This year we are able to open our famous “pop-up” site from 21st July to 30th August, offering the very best of locations for exploring the trails and tracks of Cannock Chase. We will be offering the very best views but with only the bare necessities of camping life. Expect spacious pitches, drinking water, portaloos and portashowers. The onsite shop will be selling basic food, hot & cold drinks, Ice creams, camping accessories and toys for the kids. We can even charge your mobile phones. Our friendly staff will do all they can to assist you in your stay with us. ‘Please Note’ Raised off the ground BBQs are okay, fire pits aren’t allowed. Common wildlife sightings includes deer, muntjac, owls, buzzards, foxes and rabbits.
Glampers, campers, tents of all sizes, dogs, groups – yes. Campervans and caravans – no.
The campsite is a mere 100m from Birches Valley Visitor Centre (03000 674340), the main starting point for an exhilarating day out in Cannock Chase Forest – cared for by Forestry Commission England. Around the visitor centre, activities include, Go Ape (08450 949253; including Treetop Adventure and Forest Segway activities), Cannock Chase mountain bike trails (some of the most celebrated in the country), a Gruffalo spotters trail for children and 'Forest Live' concerts in the outdoors (see their online calendar for details). Further afield, the campsite is also very close (6 miles) to the National Trust's Shugborough Hall (01889 880160). Unlike many of the trust's properties, almost every aspect of the estate remains fully intact and open to the public. The complete estate, has all major buildings including the mansion house, servants' quarters, working farm and walled garden, plus a museum and an excellent model farm. On another note, the Staffordshire IronMan triathlon in June also goes directly past the campsite gate, making it a popular base for spectators as well as participants.
Food & Drink
Birches Valley Café (01889 574475) across the road at the Birches Valley Visitor Centre serves light lunch options, snacks, drinks and ice creams. It's an easy 10-minute walk to The Horns Inn (01889 586000) in Slitting Mill, which boasts a warm, cosy atmosphere in spring time – open fires, hearty food, real ales and endless gin options – and outdoor space in summer time. Dogs are welcome too. By car, drive the short distance to The Wolsey Arms (01889 883179) in Wolsey Bridge – it also makes for a very pleasant longer walk.
Usually six weekends a year only, (between late March – end of August). See calendar for details.

Little gem !
Loved this campsite! We spent two nights there in a bell tent, it was such a good find, literally across the road from Cannock chase where there was loads to do for the kids and a beautiful forest to walk/ run/ cycle round. The staff at the campsite were so friendly and couldn’t have been any more helpful. Showers were great and toilets were clean and better than I expected for portaloos ! Already looking to book to come back again in the summer!
Amazing, friendly and clean
We stayed over the bank holiday weekend for 4 nights. As a couple in our late 50s from north Wales who have camped all over the UK. This has been one of the best experiences thanks to the location next to the forest, huge space between tents and the cleanliness of the showers and toilets, especially over a busy bank holiday weekend. Amazing effort has been made by the staff and owners. This is the first review I have ever written. Dioch yn fawr.
Lovely location, so much space, amazing setup.
Stayer here with friends and had a marvellous time. Location easily accessible and next to fantastic forests with a GoApe and Gruffalo Trail for the kids. Facilities are temporary, so a touch on the basic side but clean, plentiful and easy to use. Plenty of bins, an excellent fresh pizza seller and well stocked shop (including phone charge service). Some reviews mention a 'noisy road' but this was clearly flagged up on arrival and we pitched about 100m away, noise wasn't an issue. Felt we had a huge range of pitching options. Not sure what some reviews mean by "crowded". We were in a good spot near toilets and shop on a Bank Holiday weekend and had no-one else within 50 metres of us! Staff were consistently excellent. This place comes highly recommended and we will return.
Great experience from start to finish. Booking was simple and detailed confirmation email arrived instantly. When we arrived, the welcome was warm and sincere, we were told where everything was and were directed to all the areas that we choose to pitch up. The campsite was really relaxed, with a good mixture of families, avid campers and groups having a good time (although nothing caused any disruption) The facilites were great, toilets and showers were regularly cleaned and the little pop up shop on site was a great addition for any forgotten camping gear or just some snacks/ ice cream etc. The pizza van that is open is open some evenings was great, but definitely get your order in before 8.30 to avoid them selling out. All in all a great campsite, very chill and relaxed with just the right amount of rules. Would definitely camp here again!
