Pod glamping and family camping on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, with a handy location near Brecon town and sunrises you'll never forget.

It’s easy to see why an Iron Age clan chose to build a fort on top of Pen-Y-Crug. The hill, known locally as ‘The Crug’ (pronounced creeg) is a superb vantage point, with breath-taking views across the Brecon Beacons, as well as local hills to the north and a good 10 miles or more of the River Usk sparkling between the trees below. It’s an enjoyable mile-and-a-half walk to the summit from the best local campsite, which is found roughly to the west of the hill – though we can’t actually verify by how many degrees. Next time we’ll take a compass.

Set almost precisely on the boundary of the Brecon Beacons National Park, 68 Degrees West is a camping and glamping site with views to boast of its own. Guests wake up to a sunrise over the Black Mountains, whose crinkled tops outline the horizon, before hopping through dewy grass to the newly built wash-block (super clean interiors and facilities for the disabled). On one side, the campsite is neighbour to renowned Cradoc Golf Club – you can watch people pinging balls across the driving range a few hundred metres away – while in the other directions it’s the rolling, sheep-dotted meadows that could only be Wales. For easy access to the national park and a quiet, secluded setting, it’s a tough spot to beat.

The campsite itself has been here since the ‘80s but it’s only recently that it’s been given a breath of fresh air with the new facilities block and a pair of beautiful timber pods. The structures – fitted with double-glazed doors to enjoy the view, a wood-burning stove for heating and a compact kitchenette for cooking – each sleep a family of four comfortably, while, in the meadow beyond, there is room for around 10 tents and a handful of campervans or caravans.

Hidden behind the hump of the Crug is Brecon town, three miles away. It’s a pleasant walk or a 10-minute drive and home to a host of good pubs and cafés. It’s also a good place to get your bearings before heading into the heart of the National Park, with mighty Pen y Fan to the south standing out to any keen hikers. Mountain biking and horse riding are extremely popular in the area, too, while fly fishing, for those with permits, in the River Usk is some of the best in Europe.

Communal facilities: 3 toilets and 3 showers in the ladies and 2 toilets, 2 urinals and 3 showers in the men’s, plus a disabled toilet/shower room/family room. Pods have a covered porch area and French-style, double-glazed doors, while, inside, they feature a lounge and kitchenette which transform into a sleeping area at night. The kitchen is equipped with kettle, toaster, cutlery, utensils, mugs, glasses and plates. Bed Linen and Towels are not provided.

Suitable For

Caravans, glampers, campervans – yes. Dogs – no.

68 Degrees West is right next door to Cradoc's championship golf course (01874 623658; regularly rated as one of the top 30 courses in Wales) and it's less than 50 minutes to Ryder Cup host Celtic Manor (01633 413000). Cycling and mountain biking are hugely popular in the area, with a fantastic route along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal towpath for those sticking to the flat. Brecon also marks the start of the Taff Trail which is a popular walking and cycle path that runs for 55 miles (89 km) to Cardiff Bay. For history, the crumbling clifftop castle of Carreg Cennen (01558 822291) at Trapp is certainly worth a visit, then there's Crickhowell Castle and magnificent Cyfarthfa Castle (01685 727371) too. The Brecon Beacons is a perfect place for horse lovers: There are over 600 miles of bridle paths and tracks. You can ride all day, sharing the views with the soaring buzzards – try Ellsemere Riding Centre (01874 658252) or, for something shorter, visit family-friendly Cantref Adventure Farm (01874 665223), where there's an activity centre with farm animals, an indoor play area, as well as horse and pony riding trips.

Food & Drink

For the nearest catering, neighbouring Cradoc Golf Club (01874 623658) has a bar and serves food and drink. As for local pubs, the grand Castle of Brecon Hotel (01874 624611) serves fancy food in an even fancier setting, while family-run HILLS Brecon (01874 611714) takes the opposite route, serving full-on, American-style burgers – but in a modern setting and with local producers keeping things thoroughly British. The Brecon Tap (01874 623888), right in the centre of the town, is also a good lounge-bar-restaurant-style spot. Outside of Brecon, The Felin Fach Griffin (01874 620111) is a great country pub choice.

