Family-friendly camping and glamping with stunning views of the Shropshire Hills

Perfectly poised between the Welsh Border towns of Oswestry and Shrewsbury, Big Bear Lodge offers a secluded camping and glamping retreat in one England's true regional treasures. With the rivers Vyrnwy and Severn close by and the Shropshire Hills alluringly visible on the horizon, guests have no end of scenic walks to enjoy (over 3,500 miles-worth to be precise). Climbing the local slopes from this four acre base in the village of Melverely, affable host Cassie reckons the breathtaking views might just be the best in Shropshire. It's tough to disagree.

Comprising a scattering of grass camping pitches, hardstandings for the campervan contingent, pre-pitched tents for any guyrope greenhorns and a quartet of cute Canadian-style glamping pods, there's something for everyone at Big Bear Lodge, including a bed and breakfast onsite too. The latter, a titular wooden lodge, has a luxury ski chalet feel complete with roaring log fire and sun terrace for soaking up the hillside views. Keep your eyes peeled for red kites and buzzards circling in the thermals overhead.

Facilities-wise, this place boasts all the... ahem... bare necessities you're likely to need. There's fresh water adjacent to the camping pitches, a new amenities block with three showers including one for disabled guests and modern features like heated towel rails and rainfall shower heads. Motorhomes and caravans, meanwhile, are well catered for with hook-ups and chemical disposal provided. But it's the four pods that steal the show. Naturally insulated with local sheep's wool, these cosy cocoons make a great wintertime cabin for couples or an equally lovely summer getaway with the french windows flung open to let the sunshine in.

With its prime location, Big Bear Lodge offers opportunities in abundance for exploring this, arguably, less well known region. Despite being the 'gateway to Wales' and no secret to the rambling world, Shropshire boasts one of the lowest populations per square mile in England, making it a peaceful pocket of bucolic bliss, yet brimming with historical intrigue. There are more than 20 Iron Age hill forts, some 30 castles and numerous abbeys dotted throughout the county, not to mention bohemian towns like Bishops Castle and medieval Shrewsbury to explore. For an ultimate escape within easy reach of cities such as Manchester and Birmingham, South Shropshire is low in traffic and high in spiritually enriching nature. It’s an enviable paradise for locals and an ideal camping climate for the rest of us.

An amenities block with 3 showers (including 1 for disabled guests), heated towel rails, rainfall shower heads and washing-up facilities. Pods are fully insulated, carpeted, double glazed (with blinds), and come with lighting, heating, power, a porch and decking.

Glampers, families, groups, dogs...

There's no shortage of scenic walks to enjoy. The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a short drive away to the south, while closer to camp the the Breddein Hills and Admiral Rodney's Pilar are within sight. From 1200ft up, the panoramic views over Shropshire and the Welsh Borders are spectacular. A visit to nearby Shrewsbury should also be on your list, not least for its fabulous castle (01743 358516) and the Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery (01743 258885). If some well deserved r'n'r is on the agenda, Big Bear Lodge have teamed up with nearby Rowton Castle (01743 884 044), a stunning 17th century Grade II listed venue that offers swimming pools, jacuzzis, tennis, squash, spa and beauty treatments. Big Bear Lodge guests can claim discounted day passes by pre-arrangement when you book.

Food & Drink

Many visitors to Big Bear Lodge visit or order takeaway from the  SmokeStop (01743 851944) in Shrewsbury serves up stateside comfort food smoked low and slow in their on site smokers for up to 14 hours. Lepone's Ristorante Italiano (01691 659965) comes highly recommended. This family-run establishment boasts authentic Italian cuisine served with flair. The Royal Hill (01743 741242) in nearby Edgerley is a local institution with a menu of hearty pub grub favourites and a fantastic location beside the River Severn. Casketeers will be pleased with their impressive array of real ales.

The Owner Says

Your little bears might not want to leave. Big Bear Lodge is a Shrewsbury site with what the owners reckon just might be among the best views in Shropshire – and it's in a spectacularly secluded countryside location where your young can run around and go spotting badgers, foxes, bats, squirrels and even the resident cuckoo that arrives each May. A flock of feathered visitors also flit around this calmly quiet site, including red kites, woodpeckers, swifts, buzzards and even some tame robins – we spy photo opps.

You will hear the local owls hooting at night, and if it's a cloud-free evening you can settle down under the skies for a spot of peaceful stargazing: no light pollution or traffic noise here.

The Big Bear facilities include fresh water adjacent to pitches, a new amenities block with three showers including one for disabled guests, heated towel rails, rainfall shower heads and washing-up facilities with hot and cold water. Dogs are welcome on site but must be kept on leads.

