Out to Grass

UK England West Midlands Worcestershire

Laid-back festival vibe in the stunning Malvern Hills

More laid-back than a sun lounger and more chilled than a pack of frozen peas, Out To Grass is a campsite with a perfectly appropriate name. Just as winter-born calves bound from their sheds in May and clumsy-legged foals spring from their stables after quiet months inside, this green and spacious campsite is a spot for summer-time crowds to truly escape. It really is a place for us humans to be put out to pasture. Kids run free – think grass stains and muddy patches as if straight off a washing detergent advert – and adults kick back, enjoying an evening pint in the campsite bar. We don’t gnaw, we don’t graze, we don’t nibble on the grass, but all the same, you’ll be as happy here as any animal on earth.

Tucked in a quiet corner of Worcestershire, in the rolling fringes of the Malvern Hills, Out To Grass is a do-as-you-please campsite with an effortlessly cool ethos and a relaxed atmosphere. Owner Ian and his crew welcome you into the long curving meadow and leave you to find a spot to pitch your tent. Nowhere is strictly designated so it’s up to you whether you pick a patch beneath one of the two magnificently mature trees, or line the open meadow, with a space in the middle for children to play. Facilities are relatively basic, with three toilets and two showers, but they’re clean and perfectly adequate, while a huge geodesic dome houses a communal covered area with games and sofas.

The general feel of the campsite is slightly festival-esque. Nighttime music is to be expected on certain weekends – though usually at a low enough level that when you slip off to bed you’re completely undisturbed – and campfires are a must. On most Fridays they even have a communal fireplace blazing, with camp stews cooked up for everyone, followed by marshmallows and hot chocolate.

If you can drag yourself away from the meadow (and the bar!) there’s plenty to discover. The Malvern Hills are riddled with excellent footpaths and they’re namesake town is peppered with independent shops and pleasant little cafés (of which The Blue Bell is a particular gem). The county town of Worcester, meanwhile, is less than half an hour away. Its liberal dollop of half-timbered Tudor buildings and regal Georgian homes are intermingled with more stark modern structures, but the most timeless feature of the place is the River Severn, flowing along its western edge and past the mighty cathedral. The town has a wonderfully compact and walkable centre and offers the perfect urban daytrip – all the better as a contrast, before you’re put back Out To Grass.
