An idyllic, wooded, Wye Valley escape, offering glamping pods, a treehouse and traditional camping, all equidistant from Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons
Set between two spellbinding valleys – the Elan and the Wye – Celtic Woodland Holidays enjoys a peerless position amongst Wales' most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Just outside the historic Wyeside town of Builth Wells, it's the perfect base for outdoor adventurists with Snowdonia to the north, the Brecon Beacons to the south, and the Cambrian Mountains and Cardigan Bay a little to the west. Then again, once you settle in to your luxury off-grid digs at this tranquil woodland retreat, you might not venture far after all...
The five pods that comprise the bulk of the lodgings here are enterprising host Leigh's own patented design. Christened the moduLog, these unique timber-built pods owe as much to treehouses as they do to wooden cabins, blending seamlessly in the sylvan surroundings. Constructed from locally sourced timber, each occupies its own elevated and secluded woodland clearing. Low-impact features such as sheep’s wool insulation and solar power (with enough juice to power the, frankly redundant, television and DVD player) are in keeping with the site's all-round eco-friendly credentials. Interior features include a wood-burning stove atop a slate hearth, a beautifully finished kitchen space (utensils included), and box seating with in-built storage that convert into comfy beds. Unlike the more commonplace pod designs, these canny cabins offer a far more welcoming space to unwind, with light pouring in through the French windows and a spacious porch for guests to enjoy al fresco dining and exceptional sunsets across the Wye Valley.
For those larger family getaways, the newly constructed treehouse happily hosts up to six guests, with separate double and twin rooms, plus a sofa bed in its spacious lounge. And for those who prefer their camping the proper way, a scattering of all-weather woodland pitches have been carved out in the forest. Made from artificial grass, they comfortably accommodate a family-sized four berth tent, and each has a raised barbecue and picnic bench.
It's the little extra touches that really elevate the experience here. Like the facilities hub you can call into for a hot shower a game of air hockey. Or the charming onsite shop stocking everything from torches and bedding packs, to locally-reared sausages and homemade cakes. Or the ingeniously up-cycled tractor tyres put to use as help-yourself-herb gardens – perfect for enlivening your dinner in the wood-fired pizza oven. In 2019, Leigh even added a wood-fired sauna and a cold-water plunge shower, which combine for an exhilarating wellness experience in the great outdoors. Not that it's all fancy dining and pampering. Nippers can really let their imaginations run wild here, too, making the most of the enchanting woodland setting. Get them to see what wildlife they can spot on the kilometre-long woodland trail, or see who triumphs in the fairy door hunt.
Family glamping pods include 2 pull-out double beds; couples glamping pod includes 1. Treehouse includes 1 double bedroom, 1 twin room and a double sofa bed. All-weather tent pitches accommodate 4-berth tents (5m x 3m). The Hub facilities block includes toilets (extra eco compost loos available in the woods), 2 mens showers, 3 ladies showers, plus a shower wet room for families. It also features a communal kitchen (with fridge and microwave), laundry facilities, and games room (with table football, pool, table tennis and air hockey, plus books, magazines and DVDs). Free Wi-Fi available throughout The Hub. Communal BBQ and seating area with a gas BBQ and wood-fired pizza oven. Wood-fired sauna and cold plunge shower (book time slots at reception). Kid-friendly features include play zone with climbing frame, slides, swings and tree fort; fairy door hunt; woodland trail. Onsite shop sells essentials including toiletries and bedding packs. Campfires permitted in the 2 communal fire pits.
Glampers, tent campers, couples, families, dogs, groups – yes Caravans, campervans, motorhomes, stag & hen parties – no.
Builth Wells (1 mile away), famous for hosting the Royal Welsh Show every summer, boasts a pleasing blend of heritage and outdoor adventure. Builth Wells Golf Club (01982 553296) is one of Wales' most scenic spots to tee off. Seek out the town's historic park, The Groe, where you can enjoy a picnic beside the 18th century bridge crossing the River Wye. From here, you can take the tree-lined riverside path through the heart of the Wye Valley AONB. It's 136 miles in total to the river's source at Chepstow (via stunning Hay-on-Wye) home to the town's iconic Norman castle. A short drive to the south, the Brecon Beacons National Park offers plenty of activities including canoeing, horse riding, and mountain biking. The wildlife-rich Elan Valley is another great landscape to explore. It’s a designated International Dark Sky Park, offering unparalleled stargazing in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains. For a day at the seaside, head west to Aberyswyth and New Quay where you can watch dolphins in Cardigan Bay.

