Fforest Fields Caravan Park

UK Wales Mid Wales Powys

Hundred House, Builth Wells, Powys LD1 5RT

An award winning Mid Wales campsite with stunning surroundings, a magical lake and acres of space to explore

Despite tents and caravans speckling the meadows and children swimming in the lake, humans tread surprisingly lightly at this 100-pitch campsite in Mid Wales. The lake may be man-made, as is the campsite, its pathways, streams and flowerbeds, but it has been done with such care and taste that even Mother Nature herself would surely give it her blessing. And if you stand in the middle of this campsite and spin around, the natural scenery that greets the eye full circle is simply breathtaking – rolling hills in every direction, forests thick with pine trees, grass, ferns, heather and crystal-clear streams... all the finest organic ingredients that make up a melting pot of countryside idyll. The best bit is that you’re free to wander off in any one of these directions, because the land (all 550 acres of it) all belongs to Fforest Fields.

There is so much walking to be done here – over the hills, through the forests and across the moorland. Maps are available at reception to guide you and there’s a six-mile waymarked walk to Aberedw village that’s well worth doing, not least because it winds up at a terrific pub. Two fishing lakes allow for more sedate activity and the long lake’s cool waters also make for refreshing swimming or canoeing in one of the site’s kayaks. So the chance to commune with nature is at an all-time high. In fact, not far away, at Gigrin Farm in Rhayader, there’s also a red kite feeding centre, where you can get up close and personal with these majestic birds of prey.

While nature abounds, there are plenty of opportunities for the human spirit to shine here too, not just through tree-hugging and skipping barefoot across the grass, but also through old-fashioned trust. Campers are welcome to help themselves to locally-produced food – sausages, organic milk, cheese, eggs, bread and more – and use the laundry facilities as long as they pay a contribution into an honesty box. There are fridges for all to use, homemade firepit structures you can borrow to melt marshmallows on, and games and books to keep the entertainment flowing if it happens to rain. It creates a wonderful 'share and share alike' ethos that makes for friendly, sociable camping.

The main facilities – toilets, showers, sinks and so on – are all housed in a new, timber framed building with solar panels on the rooftop and a vast amount of space inside. It’s kept warm entirely by the campsite’s own firewood and has under-floor heating throughout. The showers are excellent, cubicles large and there are separate family rooms and disabled facilities. It’s the likes of such facilities, combined with the ffine fforests and acres of natural space, that earned the place the AA’s ‘Campsite of the Year’ award for Wales in 2016. No mean feat and testament to the perfect marriage they have made between campsite and surroundings; a harmonious partnership that sees people returning year after year. One man even loved it here so much that after his first visit he came back every year, always to the same pitch, until he reached the grand old age of 85 – a Cool Camper indeed! Unusual? Perhaps. But, once you’ve visited, it’s easy to see why. Visit once and who know how many times you’ll return!

The Owner Says

Fforest Fields built a new facilities block last winter to bring all the different sheds under one roof (just check out the picture to see for yourself)!

There's a beautiful, timber framed, loo and shower building. The showers and toilets are huge! Underfloor heating keeps your toes warm and with separate family rooms and a fully dedicated disabled room the facilities can now be amongst the best in the country!

At the reception, there are fridges full of delicious local produce. Sausages from home-grown pigs, organic milk, butter, cream and cheese. Fresh orange juice, eggs, bacon, yogurts (with their own appreciation society!) and bread and rolls. If no one is about you still put your money in the honesty box.

An information room houses two freezers and two fridges for campers use, a microwave and the ever useful phone re-charging boxes.

There is a laundry, a washing up room and a wonderful, much used, drying room.

This entire eco-friendly block is heated with our very own fire wood!

Fire pits are available for hire, wood and locally made charcoal available to buy.

Stay somewhere else

Beautiful site, clean and welcoming facilities with lots of nice touches (fridge, freezer, microwave, kettle), free wifi, lots of great trails - but incredibly rude staff! Not worth coming back, not with all the lovely places to stay in Wales that treat campers respectfully.