A camping festival next to a forest
Really good, laid back experience the staff were friendly and manned a reasonable well-stocked camping shop. The pizza guy was great, and you are just over the road from Cannock chase forest amenities like go ape. It is literally just a field though. Lots of large groups like to share their music giving it a festival atmosphere that unfortunately extends to the facilities. Sinks are thin on the ground, toilets quickly get manky, finding the drinking water tap was extremely hard and campfires were banned the week before we arrived. More flyers and information on local sites of interest we could visit would have been helpful. Would have been 5 stars if all these niggles could have been ironed out.
Wonderful atmosphere in a great location
We had a brilliant bank holiday weekend at Chase Camping. It's a relaxed and well-run site with spacious pitches in a fab location. The toilets were better than expected - clean portacabins that didn't run out of loo roll and no foul smells. Plus showers as a bonus, and a washing up area. Well-stocked shop and a stonebaked pizza van were a welcome treat, and made non-ehu camping that little bit easier. In fact, we didn't leave the site all weekend! Just sat in the sun, watching the children play from dawn til dusk. Just a shame the site isn't open more often! Can't wait to come back later in the summer if there is room.
Lovely site & staff
We got back yesterday from a 3 night stay here & what a lovely campsite it is! We were advised that if having a BBQ we had to go to the front of the field due to the campsites neighbours but there was plenty of room for everyone. We did bring 2 disposable BBQ’s so went where advised, but we mainly used our camping stove so could have gone up the other end. The onsite Pizza van was delicious! The shop was a fab surprise when we arrived as it meant not having to find a shop when you ran out of the little things! The welcome from the staff was fab, told us all about the site and local area. The Forrest is just over the road where they also have a Go Ape (which my lad loved). The only downside is the busy road, so take ear plugs if you are pitching up near the road. It didn’t put us off though & we will be back! The shower block & toilet blocks were always clean & working. Thank you for an awesome stay.
Amazing onsite staff but otherwise disappointed.
Firstly - if I could give the staff 5 stars as an individual rating I would. Their welcome was fantastic and gave such clear information for our stay. Throughout our 3 night stay they were absolutely brilliant. And the campsite shop is amazing! The reason I’ve given two stars overall is because, despite there being so much land, you can only camp in the first field if you wish to have a BBQ/fire. This meant that the first field was very full and busy while the adjacent field was almost empty. We expected a spacious camping experience and instead felt hemmed in on every side. The loos seemed problematic every day - blocking and backing up. And never felt properly clean. It did appear that the staff were doing their best to resolve these issues and I accept it may be a one-off problem unique to the weekend we stayed. Finally, we didn’t realise until we were all set up that the road would be so noisy. If you do camp here I would recommend pitching as far from the road as you can so you can feel like you’re getting away from it all. Maybe it’s a toss up between your desire for peace and tranquility; and your desire for a BBQ/fire. One final word for the staff - thank you! You were friendly, lovely, knowledgable, kind, generous and welcoming.
Lovely, relaxed site
We had a fab time - we even extended our break by a couple of days. Everything is as described, lovely big field super close to the gruffalo trail, lovely weekend pizza, a well stocked shop, and genuinely lovely owners. The lady that runs the site even helped us find a good spot and hold down our footprint as it was a bit breezy! Thanks for a lovely few days. 🥰
Everything we love about camping!
Came back from a camping weekend yesterday feeling thoroughly relaxed and like we'd had a much longer break. The place is an absolute gem and had it all for us - beautiful setting, clean facilities, lots of space, friendly and helpful staff, peaceful nights, local walks (you are just over the road from Cannock Chase forest), pubs nearby and an exceptionally well stocked camp shop. Covid safety well thought through with hand sanitisers in all the places you need them and hand basins in loos well stocked with hand wash and paper towels. Everyone on the campsite respected the social distancing guidance but with so much space between pitches anyway it was distancing by default! Extra bonus was the lovely fresh cooked pizzas from the pizza van that was there on the Saturday and Sunday night (with vegan option too!). We absolutely loved our stay there and would highly recommend. Thanks Chase Camping for a lovely break :)
Perfect base for a weekend of exploring
What a brilliant place to camp! Huge space so finding a perfect spot was easy. Staff were wonderfully friendly and the shop was a very handy thing to have on site. Lovely relaxed, laid back atmosphere and clean facilities. Felt totally safe leaving camp to go off exploring the beautiful Peak District. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back.