Perfect place to base ourselves for a weekend of walking. The site was easy to find, and a short walk into town. Shared facilities (toilet, shower etc) were clean and quiet. The glamping pods were hidden away and it felt like we were on our own in the forest. They were perfectly sized for us, and good supply of cooking utensils. Loved it, already planning our next trip back!
We stayed mid-week when the campsite is quiet which gave us a peaceful and incredible get away. We stayed in the treehouse and we loved it! (We even booked an extra night as we didn't want to leave!). Everything from the decoration to the compost toilet gave us a great experience and some incredible memories, we enjoyed doing our bbqs in our own bbq area and eating our breakfast up in the tree. The bed was comfortable and the rooms were warm. We will definitely be back to enjoy more of the stunning surrounding area which Celtic Woodland Holidays has to offer, thanks so much to the owners for offering everything that you do and we'll see you again soon.
It’s hard to describe how wonderful our stay at Celtic Woodland Holidays was! Where to start? The cabins are beautifully simple. We stayed in Bedw, tucked away on the edge of the small Road Wood, looking over a meadow and then out onto the amazing with the hills in the distance. A perfect view from our deck - we watched the sun go down every evening. The cabin was comfortable and warm with essentials provided. (Bedding available) A short walk away is a well equipped kitchen with fridges, cooking facilities and excellent hot showers and loos. All spotless. A small play area with swings and things, a star gazing platform and a little shop make this place extra family friendly but equally lovely for adults. The area is wonderful... beautiful walks straight from the camp, great swimming in the River Wye, and Builth Wells is a great little town with good amenities. Lots of wildlife including red kites, herons and field mice spotted. The hedgerows were full of wild flowers. We loved the fact that we met very few people out and about. It’s quiet and perhaps relatively undiscovered. We had a fantastic time. A great place for a relaxing break.
A hidden gem
Celtic Woodland Holidays is a haven for the imagination. A stay here allows you to escape from the busy pace of life and connect with the wonder of nature. From the craftsmanship of the accommodation to the Tree House of children's dreams, the site as been curated beautifully to cultivate a sense of adventure in young and more mature minds alike! The pods are in thoughtful locations around the site, providing stunning views as well as privacy. The pizza oven, BBQs and fire pits make for a perfect evening of good food and company. The site is within walking distance of the town of Builth via a beautiful river walk. We would wholehearted recommend a stay here and will definitely be back.
Beautiful views in a beautiful area
We had a really lovely weekend at Celtic Woodland holidays. We stayed in the Derw pod. The views were stunning. Builth Wells seems like a beautiful little town, we didn't explore it much but we did walk in the park which is gorgeous. The toilet and shower is in a block across the campsite. The paths are lit with fairy lights in the dark which is beautiful however it seems that after a certain time, the lights illuminating the path on the side of the reception are turned off so bring a torch! It was good to have a toilet & shower room just to ourselves which locked with a key. All facilities were very clean. The shower however, was wild. It turns off after about 20 secs and you can't adjust the angle or the temperature which was frustrating. The entire room was damp for the rest of the time we were there due to it blasting half way across the room! It'd be lovely if there was a fire pit or chimnea or something on the deck so you could sit out after dark. The BBQ area only allows for disposable BBQs. There is a small gas stove inside the pod. The pods are off grid with no electricity or running water, which we loved. You have to collect water from the block over by the reception (container provided). It would be amazing if some sort of pump was installed into the sink just to make it easier to wash hands, etc. We had a really lovely weekend, its just the little niggles above that stopped us rating this as 5*.
Lovely Autumn break
We stayed in the Epynt lodge for a long weekend, and it was a joy from start to finish. We were met with a great welcome, the cabin was clean and the beds had been made up lovely. Really enjoyed the stay, great facilities all round. Highly recommended for a "back-to-nature" break.
An amazing experience
Just had a really enjoyable stay in Poplys, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a break off-grid. The cabin and facilities are absolutely spotless and Nic & Leigh very helpful. I’d recommend The Fountain in Builth Wells for great food and ale too!
