Kittisford Barton Glamping

Somerset, Somerset, England
1 acre hosted by Lantern B.
Achingly beautiful countryside with 21st-century accommodation
Nowhere typifies the British countryside quite like Kittisford Barton. On the western edge of Somerset, this newly opened glampsite sits within 260 acres of organic agricultural splendor. Fields fold into woodland, and ponds pepper the landscape. Tiny streams trickle water towards the River Tone, surely the wiggliest waterway in the entire southeast, and mature, bushy hedgerows segment the fields into a patchwork of varied colour. If Somerset wants to lose its stereotype of farmers in their flat caps, this place isn’t doing it any favours.

Yet the site is, in fact, strikingly modern. Not in an urban, gritty sense, but simply in terms of the luxuries on offer. Low key camping this is not. There are five safari tents in total, pitched in a large open field, giving both a sense of space and privacy. Each of the tents sleeps up to six people, with three separated bedrooms: a double room, a twin room and a children’s room with bunk beds. On top of this, there’s also a large open plan living area with a dining space and a couple of sofas to relax on after a day exploring the surroundings. The kitchen (there are gas hobs and all the cooking utensils you could need) offers real convenience, while at the heart of it all is that one essential piece of glamping kit – a toasty log burning stove heating the entire tent with ease.

The location is certainly a boon for kids – think den building in the woods and evening barbeques on the safari tent veranda – but don’t be fooled by the rural atmosphere it maintains. While Kittisford Barton enjoys the peace and tranquility that comes from being in the middle of the countryside, it is, in fact, only a ten minute drive to junction 26 of the M5, a real convenience if you’re a stickler for itineraries.

There’s a Go Ape in Haldon Forest so families can monkey their way across the treetops using zip wires and climbing nets, while the beaches of the north coast are just 20 minutes in the car. Exeter, meanwhile, is a speedy zip down the motorway – great for rainy days hiding in galleries and museums – while Exmoor, the closest of the lot, is the best when the sun’s out – a staggering natural playground and one of the UK’s quietest National Parks.

The organic farm alone is 260 acres of ponds, woodlands, fields and trails for keen adventurers to wander. Guests to the site will be able to see the farm's animal inhabitants, meet the friendly goats or collect eggs from the chickens that live in the orchard – a firm favourite with all ages!
