A labour of love; conceived, designed, constructed and planted by Fran and Tony. And all that work so you can relax in quiet splendour

Many of our favourite camping and glamping sites offer an escape from the daily grind and a taste of a simpler, more-sustainable lifestyle. Many of them offer the chance to get closer to nature and to stay in beautiful parts of the UK. And many of them are run by inspiring people with eco-friendly principles. But not many of them are as well established as Larkhill Tipis and Yurts: This site was one of the early pioneers of glamping, established by Fran and Tony way back in 2003.

When this hardy couple moved here they had no plans to start a campsite but after a decade of life off grid with their daughters, animals, stupendous views and beautiful sunsets, they decided it was time to share what they’d found. They bought the first tent, a tipi, then made the rest, with Tony building frames and Fran sewing canvas. The result is a unique collection of tents inspired by Nomadic structures from around the world. Each has its own charm. Fran says she finds majesty in the shape of the tipi and loves the Mongolian ger. Daughter Catherine, now grown up and helping manage the place, is fond of the Iranian-inspired alachigh with its far-reaching views.

Whichever one you choose, you’ll find it furnished, and set-up with cooking equipment, a log burner, blankets and colourful cushions. For a small extra charge, bedding can be provided, otherwise it’s one of the few essentials they advise bringing – together with food, towels and a torch. Everything else is provided for you – down to toiletries and washing-up liquid which are all eco-friendly. The glamping site remains off grid, with electricity from a combination of solar, hydro and wind power, but water is from the mains. There’s a communal wooden hut for rainy days, washing-up and under-cover cooking with a covered fireplace just outside. There’s a play area too and you’re welcome to explore the whole 20 acres; from the woodland Fran and Tony planted to the carbon-absorbing peat moorland they’ve left alone.

Further afield, Cardigan Bay beaches are a 20-minute drive away. Inland, you can canoe along the Teifi river, ride horses on Llanllwni Mountain or cycle the trails at Brechfa Forest. This is Wales, so it’s no surprise that there are castles galore; the closest at Cilgerran and Pembroke. The National Botanic Garden and National Wool Museum are also nearby. Larkhill makes a great base from which to explore these national treasures. Indeed, you might say that, with 20 years of its own local building, planting and artistry, it’s fast becoming a national treasure itself.

Mongolian Ger
We loved our Mongolian yurt. I was nice and cosy and warm. Even if the weather wasn't so great we had fantastic time.

My partner and I stayed in Mongolian Ger for 2 nights and the experience was incredible, to say the least. Everything from the amazingly detailed interior of the yurt to the lovely wood carvings dotted around the woodland surroundings. It was perfect. A little quieter than the normal time of year, but personally I thought that was just perfect, a lovely short break to sit back, relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. I will definitely be returning next year! Can't wait to try out the other yurts!! :)

We have just returned from our lovely visit to Larkhill with our two teenage boys. From the outset Fran was so hospitable and everything you could possibly want or need was catered for. The setting is beautiful and the way the land has been nurtured and managed is really inspiring. We stayed in The Alachigh which had plenty of room, was super cosy with the wood burner and had a lovely window to watch the sunset from.We would highly recommend a visit.

Just perfect.  Stayed for two nights in the lavvu,  which was cosy and snug.  Kids loved it and didn't want to leave.  Explored some lovely beaches.  Larkhill is beautiful,  well thought out and very welcoming.  We all want to go back again soon.  Highly recommended.

From the host
An award winning eco-friendly campsite in west Wales established in 2003. We have five different comfortable nomadic structures – an Alachigh, a Mongolian Ger, a Bentwood Yurt, a Lavvu and a Native American tipi. All are in their own 'space' and have comfortable beds with wood-burning stoves, set in and around an established woodland on a 20 acre smallholding. With panoramic views, woodland walks with wood carvings around each corner and a woodland children's play area. Hand-made stepping stones weave in and around the campsite to prevent muddy paths! We have rare breed sheep, chickens and ducks. The whole campsite is run from alternative energy and all equipment is provided including extra blankets. Facilities include a communal campfire area, a log cabin for everyone to use, two hot showers and two loos - one compost and one flush. We provide a friendly service and are on hand at all times.
Nearby attractions

Situated between Cardigan Bay and the Carmarthenshire coastline glampers here are spoilt for choice for white sandy beaches. Other nearby attractions include the free-to-enter National Wool Museum (01559 370929), just four miles from site where kids can have a go at weaving, and the splendid National Botanic Garden (01558 668768), 20 miles away. There’s canoeing and kayaking on the Teifi River – try Llandysul Paddlers (01559 363209), 7 miles from site. Horse-riding adventures can be booked with Blanca Trekking (07890 868994), based 11 miles from site and there’s mountain-biking at Brechfa Forest, 17 miles away. For something more relaxing, there’s massage and healing available at the Malindi Centre – and you can even organise to have a massage on site!

Food and drink

On site you can buy eggs from the site’s very free-range chickens and honey produced from its beehives. For more supplies, the closest shops are in Newcastle Emlyn, 7 miles from site, where you’ll also find a host of cafes too. The vegetarian Riverside Cafe (01239 710404) comes recommended by Fran as does Caws Cenarth; an award-winning cheese makers where you can not only buy some local cheese, but watch it being made too. For a traditional Welsh country pub with good food, try The Nag’s Head Inn at Abercych (01239 841200) - the 10-mile drive is well worth it.
