Of all the wildly enchanting islands and atolls scattered off the west Scottish mainland, the Isle of Arran is arguably the most magnificently varied of these rocky outcrops. Scythed in half by the subterranean Highland Boundary Fault, this easily navigable 19 mile long island boasts a remarkable diversity of sea and landscapes. To the south, undulating countryside and vibrant coastal pockets are offset against the distinctive sills and dykes – remnants of the natural forces which shaped this land. While to the north, dramatic mountains borne of primordial battles between fire and ice are awash with vibrant Scottish heather.

Nestled within a weather-bitten chunk of the island’s northern tip, Lochranza is a fishing village of such picture-postcard perfection, it’s almost absurd. Situated on the shores of a small sea loch, the village plays hosts to the ideally situated Lochranza Camping and Caravanning Site.

On a spacious flat clearing, hugged lovingly by towering, lush glens, Lochranza is a one of the regions most scenic spots to pitch up. The site is abuzz with wildlife (including an inquisitive red deer population) and there is a wealth of heritage, history and cultural trips to be enjoyed nearby and across the island at large. What’s more, the campsite boasts a 9 hole, par 34 golf course—ideal for all levels. What more could you ask for?

The Owner Says

(info supplied by the campsite)

It is a normal everyday  experience at Lochranza Campsite to wake up to the sound of deer softly munching the grass right next to your tent or camper van. As you look outside it is not unusual to see the local golden eagles soaring above you, with the rays of the rising sun catching their wings, or a red squirrel on a mission across the grass to a different tree. The campsite offers peace, mesmerising beauty and close experiences of wildlife that even wild camping cannot match very often.

We are a relatively small campsite that offers simple but good facilities for visitors who love being part of nature and the great outdoors. Our washrooms are clean, modern and heated for the benefit of those of you who like to be out early and late in the season. There is no extra charge for the showers or hairdryers. We also have a dishwashing area with hot water provided and a small laundrette with a drying cupboard for outdoor jackets and boots. There are lots of electric hook up points. You can get your maps out in the campers’ room, where you will find plentiful information to help you to plan your holiday. For camper vans and caravans we have a chemical disposal point (green chemicals only please) and 10 hard standing pitches. We sell camping essentials, gas, and walking maps and guides.

3 wooden camping pods are available for hire. They have heating and lighting but are otherwise unfurnished.

Lots of walking routes start from the campsite gate. We are close to the island’s scenic perimeter road which is popular with cyclists, and the island bus service stop is only 200m away. The ferry to Kintyre shuttles from Lochranza pier several times daily. In Lochranza you will find: the Arran Distillery, the village’s 9 hole golf course, the medieval castle, the Boguillie Bar at the Lochranza Hotel, the Sandwich Station, the Stags Pavilion Restaurant, the Whinns Crafts, and the Secret Garden Art Gallery. Lochranza is famous worldwide for its amazing geology.

Lochranza

We suggest you ignore the modest claim made by the owners ('simple but good facilities'). Admittedly we were here early in the new 2013 season but the facilities are more accurately described as comprehensive and outstandingly presented - the warmest, cleanest loo block we found on Arrran with loads of hot water in showers & wash basins, good lighting, hairdryer etc. & the friendliest possible welcome (they even run out to open the gate when you come & go!) Should a proper review knock off a mark for the deer poo that appeared overnight on our pitch? Possibly, but we considered this all part of the charm of this most charming of sites & being up close to the Red Deer was thrilling. The icing on this very delectable cake is the hidden gem that is the Stag Pavilion restaurant just outside the site gate. We will say no more because we want to keep it our little secret but suffice to  say, we can't wait to go back.
