Spacious glamping and camping in gorgeous wild flower meadows in Eastern Scotland

If the point of camping is to immerse yourself in nature then few places do it better than Greenhillock Glamping. A five-acre site with just 25 pitches and a scattering of beautiful bells, it exudes a wonderfully wild and natural aura yet without simply abandoning you in the hills. In fact, Greenhillock is really a family site – a haven for kids and well equipped with solar showers, toilets, communal cooking and chillout area – yet its sense of nature comes not from feeling isolated in the wilds, but rather from being a part of the natural surroundings.

As a campsite the place is excellent. The pitches are generous and well spaced out and the communal field shelter is perfect if the weather doesn’t play ball. There’s an 'Art Shack' for creative kids, while those seeking comfort can ditch their tent and pluck for one of their three bell pods instead – fully furnished with wooden floors and a private deck area with firepit.

As a place to explore, though, Greenhillock really is something else. Nature trails, some mown narrowly among the long wild grasses, others meandering into surrounding copse, weave and separate through the surroundings, linking back up again like a vast natural maze. Hedgerows and mature trees provide enough fallen branches to set the scene for the next World Den Building Championships and a pond in a quiet corner of the site is set up with wooden board platforms around its edges; purpose built spots from which you can poke and prod with a net and bucket. Insect inspecting is an essential part of any stay here. They even provide some basic scientific equipment to help you out.

The abundance of nature – thanks to more than 25 years of careful cultivation – make it an excellent spot for walking and cycling, with quiet B-roads keeping things safe and sound. More hardy types, though, should hop in the car and head north to the Cairngorms National Park, where formidable mountains offer tougher outdoor trails. The east coast is a similar distance in the opposite direction and a good alternative place to end the day, munching fish and chips along the harbour at Arbroath. Only if your not whiling away the hours around the campfire, that is; the essential ending point for most at Greenhillock.

5 compost toilets, 3 solar-powered showers. 3 furnished bell tents (sleeping 4), with wooden floors, a private deck and firepit. The site is car free, with parking in an adjacent plot and colourful wheelbarrows provided for transporting your gear. Campfires permitted (logs for sale). Field Kitchen (communal cooking and chillout area) housed in an ingeniously converted stable, Polyanna café-bar in a beautiful horsebox and an Art Shack (covered space with arts materials). Regular nature activities, pond-dipping, den-building, bug-hunting and more.

Suitable For

Tents, families, couples, dogs and large groups by prior arrangement – yes. Caravans, campervans and motorhomes – no. The site is car free, with parking provided in an adjacent plot.

The site is relatively equidistant between the spectacular mountains of the Cairngorms National Park (01479 873535) and the dynamic geography of the east coast. To the former it's around a half hour drive, to the later 20 minutes or so. Try heading straight for Arbroath – a medieval port town that's now a throbbing heart of the Scottish fishing industry. Sampling the fresh seafood is a must while your there. Visit grand Arbroath Abbey (01241 878756), founded in 1178 by King William the Lion, or pop in to see Kerr's Miniature Railway (01241 874074), the oldest miniature railway in Scotland, which has been operating since 1935. Today it is run by a hobby group of volunteers and remains popular with locals, tourists and railway enthusiasts. In the opposite direction, Glamis Castle (01307 840393) is 15 minutes by car, a 14th-century castle and the late Queen Mother's childhood home with guided tours of the lavish interiors available.

Food & Drink

Communal BBQs are provided. Monthly bar and BBQ events allow you a night off from cooking and let you savour local food and drink around the communal firepit. Away from the site, it’s short drive south to The Mill (01307 469486) for hearty breakfasts and lunches, while The Drovers Inn (01307 860322) is the top gastro pub in the area. For more of a restaurant vibe, try Forbes of Kingennie (01382 350777). For seafood near Arbroath, try But ‘n Ben (01241 877223).

Mid April–mid September.

Family Friendly

There’s a reason it’s not called Greyhillock. Wild grasses grow, dragonflies dance around the lily pond and birds flitter in the trees. It’s all about winding down with simple pleasures here, campfires, plenty of bug-hunting, pond-dipping and den-building activities make this a truly back to basics camping experience.