Great chilled out spot to camp!
We were really impressed by this pop up camping spot! Lots of room to pitch tents so you weren't on top of your neighbours. Well stocked camping shop on site. Opposite cool woods and lakes with a visitors centre and brilliant trails for walkers and cyclists. Gorgeous sunset views across Cannock Chase.
Great staff, area and facilities
My friend and I decided to do a camping trip following cancellation of our overseas holiday. We decided on Chase Camping in Rugely, Staffordshire for this experience. We certainly had a fab time, the staff were very welcoming and happy to help with every query/request. Although the evening weather was not so favourable, the daytime was great for an unforgettable walk in the forest straight opposite the well maintained camp site. I would strongly recommend this team of experts to accommodate the camping needs of others. Thank you guys.
Fantastic holiday beautiful location friendly and helpful staff
Beautiful Scenic location and Absolute bonus just being across the road from Cannock chase. Amazing forest walks. Friendly relaxed site. Staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. Camp shop reasonable prices. Disappointed that the pizzeria was not operational.
relaxing, convinient, plenty to do
great experience, nice open family friendly field, great shop, helpful and happy hosts, good/clean showers and toilets and great location directly opposite the chase where theres all sorts of activities
Great campsite and very attentive, friendly staff. We had an excellent weekend with friends in the bell tents! Would definitely come again!
Big site, lots of space, well kept loos and showers and nice guys working there
I really enjoyed this - there was no restrictions on where to pitch up and it's a great location for walks and Go Ape which is just over the road. The shop was pretty well stocked considering it was a marquee! I also liked that the noise from the really selfish group who wanted to play rave music very loudly was shut down by 10.10pm. Thanks for that! I'd recommend this as a great campsite in a nice location.
Friendly and spacious
Lovely weekend. Hosts were so friendly and helpful. Handy shop. Facilities really clean. Great location for walking to forest for walks and activities.
Festival feel without the music ! Fantastic owners. So helpful and friendly
This is the only campsite I’ve ever been to where the owners have personally chatted to me and asked if there is anything they can do to make the sure better. Such lovely people and really working so hard to make the site such a lovely place to be. The forest is opposite the site which was brilliant for walks and cycling at any time of the day (early morning and dusk lovely times to go) . The site has a shop for food and camping equipment which was helpful and the tents and pitches are well spaced apart. As it is a pop up campsite the toilets and showers are not permanent but that’s fine. Regularly cleaned and campers were very respectful and diligent about social distancing. Highly recommend. Thank you 😊 we had an age holiday.
Chilled, enjoyable weekend
Lovely spacious site with a great chilled out vibe. No noisy neighbours and lots of room for kids to play. On site shop and pizza van were absolute winners. Plenty of toilets but got a bit grotty by the end of the day. Fabulous location just across the road from the forest visitor hub, with an excellent playground and loads of forest trails. We didn’t use the car all weekend which was great! Would camp here again.
We received a very warm welcome by the staff, and this high level of service continued throughout our stay - thank you. The well stocked shop was a nice surprise, especially as we ran out of gas on the last morning. There was lots of room to pitch, the field was clean and well presented. COVID measures were in place throughout, with hand sanitizer and soap always full and located at key contact locations. All of the other campers eeemed friendly and respectful, too. Great location for our mountain bike rides into Cannock Chase forest. We loved it!
Fantastic Family Camping Holiday
We recently stayed in a bell tent for 4 nights, with our 4 kids, on our first family camping holiday and we will definitely be returning to Chase Camping. First-class location and excellent amenities and a fantastic, friendly team of staff made our stay thoroughly enjoyable and memorable and we cannot wait to return. Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍🏻
We loved Chase Camping. So much space, lovely views around and close to a forest park. Toilets and showers were clean and the staff was very helpful. We liked the fact that there was a site shop with camping essentials, coffee and ice-cream. We paid for a fire pitch but unfortunately couldn't use it as open fires were banned due to the weather. We didn't ask for a refund but got money back anyway. Definitely a good place for camping.