Big Bear Lodge is also near where the Vyrnwy and Severn rivers meet so has a wealth of walks very close by – and Shropshire has over 3500 miles' worth of hikes if you want to take things a bit further.

We loved our Bank Holiday weekend stay at Big Bear Lodge with our two dogs. The site is set in peaceful countryside. We had Mammoth pod that was very comfortable, spotless and warm. It had everything you needed to barbecue. I would highly recommend purchasing some logs and lighting the firepit. The showers and toilets were very clean with plenty of hand sanitiser available. We had the full English breakfast which was epic! Beautifully cooked and hot on delivery. Overall we had a very relaxing weekend and would definitely book again. Thank you Cassie.

Tranquil weekend - just what we needed

We stayed at Big Bear Lodge for my birthday weekend and we could not fault it. From booking and all the upfront information provided by Cassie, to the extra touches made on the site such as breakfast, bbq and fire provisions and even a freezer with ice for our Gin 😊 Beautifully kept accomodation, beautiful location, could not fault! We will definitely be booking a return visit.

Good family getaway

We managed to get a half term family trip in at this site and we were impressed. The Glamping pod was warm, large enough for our needs and had good facilities for using a log burner out front in the evenings. The toilet and washing facilities were also clean and well-equipped. There were a few niggles associated with the COVID restrictions, but these can hardly be held against the site. Most of our daytime activities involved driving somewhere, although there is a decent sized field for kids to run around in. Would go again.

great few days!

Cassi the owner was very accommodating, we had a great pitch. the toilets and showers were really clean, all in all a lovely campsite can not wait to return!!

Great Weekend!

We stayed at Wolf’s Paw glamping pod and the weekend was so great from start to finish. Easy check in/check out with clean facilities and the location is within easy reach of lots to do/pubs & restaurants by car. The pod itself was spacious and had everything we needed. It was a lovely, little break!

Beautiful and peaceful setting with perfectly formed pods

We stayed for two nights in the Mammoth Pod. It was spot on for our two young children (6 & 3), my wife and I. The fridge was bigger than expected and there was plenty of cutlery etc. The triple bunk bed was comfortable and it was so nice to wake up on a morning and open the front doors to nice green garden area which leads onto fields of sheep and hills in the distance. The shower and toilet facilities are nice and close to the pods, so not too far to walk for that night time trip. The only reason I've not given 5 stars is that the shower was great for the first minute but then the power dropped loads so I was left trying to wash soap off with a dribble of water. But other than that the facilities are great. The small onsite honesty shop was really well stocked with all sorts of things, including beer, which is a big bonus. I would certainly recommend it to any friends or family looking for a glamping trip.

Beautiful place off the beaten track

Our family of 4 stayed in one of the pods. Lovely and clean inside. The toilets and showers are well looked after and maintained. Nicest shower I’ve had while camping. Fire baskets and small shop are a lovely touch. I would definitely recommend this place

This place is just what you need. Shhh don't tell just ANYONE - all the campers were lovely people too

Big Bear Lodge is off the beaten track. It is FANTASTIC, as long as that appeal to you. The campsite is flat. That might sound like a given, but it really matters and I've been to so many bumpy, slope-y pitches that this was welcome. Gorgeous view (specially from pitch A if you are tenting it). The shower is hot, clean and has good pressure. The whole toilet area is very clean and Covid-aware without being OTT. The pods look lovely, but I like canvas and it was just perfect. Small campsite and both times I've stayed we've had the most respectful neighbours. I know this can't be guaranteed. Water access fine. Fire-pits really really nice touch. Great value for money too. Warm croissants ordered and they were brought to the tent door. Omg - they were delicious! I will be back next year, poss with the rest of the wider family.

Beautiful location, not enough facilities

The camp was clean and well kept, and a very tranquil spot. However, with only 3 showers (1 for men, 1 for women, 1 for family) and a single dish washing sink, the camp left a little bit to be desired. The camp was no where near capacity yet there was insufficient water for the shower (cut out mid shampooing) and for washing up (dribble into bowl). Having experienced a wide range of camping over many years, from single tent, through family tents and on to motorhome, I think a few more showers and a larger washing-up area would improve things.

A great glamping experience

My son and I stayed for two nights in Eagles Nest camping pod. Despite some very dramatic thunder and lightning the pod was cosy and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay very much and found the facilities and shop very well organised, clean and useful. The location is also great - remote enough to feel out in the wilds but well placed for nearby pubs and takeaways. There were many local attractions just short drive away - we found it hard to choose which to visit on this short stay and will return to explore further. Thank you for providing such a well presented campsite!