Relaxing low key family fun

We stayed for four days in the bell tent and loved it. As total camping novices we were apprehensive but need not have been. The tent was spacious and comfortable for us (one adult and two children under 10). The children loved playing with others and never once asked for a screen! We were helped by the fact the weather was glorious.

Perfect for the kids

We spent three wonderful nights at Greenhillock. Sunny days exploring the area including the fantastic local beach, nights by the campfire. Kate and Stig were very helpful, the facilities were clean and well maintained. For anyone with past experience using portaloos, a compost toilet is an absolute dream. We'd be back in a flash. Thank you.

Fantastic 1st camping trip

First time I have ever camped. Went as a family with our daughter & dog. Was so nice. Kate & Stig the owners were so friendly, made us feel at home straight away. Campfire at every pitch which makes it, couldn't imagine camping without a fire. Facilities clean. Will definitely return.

Beautiful site, minimal facilities.

We had a really enjoyable three night stay at Greenhillock- it's a lovely site and the natural, unspoilt feel that the owners have gone for us a refreshing change from some of the more commercial sites; only a couple of steps removed from wild camping. That being said, our family has a 'bare minimum' rule for camping that Greenhillock didn't meet: clean toilets and warm showers. Other people will be absolutely fine with the composting toilets and the solar-powered showers (in Scotland!) but we would prefer to be a bit more comfortable... Firepits for all pitches is great (although the cost of the firewood is high compared to the likes of Comrie Croft) and the amount of space for each pitch is pretty generous even for our huge family tent. I would certainly return for a short stay as both the campsite and the area have a lot to offer but for family camping we'll stick with something with warm water! Highly recommended if this stuff doesn't bother you🙂

Pretty and tranquil

This site is lovely with it’s wildflower meadow that changes colour through the seasons. Each pitch is good size and the owners are very helpful. However, despite the eco credentials, the amenities are not pleasant. The smell from the composting toilets is pungent and the solar powered showers are not adequate for the amount of people who camp there. These things could be easily improved upon to make the stay a more enjoyable experience.

Outstanding, friendly site

Just back from two brilliant days at Greenhillock. Stunning setting, with a great, level pitch amidst wildflower meadows. Brilliantly safe and relaxed with kids and families enjoying the site. Stig even brought us a metal firepit to used after we’d covered ours up with our massive tent! The Pizza night looked brilliant. So many sites say they are eco: Greenhillock really is, with clean compost toilets and solar showers. Everything has been so well thought out: including brilliantly coloured wheelbarrows to move your stuff from car to camp.

Peaceful and friendly

A peaceful , family oriented campsite with beautiful wild meadows, where children can run free. The workers were very friendly and if you needed anything they would do it for you. Thanks for a lovely break away. The shower in with the compost toilet in the glamping field was a bit of a smelly combination because never mind how much sawdust people put down it still stinks - so if you're bothered about things like that then it's probably not the place for you.

nice quiet site

Pitch are a bit small, nice quiet site,

Hidden gem of a place!

Stayed 26th - 28th July in the bell tent. What a place this is! Toilets take a little getting used to, but the whole experience of the entire site is well worth it. Owners are the friendliest people you could meet and always around to answer any questions. Everything you could think of that you might need - it’s already there! Thanks again - we will be back.

Great wee camp site

Lovely site, safe for the kids to have a good explore. Toilets well kept and bonus of indoor area with fridge

We LOVE Greenhillock. Just had our second visit and will definitely be back. Beautiful meadows - and brilliant barrows to transport gear from the car (pneumatic tyres make light work of the exercise). Thoroughly enjoyed pizza night on Saturday. A huge thank you to Stig and Kate for your gorgeous site and excellent hospitality.

Beautiful campsite, great for kids

Loved camping in the meadow. Beautiful flowers and surrounded by birdsong. They even put on a make your own pizza kitchen on the sat night. Whole family found this great fun and a change to normal camping fare. Owner came round in evening to make sure you had wood for your campfire. Lovely owners always happy to stop and chat and answer questions. Toilets took a moment to get used to! Wouldn’t want to drop my phone down those 😂 Love this campsite and def returning.

Excellent camping

Back to nature camping with style.

