Middle Stone Farm

Family-sized luxury accommodation and a remote farm location.

It seems fitting that Middle Stone Farm have named their three brand new safari tents after birds of prey – Buzzard, Hawk and Kestrel. Positioned between Exmoor and the Quantock Hills, this remote patch of rural Somerset is an ideal sanctuary for wildlife. A resident barn owl hoots from the old barn opposite Catherine and Patrick’s farmhouse and house martins arrive beneath the eaves every summer, twigs in their clutch, ready to start building. Then there are the more catered-for critters: rare-breed pigs, sheep, chickens and alpacas grazing the meadow. All give the farm it’s unpretentious, backcountry atmosphere – an agricultural escape that’s ideal for families.

The safari tents are firmly at the upper end of the luxury scale, fully kitted out with everything you need, and housed beneath the forest green wingspan of their canvas roofs. The kitchen has cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils – best put to work on the artisan wood-burning oven – and there’s even a small fridge located beneath the aptly named ‘cupboard bed’: a two-person cubbyhole in the wall that children particularly adore. Each safari tent has an en-suite shower room at the far end and a south-facing sun deck out front, plus a bubbling wood-fired hot tub you can relax in.

In its own private corner of the farm, a wooden glamping cabin offers an alternative to the three safari tents, and can be booked on its own, or if you're quick, the tents and cabin can all be booked together to accomodate a larger group. The whitewashed deckhouse sleeps a family of four in a king-sized bed and separate bunkroom, while a large, open plan living space has a slightly retro feel. It makes a nice contrast with the modern shower room and a smart new wood-burner, adding its glowing warmth to the light and airy interior.

Evening campfires remind guests that, despite all the luxuries, this is still very much a camping holiday. You can purchase meat from the farm shop too, if you want something to sear over the crackling flames. For a proper pint, though, it’s a fair trek along the Somerset footpaths to the nearest local watering hole. But then, the real gift of this campsite is its off-the-beaten track location. Hop in to the car to get to the beaches of the Bristol Channel a few miles to the north, Exmoor National Park to the West, the Quantock Hills to the east and the market town of Taunton just south. Off the track it may be, but you needn’t drive far for heaps of options.

The Owner Says

(info supplied by the campsite)

Middle Stone Farm is owned by Patrick and Catherine Heard.  As well as managing our glamping, cottages and farm Patrick is a wine merchant and Catherine paints when there's time.We moved to our farm with a dream of setting up a sustainable lifestyle and business alongside rearing and growing our own food.  We are passionate about the local area and our lifestyle and love to share it with our guests.  We are always on hand to give local tips on where to go, to avoid the tourist traps and discover special places. With three young children, flocks of chickens, geese, alpaca, sheep, goats, usually some pigs, a dog and a tortoise there is always something going on at our farm!  You can meet the animals, run around the field or simply use the farm as a base to explore beautiful West Somerset, Exmoor and the North Devon coast.

Middle Stone Farm offers three luxury safari lodges each with wonderful large wood fired hot tubs.  Each tent sleeps up to six people plus a cot, they are perfect for families, couples and groups of friends who want to explore the surrounding countryside.   The tents have a king bed, pair of twin beds and a double cabin bedroom made up in advance with cotton bed linen for a good night's sleep. Each canvas lodge has a en-suite shower room and a separate flushing loo and basin within the tent structure, there's no need to traipse across the field in your wellies to a shower block!  Hot water for your shower, basin and kitchen sink is heated by an artisan wood boiler in the en-suite shower room which also heats the bathroom area.  Most of the lighting is via candle power and LED lanterns and the log fires provide the tent with warmth on chilly days.  The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to cook meals, there is also a little retro fridge/freezer to keep things fresh.  We have a little farm shop on-site which sells all kinds of locally produced foods and drinks and everything you need to make breakfast. Each tent is built on a large insulated wooden platform, with a front deck area with seats to relax on and look out towards the hills. Situated in an enclosed three acre field the tents are over 20 metres apart, allowing privacy, but close enough together if you wish to socialise.  Along with the hot tub, each tent has swing ball, a picnic table and tripod barbecue to barbecue your supper and toast marshmallows.  With views over farmland towards Exmoor and the Quantock Hills these upmarket tents have everything you need for a relaxing environmentally conscious stay in the countryside.  We are a family friendly site and welcome children, there is a little climbing frame, swings and ride on tractors within the glamping field, near enough to see your children but far enough away not to hear them too loudly!  Cots, highchairs and toys are available to borrow and we also offer a babysitting service if you would like to go out in the evening.

With views across open farmland dotted with rare breed sheep, geese and alpacas, The Deckhouse is a cosy converted wooden cabin on our farm.  It's the other side of the farm from our glamping tents so ideal if you are looking for a bit of privacy.  It has its own wood fired hot tub and a barbecue and seating area nearby. The cabin sleeps four people, it has a king bed in the main bedroom and a mini bunk room at the other end of the building. The bunk room is very small and has narrow beds suitable for young children.  There is a modern shower room with hot water on demand and a wood fired stove in the middle of the building which heats the building during the winter months.  The Deckhouse has white washed timber walls, an open plan sitting room with a wall mounted television.  The kitchen is equipped with a mini-oven/cooker, microwave, little retro style fridge-freezer and there is a small dining table and chairs.  All the bed linen, towels and firewood are provided by us and we can lend you baby things if you're coming with little ones.

Amazing

Have just returned from a weeks stay at this lovely site. The accommodation was beautiful and lots of thought has gone into what guests may need during their stay. The log burner stove was lovely although alittle hot in the amazing weather we were fortunate enough to have. The children loved the play equipment and especially the goats , spent hours patting and running up and down with them. The honesty shop was a god send and reasonably priced items- you can order fresh bread, fresh meat and has a good selection of wine :0) The location is easy to find and lots to do around the area We are new to glamping have previously camped I would definitely Glamp again after this experience . I found middlestone farm to be an affordable family holiday/ break the prices are not ridicously high which will enable families to enjoy this lovely site year after year

Perfect Deckhouse

We had a great New Year in the Deckhouse. The wood burner keeps it warm and cosy, and the whole place is super clean and really well designed for comfort in a small space. We appreciated the family friendly touches, and we had excellent communication with the owners throughout, whilst being left to enjoy our holiday. It was so good we have already booked again for next year!
