Two camping pitches and a small handful of glamping options nestled on the banks of the River Teifi

A shingle bank on the opposite side of the Teifi makes the perfect spot to practice your skimming at Henfryn Farm. Weedy, wild grasses sprout from the surface like tufts of natural hair and the choice of fine, flat stones mean those in the know have ample choice on offer. Pick up your chosen cobble, place it flatly in your palm and send it out across the river, skipping along the water until it plops delicately beneath the surface. With enough practice you could even enter yourself into the Welsh Open Skimming Championships around an hours drive away. The winner is given his own special pebble and crowned the Welsh Champion Tosser – though, we’re not sure whether that’s a title to strive for or not.

Tucked down the rural lanes of West Wales, the simple pleasure of sitting in your deck chair as the kids skim stones in the sun is just one of many dreamy scenarios at this small-scale, organic farm. Home to a herd of traditional Hereford-cross cattle and fluffy Llanwenog sheep, Henfryn Farm is the sort of effortlessly attractive place that has little in the way of man-made attractions, yet somehow provides endless fun for all the family. The surrounding landscape is riddled with excellent footpaths to explore, while the aforementioned river – languid and inviting – is also perfect for boating and dabbling along the edges (though the bank closest to the bell tents is steep so kids should be careful). The two farm dogs are friendly and playful and the organic status of the farm, including adjoining acres of SSSI landscape, mean wildlife is bountiful.

The site itself is made up of just two secluded camping pitches, a trio of fully furnished bell tents, a family-sized safari tent and a shepherd’s hut with a built in bed, kitchen area and wood burning stove. All the glamping structures are dotted around in their own private spaces – one bell tent overlooks an open hay meadow, another is directly on the riverside – and, though entirely off-grid, the homely abodes are kitted out with comforts in mind. There is a double bed in each bell tent, accompanied by either a double futon or a pair of inflatable beds. Along with bedding and linen, they also include wood-burning stoves for cooler evenings, plus all the pots, pans and crockery you need for cooking up some fresh meat bought from the farm shop.

The more adventurous, of course, bring their own tents along and try cooking over the open campfire – fires are an encouraged part of the outdoor experience here. To top it off, you can enjoy your molten marshmallows with a bottle of the farm’s own home-brewed cider, made with apples from the orchards around the campsite. A homemade treat at a homely little campsite. We’ll cheers to that.

No cars are allowed next to the tents and they are situated down a steep track from the parking area, but wheelbarrows are provided for carrying your things. Each bell/safari tent has a cool box, crockery, cutlery, pans, private outdoor kitchen shelter, fire pit/BBQ and a wood-burning stove. There are 2 shared compost loos, showers and washing up points near the tents. In the communal barn in the yard there is a fridge, freezer, kettle, microwave, washing machine and space to charge mobile phones. Bedding and bath towels are provided in the bell tents, safari tent and shepherd's hut. There is an initial bag of logs provided with each glamping booking, more can be purchased. Paddle in the river, walk the farm, collect eggs, see otters (maybe!) and meet the pair of very friendly farm dogs.

Suitable For

Glampers, campers, tents, couples, families, exclusive hire of whole site – yes. Campervans, caravans, large single-sex groups – no. Dogs may be allowed by prior arrangement, please discuss this with the site prior to booking.

When you’ve had enough of the farm’s peace and tranquillity or just need remind yourself that there is more to West Wales than Henfryn there is plenty to do nearby. The Ceredigion coast is a short drive away with lots of stunning beaches as well as the coastal path. Mountain biking, horse riding, walking and boat trips can all be arranged a short distance from the farm. There are plenty of canoe, kayak or sailing options nearby too. Out and about there are the market towns of Newcastle Emlyn, Llandysul, Lampeter and Cardigan as well as attractions such as the National Botanic Gardens of Wales (01558 667149), The National Wool Museum (029 2057 3070), Cilgerran Wildlife Centre (01239 621212) and the Gwili Steam Railway (01267 238213) to name a few.

Food & Drink

Locally-produced sausages and bacon, eggs from the farm, steaks and mince and sometimes burgers from the farm's own cattle are all available on site. And the best bit? The farm's own home-made cider available! Its around a 10-minute drive to the particularly recommended Daffodil (01559 370343) in Penrwillan and The Belle (01570 480495) at Llanlwnii, both of which are well worth the drive, also the traditional Nags Head pub in Abercych (01239 841200). If you are a pizza fan we recommend a trip to Pizza Tipi (01239 612259) in Cardigan. There is a small shop in the village and a CK's supermarket 5 minutes’ drive away for gathering some camp-cooking goods.

Mid April–end ofSeptember (though the shepherd's hut is open all year).

