About Gwerniago

Suitable For

Nearby

Plenty of seaside activities at Borth, and the visitor centre there (01970 871174) is staffed by friendly ladies. The pebbly beach is great when the weather’s nice. It’s a good spot for low-key surfing, and in summer there are lifeguards. Down the coast is Newquay, with daily cruises to spot dolphins, harbour porpoises and grey Atlantic seals. North of Pennal, CAT (the Centre for Alternative Technology) (01654 705950) is popular with all ages. Grandma’s Garden (Weds & Sun only; 01654 702244), with its arboretum, sculpture park and ‘sight and light/scent and touch’ gardens is worth a visit. There’s an RSPB reserve at Eglwysfach, where you can see red kites and peregrine falcons.

Food & Drink

Try the homity pie at the CAT centre for a meal with a small carbon footprint, and if you’re in Machynlleth, the Quarry Café does local vegetarian food (01654 702624). There’s a nice little coffee shop at Borth (check) called Oriel Tir a Mor Gallery, which has a lovely upstairs room with squashy sofas if the weather is grim. Their cheese omelette makes a delicious lunch after a blustery walk on the beach. Buy dressed crabs a few doors up at Peter George, the butcher, who also does a mean line in homemade sausages. Riverside Hotel, Pennal within walking distance.

Family Friendly

Is it a pirate castle? Or a soldier's battalion? A fairy glen? Or a princess's tower? Don't tell the kids, but it's actually a rocky outcrop protruding from the camping field that they'll just love playing on. Making this the perfect place to play out a childhood dream.

Getting There

Turn right by the clock in Machynlleth, over the bridge, then immediately left. Follow that road for 2 miles on the Aberdyfi road. You will see a site sign on the left-hand side. Take that little road and the site is the first farm on the right. Take a train to Machynlleth (3 miles away from the site) then you can hop on irregular bus no. 29 (towards Tywyn), which will stop at the bottom of the lane to Gwerniago. Otherwise, take a taxi from the station.
