Riverside camping and glamping with canoes for hire

There’s something almost continental about Digeddi Wildlife Camping. When the sun’s out and your down on the riverside beach with sausages on the BBQ you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in the middle of France. Canoes are pulled up on the smooth, grey pebbles and the water flows quietly by. It’s not long before you’re in for a swim.

There are, however, some tell-tale signs of Britain. In the large, gently sloping meadow behind, shire horses chomp their way through the grass, while, around, the oak trees and woodland that cover the Wye Valley are a truly native scene. The temperature is normally a little lower than the south of France, too, but a good campfire can easily sort that problem out. This is proper camping after all.

The camping itself is very much of the traditional kind. There’s room for 20 pitches but, as a result, it’s rarely full and there’s plenty of space. Suzie will help you find the perfect pitch on the site.

Glamping is also an option here for those seeking a little more comfort. A bow top gypsy wagon, traditionally painted and parked at the top of the meadow, sleeps two, and there’s a larger, French-style Roulotte that can sleep two. Both have everything needed, so you can simply arrive with a little food and a toothbrush.

The real highlight of the campsite, however, is the location. Like Digeddi, many sites in the area boast footpaths on their doorstep, but few also have such easy access to the River Wye. You can hire canoes and drift gently downstream or follow it upstream, on foot, to the famous book town of Hay-on-Wye. Indeed, you could easily spend you entire holiday here and never use your car. The town has enough to keep you busy for several days, while walking and canoeing can fill the rest

Digeddi welcomes a new venture for 2022 adding more diversity for our avid campers. Not got your own tent? Digeddi has got you covered. They now provide 2 Bell Tents, Otters Way and The Kingfisher, in a prime tranquil and idyllic spot on the grounds of Digeddi, River view and panoramic picture perfect spots. Escape from the noise of the city, to our prime location. Sit back and relax by an open ground fire, stoke up the BBQ and take in all the nature that awaits you and as night falls gaze into the sky and take in the amazing view of the moon and the stars. The new bell tents are a simple yet  perfect place for a weekend or mid-week getaway.

Grass Camping pitch
Like wild camping - with permission
What a great site! Pitches are huge, there are amazing river views, space to kayak and paddleboard from site and you’re left to your own devices to make the most of your weekend. The staff are super friendly, fires are allowed and you can even get a firewood delivery. We’ll be back next year.

Grass Camping pitch
Lovely quiet site with fantastic access to the river for our paddle board. Plenty of space for the dog to enjoy (on a lead) and in striking distance of Offas Dyke and the Beacons

Grass Camping pitch
Great find.
Our pitch by the river was beautifully kept, grass cut and clean. Loved the space around us, uncrowded. Suzi was most helpful. The facilities were somewhat basic but that did not detract from the uniqueness of the surroundings. Would love to return.

Nearby attractions

Footpaths and bridleways aren't hard to come by around here and, if you're not paddling on the river (see on site), hitting the trails is a great option. The famous Offa's Dyke (01547 528753) route passes nearby (it goes via Hay-on-Wye) and the Hay Bluff and Black Mountains make for excellent walking. In town, Hay Castle is well worth a visit and hours can be spent nosing around the independent shops and cafés – particularly book and antiques shops. It's worth beginning at the central tourist office (01497 820144). It's a 15-minute drive to Brecon and the Brecon Beacons National Park – climb Pen y Fan – and a 30-minute drive to Llanthony Priory (01873 890487), a ruined Augustinian Priory in the beautiful Vale of Ewyas. Entry is free and it, too, is surrounded by many great walking routes, including Offa's Dyke.

Food and drink

It's 2 miles to Hay-on-Wye where there are plenty of options. There are delis and small shops within the town, as well as a Co-Op supermarket just outside. There are 3 pubs – The Blue Boar (01497 820884), Edwardian Kilverts Inn (01497 821042) right in the middle of town and The Three Tuns (01497 821855), a fabulous 16th-century pub with low beams, real ales on tap and a convivial atmosphere.