Getting There

The postcode SA44 5BB brings you right down the campsite lane but then stops at their neighbours, keep driving and you will come into the yard. When coming from the West you will come into Pentrecwrt on the A486, as you drop down into the village you take the first left on the B4335. You will come past the Black Horse pub on your right and then a little further, the Plas Parka Pub. Turn 2nd left just after the pub, this is a single track lane tucked in between a hedge and a white house, not the bigger road which is 1st after the pub. If coming from other directions you will likely join the A486 at Llandysul, follow the signs to Pentrecwrt and take the first right onto the B4335 and follow the directions as above.

The nearest trains are at Carmarthen station and from there a taxi to the farm takes about 30 minutes. Limited bus transport.

We really enjoyed our stay. The bell tent was lovely and we really like there was a small area with a table, chairs and kitchen. This was perfect when it rained we could still all eat together and it allowed us to put our little to bed in the tent and still stay up with out disturbing her. We would love to go back again, loved being up in the field and still had access to the river. Tom and Ruth were very helpful and a joy to meet. There was a beach not to far away and many things to explore near by. Would highly recommend if you want to chill in nature listen to the owls at night and have a lovely camp fire under the stars. Thank you Tom and Ruth for a lovely holiday.

Beautiful...Picturesque...Totally relaxing

Just back from a weekend at Henfryn Farm. Will definitely be returning. We stayed in the Shepherds hut which is just stunning and with the new bathroom facilities; it is perfect. The hot tub was lovely to relax in, in the evening. And the fire pit is great for cooking the food we bought from the farm. The family are so welcoming and very friendly to deal with. A definite must for a nice chilled weekend

Lovely peaceful place

We had a gorgeous weekend at Henfryn Farm with our two young sons over Easter bank holiday. Unfortunately our car broke down on the way and Rob very kindly came to help us out so we still made the trip. The whole farm is a peaceful tranquil place with great facilities for a family. We staying in the Onnen bell tent which was lovely. Beds were great and the log burner was great on a cold April morning. The kitchen , toilet and shower were spotlessly clean and all worked great. Being able to buy wood, eggs, meat, cider on farm was a bonus as we couldn’t get off site due to car trouble. The river running down below the farm was lovely and the kids really enjoyed paddling in it. Rob and Mhairi were brilliant hosts , approachable and kind. Will definitely return. Highly recommended.

Response from Henfryn Farm

Hi Kelly, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review, being a small family business it means a lot :-) I hope your car is now sorted out, not the best start to your stay, but lovely to hear you were still able to relax and enjoy your time here. Hopefully see you again soon. Mhairi

Great place to rest, enjoy the surroundings, all up to great standards. Is just gorgeous... We stayed in the commanders caravan and love it! Perfect get away from the city. The hot tub is dreamy and the caravan give you the privacy you need. The owners above expectations to make sure your stay is fabulous.

Romantic riverside glamping!

A true hidden gem (be careful you don't miss the secluded lane that leads to the farm!), Henfryn Farm is one of our favourite spots in all of Wales. If you're looking to get away from it all, the bell tent in the lower field is the pick of the pitches. Cosy and clean, the spacious bell sits atop wooden decking and comes complete with a firepit. The expansive views over lush fields and the beautiful River Teifi are amazing. Stargazing whilst listening to the crackle of flames and the gentle ebbing of the river is one of our most memorable glamping experiences. Lovely host Mhairi ensured we didn't want for anything and the friendly farm terriers Rosie & Bramble are worth the price of admission alone! We had a sneak peek at the newest addition to the site – an amazing repurposed vintage truck-cum-shepherds hut beautifully decorated and with its very own aga. As soon as it's officially unveiled, we'll be booking our return visit!

The peacefulness

Came back from our 4th B/H annual break at Henfryn Farm on Monday. Absolutely brilliant as usual. Brand new tent, all equipment immaculate, beautiful weather & such a relaxing experience right next to the river in the bottom field as usual. Rob & Mhairi are the loveliest people & work so so hard to ensure that every single stay is perfect. The farm dogs Rosie & Bramble are just adorable & we never leave them without a stock of sausages... We’ve considered trying to sneak them home with us but the farm wouldn’t be the same without them! Already booked our next year break & have added in an extra night! Thank you Rob & Mhairi - You’re the best

Under the trees

We arrived at a traditional looking farm, chickens pecking around, cattle having a nose at us new arrivals over the top of the fence and sheep grazing in the fields. They provide wheelbarrows to carry your luggage down, though we didn't use them as was just staying one night, last weekend of their season. We had mentioned we were bringing my 5year old son, and they fixed up a fire guard around the wood stove, which soon gets the place warm. The tent itself is positioned under the trees, you could hear the wind through the leaves, lulling you to sleep, very peaceful no near neighbors only the wildlife. Good selection of pans, wine glasses, glasses, cups, cutlery, very tasty hot chocolate too. The double bed was very comfy and snuggled under the blankets, we; my childhood friend, my son and I all slept in the double, plenty of room, though there is a sofa bed too.

Throughly recommend here, organic farm that produces eggs, beef and lamb when available. Looking forward to next year.. Oh and lovely hot showers too 😀