Perfect for getting away from the chaos

The grounds are natural and beautiful. Facilities are great with lots for kids and best of all set up so there's minimal impact on the environment. Great way to run a glamping/camping site.

Lovely stay in a well organised site

The site had great facilities, all sorted for social distancing. There was a separate field for adults only which was lovely. The whole place was alive with birds as the land owner had bird feeders all over. We even saw a buzzard on the way out one morning. We were half an hour from the coast - enormous sandy beaches and half an hour from the cairngorms. There are also multiple nature reserves around.

Perfect campsite

Just a perfect campsite - small, full of nature, loved the den building area. Apparently it was very busy but it never felt busy - no queues for the showers or loos! Appreciated the regular cleaning of facilities and the abundant hand sanitiser. A really beautiful and well-thought-out campsite.

Very enjoyable

Wild flower meadows are gorgeous and staff was very helpful.

Fantastic place with excellent hosts.

A beautiful meadow to sit n chill. We had an excellent time. Stig and Kate are great hosts. A great find and will definitely be back.

Chilled out break with toddlers in a flower meadow

Greenhillock is a special campsite, as a family we’ve been there about 6 times now. You won’t find caravans or motorhomes here! The meadows are surrounded by hedges bursting with wildlife where your littles can explore and build their confidence. Every visit our kids and our dogs and even us adults make new friends here! The owners couldn’t be more welcoming. It’s a brilliant base for exploring the area, but also it’s a great place to just stop and connect

Hidden gem

A fantastic, beautiful little campsite hidden away in the countryside. This year the facilities are slightly reduced but this by no means spoils the experience. Everything you need - toilets/showers and washing facilities are still available and kept spotlessly clean. Sensible measures in place to keep people safe and friendly, welcoming hosts all add up to a wonderful place to escape to.

Thanks very much for your review Iain  - glad you enjoyed your escape!

Amazing third visit

My husband and I just had our third stay (second camping, and have also stayed in a Glamping tent), this time with in-laws taking two adults only pitches (Trool and Shira). We felt like we had our own little corner and lots of privacy, which was ideal as we’re more night than morning people! Warm welcome as ever, new Covid measures explained well. Hutties and showers kept lovely and clean, with extra cleaning spray and sanitizer available. We enjoyed lovely hot showers in the evenings, though we did have some exceptional weather. The field kitchen is closed as a Covid precaution but we took along a 12v fridge and solar panel, plus cool blocks for which a freezer is provided by the washing up sink. Combined with a gazebo it meant we had the fridge and the rainy day space the field kitchen provides on our own pitch. The wildlife and proximity to nature was so welcome after lockdown - great big skies on a clear night to see the Milky Way and the recent meteor shower, fox cubs chirruping at dusk, and a hedgehog shuffling through the mature meadow at night were a highlight, plus what I think was a water vole. Handy for day trips - we drove to Glen Doll to hike up Mayar and Driesh, and to Easthaven and Arbroath for beach, ice cream and a chippy. Tesco at Forfar is very convenient. Always recommend Greenhillock, and hope to be back - it’s such a happy, peaceful place and it’s lovely seeing it mature and evolve each year.

Thanks Ailsa for your lovely review. Very glad you got to hear the hedgehogs they really love it by the grown-ups pitches! Come back soon!

Lovely spacious site

Greenhillock is a great site which provided us with an oasis in this unusual Summer. The wild flower meadows were beautiful and the endeavour to have a green ethos is to be commended. A great site in a great location which was clearly an adventure playground for children.

Excellent trip, brilliant site

Not long home from Greenhillock and already talking about going back. A brilliant site with everything you need, including that little bit of space that other sites don’t offer. We went with friends and had an excellent time...and will be back! ⛺️

Excellent campspite

Great site with good amenities despite the COVID restrictions. The children loved running around the meadows and playing in the den! Peaceful site and very well run. The owners are lovely and friendly and always at hand. We would definitely recommend and look forwards to returning!

Thank you for your great review Rachel, we loved having you here! Come back soon.

Idyliic setting and a hit with the children too!

