Inver Coille

Inverness Shire, Inverness, Scotland
1 acre hosted by Chantelle L.
A small, friendly family run camspite, with partial views of Loch Ness
“At the end of the woods” is the meaning of this campsite’s Gaelic name and a rather fitting one given the way it snuggles among trees, too thin to be considered a forest but not quite sparse enough to give unbroken views of Loch Ness. The loch holds more water than every lake in England and Wales put together – plus a famous murky monster that still draws tourist crowds.

A family-run site, Inver Coille comes with all the wonderful gifts that a newly created campsite creates. The tent pitches themselves remain beautifully rustic and unaltered – there are no electrical hook-ups and no lines of static caravans to blight the landscape – while the facilities are all brand new, including a drying room for soggy clothes, showers, toilets and washing up sinks with water filtered from a burn that runs through the campsite. There are also a couple of glamping options: A pre-pitched bell tent and two modern looking geo-domes, each positioned on a flat wooden platform and furnished inside with proper beds.

The small, intimate atmosphere of the campsite suits the tranquil surroundings, with tents pitched on two grassy meadows enclosed by trees. A maximum of 40 pitches ensures everyone has space. Most folks are walkers or cyclists following the routes along the loch shores. The Great Glen way is particularly popular – a 72-mile coast-to-coast route across the highlands that passes just a few hundred metres up the slope from the campsite.

Invermoriston is the nearest village, three miles away, though your better off heading four miles south to Fort Augustus where there’s a little more going on, including an excellent visitors centre, a small museum and the scenic ending to the Caledonian Canal where a series of five locks tumble down into the loch. There are also a few good pubs around and tour operators who can take you out onto the waters to search for Nessie yourself.

From the host
Inver Coille (which means "At the end of the woods" ) is a quiet, luxury, family run campsite that sits in 3-acres of beautiful grounds besides Loch Ness with stunning mountain views. We have high-quality shower rooms for our campers and Bell Tent guests, and luxury shower rooms for our Geodomes as well as a campfire area, many seating areas and a small on-site shop. Also with access to the Great Glen Way forestry path from the back of our campsite, a short evenings stroll is well rewarded for the far reaching mountain views and stunning vistas over Loch Ness. This breathtaking scenery makes us a perfect spot to pitch your tent, take a break and rest your well travelled feet. Inver Coille comes complete with drinking water and an area for washing up; we're not short of water given that it's filtered from our own burn on site!
Nearby attractions
Head to Fort Augustus (4 miles) to watch boats gradually progressing through the Caledonian Canal locks onto Loch Ness. It's quite a site and a wonderful place to sit and have a bit to eat as you watch. There's also a good visitor centre (01320 345156) here where you can make plans for the rest of your stay, including loch cruises (01320 366277). A few miles further up the shore, Urquhart Castle (01456 450551) is well worth a visit. Once one of Scotland’s largest castles it is accompanied by a full-sized, working trebuchet (a stone-throwing machine) as used in medieval times. For those who don't want to take on the lengths of the Great Glen Way (running directly past the campsite), head around the loch to Foyers where there's a short but spectacular walk to the Falls of Foyers, set in a dramatic gorge. It starts and finishes at a nice little café too!
Food and drink
An onsite shop sells essentials and the local villages have larger shops around 5 minute's drive away. For a meal out, try the The Boathouse Lochside Restaurant (01320 366682) where fresh fish and chips and traditional grub is mixed with a few Mediterranean options.