THE best campsite so far..

We've just returned from a week in our tent which is our 3rd visit to Fforest Fields and yet again cannot find any fault with this campsite! It never fails to impress us despite the weather and I'm pretty sure we'll always come back here as we've yet to find anywhere as special. We took four children aged 14, 10, 5 and 2 and it's hard usually to find somewhere that caters for all ages. The lake provided hours of fun the older children (and ourselves!) and the little bridges and streams were perfect to keep the little ones entertained. There's so much to do locally and despite camping during the summer holidays we've never been here and felt crowded. The pitches are fab and provide plenty of space. The facilities are clean, warm showers and the family rooms are a great idea and really are useful as is the drying room for all the wetsuits etc after being in the lake. The cafe sells delicious food and gorgeous local beers and it really is a perfect haven sitting outside with the fairy lights. Despite just leaving we already cannot wait to return. There's something about the site that draws you in!

THE best campsite, EVER

Please visit and I dare you to disagree with my title. We've stayed at Fforest Fields 3 times now (and booked a few more trips for this summer already) and it is without a doubt my favourite campsite. George and Katie are so helpful and friendly - a warm welcome awaits you and nothing is too much trouble. He jumpstarted my car when I accidentally let my battery go flat and they are always on hand if you need anything - like lending a kayak to go on the lake or hiring you a firepit so you can toast marshmallows.

The dogs sink into a deep depression when we leave Fforest Fields because it is SO amazing! (for kids alike) Acres of fields to explore and play and LOADS of forest tracks and walks from the campsite ranging from short to a few miles...it really is perfect. Super spacious pitches, a shower and toilet block you could operate in it's so clean and the café serves delicious breakfast, snacks and drinks, plus a shop with an honesty box for any extras you might forget!

If you can manage to tear yourself away from the idyllic campsite, there's some great walking to be had at the Elan Valley (30 min drive away). This is our go-to campsite for every trip and definitely tops my list. Outstanding!

:-(

My husband and I stayed at this campsite in October this year. We queried the cost of the 'Bell Tent' price as it appeared that we were being quoted the summer price. The price was duly adjusted, but was still £10 more per night than was advertised (although I notice that their prices have changed again since we stayed there) We booked and paid for in full, one of the Bell Tents. We were extremely disappointed. The tent was covered in mould and smelled awful. The bedding, however was clean. We made the best of it, but we were disturbed on both nights by a group of extremely noisy women who were camping next to us. It was so bad on the last night that my husband actually shouted at them to be quiet.

We complained, and although the response was that complaints are taken seriously, no recompense was offered and my last email did not even receive a reply.

Fabulous site

What a brilliant campsite with every facility you'd ever need (and desire)! Acres of space and never felt too busy even during school holidays (we visited in late July). Very friendly environment and the owners Katie and George are extremely helpful and nice with everything. Having the well-stocked shop open with an honesty box really sums up the completely chilled out attitude at the site. Showers and other facilities were brand new and spotless. Pizza nights and Thai food on two days of the week were superb.

Overall a fantastic experience and we'd be certainly going back if camping in the same area again.

Beautiful Friendly site

Enjoyed our two night stay by tricking stream.  Very friendly staff, beautiful site and surroundings.  Very good, clean and thoughtful facilities for campers such as ability to charge mobiles, large clean freezers and fridges.  My partners first camping trip and he was charmed : )

Best site

This has been the cleanest campsites we have ever stayed on. The toilet and shower block had not long been completed and they were sparkling clean. Showers are really big so plenty of room to shower and dry yourself and a mop there to dry off the floor when you finished, cloths by the sinks got people to clean up after themselves rather than leave a horrible mess. Walked to the local pub and made some new friends, next time we will do the longer walk to the other pub!

Great Campsite, Only one downside

I have to say the campsite is absolutely brilliant, the showers and toilets are spacious and clean and the campsite is generally clean, pleasant to be in and is great fun!