We have just spent 3 nights at Greenhillock and it was wonderful. We got such a lovely welcome when we arrived and the site is absoutely stunning. My girls loved running along the paths cut through the wildflowers and building dens. The facilities were great too and I loved that every evening at 6pm a wheelbarrow laden with logs appeared for us to make a purchase! We are already looking forward to the next time.

Comfortable campsite with impressive eco-credentials!

We live locally and decided to try a trip close to home to try out our new tent which we haven’t been able to use yet and what a wonderful little hidden gem Greenhillock turned out to be! The site itself is spacious and the wild flower meadow ensures that all of the pitches are pretty private. The composting toilets were clean and comfortable with no spiders and nice, quick hot water (completely solar powered)! The meadow is beautiful and an absolutely stunning landscape to wake up to! The team at Greenhillock were incredibly accommodating and friendly - everything had been thought about - we especially liked that they provided wheelbarrows to cart your stuff from the car to the pitch! We also appreciated that they sell logs on site to use in the fire pit! Importantly Greenhillock have put in place some very clever and sensible measures to ensure that social distancing can be maintained on site including simple but effective measures such as adding “occupied” flags to the toilet cubicles so that queuing is kept to a minimum - you can wait by your tent until you see that there is a free stall - not that we had to wait during our stay but it certainly had been well thought out! Bleach solutions were also provided throughout the site to allow for effective decontamination. Overall - we will definitely be returning to Greenhillock for another wee weekend away from town and would thoroughly recommend the site to anyone who wants to get a bit of relaxing time out! Also - the mobile signal was excellent! 😊 Thanks so much for a brilliant few days - even if the weather was a bit soggy!!

Great weekend in a beautiful spot

Just back from an amazing weekend at Greenhillock. As always it was such a lovely experience, fantastic setting and great pitches. From the minute you arrive the feeling of calm descends and the peace and quiet is amazing
Jul 20, 2020 by Pat kelly

Best campsite ever

We camped for 2 nights over a lovely sunny weekend, 2 adults and 2 kids -4 &9. Received a warm welcome plus tour of site from the friendly owner who recommended the best spot to pitch for the longest time in the evening sun. No parking beside your pitch, wheelbarrows are provided to get your stuff to the pitch which were great(kids enjoyed helping with these). Group pitches were closer to car park. Ours was in the far corner, quiet and a great sunset. Felt safer for kids with no cars driving back and forth. Shona advised the site is completely fenced off and kids could go anywhere they liked which the did, even after the sun went down! With a den building area, woods, mud kitchen, wild flower meadow, craft hut and lots of space the kids went off exploring and made new friends without us having to worry. Also onsite there was a pond with equipment provided for pond dipping, we all had lots of fun doing this. Each pitch had a fire pit, wood and kindling delivered direct to you by barrow. Composting toilets were fab and not any smellier than a regular toilet block, clear instructions given on there use. We used the solar showers later in the afternoon so the water was lovely and warm. Field kitchen with camping stoves could be used along with seating inside. Also fridge and freezer space available. Outside the field kitchen there were tables and chairs for eating for groups to get together. Washing up stations good and a BBQ area, coal could be bought onsite or brought with you. We had the BEST time here, left the site once to get a few bits but the kids wanted back asap for more exploring. I cannot fault this site. We all want to go back as soon as possible!

Amazing night

We went just for the one night and honestly wish we’d stayed longer. We went as a group of friends (all teenagers) and had the best time. The host came and showed as around on arrival and even brought us firewood and kindling to use on the campfire making it so easy to enjoy the whole expierence. There was so much to do for kids so when they’re older we will definitely be taking them! & to top it all off the stars at night were absolutely amazing. Thank you so much💫

family get away that shocked us by how amazing it was

literally the best camp site i have ever been on. the glamping was amazing and had so much provided for you when you arrive that you can be settled in in minutes especially as our group had booked 2 bell tents and had 4 children ranging from 18 months to 11 years old this was a god send. the bell tents were huge and you could easily fit 7 or so people in them even tho they are for 5 people. huge kudos to the wardens on site whatever they pay them isn't enough they made the site so much more enjoyable and were always willing to help in anyway possible and maintaining the site perfectly so you never saw a trace of previous campers or glampers. they were also super polite, respectful and so friendly toward the kids. we had so much fun over the 3 days we were there we only left the site once to collect more provisions of food and drinks. the explanation of how the eco composting loo's worked was easy to understand and made the site even more appealing. the lovely story of how the site came to be in the kitchen is well worth the read and you will appreciate the beauty of the site even more knowing why and how it all came about. again i cannot recommend this site enough and will definatly be going back at the first opportunity. 11 out of 10 for sure. thank you matt and shona

