pure bliss and we couldn't wait to sample Penny's breakfast in the morning......we were not disappointed in the slightest, it was delicious and kept us going well into the afternoon. Penny and Tudor are wonderful hosts and their hospitality is beyond what was expected, they made us feel so welcome at mountain lodge. We wish that we could keep this little part of Wales a secret for ourselves but that would be mean......we definitely recommend this little retreat as a place to relax, unwind and enjoy being switched off from the world! Thank you again Penny and Tudor, see you soon! X x
We would like to thank Tudor and Penny for the warm welcome they gave to us when we arrived at Mountain Lodge. We had planned long walks around the stunning hilly countryside.....and ended up staying at the site all day. Penny made us a lovely cake, and we felt relaxed as soon as we put our bags down. This place is absolutely fabulous and has all the amenities you could wish for, very tastefully decorated, very ecological, the wood burning stove kept us warm in the evening and we cooked our dinner on it. The outside barn shelters you from the wind and the rain and provides stunning views from the comfort of a sofa. Perfect bolthole for those wishing to get in touch with nature. We would recommend this to anyone who likes peace and quiet in beautiful surrroundings. We will be back soon, Carole & Bob.