Stayed in the Bothi for 3 nights and we loved it. Secluded and surrounded by trees so it felt nice and private. The next closest pod was a nice distance away so it really did feel like you were alone. The hub was nice, with pool, fussball and air hockey, and the shower and toilet block was really clean too. It's not too far in to the town either, about 1 mile away so in walking distance. There are a few nice walks around there too! We would really love to come back and try out one of the other pods, or even the treehouse (which looks incredible!) Thank you for a lovely long weekend away. I will definitely be recommending Celtic Woodland Holidays to anyone I know.
Unbelievable views of Cambrian mountains, v v clean . Friendly and helpful staff. Bedw glamping highly recommended. First time done anything like this. Will definitely be back
A fantastic base for a magical week of activities in South Wales, but waking up to the peace in the woods and evening campfires just absolutely made our holiday! My boys were very very taken with the bug out shop as well... boys and their toys... looking forward to returning for some bushcraft fun
Fantastic four nights in Bedw
The cabins were far better than we were expecting, lovely and warm with comfy beds and a spectacular view. The hosts are very welcoming and the amenities were hotel standard and spotlessly clean. The site itself is really well laid out with fairy lights on the walkways and a great play area. We would definitely stay again - my daughter really wants to try the treehouse!
Brilliant value for money
Have a fab weekend. The place is brilliant value for money compared with other similar sites. Cabin was fab. Could be more information given on site - cool boxes rather than fridge, but fresh cool packs available each day, can’t charge phones or use hairdryers in cabin only main building. But think that’s also a plus as everyone used devices less. Fab little playground and wonderful to think we were off grid for the weekend. I’ve recommended to friends already and we’ll def be back
The Epynt, beautiful views with glamping comfort
Beautiful piece of Welsh woodland. Very family friendly, the kids enjoyed the playground, games room and running round the woods. We loved the views, the calm, the comfort of glamping with proper beds and using the fabulous pizza oven. Will be back for another rejuvenating break soon. Next time will bring more ice packs for the cool box and not bother bring so many chargers (no mains power in the pods but easy to use secure charging ports in the main building.) Builth Wells is just a moment away with excellent food shopping and places to eat and the honesty shops had a good selection of basic supplies.
Lovely stay, but not much to do
The site is lovely and very welcoming. The pod itself was really good, lovely pod and really well equipped. We would definitely stay again as it was a great price for the duration of our stay. The forest was peaceful and was a lovely, tranquil setting for us city dwellers who needed to be off the grid and shut down for a little bit. There was a couple of negatives which I wish I was aware of before we went as it didn't dampen the experience slightly. Due to covid the compost toilets were shut, meaning we had to trek up a big hill every time we needed the loo (in the middle of the night it wasn't very enjoyable!). Though understandably isn't their fault, it was still frustrating this wasn't noted before booking. Every time we cooked on the stove, it set off the fire alarm even with all windows and doors open (even just boiling water sometimes) which was a bit frustrating. The TV also didn't really work - which was ok because we didn't plan to use it much anyway but was frustrating when we wanted to chuck on a film or something at the end of the day - not sure if it was the TV, connection or the set up.
Ty Coeden Treehouse
What a magical experience! We (3 adults and a child) stayed comfortably for 3 nights in the treehouse and we didn’t want for anything. Fairy doors and fairy lights made our evenings roasting marshmallows that little bit more special! Nic was so welcoming and friendly and made you feel completely at home - 10/10 for customer service. Facilities were beautifully clean, the hot showers were lovely! If we had to pick anything at all to improve it would be that there were no shower caps in the honesty shop BUT there are hairdryers supplied and after all..it is Glamping! Definitely wouldn’t hesitate to return as we had such a nice time.
Really good and relaxing site with the village 1 hour away from the site. Really enjoyed it will look into going back again hopefully with a bigger group
quite and peaceful
it was a nice experience but unfortunately the weather wasn't that good and also this Covid-19 was around and everywhere was close and very quite, it was a lovely little place and lovely little hut I had, idea for two or three nights sleep
Fantastic family glamping experience
Myself and my family have just got back from a few days glamping in the Popyls pod. The pod was cosy, warm and very well organised but have to say what stood out were the amazing views that we had the pleasure of from the comfort of the sofa/beds! The kids loved exploring the woods and the games room in the lodge - the adults enjoyed relaxing on the comfy sofas too! Facilities are great and the composting toilets rather nice. My other half who has never glamped really enjoyed the experience and is raring to try more of the same-and given his first experience was in a wet and stormy February that says something about the quality of our accommodation etc! Very hospitable and friendly staff and we have already recommended the place to family and friends and cannot wait to return.
