Camping here is basic to say the least. There are no toilets or showers, so you will need to bring your own chemical toilet facilities with you – this means a portable chemical toilet for tenters as well as caravanners. Water taps, rubbish bins and chemical waster water disposal points are on the campsite. Campfires are not permitted.
Campers with their own toilet facilities (tents, campervans, caravans...) are welcome and dogs are permitted. Campers expecting on-site facilities, however, should think again.
Cannock Chase Forrest Centre (03000 674340; one mile away) offers activities including, Go Ape (08450 949253; Treetop Adventure and Forest Segway activities), Cannock Chase mountain bike trails (some of the most celebrated in the country), numerour walking trails for abilities and 'Forest Live' concerts in the outdoors (see their online calendar for details). Further afield, the campsite is also very close to the National Trust's Shugborough Hall (01889 880160), which boasts a working farm, walled garden, a museum and an excellent model farm.
Food & Drink
Grounds Café Birches Valley (01889 574475) down the road at the Birches Valley Visitor Centre serves light lunch options, snacks, drinks and ice creams, while, in the opposite direction, there's also a quirky café near the Aspen car park (Fallow Forest; 07830 775556). The nearest pub is The Horns Inn (01889 586000) two miles away.

Beautiful spacious surroundings
We met our friends there so we're easily able to park up besides each other in our campers and even had a picnic bench to ourselves. The surroundings are stunning and you are at the start of lots of trails and walks to countryside centres. We ordered a takeaway which was delivered at the gate too. Basic facilities, but on site wardens added reassurance and the bins etc which were on site were clean. Would return!
A site for those looking for tranquility
Flexible pitch options, just enough facilities for us and a very tranquil feel even when busy.
We had an enjoyable few days at the campsite. Really friendly and helpful Rangers, great biking, good trails, useful information in the welcome emails. The only improvement we would like is a toilet block. We will certainly return.
The campsite was quiet and relaxed. Warden was very helpful and pointed out the camp rules in detail. Took advantage of the restaurants on the site list and had a most enjoyable evening. Everything we wanted. A central meeting place and lots of walking and bike trails. Relaxing M
Relaxing stay in beautiful woodlands.
The wardens were so helpful. Recommending places to eat and visit as well as knowledge of the wildlife on Cannock Chase. Plenty of hand sanitizer around the site. The site had a locked gate which meant everyone felt safe and the children could play without worrying about traffic. We certainly will be returning.
Bank Holiday Peace
First time at Tackeroo and we will definitely go back. Clear instructions when booking, easy to use code and plenty of sheltered or open spots. What a find - during one of busiest weekends of the year so far we were able to pitch up in the sunshine, with mainly bird song to listen to and with plenty of space around us. Kevin was super helpful and having a number in case of emergency was reassuring. Biking and walking trails on the doorstep were great and we went a different way every day. To improve things we would suggest a faster running tap for toilet emptying & (not to do with site) a stop on racing around roads nearby. Thanks for a great weekend 👍
Beautiful & Tranquil
Beautiful site, basic camping, you can park where you like so you do not feel hemmed in. Ideal for mountain bikers as you are positioned in a bike trail. Idyllic scenery and very peaceful
Wild and wonderful
First time at Tackeroo and it certainly won’t be my last. Really liked the pitch where you like concept, tired of marked out gravel pitches. Parked my VW T5 in a superb spot with an abundance of space which was a luxury, especially on a bank holiday weekend. Perfect back to nature camping in a picturesque setting. Only piece of advice, bring heavy duty pegs
Absolutely beautiful setting amongst tall trees. Well kept camping area. When you want peace and tranquillity it’s waiting here for you, and if you fancy some excitement there’s lots to do a stone throw away. Lovely walks and cycle routes. A wonderful break away.
Lovely site, a little expensive given the extremely basic facilities. Wardens were polite and understanding even though we were slightly noisy in the evening. It would benefit from toilet and shower facilities and is such a shame u can’t bbq or have a campfire.
