Barrow Lane, North Wootton, Shepton Mallet BA4 4HL
Once upon a time, an enchanting couple created a peaceful outdoor living area that was both safe and comfortable for young families and lots of fun for children. They called this place Greenacres – a gigantic four-and-a-half-acre field with just 40 pitches spread around the perimeter. The entire central swathe, is reserved for various dragon-slaying and spell-casting playtime activities, which are run by the Lazy Dayzee Crew. They pitch up here at weekends and during the week during school holidays – thereby giving mums and dads an opportunity to kick back without the little ones for an hour or so. When that’s not happening, there’s the occasional 30-a-side football match taking place in the field fit for Wembley, and perhaps a spot of ping-pong (aka wiff-waff), too. There’s no visual electronic entertainment here, just a host of classic old-fashioned toys and activities, such as Wendy houses, see-saws, swings and bikes. There's also a carefully controlled, but very wide selection of books for both the children and the adults – who will have plenty of time for stress-free reading whilst the small darlings are busy exhausting themselves in the middle of the field.
Some may find the no dogs rule here a bit restrictive but when a site is this committed to providing good, healthy, energetic leisure activities for children then it becomes a necessity.
If all this has left you imagining a site full of noisy spellbound kids chaotically running through the place among all the cars and tents, then relax. All the magic takes place in car- and tent-free zones. Except, that is, at sundown on summer evenings, when the lanes around the campsite come alive with magic beetles, and they host their ever-popular Glow Worm Safaris. During the school holidays this site is probably not best suited to those quiet, reclusive couples looking for a bit of solitude, but in early September, when the Cool Camping operatives arrived, Greenacres was P&Q personified.
There’s plenty of fun to be had in the environs of this fairy-tale campsite, as well. The moody Somerset Levels provide excellent walking opportunities or, if you fancy something that doesn’t require wearing boots, then hippy-central Glastonbury is only three miles away – and just the spot for picking up a magic wand...
The Owner SaysFamily campsite near Glastonbury, Wells & Shepton Mallet, Somerset. AA Small Campsite of the year 2014. Smiley faces and lots of space.
A lovely site
A great site with great facilities that would suit all types including families. The owners were very friendly and accommodating.
We were the only 3 people on site but I'm guessing there would be a queue for the showers during busier periods.
The ONLY down side we experienced is that the firepit offered for hire is an old washing machine drum. These look the part but do not let out any heat at all. Hire is available for £20 for 1-3 night and comes with a bag of wood. If you just wanted the one night then the price was the same. We only needed one night so it ended up costing £30 by the time we finished cooking on it.
That equates to £5 a night hire so why not just set this as your rate? The firewood bags are £5 each and whilst the wood is dry, there isn't much of it.
Bring your own would be my advice.
We have just stayed at green acres campsite for 3 nights. Had a lovely welcome from the owners they couldn't do enough for u. Gave us information on places to visit, handy to buy the logs from them for our campfire and the hot crossiants delivered to our tent on Sunday morning were so yummy that was a lovely touch. Thanks for having us n looking after us.

We have just returned from a few nights at Greenacres, we all had a great time and only left the site once as the children were more than happy at the play area having fun with the other kids. The site was clean and the owners friendly, the pitch was large enough for our tent, gazebo & car. Sitting as a family roasting marshmallows over the campfire, can't beat it!
We would both like to say a huge thank you for our comfortable stay on such a lovely site in a beautiful part of the Somerset area. Your welcome and facilities were perfect for our Glastonbury trip and we are hoping we can be as lucky next year when we apply for tickets as we will definitely want to stay at Greenacres again - this time maybe with kids and friends! We can not speak highly enough of the comfort of our stay as the facilities were of the highest quality one could wish for when camping for the festival - thank you again for putting us up in such a great spot and at such a fair and affordable rate too.
A Proper Treat
This is definitely the cleanest and best maintained campsite we have visited. Extremely well organised, but also very friendly, they genuinely seem to want you to have the best time while there. The children's play area meant that the children had a ball, with all the children, young and old, playing happily until dark. Really good sized pitches meant we were undisturbed by our neighbours and it was such a joy that there are no dogs as it meant it was far more peaceful that usual and that running around on the lush grass could really be enjoyed. For me, the facilities were perfect, fridges, constant hot water and checked and cleaned several times a day, but no fuss.