Simply a lovely place to be
From the welcome to the goodbye it was a perfect experience. The site is spacious, views are great and the forest trails are 20 metres from the gate. Facilities on the site are just what you need. Clean hot showers and clean loos, a nice shop under canvas and fun and friendly staff that are campers, so know what it’s about. We might be back in a few weeks time!
We're just home from our first solo camping adventure (my 5 year old son and I) at Chase Camping. It was a lovely, clean and spacious site with more than adequate facilities. The on site pop up shop was a godsend for milk and ice (very warm!) as well as the ability to charge devices (phone/tablet) for a small fee. Also sells anything camping related you may have forgot or not thought about. The shower experience is one I don't think we will forget but very funny (tip: stand in the shower tray to get changed afterwards as its probably the driest part ha). The staff are lovely, very friendly and helpful. Cannock Chase forest is literally across the road so cannot get a better location. All in all we felt very safe, at ease and happy. We will definitely return and have already recommended it to family. Thanks for a great start to our mini camping adventure journey 😊x
Fantastic campsite with everything you need to hand. Clean decent showers and toilets, well stocked shop and food van that was on site for the whole weekend. The staff were really friendly and happy to help. The forest is right on the doorstep too! Will definitely be back!
Great location, very helpful, friendly staff on site, good pitches with lots of space and great for families
Located adjacent to Birches Valley Forest centre and Cannock Chase MTB trails which was great plus go ape and all the walking and cycling for all ages and abilities. Site was clean and tidy, well organised and found all staff helpful, friendly and able to offer good advice on things to do. The pitches were nicely spaced out and the site had a wonderful space for families to play ball games and generally have fun. The hot sunny weather helped make it a lovely weekend but the on site camping shop and coffee/sandwich take away would satisfy those not tempted to break out the stove! Would highly recommend this pop up camp site.
What a fantastic weekend!
This is the coolest campsite we have ever been to, and we have been to a lot! Incredibly friendly and professional team who genuinely cared that we had a good time. Great bell tent and fire pit, high quality food van and shop. Some sites pack you in like sardines to make more profit, but this site is run on the principle that campers needs space and lots of it. A wonderful place to live in the moment and make memories that last forever. Perfect for relaxing or running around like loonies having loads of fun. And the kids enjoyed it too!
Lovely, friendly campsite
Very spacious campsite in a great location. All the staff were wonderfully friendly and helpful. The camp shop was amazingly well stocked and the toilets and showers were very clean. There is plenty of outdoorsy stuff to do around here. Our 3 year old especially enjoyed Fairoak Pools just over the road.
What a fantastic weekend!
This is the coolest campsite we have ever been to, and we've been to a lot. The staff were incredibly friendly and genuinely cared that we had a good time. Great bell tent, high quality produce in the shop and catering van, superb fire pit. And loads of space to run around and have fun. A place to live in the moment and make memories that last forever.
Lovely & peaceful place.
A lovely warm welcome, all staff were extremely helpful. Brilliantly well stocked shop. Lovely high quality, free range food van. Huge pitches, plenty of space for the dog who loved being allowed to roam free and meet other doggie campers. The kids had a blast, though we didn't see much of them. They were off most of the weekend on the amazing mountain bike trails. Facilities are basic but very clean. Would recommend and hope to visit again.
A lovely team and a fantastic campsite in a beautiful part of the world. Thanks so much for a fab 3 nights in one of your great bell tents. The boys & I loved it and will definitely be back - we’ve barely got home and the boys are already asking when we’re returning! Have a great month.
Lovely & peaceful place.
A really warm welcome with very helpful and friendly staff. Huge pitches, the dog loved the free roaming and met lots of other doggie campers. An excellent and well stocked shop considering its a pop up site. Loved the free range food van. Had a great Mediterranean wrap and lovely breakfast. Kids also loved the burgers. Great location for mountain biking. We didn't see the kids (4 boys aged 13 yrs) for hours. Facilities are basic but very clean. A really lovely campsite, would recommend and love to come back.