Getting There

Travel through Brecon, following the b4520 up and out of Brecon. Turn left for Cradoc and, at the junction, you'll also see a sign for the campsite. Follow this road up to Cradoc and take the first right when you get to the golf club. Take the first laneway entrance (signposted) into the campsite.

Train to Llandovery (or to Merthyr Tydfil) and from there hop on a bus to Brecon. It's still 3 miles from Brecon to the campsite though.

Beautiful, luxury campsite with a stunning view

Arriving at 68 degrees was breath-taking and instantly lifted our very damp spirits! The camping field is spacious and very well-served with electricity and drinking water. The grass is lush and the view is just amazing. The facilities are hotel-standard with exceptionally clean, spacious and well thought-out showers and toilets even down to complimentary toiletries for the weary camper!! The only additional benefit would be the provision of a washing-up sink and drainer at the hot water station. Highly, highly recommend. The pods also look lovely-we would go back in a heartbeat.

Beautiful site with an amazing view!

We stayed in our micro-camper on one of the five pitches dedicated to motorhomes. The site was really lovely, with an amazing view! The pitches were a really great size which meant we could put up our gazebo as well, giving us more living space. The toilet facilities were the best I have ever seen at a campsite and even had shampoo, conditioner and shower gel all included. They were always clean and presentable too. The site itself was lovely and quiet, as there are only 5 pitches for motor homes and 5 glamping pods. A short drive to Brecon which meant picking up food supplies etc was really easy as Morrisons was just 6 minutes away. We explored all over the Brecons as even the furthest point was only a 45 minute drive through beautiful countryside. Will definitely come back to this site!

Perfect get away in the most amazing peace and tranquillity

I spent a week with a friend and teenage children. We had 2 pods (Y Cwtch and Y Glyd) and had an amazing time. Brecon is a less than 10 mins drive but we also walked there on a couple of occasions on the footpath over the hill which was scenic and took less than an hour. The pods are cosy and well equipped and the hot tub was a real added bonus and kept the kids entertained in the evenings. Phone signal was intermittent and no Wi-Fi but it was nice to have a break from the world of technology and even the kids managed! We had a couple of days out to the Gower coast which was about 1.5 hrs drive but well worth it, amazing coastline walks. Rachel and Lewis were extremely accommodating and work tirelessly to maintain an immaculate site with great facilities. We even lit the wood burner on a couple of evenings just for the novelty which was fab! My only criticism if I was to dig deep to find one would be the lack on a communal space for putting wet/dirty walking gear after a winters day on the mountains (which wasn't an issue this time but a consideration for winter trips) and access to a freezer for ice/ice packs. All in all a true amazing gem of a site!

Friendly and helpful hosts, excellent facilities, awesome views and location

A small site that avoids the chaos of bigger sites. Spectacular views of the Brecon Beacons and foothills, I spent much time marveling at the hillfort directly in front. The hosts were helpful, the toilet and shower facilities excellent and always clean. Well away from any roads or noise, the owls and sheep will help you drift off to sleep. Nearby Brecon is a lovely little town, everything you need is on your doorstep.

The perfect countryside getaway!

This was our third time at 68 degrees west, each time is as good as the first! This time we stayed in the Y-cwtch pod. The pod is well equipped with the basic things you need (fridge, cutlery, plates etc). The views are amazing and the hot tub is an added bonus to this cosy little pod. The shower block is immaculate and even that is equipped with the toiletries you need (shampoo, conditioner and body wash). Rachel & her partner are very friendly and nothing is too much hassle - they make you feel very welcome. Location is brilliant as there are plenty of places to visit such as Cradoc golf club, Brecon peddle boats and The Hills restaurant or if you want a chilled weekend there’s plenty of space to make your own fun around the pod, such as picnic benches and bbq’s. We will most defiantly be returning again, even after our third visit here.

Fantastic Holiday!