Lovely family site though not as quiet as expected

We took our two kids (7 and 9) here for the weekend this summer, in a large tent (booked a large pitch). We had originally booked a large pitch and a single pitch next to it, and were told by email this had been confirmed, (as my son and daughter wanted to sleep in a smaller tent next to ours) but when we arrived the site acknowledged they had forgotten about this :( so we just stayed in our big tent altogether which was fine but could have been tricky if we didn't have the capacity to do that. Other than that hiccup, the arrival process is v good - you are greeted in a v warm manner and given a tour once you've been shown to the car parking which is very close to all the pitches really (on the edge of the family pitch part, and next to the field kitchen etc). There are large pitches in the middle of the area closest to toilets and facilities etc, and small pitches further up and around. There is a back meadow which has the Glamping tents and grown up only pitches. There is wild flower meadow and long grass all around and it's very pretty. There are five compost toilets in painted huts and two solar showers - can't comment on the showers as we roughed it and didn't use them! but the toilets were fine, and cleaned regularly (though by the end of each day they did smell, and sadly our pitch was the nearest large pitch to them (Croe) so we did get a bit of an unpleasant whiff at times when sat round the campfire in the evening - not overpowering but definitely there). The toilets are lit with fairy lights at night and have sinks with soap and water and mirrors etc. The compost toilet is explained to you when you arrive and there are also helpful signs. It was clear to me lots of parents let their small kids use the toilets on their own therefore the rules about use of sawdust and paper etc were not always followed, lol, but generally they were fine. Facilities wise is v good - there is a field kitchen with fridge and freezer, where you can store food, ice blocks etc, and two charging points for electronics. This area has tables and chairs, and lots of local info and wildlife information on the walls and around, and a wee book swap. There is giant connect 4 for kids, a swingball set outside, and a great wee hobbit house thing called an Art Shack for kids to go in and it's filled with craft supplies. Up the back of the small pitch area which has paths through it for walking, there is a small pond for wildlife spotting and pond dipping. For a deposit you can get pond dipping kits for the kids with nets, clear boxes and wildlife info which most folk did use I think, great fun. There is also a mud kitchen for the kids right next to the pond. It feels very safe for kids to run around playing and it was clear lots of wee friendships were being made. There is also a den building area. There is a small firepit next to each tent pitch. In the large pitch our firepit was really really close to the next pitch which was a bit awkward. The site sell logs and kindling and ask you not to use their trees/woods for materials. However, the logs they sold were not up to much, quite damp and very smoky as a result, some folk were going elsewhere to buy their materials for the fire. There is a communal BBQ provision (didn't see anyone use it our weekend). There's a low noise after 10pm rule - this was our main gripe really for a family site, it was not enforced - there was no drunkenness or anything, it's not that vibe, it was all families or couples, but many families let their kids run around shrieking in the pitch black til well after 1130pm both nights we were there, which meant our kids couldn't sleep and neither could we! The family next to us mentioned it to the owner after our first night but it didn't improve a great deal. Having said that, there is always one, and this was really our only gripe. If we had been slightly further away from the toilets on our pitch, and they hadn't forgotten about the two pitches next to each other , I would have gave our visit five stars. my husband did comment he thought from the site it would be more peaceful in general it's certainly not got that 'wild camping' feel to it in the large pitch area, we were very close with several other tents, but I guess when you have a big family tent (we have a Voyager 6 ) that is often par for the course as you can't fit in the best pitches! Would for sure recommend to other families with kids.

Lovely site, with welcoming hosts

A lovely first night away with our 1 year old. A lovely site within the wild flowers, lots to do, and lovely friendly hosts. We will definitely be back!