A perfect weekend in the woods
We’ve just got back from a brilliant weekend in the treehouse. Beautiful accommodation with everything you could need in a really pretty woodland. The treehouse was warm and cosy enough even in the middle of winter. We will definitely be back!
Great eco stay!
My husband and I stayed for a couple nights in one of the pods, with our dogs. It was comfortable, functional and a lovely setting for a short break. We walked into town to check out the local pubs for food and a couple drinks, it was an easy walk providing you have a torch! We also cooked in the pod on the stove, it was well equipped but the surface area is limited. The log burner was fab and warmed the pod well, the eco toilets were really convenient and the facilities in the main building were clean and really useful in the pouring rain! Would stay here again.
My twin sister and I have stayed at Celtic Woodland Holidays a few times. We had the opportunity to take our family and friends there. Our experience was out of this world! We really enjoyed every second throughout our stay there and we highly recommend it to everyone. The place is extremely clean and sophisticated.
Amazing forrest camping experience
When we arrived we were greeted very warmly and shown around all the camp site facilities everything is clean and well kept it has a fully equipped kitchen which everyone is free to use so no need for camping stoves if you don't have one, the hub is fab for the kids or for all the family to relax on a comfy sofa. Our 8 year old son loved it exploring playing in the woods or the park. It has a small shop were the owners trust you to put the money for things in a honesty box , I would definitely recommend this site 4 days wasn't enough hopefully we will go for a full week next time. Thanks for a fab weekend away :)
We stayed in the treehouse and had a lovely exerpience! The treehouse is much bigger than the photo's suggest! There are 3 different chambers connected by stairs! 2 of them are the sleeping rooms (the highest one is around 5m above the ground!) and the biggest one is the living area. Our kids just loved running around the different floors! evry floor has his own small deck and you reallu are between the trees! There is no running water, but we could collect water from the communal tab. So we still had a camping feeling, which we enjoyed! The only consideration we have is that the beds are really small. The double bed looked more like a single bed and the single beds really don't fit an adult. So one of us ended sleeping on the sofa... But overall a very nice and extraordinary expercience!
peaceful place to stey
Beautiful views, friendly people, enjoyable stay.
Had a really nice time in the pod,
Great woodland get away! Super hosts, really friendly and everything you need there! Would highly recommend if want a true outdoors experience!
We spent a long weekend camping on the all weather sites. The actual pitch is very well crafted with raised pitches surfaced with artificial grass. Each sight also has a very nicely built wooden table and BBQ area. The main building is nearby and more like a lodge inside than a camp sight. Everything was always clean and there is a surprising amount of equipment for shared use. The hub / entertainment area is also very nicely finished. The town is also within walking distance yet you feel remote at all times. No complaints, had a great weekend. other than some pitches might be a but close to each other for some tastes.
Beautiful view, excellent hosts nice pod but bed was uncomfortable and the lights kept flickering, the tv turned itself off after only 10 minutes I know it was solar powered but expected to last longer than that
Fantastic family retreat!
We booked a group of 17 people and 4 dogs to camp/ stay in the lodges over the bank holiday. It was perfect! Very private and spacious with 2 fantastic communal fire pit. We had 7 children with us between the ages of 3 years and 12 years and, not once did I hear the phrase “I’m bored” the park/ play room and woodland area have them plenty to explore. The communal BBQ / pizza oven area was large enough to fit 17 to all cook and sit together and the campsite is perfectly lit at night with fairy lights. The showers/ toilet / kitchen area facilities where extremely clean. And the on-site shop was small but equipt with lots of useful and lovely things! The local area is beautiful with plenty of walks and pubs to eat during and be merry! We are already wanting to book again for next year! Thank you x
A fantastic woodland retreat
We have just returned from a lovely weekend at Celtic Woodland Holidays. We stayed in Bedw and loved it, the cabin is cosy with fantastic views and afternoon sun on the decking. The campsite has everything you need, great facilities; very clean and well kept. The hosts are very helpful and friendly, we even made friends with Doris and Minnie (the campsite dogs). All in all, we had a fantastic weekend and couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Clean, quiet, family friendly, with amazing views!
This is a small, very welcoming family-run campsite with by far the cleanest toilets and showers I've ever seen in a campground! We stayed in the Bedw pod, and enjoyed the afternoon sun on the balcony each day - gorgeous view! Highly recommend.