We stayed in the Y Cwtch pod for 6 nights and we loved it. The pod was clean and well equipped. The toilet block was immaculate and even had complementary shampoo and shower gel. I would definitely recommend 68 degrees West we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The only thing we struggled with was drying clothes and towels. We enjoyed the hot tub but it rained quite a bit while we were there so trying to dry towels and clothes was difficult. It would have been handy to have a little drying rack in the pod to hang a few things up

Mountain view

Stunning spot on the hill looking towards Pen y Fan. Stayed in our camper van just as restrictions were lifted so shower block wasn’t available but hosts were lovely and welcoming. Very peaceful surroundings. Would definitely return to this spot!

Fantastic Brecon Views

Great views to Pen y Fan with Pen-y-Crug hillfort in the foreground. Particularly lovely at sunset. We were in a camper. There are only 5 pitches just now (covid). They are in a row which means everyone gets the view. It's generally very peaceful, though with a golf course and farm nearly there is a certain amount of maintenance e.g. mowing and vehicle movements - only to be expected in this environment. The facilities were clean and pleasant with hand sanitiser and limits on numbers. Showers very hot (maybe almost slightly too hot!) and on a push button system. No tokens needed or anything like that. We tried to walk from the campsite on a public footpath to Pen-y-Crug via the farm and it may just have been our poor map reading skills but the farm didn't seem to have any stiles or signposts. I'd have thought people would walk from the campsite to Brecon past Pen-y-Crug all the time but we found it tricky and felt like we were trespassing and had to go a different way to marked on the map as fences where we were expecting stiles.

Stunning site with views to die for

Wonderful couple of days at 68 Degrees West. Beautiful, quiet site site with wonderful views over to the Brecon Beacons. Facilities were super clean and well organised to deal with COVID 19 restrictions. On our list for a return visit.

Great stay!

We really enjoyed our stay at 68 degree campsite and were kind of sad that we had to leave after one night. The pitch was great with incredible mountain views. The facilities were brand new and very very clean! Probably the cleanest facilities I have ever seen on a campsite. It’s a small campsite and very quiet! Lovely!

The best camping ever!

We absolutely loved this place. Everything is sparkling clean and new and the toilets and showers were the most luxurious I have ever seen on a campsite. We had a gorgeous view over the hills and were blessed with superb weather. The only slight improvement I could suggest is the washing up facilities. We were camping in a VW camper van and there was only one outdoor sink. I think mostly people use the sinks in their pods and I wasn’t about to wash dishes in the pristine toilets! Lewis who manages the site told me that they are planning a utility building with washing up space in the near future. There are points for water all around the caravan pitches and everything is gleaming. We can’t wait to come back and try a pod with a hot tub!

Excellent relaxing stay

Booked this for a nice little break away and got cancelled due to the bad weather. Ended up going on my own and having such a relaxing time. Would recommend and would stay again

We stayed in the Black Mountain Pemberton between Christmas and New Year. It was one of the best breaks we have had in a long time. Everything was so good, It is hard to know where to start. The mini Xmas tree and other decorations were a very nice touch. Rachel and Lewis were lovely and welcoming. The hot tub was delightful. The wood burner was very well constructed with very little smoke inside. Very cosy on the cold winter nights. The views were outstanding and the stars on the clear nights simply breathtaking. Cannot wait to book our next visit.

Not for camping.

It's a lovely site. We went camping for a week with friends. Unfortunately the owners have made the terrible mistake of allowing the caravan club to get their teeth into the site. They've banned camping from the site after a Caravan Club member complained that tents were in the same field as caravans. Unlike the Caravan and Camping club, this miserable organisation (the Caravan club) have spoiled this wonderful place for anyone that likes to sleep under canvas, or has children, or spoils their view. I hope the owners seriously consider abandoning their membership of this bitter and twisted organisation and look to the caravan and camping club for some inspiration. I look forward to reviewing my rating if they do.