Nice sized, Eco friendly, lovely people

Lovely little camp site with great facilities. Feels very natural , no motorhomes, caravans tarmac roads etc and you get the feeling of being out in the countryside. Having a firepit on each pitch is fantastic and we all loved it. Very family friendly site with nice clean facilities. Well Done

So good we went back a few weeks later!

I first stayed at Greenhillock with my 3 year old daughter in June at the solstice celebration. We loved the relaxed, friendly and laid back atmosphere. The site felt safe for the little one and there was plenty to do for imaginative minds. We had so much fun that we returned in August with husband and our friends and their 2 kids and had a great time again. Yes the composting toilets get a little bit funky if the site is busy but it’s not a big issue. We will definitely visit again next year.

beautiful location, great facilities, we had a blast

Just home from two lovely nights camping with three families in total, kids from 8 to young teens. Loads for the kids to do, den building, board games, a craft hut and lots of room for hide and seek, ball games and other outdoor fun. The amenities are all clean and well maintained and the site itself is lovely with a great view of the stars and the milky way on the first night with no clouds in the sky.

An excellent family campsite

We stayed at Greenhillock with 3 other families and we had a great time. The Bell tents were very comfortable and had lots of useful items such as pots and pans, plates, bottle opener etc. The kids enjoyed toasting marshmallows, making dens, pond dipping and painting rocks. We will return.

Magic natural haven

We had a fantastic family camping weekend at Greenhillock and right from the start Isabel and team were able to answer questions and give advice. The site was fantastic for both kids and adults. Its always a bonus to have a proper fire and we certainly were grateful for the inside space after when the storm broke. Lots of great facilities while still being eco friendly in every way. Will definitely be back though almost want to keep it to ourselves!!

Facilities were brilliant

Me and my partner have just returned from a weekend at Greenhillock, we travelled 5 hours and requested a late check in which was absolutely no problem. What a great experience, spacious tent pitches, excellent facilities especially for those without much camping equipment. The staff are lovely and very informative. Great weekend, thanks guys.

great experience

this was our first camping experience, as novices we were nervous about what to expect, the staff were friendly, helpful and informative, fellow campers were also friendly. All the pitches are fairly close to the facilities. Its been a lovely weekend, thanks.

Peacefull. Secluded

Nice secluded campsite away from any roads. There are 5 glamping pitches but we brought out own tent and booked the adults area which is a great idea. There are 2 fields, 1 mains one with all the tents, toilets, showers and kitchen area. Then theres the adults field next to the main one, where there is the glamping tents also in this field. Each pitch has a fire pit and if you need wood they come round and ask of you want to buy any wood etc which was really cool. No cars are to go past the car park so kids can roam free, There are loads of wheel barrows setup there, so you can transport your stuff to your pitch with ease. This is a well thought out camping area for tents and glamping and would highly recommend!

Beautiful wildflower meadows....

A wonderfully thought out eco friendly campsite with great, simple, eco friendly facilities! Very welcoming owners and staff who talk you through everything and are on hand to answer questions or sell firewood! Nice spacious pitches with campfire pit. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and our two girls loved pond dipping! (Kit was provided for a small deposit if you don’t have your own!)

Love it!

We stayed here in August, most of the Scottish schools were back and there were just a few having the last weekend away. It's a beautiful, yet basic site. Lots of thought has gone into facilities, from extra sinks for brushing teeth, clean composting toilets and solar showers (lovely and hot after a sunny day, not so attractive when overcast, but that's understandable). Having the option to eat in the Field kitchen, with fridge and freezer space was great on the inevitable wet day, also the artists tent for children, particularly when the adults were washing up was well used. The only tears were on the day we had to leave when I told the kids (4 and 6) that not every piece of "art" covered in grass seeds could join us. Campfires were no problem and owners very friendly and helpful, plenty of barrows for kit transfer to and from car. Lots to do on and off site, would love to head back. And of course, no midges got to us on that side of the country...

Our new favourite site!