Great little place
Great place. Great owners. Clean. Will visit again.
This camp site was just what I was looking for, quite, basic and clean. Fantastic location to reach Bath, Bristol and Cheddar; though I wish there was a closer local pub! The facilities were fantastic. Warm showers, clean toilets, lights in the bathrooms and fridges, genius idea! The Pitch sizes are brilliant and if you have children there is a play area and a massive field for them to run about in. The Staff were extremely friendly and even offer freshly baked croissants on a Sunday morning. I would highly recommend this camp site and will defiantly be visiting again!
I echo what everyone else has said about this site; spacious pitches, close to attractions, great hands on owners etc.
The only things that let it down and lose a star in my opinion is the showers and general washing up area, they were awful, in that they had only 4 showers on a site that has 40 odd pitches, the tiniest shower trays imaginable meaning you couldn't turn around because if you did the shower curtain would stick to you. There was no space to put your change of clothes, toiletaries bag etc apart from a couple of hooks provided, some shelves would have been great. Although the showers were free the timeout on them was pretty short - I had to press it 3 times whilst just washing my hair! Who'd have thought that I'd have been so bothered about the showers being so poorly designed but there you it makes the difference between 4 and 5 stars. The washing up area is functional at best, could be massively improved but IMO more important to improve the showers first.
Expectations were high, but sadly did not meet expectations.
Yes the pitches are large and even with the site full, did not feel crowded.
The kids could play and mingle in the centre of the large field. (Not the smaller field)
The toilets were clean.
The showers were very small and being a family centric site, too small for parent and child to shower, also fixed temperature, too hot for small children.
Two industrial sized sinks with one draining board ( not enough), drinking water tap also in this area, not convenient.
No animals, no local traders, lazy Dayzee crew cater for pre school / infants and predominantly girls, and expensive.
A level site, but the pitches were not level.
We didn't want to leave
Wanted to write a review about this place as we loved it so much but the previous reviewer has pretty much summed it up. So ditto!
There may have been better pitches, but we thought ours was perfect! Everyone pitches around the edge of the field, and we had space for our 10 man tent and car, with room to spare. There also was sufficient shelter from the hedge and canopy of trees that we could still cook outside on the rainy days. We weren't lucky enough to hire a fire-pit, but it was lovely to see the fires dotted around the site. Both our boys made friends on the first day, and we sat and contentedly watched them play in the centre of the field, and we were delighted when at evening-time, the owners came across to the field and asked "anyone for rounders?" Whether they were playing ball games in the centre of the field, or using the play area, we could have eyes on them.
We only left the site on one day, to visit Glastonbury Abbey, but were perfectly content with staying put the rest of the time. There is a mobile shop that drives round the field morning and evening, and the onsite shop sells wood, ice creams and essentials. The owners are hard-working, constantly seen attending to matters on site, but always with a friendly nod and "hello" to whichever camper passes their path. The showers are definitely on the small side, but we managed. Importantly, they - along with the toilets - are clean.
Although the rules ask for quiet between 11pm - 7am, we found the site quietened down around half nine / ten o'clock. This site is perfect for an easy going, family camping break. We will certainly return - I suppose that's the best recommendation really!
One of the loveliest sites you'll ever go to. We've been as a family and in a group many times and we keep going back every year. Massive pitches with room for the biggest tent with no fuss or extra charges. Love the green space in the middle where kids of all ages can play safely with tents pitched round the outside so you can watch your wee ones without actually having to move! Our lot are old enough now to want to explore and buried themselves in the hedgerows or went to visit the lambs and chickens. There are loads of fridges and freezers so you don't even have to think too hard about ice packs and cool boxes. The loos, showers and wash-up are always spotlessly clean with loads of piping hot water. This year we hired the event canopy which was great when it rained and equally good when the kids wanted to shelter from the sun. There are lots of places to visit nearby but the funny thing is, when the sun shines, you won't want to shift and neither will the kids. Greenacres never fails to leave us feeling completely chilled and lovely.
