Gwerniago Farm, Pennal, Machynlleth, Powys SY20 9JX
What makes a perfect campsite? Quiet farmland location? Nearby beach? Friendly owners who like campfires, children and dogs?
Gwerniago Farm has all of the above and a lot more besides. Located in the pretty Dovey Valley, it’s a large field, divided by the natural boundaries of a spreading oak and rocky outcrop. The family have farmed here for three generations now, so camping here gives you a great insight into a farmer’s working life. Arrive at tea time and you might see farmer Trevor’s sheepdog herding his flock back out to their field, with Trevor opening gates ahead of them on his quad bike.
The owner's will lend you baskets for campfires, which dot the site. As wisps of smoke drift skywards and marshmallows bubble in the heat, the hustle and bustle of urban life seems a long way away; it’d be all too easy to spend several days here without feeling the need to leave the site at all.
But that might be a shame, as the beach and little harbour at Aberdyfi is less than a 15-minute drive north, and there’s also Borth to the south. There’s even a family-friendly pub in the village, within walking distance down a quiet lane.
You can’t really ask for much more than that, can you?
The Owner SaysGwerniago campsite is located in the heartland of Mid Wales, at the most southern point of the Snowdonia National Park. Gwerniago is a family run working farm run by a Welsh speaking family. The campsite is situated on the edge of Pennal village in the beautiful unspoilt Dyfi (Dovey) Valley.

We spend the 1st week of the summer holiday here and it was fantastic. My 2 sons loved the tree swing and made so many friends on site we hardly saw them. The showers and washing up facilities were to a high standard The idea that every pitch has its own picnic table was superb My parents came over for a day and have already talked about going back there themselves (dad even picked out which pitch he wanted)
Spent 3 nights here the site is well situated loved the disabled facility well thought out, except for the garden chair needed a clean the area where we put our tent up was on a small slope and muddy but that did not stop us. The staff were helpful, Easy access to the local shops within a 10 minute drive views to die for. Will be using this site again.
A nice place to stay
Have just spend 3 nights here with two of my children. The site is really very nice with plenty of benches scattered around for campers to use and a well maintained block containing toilets, showers, utility room (which included a fridge, freezes and a few spare plug sockets) and dish washing facilities (washing up liquid provided). The only think stopping me from handing out 5 stars is that a parts of the site are on a bit of a slope.
A really good, looked after campsite
We paid £12 for two of us and a small backpacker tent - this was reasonable for the location and for the quality of the facilities. The ground was generally sloping in most places, but as it was out of season there was availability wherever we liked and so we got a good spot near the facilities and a picnic bench.
The facilities are really clean with what I remember as free showers. There's a fridge room and charger point, covered outside sinks for washing up and individual toilets. The site is easy to find if you're driving, but it's a hard walk down a main road if you can't get a bus (buses are very infrequent, especially on Sundays). There is a footpath from the site through woods and #8 cycle path to Pennal where there's a lovely (Michelin-reviewed? restaurant (book in advance especially if it's Saturday!) The OS map says there's a path in the opposite direction to Machynlleth but after struggling to find it and just ending up in farmland, it seems that the path has been blocked up - get a taxi rather than walking up the road, it's a long 3 miles!
Overall, very good. Midges were barely around as the grass was good, and that's always a bonus!
We stayed here for 2 nights for a quick weekend getaway. It has to be one of the most beautiful settings for a campsite, the surrounding countryside has it all - valleys, hills, forests, meadows, fields, rivers, wildlife, horses, farm animals, wild flowers. There's a fire pit with most pitches, or you can borrow one, the reception sells eggs and gas and has leaflets for local walks/interest. Facilities are small but good, there is a main road not far away so you don't quite get complete peace and quiet, but it's not too distracting and the rest of the campsite makes up for it. Nearby Machynlleth is a fab town with lovely independent shops, many pubs and tearooms, antique and junk shops, we particularly liked the White Lion because we could take our dog in and have lunch and a taxi firm (Peter's) which was really efficient and also took our dog. We shall return!
The best campsite in North Wales
We have been here twice now this month, once the first weekend in August, and then, as we loved it so much, we came for another 6 days a week later!
A peaceful, beautiful place, where all the owners are friendly and welcoming and all the other campers respectful of each others space and tranquility.
There is no light pollution here either so as well as witnessing the amazing meteor shower a week ago, we also had an amazing view of the Milky Way.
So nice to find somewhere with so much space and privacy that allows dogs, has a fire pit with every pitch and the cleanest facilities I have ever seen on a campsite. Absolute bliss! We are returning on Friday for four days. We can't stay away!
If you like sitting round the campfire at night and making friends with hedgehogs, petting ponies, happy just to watch a gang of goats messing about or little ducklings having a splash around, then this place is for you. Love it.
A lovely place for a quiet break!
Just come back from 2 nights at Gwerniago Farm and cannot wait to return already! The campsite itself was lovely and even though there were quite a few tents with dogs and children it felt just as quiet as some of the smaller campsites we have visited. The facilities were fantastic - very clean and all free! Perfect location for exploring Snowdonia National Park. Would definitely recommend for all campers! Thank you Gwerniago Farm :)