However, I have one thing to complain about - on arriving at the campsite we were greeted by a completely unecessarily rude lady who obviously worked at the campsite. We had found the people on the campsite that we were looking for and were just having a short conversation before sorting things out when we were greeted in a very hostile manner. We were told off for not reporting to reception when to be perfectly honest we had no idea that we had to - whilst calmly explaining this to her and after being accused of 'hurtling' around the campsite and being called 'missy' she even threatened us to have an argument with the campsite manager - I should have said there and then that yes. I would like a discussion with the manager about how completely rude this lady was being. She also, I had noticed would stand by the office window and take pictures of things through the window as if trying to catch people out... maybe it was her way of keeping order around the campsite but all of this was completely unecessary.

Dont get me wrong, I had a lovely week and the facilities and campsite are great but to be honest that one encounter has put me off due to the sheer rudeness of the greeting that we recieved within the first minute of arriving at the campsite!

A little piece of heaven in the Valleys

We have just come back from a 10 day stay at Fforest Fields and we literally had to drag the boys away. Fabulous place, and the friendliest campsite we have ever stayed on in the UK. It was picturesque with extremely clean facilities and a lovely little shop with essential ingredients. We mostly saw George and Will around the site, working hard, and they were always helpful and friendly. The boys ran off and found friends to play with each day, and I actually managed to read a book for the first time in years. It you are looking for a place with a timetable of activities and a late night bar, then this is not the place for you. If, however, you want somewhere family friendly, in a beautiful setting where you can walk and swim / canoe in the lake at your leisure, as well as explore other parts of Wales from a central location (we headed over to Aberystwyth, Abergavenny, Brecon, Dolaucothi Gold Mines...), then this is the place for you.

Great Weekend

Just come back from a great two night stay. owners friendly, other campers friendly, great views & scenery, walking to the top the ridge and watching birds of prey fly beneath us was magical. Ice cream from reception a bit special too (try the salted caramel).

Perfect!

This site is amazing, so well managed, beautiful location and really clean and well designed facilities.

We stayed for 2 nights at the end of May half term and really didn't want to leave. The kids (4&6) spent a lot of time paddling in the stream and playing with newly made friends. Free kayak hire is also a great pass time as are the walks directly from the site.  The showers, loos and sinks are clean, spacious and definitely the best I've ever seen on a campsite.

I recommend this site to anyone, and we can't wait to go back as soon as we get the chance :-)

Fantastic site

What a brilliant weekend, the facilities are perfect and some of the cleanest we have ever found on a site.

We had our pitch for two nights and enjoyed every minute. The site is easy to find and access is excellent, tucked away with beautiful walks and views.

I would definitely recommend this site to anyone looking for a quiet weekend or week away......

Fabulous Fforest Fields

I can't recall the last time we returned feeling so relaxed from a camping holiday and that was despite the rain and the car breaking down. The site owners have created an oasis of calm, restorative tranquility, and everything you could need to make this an ideal camping destination. The kids loved the lake, riding round on their bikes, fishing out tadpoles and climbing trees. The dog has gone into a deep depression now home, no doubt missing the endless walks she enjoyed from the site.  Lovely location, the kindest owners and a night time feast of stars and silent appreciation. Loved it.

Ffantastic Fforest Fields!

There are not enough superlatives to extol the virtues of this magical and idyllic place. A spur of the moment break 20+ years ago has turned into eagerly anticipated sojourns as often as we can every year. The scenery, the freedom, sipping a glass of our favourite tipple whilst watching the swallows as they swoop and fly around the site at sunset and the unrivalled warm welcome from The Barstow Family. The whole Fforest experience is magical, idyllic, unique and unsurpassed. Camping (and indeed life) doesn't get better than this!