We're just back from a one night stay at Greenhillock last night - we (family of four - 2 boys ages 5 and 8) were camping with another family (also two kids of same age). What a beautiful site - so much thought has been put into it, with the wild flower meadow dividing up the pitches, the cool 'beach hut' loos, the pond and pond dipping, the den building, the art shack, the field kitchen, the outdoor games, the bug shack, the campfire spaces on each pitch. We will definitely be back. This is pretty much exactly how I like a campsite! Pitches not too close together, a beautiful space, and campfires. The compost loos are so cool - not in the least smelly and so much thought has been put into them with the colours and the mirrors and basins inside (running water to wash your hands - and even hot water!) Our kids loved just being able to run wild, but we knew they were safe. Stig and Kate (the owners) are just delightful - they even willing joined in our game of charades with the kids around the campfire! I look forward to going again - I like the idea of the pizza ovens that Stig has in mind!

Great for kids

I stayed the night here with my 5 year old son. Despite the dreadful weather we had a fabulous time. Particular highlights were the campfire and pond dipping. We never had time to explore the den making area or the art shack! The owners were so friendly and helpful, they were fine with the dogs mooching about and we're really engaging with my boy. We'll definitely be back with the rest of the family!

An idyllic escape

We spent an idyllic weekend at Greenhillock Glamping on the 15th & 16th of July and we couldn’t have been made more welcome by owners Kate and Stig . A 10 minute drive from Forfar, Greenhillock is situated amongst rolling fields and flower rich meadows and is the perfect place for families, for those wishing to explore the many historic castles and palaces nearby or for those just wishing peace and tranquility. The beautiful beaches at Lunan Bay, St Cyrus and Carnoustie are 30 minutes away and there are many small towns and village to explore nearby. And for those who like to paint, Greenhillockwould be perfect with its wild flowers and beautiful meadows We stayed in two of their stunning bell tents and they were beautifully furnished and very roomy, with superbly comfortable double beds, fine linen and many extras including a luxury hamper of local produce. The patio areas were perfect for BBQs and the fire pit gave a warming rosy glow as the sun set through the trees. We all slept like logs and even though the weather turned for a time during the night, we were warm and cosy in our tents and were loathe to get up in the morning. The campsite is immaculately kept and we wanted for nothing. There is a communal indoor kitchen with everything to hand, a ready supply of chopped wood for the fire pits and acres of space for children to play and explore safely. We especially loved the Bug Zone and although my boys are in their late teens and early twenties, it’s the first place they went to explore! The loos, showers and changing huts were spotless and cleaned daily and looked so pretty as they were painted to look like seaside huts. Owners Kate and Stig are very keen to ensure the campsite is as environmentally friendly as possible and the solar heated showers etc worked a treat for all of us. I really can’t recommend Greenhillock Glamping highly enough, it truly exceeded all our expectations and as first timers at glamping, we are now well and truly hooked.

Fantastic weekend away

Spent an amazing weekend at Greenhillock Glamping. I can honestly say it's the most beautiful campsite I have ever been to and couldn't be better for kids. As soon as we arrived our children ran off to play, and apart from when they were hungry, they spent every waking minute we were at the campsite exploring and playing independently. It is such a safe, natural environment for children and adults alike. We stayed in one of the bell tents which was a wonderful combination of comfort and convenience while still being a proper escape and feeling like a real camping experience. There's not many better ways to spend an evening than sitting by a campfire in the middle of a wild flower meadow drinking hot chocolate and eating toasted marshmallows and we were able to enjoy that and so much more during our stay. I really couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Fantastic first glamping experience!

Short weekend break with friends was made even more fantastic by the incredibly friendly welcome and great set up. Bell tents were awesome! We're more used to wild camping but really enjoyed this new experience!! Between us we brought 5 young boys and a girl who all love running around exploring, pond dipping, the arts tent and games but most of all freedom to run away from us! We quite enjoyed that freedom too! Really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and Stig & Kate's eco ethos! Thanks for an awesome experience!

