An idyllic, wooded, Wye Valley escape, offering glamping pods, a treehouse and traditional camping, all equidistant from Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons

Set between two spellbinding valleys – the Elan and the Wye – Celtic Woodland Holidays enjoys a peerless position amongst Wales' most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Just outside the historic Wyeside town of Builth Wells, it's the perfect base for outdoor adventurists with Snowdonia to the north, the Brecon Beacons to the south, and the Cambrian Mountains and Cardigan Bay a little to the west. Then again, once you settle in to your luxury off-grid digs at this tranquil woodland retreat, you might not venture far after all...

The five pods that comprise the bulk of the lodgings here are enterprising host Leigh's own patented design. Christened the moduLog, these unique timber-built pods owe as much to treehouses as they do to wooden cabins, blending seamlessly in the sylvan surroundings. Constructed from locally sourced timber, each occupies its own elevated and secluded woodland clearing. Low-impact features such as sheep’s wool insulation and solar power (with enough juice to power the, frankly redundant, television and DVD player) are in keeping with the site's all-round eco-friendly credentials. Interior features include a wood-burning stove atop a slate hearth, a beautifully finished kitchen space (utensils included), and box seating with in-built storage that convert into comfy beds. Unlike the more commonplace pod designs, these canny cabins offer a far more welcoming space to unwind, with light pouring in through the French windows and a spacious porch for guests to enjoy al fresco dining and exceptional sunsets across the Wye Valley.

For those larger family getaways, the newly constructed treehouse happily hosts up to six guests, with separate double and twin rooms, plus a sofa bed in its spacious lounge. And for those who prefer their camping the proper way, a scattering of all-weather woodland pitches have been carved out in the forest. Made from artificial grass, they comfortably accommodate a family-sized four berth tent, and each has a raised barbecue and picnic bench.

It's the little extra touches that really elevate the experience here. Like the facilities hub you can call into for a hot shower a game of air hockey. Or the charming onsite shop stocking everything from torches and bedding packs, to locally-reared sausages and homemade cakes. Or the ingeniously up-cycled tractor tyres put to use as help-yourself-herb gardens – perfect for enlivening your dinner in the wood-fired pizza oven. In 2019, Leigh even added a wood-fired sauna and a cold-water plunge shower, which combine for an exhilarating wellness experience in the great outdoors. Not that it's all fancy dining and pampering. Nippers can really let their imaginations run wild here, too, making the most of the enchanting woodland setting. Get them to see what wildlife they can spot on the kilometre-long woodland trail, or see who triumphs in the fairy door hunt.

Absolutely amazing!!!

My twin sister and I have stayed at Celtic Woodland Holidays a few times. We had the opportunity to take our family and friends there. Our experience was out of this world! We really enjoyed every second throughout our stay there and we highly recommend it to everyone. The place is extremely clean and sophisticated.

Amazing forrest camping experience

When we arrived we were greeted very warmly and shown around all the camp site facilities everything is clean and well kept it has a fully equipped kitchen which everyone is free to use so no need for camping stoves if you don't have one, the hub is fab for the kids or for all the family to relax on a comfy sofa. Our 8 year old son loved it exploring playing in the woods or the park. It has a small shop were the owners trust you to put the money for things in a honesty box , I would definitely recommend this site 4 days wasn't enough hopefully we will go for a full week next time. Thanks for a fab weekend away :)

lovely treehouse!

We stayed in the treehouse and had a lovely exerpience! The treehouse is much bigger than the photo's suggest! There are 3 different chambers connected by stairs! 2 of them are the sleeping rooms (the highest one is around 5m above the ground!) and the biggest one is the living area. Our kids just loved running around the different floors! evry floor has his own small deck and you reallu are between the trees! There is no running water, but we could collect water from the communal tab. So we still had a camping feeling, which we enjoyed! The only consideration we have is that the beds are really small. The double bed looked more like a single bed and the single beds really don't fit an adult. So one of us ended sleeping on the sofa... But overall a very nice and extraordinary expercience!

We spent a long weekend camping on the all weather sites. The actual pitch is very well crafted with raised pitches surfaced with artificial grass. Each sight also has a very nicely built wooden table and BBQ area. The main building is nearby and more like a lodge inside than a camp sight. Everything was always clean and there is a surprising amount of equipment for shared use. The hub / entertainment area is also very nicely finished. The town is also within walking distance yet you feel remote at all times. No complaints, had a great weekend. other than some pitches might be a but close to each other for some tastes.

Fantastic family retreat!

We booked a group of 17 people and 4 dogs to camp/ stay in the lodges over the bank holiday. It was perfect! Very private and spacious with 2 fantastic communal fire pit. We had 7 children with us between the ages of 3 years and 12 years and, not once did I hear the phrase “I’m bored” the park/ play room and woodland area have them plenty to explore. The communal BBQ / pizza oven area was large enough to fit 17 to all cook and sit together and the campsite is perfectly lit at night with fairy lights. The showers/ toilet / kitchen area facilities where extremely clean. And the on-site shop was small but equipt with lots of useful and lovely things! The local area is beautiful with plenty of walks and pubs to eat during and be merry! We are already wanting to book again for next year! Thank you x

A fantastic woodland retreat

We have just returned from a lovely weekend at Celtic Woodland Holidays. We stayed in Bedw and loved it, the cabin is cosy with fantastic views and afternoon sun on the decking. The campsite has everything you need, great facilities; very clean and well kept. The hosts are very helpful and friendly, we even made friends with Doris and Minnie (the campsite dogs). All in all, we had a fantastic weekend and couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Clean, quiet, family friendly, with amazing views!

This is a small, very welcoming family-run campsite with by far the cleanest toilets and showers I've ever seen in a campground! We stayed in the Bedw pod, and enjoyed the afternoon sun on the balcony each day - gorgeous view! Highly recommend.