What a fantastic stay at 68 degrees

Wow what an incredible view to wake up to in the morning!! Mind blowing! The facilities are fantastic and SO clean! You can tell that the owners care about their business because they make every effort to make you feel welcome and make it a lovely place to be! I would highly recommend it!! There is also a lovely walk over the hill that you can see from your pitch into Beacon

Can’t wait to come back

Awesome glamping experience. Our pod was incredibly comfortable and warm. Gorgeous views. Beautifully maintained site. Never been somewhere where the showers and toilets are so fabulously clean and non-scuzzy. Can’t recommend highly enough.

This was our first glamping experience and wow it was amazing, pod was spotlessly clean and so cosy hot tub was fab with breathtaking views, owners Rachel and Lewis are so friendly and helpful I highly recommend this little site and will definitely be back 😀

Fabulous getaway

Just stayed in one of the smaller pods for two nights. Little kitchenette well-equipped and bed comfy. Spotlessly clean showers and toilets right next door to our pod. Well tended grounds. Friendly staff. Truly lovely views over the Beacons. Lots to do nearby. Wish we could've stayed longer. Recommended+++.

A relaxing stay in a beautiful setting

This was a first experience of glamping for my wife and me and it could not have been better. The hills all around provide the site with a lovely backdrop. The pods, the toilet block and showers were all spotlessly clean, whilst Rebecca and Lewis, who run the site could not have been more helpful and friendly. They were unlucky enough to have to deal with a blockage in the water supply whilst we were there, but they handled it quickly and efficiently. The site is close by Cradoc Golf Club which looked to be a lovely course; the food there is excellent and they seem keen to welcome visitors. All in all a perfect break for us and one we hope to repeat.

Perfect Pod!

The pod was perfect for our weekend break in Wales. It has everything you need as well as amazing views! The hot tub was the cleanest I’ve ever had when I’ve been away. The shower block is also very clean and well equipped. Basically - the owners have created a superb glamping experience and they are also very friendly and helpful. There are lots of places to eat out - although the pod kitchen is well equipped. Loads of beautiful walks in the area as well as mountain biking, horse riding or boating on the canal. We had a fab time and will be back. Maybe in the winter so we can use the log burner!

Perfect spot with great facilities

We had a fabulous few days at this immaculate little site. We hired a pod and were able to pitch our tent right in front of it (as we were a group of 6). As the weather wasn’t great the pod was invaluable and we loved the hot tub especially in the rain. The pod is small but really well equipped and cosy and the loos and showers were also immaculate with plenty of hot water, we really appreciated the shower gel, shampoo and conditioner that were provided. Rachel and Lewis were helpful from beginning to end and the local farmer delivers fresh eggs within minute of texting! We had some great walks and played a lot of cards when it was raining. Brecon nearby has everything you need. The fridge provided was very small, I was glad I had brought a camping fridge too but we seemed to be the only people who stayed for more than a day or two.

Lovely spot, nice facilities

Lovely location with great view, facilities were nice and new and well kept. 10min drive from Brecon for any essentials. The couple running the site couldn’t have been friendlier. We were camping and there wasn’t anywhere really flat to pitch our tents in the camping field. But that’s the only gripe, otherwise I’d heartily endorse 68 degrees!

Perfect location and an amazing pod!

Very friendly hosts on arrival. Showed us around the pod and how the hot tub worked etc. Beautiful location, could have stood there all weekend just taking it in. Will defo be coming back soon!

Perfect escape from city life

The location is just perfect, with Brecon not far away when we needed things. The Black Mountain Pemberton Pod is very spacious but cosy at the same time and the wood burner was lovely. The hot tub was very welcome after a walk up Pen y Fan! So much to do and not enough time to do it, we will definitely be back.

Amazing location and incredible customer care and service!

From the minute you arrive you get a very warm welcome and nothing is too much trouble. The pods are so comfortable and equipped well. The hot tub was a huge hit! They are the best shower block we have seen on a camp site and equipped with everything you need. We just sat back, relaxed and enjoyed the view.