Simple & Beautiful

We stayed here from Friday night to Sunday morning this July. We informed Kate and Stig that we would be late arriving due to coming from Edinburgh but they weren't fussed at all. They greeted us warmly and we were shown around the campsite. The idea of no cars is brilliant, and you get wheel barrows to take your stuff to you tent. The meadows are so beautiful it would be a shame to ruin these with cars! Kate and Stig were very conscious about the environmental impact of the campsite which meant everything was so amazingly thought out!! The compost toilets were brilliant and so clean! Even the dirty washing up water gets filtered and recycled! The best bit of the campsite however is the solar showers. I was very skeptical due to the cloudy days we had and hardly any sun but they were so hot!! I was very surprised! Stig is a very very clever man to build these himself! I've been to a lot of campsites since i was a child and in all honesty this one is my favorite so far. If you looking for simple, quiet and relaxing, this is the place for you.

Four friends and dog went to Forfar - no this isn't Enid Blyton!!!!! but lashings of fun, fun was had by all. Kate and Stig couldn't do enough to make us welcome. This is a wonderfully tranquil place, safe for dogs and children, with nothing but nature - the wild flower meadow is stunning (with tiny wee Orchids - Stig did say what they were but I can't remember!). Two adults and a hairy bairn (dog) in a bell tent - luxurious space with real attention to detail. We were sorry to leave and we will definitely be back.

Great Site

We spent a wet weekend in June at Greenhillock with our two boys aged 5 and 3 and had a wonderful time! Great facilities, a warm welcome on arrival and adequate space to pitch our large-ish tent - plus the added bonus of a firepit. The owners have worked hard to ensure there is plenty to keep the younger folk occupied - pond dipping and the art shack were very popular. As was the open air urinal with our 3 year old!! I can definitely recommend this as a great family site

Can't wait to return next year

When I bought a discount voucher online for Greenhillock Glamping, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Having just gotten back from a weekend stay, I can safely say it would have exceeded any expectations we would have had. Kate was ever so friendly and helpful and made the booking process easy and comfortable for our needs. We stayed in one of the bell tents and it was simply lovely! So much space, comfortable mattresses, and the decking at the front is a wonderful addition. We stayed with two autistic children who are usually very technology-obsessed, but they barely came indoors all weekend. There was plenty for the children to do - den-building, bug hunting, and just being outdoors and enjoying the amazing location - even the dog was in her element. The facilities were fantastic - I was originally a bit squiffy about the thought of composting toilets, but the gorgeously painted 'huts' were comfortable and spacious, and the process very simple. The 'field kitchen' is equipped with everything you could possibly need, including access to a fridge and freezer to keep your own food fresh if needed, and the site owners have covered all bases, down to board games for the family to enjoy, doggy treats, and the funkiest wheelbarrows I have ever seen for transporting your things to your tent (or your children, if they are monkeys like mine!) The other campers were all so pleasant and friendly towards myself, my mum and the children alike, and it is comforting to know that all guests had a common interest in being eco-friendly. The site was clean, tidy and spacious, and the added extra of a firepit beside each pitch (logs and kindling can be bought onsite for a very reasonable cost) made it an ideal site to sit and watch the stars come out - a particular favourite of my 11 year old daughter. Within an hour of arrival, my children were already begging to come back. We can't wait for next season and making another booking.

We were warmly welcomed onto this beautiful campsite and felt completely wowed by the high standards and attention to detail. It's a really very special place for adults and children alike. The meadow flowers are beautiful, the pond dipping is brilliant fun and the field kitchen perfect for gathering together. Our short stay was fantastic and I'd heartily recommend it.

Happy Campers

We arrived 3 families, 3 tents, 6 children, one mad camper, one medium camper and one 'I have never camped' we left restored, reflective and all happy campers. A great location. Loved the loos / showers in beach huts, activities for children and environmental knowledge of the owners. What a treat, so welcoming and accommodating!

A great time had by all!

I was part of a group of adults and kids who visited in 2015. I like the fact that you can have a campfire beside your tent and that there is a degree of privacy as the tent pitches are well spaced and all look over the wild meadow. We loved the sharing platters round the campfire and the friendly welcoming hosts. I would like to come back and stay in the Bell tents for the complete glamping experience at some point. Thank you Greenhillocks! :)

A family friendly escape to the wild with home comforts

I didn’t think I was Glamping in my own tent but the delicious sharing platters, hot, good quality showers and the composting loos made it feel Glam! I was impressed by what was on offer and I love all the thoughtful details. The best bit was a safe place for kids to roam and the friendliness of the owners.