Perfect for basic camping (but there was more luxurious accommodation on offer too)

It's a perfect view, a small friendly site. I know this can't be guaranteed but the guests were so respectful, friendly and there weren't many of them as the site only has pitches for about 8 'parties'. The facilities were very very clean and safe (considering the context atm). I stayed four nights and loved every minute. There is a well-stocked store and the ability to have a fire pit. Just lovely. Just perfect.

Great camping pod and location

I stayed in the little bear pod with 3 children. It was big enough to comfortably fit 4 air beds. Outside we had a decked area with chairs, a fire pit and a picnic table. It was lovely to sit outside. The children enjoyed the outdoor space and toasting marshmallows. Showers were hot and the whole place is very clean and tidy. It was a very relaxing stay. There is plenty to do in the area- the site is simple to find in a great location only 10 mins from the A5 so easy to get around. Children spent much of the journey home talking about ‘next time’.

Genuinely everything we wanted. The most basic pod of the 4 available, it was a significant "upgrade" on camping at no great increase in cost (during these covd19 times - electric pitches seem very expensive. This was very reasonable for £50). The site has clean toilets/showers/cleaning facilities. The shop is well stocked & the site is quiet with outstanding views of the Breidden Hill range. The area is awesome and we will 100% be paying a return visit.

My wife & I spent a long weekend at this site from Friday 24 to Monday 27th July 2020. We stayed in one of the Glamping Pods which was fantastic. The site it's self is very well maintained with very clean toilet & shower facilities. The owners have done a very good job in applying hand sanitizer and other necessities to help with the currant circumstances we are faced with, which make customers feel safe. The small but well stocked shop is a great help to those who may have forgotten something. I found booking the accommodation very easy and email coms between my self and the site were very good. All questions answered quickly. There are a number of places to visit in the area of interest and the country side views are fantastic. We would definitely recommend Big Bear lodge Camping & Glamping site and will hopefully return again in the very near future.

Wonderful get away from it all

Absolutely loved this site. Clean toilet and showers. The little honesty shop was a god send when I realised I had no lighter. The marshmallows in the fire pit was a lovely touch. I would recommend this site to anyone and will be back.

All I can say ....... I had the best time. Went on my own & felt really safe, I highly recommend people going away on their own was so relaxing. Ordered the breakfast sandwich, was lovely fresh bread and very filling. Will definitely go back next year.

Amazing experience

We honestly had THE best time staying here. We were fortunate enough to be the only people staying in the pods on our visit which made our time there even more special. We had all the grounds to play balls games and it just felt like we were in our own little bubble. The weather held out so watching the stars in the evening with a roaring camping fire was just magical. The toilets ans facilities were impeccably clean and tidy. We would 100000% be rebooking to come again!

Fabulous location and hospitality

We hired two pods for a special weekend trip and they didn’t disappoint. Eagle’s Nest and Wolf’s paw are perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors but after a long drive don’t want to faff with putting up a tent. Peaceful site, clean toilets, showers. Great delivery service to pods, if required. BBQ and fire pit for each pod. We had a fab time. Local walks, visit to Shrewsbury. Definitely recommend.

Great little site but with a ‘but’

We had the camping field to ourselves when we stayed (I think we may have been the only ones at the lodge being mid week in early October) and the hosts could not have been more welcoming, nothing appeared too much trouble. As mentioned by others the personal delivery service was great, hot chocolate and marshmallows at night and breakfast in the morning with much more on offer. The facilities are spotlessly clean with hookup and water right next to the van although I didn’t notice a washing machine/dryer nor a freezer for ice packs. For us personally one of the major requirements is a view/setting and Big Bear doesn’t have this. It is a field bounded on three sides by a hedge and the house with the fourth side looking out over more fields with the Welsh hills in the (far) distance. Don’t get me wrong as this would still leave the majority of campsites standing but just didn’t ‘float our camper’ and therefore, regrettably, this is a 4 rather than a 5 star site.

Great friendly site

A small well run site with plenty of open space. The added extras and personal touches from the owners are well thought out and obviously by people who enjoy the camp fire style life themselves. Even though they were full and the rainfall that weekend was exceptionally heavy the facilities were spotless. Would stay again if we were in the area. My kind of campsite

Outstanding stay

We visited Big Bear Lodge during January and stayed in one of there luxury glamping pods. WOW this pod was amazing, very warm and comfortable. We also had to try there breakfast and it didn't disappoint! Cassie and Gary were very accommodating and nothing was to much trouble. I would recommend hiring a fire pit as it was great roasting marshmallows of an evening. We are already planning our next visit.