A Breathtaking Retreat

We recently stayed in the “Y Cwtch” Pod and from start to finish it was genuinely one of the best mini breaks (if not the best) that we have ever been on together. With a hectic start to the year, a stay amongst the stunning Brecon Beacons was exactly what we needed. The site is located in what has to be one of the most picturesque locations in Wales and also has immaculately clean washing facilities. The pod itself was cute, clean and very practical and would easily sleep a family of four. We also enjoyed soaking in the Y Cwtch Jacuzzi, especially after walking up Pen Y Fan the one day. The patio area was also a great size and even though “Y Cwtch” is one of the smaller pods it still felt spacious and great bolthole to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. There is also a golf course located next to the site that has a lovely restaurant with a great menu, plus Brecon town is literally a few minutes away in the car. Lewis and Rachel (The Owners) were also fantastic and made the whole experience of stay at 68 Degrees West one to remember! Overall, we had the most perfect stay and we are already seriously thinking about when to come back, it’s the type of place that no matter what the weather is like you will no doubt have the best time soaking up the views and atmosphere.

Beautiful view and fab toilets/showers.

This is such a sweet wee campsite. Well hidden away and the view from the place is just incredible. Doesn't seem to ever get too busy which gives you plenty of privacy and breathing space. The toilets and showers were the cleanest I've ever seen and in great condition too. I would 10/10 recommend and hope to be back soon. Thank you!

Lovely scenery -- and jacuzzi

We had a restful two nights in one of the new glamping pods, ours had a wc in the pod and a nice new Jacuzzi hot tub outside! (check to see what you are booking as there are differences between the five pods) It was great to sit in the tub and enjoy sunset views of the Brecon Beacons below. The owners, a young couple, were friendly and helpful. Recommended!

Great location with new facilities

We stayed at 68 Degrees West over Easter and had a 10/10 experience. The host was so nice and helpful and let us use one of the fire pits. All new facilities with everything you needed (even shampoo etc in the showers). Really gorgeous views of Brecon Beacons and right next to a golf club which my husband loved for a quick round one evening. Not too busy at all and the 'glamping pods' looked very cool, even though we were just staying in our camper.

We stayed here for my partners birthday. We stayed in one of the pods which had everything in there then you would need including a little torch and a USB port. The pod was spotlessly clean on arrival. The toilet block is one of the best I’ve ever used on a campsite, these were again spotlessly clean and even had shampoo/ conditioner & shower body wash for you to use. If you looking for a nice and relaxing break then do not hesitate to give this little gem a go! I for definitely be coming back here! 💕

The neatest and cleanest campsite I have ever been to!

That really is the neatest and cleanest campsite I have ever been to. The pods have everything needed you could think of including such fancy things as built-in USB charger on the wall and little hand torch which is always at hand if you need it. Not to mention full set of pots, cutlery and even wine glasses. The facilities are great too. The owners are very helpful and responsive, but since all is where it should be you don't really need to bother them. The views are perfect and it is just 15 minutes drive from where you can start climbing Pen y Fan.

Stunning location

One of the most beautifully located sites Ive ever visited. Perched up on the side of the valley, you have uninterrupted views of the brecon beacons and more. Nicely laid out site with perfect grass. New facilities are, without exaggeration, simply immaculate. Warm, clinically clean and modern. Owners clearly take great pride in their site. Good walking straight from the site and ever so peaceful. Local farmer was also very friendly, pointing us in the right direction for the path when we looked lost. We only stayed one night as a stopover but it was a great end to the holiday and would have loved to spend another day or two. We took a camper van, and as novices I would only observe that there were no obvious facilities for washing up or emptying toilets/waste tanks etc (it is a CL site so not unusual and not a problem for us - maybe i didn't look carefully enough). If campervanning, bring chocks as its slightly sloping (not excessively though) However, I happily trade all of that stuff for the perfect views and clean facilities that we found here. Highly recommended. (Also, if you play golf, which sadly i don't, I cant imagine a better placed site - there is a course right next door but it in no way impacts on the serenity of the site if its not your thing!).