Fforest Fields Caravan Park

We came to Fforest Fields intending to stay a few days and ended up staying there for 2 weeks. We could happily have stayed a lot longer! It's a very special place and if there's another site as magical as this anywhere in the UK, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

The facilities are 5* - lovely, spacious, hot showers in a heated block, laundry room, drying room, facility room with freezers and microwave, excellent facilities for families and disabled visitors too. Essentials such as milk and bread are for sale in the reception office and there's an honesty box for payments. There are all sorts of thoughtful little details, too, such as rings where you can tie up your dog while you pop to the loo.

The site is beautifully landscaped, with ponds and little streams running through it, trees here and there, a feeding station for birds, and pitches are generous and uncrowded.

TV, phone and MiFi signals were all strong - I think this is the only site we've been on where we got all three inside our motorhome! Usually we have to wander around dejectedly in the rain trying to get a phone signal, but not here.

Then there's the setting - spectacular! Hills and low mountains all around, fields lower down and open land up on the mountain tops. Lots of woodland too, and dozens of footpaths and trails to explore - some steep and demanding, others offering gentle strolls through this lovely landscape. Waterfalls tumble over rocky drops and there are ancient mossy trees mixed in among the larches (which are gradually being removed and replaced with mostly deciduous trees). It's a birders paradise - red kites, buzzards, ravens, snipe, curlews, woodcock, and we think we heard a long-eared owl in the woods. Brilliant.

If you like walking, mountain-biking or road cycling, birding, wildlife spotting, landscape and wildlife photography, or just chilling out in beautiful surroundings, this is the place for you. There's even a lake on site where you can borrow kayaks (refundable deposit) to paddle around, or swim in warmer weather.

It's heaven for dogs with endless wonderful walks and a field where they can run around off-lead. I think my dog actually cried when we left!

It's a family-run site and the friendliest site we've stayed on so far - the people are as lovely as the place.

Just a fantastic place. We loved it, and we'll be back one day.

Fforest Fields Caravan Park

Beautiful, idyllic campsite in fabulous location. The updated (opened last year) shower block provides lovely hot showers, laundry, washing up etc as well as fridges, freezers and electricity points for charging phones etc. The site is well maintained and pitches are large, with some all weather pitches and EHU if needed. There are also lovely walks around the site and swimming in the lake. A really special place with friendly, welcoming owners.

Fforest Fields Caravan Park

Fforest Fields has everything a camper expects when visiting the wild Welsh countryside - hills, views, sheep, wind and friendly characters.

We spent a relaxing weekend here early last year and my in-laws (life long campers) have been consistently returning ever since. The panoramic views of the surrounding hills and fields are truly spectacular, as is the constant sitings of Red Kites and other birds of prey.

The campsite is surrounded by footpaths which will lure you to explore the hills and wooded areas, these range from gentle to moderate hillwalking. The campsite area is well maintained and expansive. The border hedges and various camping areas help making privacy possible if required.

The boating lake is rather small for any grand canoe exploration trips but great for kids who can take small boats out in relative safety.

Toilets/shower blocks are simple and clean. Friendly and helpful owners who employ a common sense policy instead of copious amounts of rules.

Overall very nice campsite in a handy location. Planning to visit again sometime this year.

Fforest Fields Caravan Park

High time to write a review over this beautiful campsite. When we first booked here, we were charmed by the promissing website, so we thought maybe our expectations might be to high. But from day one we felt at home after a warm welcome and enjoyed the beautiful scenery, the great space and diversity of nature on the site. The owners are very helpful and take good care of their campsite and nature all around, so they expect the same from you. Children of all ages are enjoying themselves in all kinds of weather, playing foot, canoeing or swimming in the pond, exploring the little stream (with shallow ponds) that runs through the site. You can start great walks directly from the campsite. This is a rather large campsite, but still you won’t feel overcrowded because of the many trees and hedges full of wildlife and the large pitches, some of them allweatherpitches. Plenty of hot water in the showers, a well equiped laundry and washing up room, fridge and freezer at the reception, and a small stock of basic supplies. So all is there to have a fine stay in a friendly atmosphere and stunning landscape.