Well organised, great facilities
Pop up campsite open until end August. Great location next to Cannock chase forest. Roomy and great facilities. Very clean toilet and showers. Tent shop selling fresh veg, basic foods and regatta camping equipment and accessories and ice cream 😋. High end burger van selling quality fast food and hot drinks. Run by a group of very helpful and friendly folk. Excellent and we’d return x
Great campsite. Clean toilets and showers. Excellent value too. Thank you to the team of helpful staff who sited us quickly.
Really beautiful position. The owner was a really nice gentleman and very helpful. This is a basic site but I found all the services to be adequate for my needs. Clean toilets and showers. Just the sort of site I like.
Everything just as described
We have just come back from a wonderful weekend at Cannock Chase which was no doubt helped by the good weather! The initial booking was easy, the welcoming on arrival was good and set the scene for a relaxing visit. The bell tent was clean and tidy as was the site which was well managed with all facilities clean and functioning. Overall we were very pleased and look forward to visiting again next year.
Fabulous Find !
Wow ! Great location for Cannock Chase forest with all the activities including Forest Live concerts. Large pitches with lots of space. Showers were warm and toilets were clean. Would highly recommend, we will be back.
it was nice and relaxing and friendly staff
friendly staff and right near where we needed to go. fab place to visit
Lovely relaxed site with no pitch sizes or marking out....... you literally pitch where you like & take up as much room as you like! Plenty of space for kids to run & play. Opposite a big country park with go ape, cycle hire (mountain bikes), walks and a cafe. The only downside was the portable showers....... the water temperature was either Baltic or scorching but I did see a plumber working on them on our pack up day. I was not told of any noise rules for the site but in general most campers drastically reduced the noise levels bang on 10pm. There is no ehu which is fine by me....... my teenage son was not so impressed 🤣. I would definitely recommend this site when it is open, which I gather is not permanently.
Great location, plenty of fire pits, brilliant basic experience
We loved this site. It was pretty basic, as we expected based on the descriptions online, but we love this. The portaloos were perfectly adequate and the showers were absolutely fine. There was plenty of space, even on a busy bank holiday Sunday, and loads of fire bowls up for grabs. The location was fantastic, right opposite the forest park - we did the segway experience and had a lovely trail run. Loads of stuff for kids too. The guy taking care of the campsite was friendly and on hand to answer all our questions. We would definitely stay again and wish the owners best of luck in getting more established - although it is already great as it is!
Lovely location and views
I wasn’t expecting quite such a basic site. There are no proper facilities at all. The is a trailer with chemical loos and some portaloos. The showers were in portaloo cabins and there were only 2 showers and I would guess at least 300 people. There was nowhere to wash dishes etc. It is fantastically close to Birches Visitor centre but also next to a noisy road. It was lovely to have the fire pits and the site attracted a real mix of people which did mean some loud music late into the night which is not so fab with young children. We actually had a fantastic time but would not go again. It was more like a £5-10 a night place and so in my opinion overpriced for such basic facilities.
The campsite was in the heart of the forest near the visitors center, loads of walking paths and bike trails to do and beautiful views all around. the location of the campsite was perfect as like i have said opposite the Forrest, a Pub with good food and good drink choice was 10 minute walk away and it was also easy to find and pitch up. when we arrived we were greeted by the site owner who gave us our fire pit and wood, told us about the area, things to do where to eat ect ... and he would check up on us two or three times a day to see everything was good. overall great site :)
Beautiful, basic site with camp fires
Well located site with plenty of space so you aren't disturbed by other campers. Facilities are definitely basic, but perfectly adequate, and being able to have a camp fire is lovely! The owner was very helpful and friendly when needed, but otherwise left us to get on with it (perfect!). Would highly recommend for a weekend trip.
Basic site with gorgeous views and in a great location
We had a fantastic stay at Chase camping over the bank holiday weekend. Basic site but with everything we needed for a lovely stay including loads of space for the children to play and a shower once we worked out that was what the disabled toilet cubicle was. It was a lovely atmosphere at the site in the evening with all the fires going; the fire pits and wood were a perfect addition to our stay. The campsite couldn't be better placed for access to Birches Valley where we spent every day of our stay. One evening we had a lovely walk through the woods to the Horn Inn. We will be back next year.
