We collected eggs, cuddled cows, swam in the sea and sat out under the stars. Lovely.

Yurts. Just a few short years ago they were a rare breed in the Welsh countryside, an exotic novelty. Now, suddenly, they’re everywhere.

But it should be noted that not all yurts are equal. While many outfits are reputable and well-run, there are also those yurts propped up in fields/back-gardens/allotments operated by charlatans who don’t really know what they’re doing and just want to make a quick buck. You have been warned. Thankfully, at the Yurt Farm, Thea and Laurie know what they’re doing. And they do it very well. This place hasn’t been thrown together, it’s been thought through, planned out, then nurtured and loved into existence. Breathing new life into a forgotten corner of a large organic farm in Ceredigion, this collection of five yurts is less about the accommodation itself and more about the fully immersing experience of this off-beat, off-grid, off-the-beaten-track hideaway.

A spacious hay meadow gives each yurt as much room as some other campsites might give 30 tents. The yurts are warm and cosy, not to mention impeccably well-maintained, as is the railway carriage which sits on a separate natural bench with lovely views of the Cambrian Mountains. The location of this glampsite is perfect; ridiculously remote and enveloped in the sort of rich, green countryside for which Wales is famous. And the love is evident everywhere; a welcome basket of tasty veg for guests; unique four-poster beds fashioned out of trees; wheelbarrows on hand for transporting your gear (vehicles are not allowed on site).

There’s a cosy communal wood cabin with cooking facilities, tables, chairs and board games for rainy days, as well as the wherewithal to make a cup of tea. However, most of the glamping time will no doubt be spent outdoors, with so much space to fill on the farm. In all, there are 150 acres to be discovered, criss-crossed by a network of farm trails and children are free to explore, make dens, hide in the long grass, play in the sand, hang off rope swings, collect eggs, be licked by cows and gorge themselves silly on the blackcurrants and gooseberries that grow in the yurt meadow.

With the striking Cambrian mountains as a backdrop to this enchanting place, there’s no doubt this beautiful, remote location enhances the blissed-out go-slow vibe. But if it’s those quirky little yurts that bring you here in the first place, it’ll be the welcome, the hospitality and low-impact philosophy that’ll keep you coming back.

Facilities

The yurts are exceptionally well equipped with organic futons, bedding, all cooking equipment including gas hob, a basket of farm goodies, a wood-burning stove plus logs and kindling. There’s even tea- and coffeemaking facilities and a first-aid kit. Outside each yurt there’s a BBQ or fire pit and a picnic table. The cabin has a 4-ring gas hob, more cooking equipment, board games and lots of extra bits and bobs such as toasty sandwich-makers to use on the fire. Next door is the compost loo and solar shower. There’s also a sand-pit, swing, a woodshed yurt for extra firewood and an ‘honesty’ farm shop with meat, veg and jam for sale.

Nearby

One of the highlights of the area is watching the famous dolphins of Cardigan Bay. You can get a boat from nearby Newquay. Dolaucothi Gold Mines (01558 825146) where you can try your hand at panning for gold; useful if you’re planning an extravagant meal at the Harbourmaster Hotel.

Just over 3 miles away is the traditional Rhos Yr Hafod Inn (01974 272644) at Cross Inn with the tiny windows, thick walls, crackling fires and decorated oak beams that all old pubs should have. Beautiful and peaceful

We have 3 children 8,12&14 - no WiFi, no electricity could have meant 3 upset bored kids but no, they made friends, built fires, created their own pizzas and even played cluedo and scrabble with their old folks. We all loved it. We properly relaxed, enjoyed each other’s company whilst taking in the wonderful scenery. We couldn’t have asked for more from Laurie and his super family.

Love, care and black currants

Excellent facilities and beautiful details throughout. So much love and care has gone into this campsite. We hired the two cuckoo yurts which worked for our family of 5 with 3 teenagers aged 14-19. Wonderful weekend and the highlight for me was the black currants, they have never tasted so good!

The Yurt Farm

We arrived on a very rainy dark night in a steamed up vw camper (hired hence never driven before) and once the wood burner was lit the most perfect long weekend began. We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived with handmade hearts( honeymoon) to a message on the blackboard all discovered at different times just to enhance the feeling. We awoke to discover the most wonderful site that we will return to time and time again, it truly is perfect. The children couldn’t wait to use the solar showers and the compost toilet was another attraction. We cooked both in the cabin and on the open fire and everything we needed was there. Ceridigion and north pembrokeshire are some of the nicest places to stay in wales and there is plenty to do what ever your interests. We always looked forward to getting back to the yurt and never tired of the site. On the day we left, the morning sun was glorious, the site was deserted and the world seemed perfect. I really can not wait to go back to this little piece of paradise.

The Yurt Farm

We discovered The Yurt Farm by lucky chance and fell in love with it from our first visit. We have visited twice now and are already planning our next holiday! The farm setting is idyllic. So peaceful and beautiful, you feel relaxed as soon as you arrive. The yurts are wonderfully ’kitted out’, cosy and practical with a luxurious feel you certainly don’t get from a tent! Everything from the communal cabin, the great showers and toilets, the outside pizza oven and the farm land to explore just add to the uniqueness of the experience. Thea, Laurie and their lovely family are great hosts, and we were made to feel really comfortable and were welcomed back like friends on our second visit. The area around has lots to offer, with our particular favourite being the Centre for Alternative Technology which is a great day out. We can’t recommend this holiday highly enough!

The Yurt Farm

Wow what an amazing experience, we went there to relax and get away from everyday life. Well it worked a treat. Sooooo relaxing and great facilities. The Yurts had everything you need for our weeks stay. Being able to cook over a fire brought back memories from my younger days. Laurie & Thea are great host so friendly and welcoming. Love the surrounding area too, especially enjoyed Machynlleth. Definitely worth a visit, shall be going back soon.

The Yurt Farm

An awesome site. So quiet and peaceful its like being in a different world. The kids roamed free and happy, whilst we as parents had a completely relaxing time. The yurts themselves are really well equipped with pretty much everything you need for your stay and the cabin is a lovely place to relax and drink some tea. Laurie and Thea are really friendly and the perfect hosts. They make you feel like you are part of the family in thie rural idyll. Beautiful Aberaeron is a short drive away for Ice Cream, fish and chips and some lovely independent shops as well as the walk along the seafront. All in all the perfect family get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We will return as soon as we can to recharge our batteries!