Forrest Camping at its best
This place is a dream if you like to go camping and get back to nature. The site has no set pitches and you camp where you like between the tree's. Wildlife is just on your doorstep and you are at the heart of the Cannock chase area with easy access to lots of different styles of walks. The site must have been an old military establishment. Scattered around the site are concrete footings to what must have been old buildings. These have been down so long now that the grass has grown over them but good to know if the weather decided to soak the ground. As an avid biker this place is like a dream site for me. So many times you have to travel from your site to the trail but not here. You are literally right in the middle of the follow the dog trail. Don't expect a shower block, don't expect a site shop/office. Don't expect electric. I class these all as positives and take you back to what camping is all about. Mobile phone signal is great on EE and in places I even got 5G. The television mast is not far away which meant good TV signal on a little aerial. Good for keeping the little ones entertained if the weather is bad and late of a night. Staff are really friendly and want to help. Whilst there is no office they have a 24 hours mobile number to call if there are any issues.
Just what we needed
The campsite has nothing and because of that, has everything we wanted. Nestled amongst the trees, other campers are seen but not too close despite people being able to pitch up where they want. As others have commented, for us two it was a bit pricey but in all honesty, the price was worth it to be in the wood, near the deer and with access to many walking /bike trails. The car was not needed. Try not to arrive late like us, it’s pitch black and very easy to miss the entrance (the sat nav code took us to the visitors centre but the campsite name worked). Make sure you have the code for the lock to get through the gate. The only improvement would be recycling points.
Lovely and peaceful
This is a nice site in the forest; very peaceful, surrounded by trees and nature. It's a basic site with few facilities but very convenient for the cycle trails at Cannock Chase. My one gripe was there appeared to be no recycling facilities or signage to say where the nearest recycling facilities were. We love nature and try to recycle as much as possible. It was sad to see the bins there full of plastic, cardboard and bottles; all of which could be recycled.
Expensive for two, good value for large groups
Very peaceful and stunning area, better now the gate has a lock as used to get lots of cars driving around, great place for a group to camp but no facilities, we will go again
Amazing weekend away
Perfect weekend away! The campsite is stunning and my dogs had the best time. So peaceful and so many stunning walks for the dogs and family. I loved waking up there, was so sad to leave and can't wait to go back! Definitely would recommend going, everyone was so friendly and the campsite is even great for small children. Walking distance to Marquis Drive visitors centre too!
Fabulous camping weekend
Spent 2 nights here with my son, his partner, the 2 grandkids, ages 1 and 3, and my french bulldog. The weather was amazing and theres so much for the kids to keep occupied and at 1 wirh nature. Its so peacefull. Cant wait to go back... Well worth a camping trip.
Lovely spot !
Old skool site , basic facilities, very clean . Great for dogs , bike riding and walks . The trees surrounding are brilliant you really are in the middle of the chase ! We did go in September so it was quiet and very spaced out from others which was great Will visit again . Thanks
Excellent 'back to nature' camping site
The site is gorgeous. Much bigger than any of the images had led me to believe and easy to find your own space even if it was busy (on our visit it wasn't at all). Positioned on the red and blue cycling trails as well as walking routes you'll have regular traffic through the site, but it adds to the charm for me. Plenty of passers by stopped to ask us about the site and how to book on, so it is obviously a well kept secret to the masses. I took my children and we made use of the blue cycling trails which are very child friendly. The site was peaceful at night (I dare say it was us making the most noise). The site is very back to basics which is what we were looking for, with just fresh water and waste disposal on site, but this might not suit everyone. I'd say it is better suited to caravans/motorhomes than tents, but we managed just fine although I'd recommend pegs suited to hard ground if you have a tent or awning to peg down. Also note the no fires rule which is understandable, although you are allowed a gas cooker. The only downside was the unpredictable nature of the great British weather :-)