I echo the other recent reviews, this is a fantastic site! Will definitely come back.
Just got back from my fourth visit to Greenacres and each time has been fantastic - The site has 40 pitches for tents, trailer tents and motor home (7m under) and are all of generous sizes. I am able to pitch my Vango Icarus 500 with canopy and a Coleman event shelter with still space for the car. There is electric hook up if needed and there is ample space for the kids to run round playing ball games, flying kites or on just playing on the swings, playground etc. The site has all the necessary amenities including 4 showers that are free - separate WC's for male and female and a covered washing up area everything is always clean and I have never had to complain about anything. Kids love this place as well as couples as there seems to be a mix of children having fun and adults being able to relax in peace (how can this exist). The site allows open fires which is great for the cooler nights and that real camping experience and the local shop comes down in the evenings selling lots of local produce including cider and the best rump steaks I have ever tasted. In the morning there is fresh croissants and freshly laid eggs for sale etc what more do you want from a site. In the main holidays there is a kids club which mine love, bike hire is available and the owners Duncan and Mary are great and do as much as possible to make sure you have a great time at the site no matter how long your stay. If you are planning to go in July and August (like me) then you are in for a treat as next to the site is a trail of glow worms (yes worms that glow) that you can try to see in the night which the kids love looking for. I am now booked to go back in August with 2 other families we met last year and are counting down the days to this.
We have just returned from Greenacres for our 1st camping trip since having our children and we were not disappointed with this site. The pitches are very generous so there is plenty of room for everything you need including a gazebo which is allowed at this site free of charge as long as it fits within your pitch. The facilities are fantastically clean and the owners are seen cleaning the site several times a day. This is the perfect family site with a lovely atmosphere, clean, good facilities and a lovely play area for the children. My favourite thing about this site is allocated pitching and the pitches are not crammed together. The owners could easily have more pitches in the middle of the field but instead all pitches are around the outside of the field so there is a fabulous outlook into a big green space for children to play. We will most certainly be visiting again.
We had such a great time at Greenacres, we organised for my 40th Birthday, a weekend for all of our friends and family, about 13 pitches, and a communal tent in the centre, which was a great choice (rented from Greenacres).
Duncan and his family were brilliant at helping us organise beforehand and when we arrived, Duncan was on hand to help it run smoothly, I cannot say enough about how happy we were with the campsite from a kids point of view and also the site itself is beautiful.
Can't wait to return for my 41st!
The lovely thing about this site is the space. They haven't crammed pitches in to every possible space and have left a nice big central field for children to play in. The surroundings are great – mature trees and fields. The site never feels too busy, even when fully booked. Showers are basic and small but fine. In peak season they have a huge bell tent where 2 local ladies do kids face painting and activities (for a small fee) which is a nice touch. Our kids just loved playing in the tent. There was also someone selling local produce which was great.
You don't really get to see any animals (from the website you might imagine you can ) - they are all up by the owner's house. The other great thing is that they don't hike prices at peak season - I just think that's amazing, and such a refreshing change. This is a lovely site for families - book early!
I have had many a fine weekend at this wonderful campsite, always a big hit with our children and our friends and their children. The owners are delightful and always friendly, accommodating and flexible. The site has great facilities and offers some that other sites overlook such as communal fridge freezers to help with keeping your supplies fresh!
Perfect for families with young children due to the layout of the site allowing for them to run off and play without ever being out of sight.
Great location for stomping up Glastonbury Tor. Pretty site with resident animals (pigs, sheep, chickens etc) to amuse the kids. Owners very friendly and helpful.
The benefits of the central area for children to play in (tents are pitched round the perimeter of the field) is also its downside unfortunately -it was really noisy in the evenings as the whole outside space becomes a huge play area. Worth bearing in mind if you have smaller kids.
Washrooms/showers were adequate and kept very clean.
This is a great site, especially for kids, but they do have an ’annexe’ for those of you that prefer not to be woken too early! It feels really remote but is actually only about half an hour from all the obvious attractions in the area. The owners are really lovely and are obviously very committed to keeping things pretty simple with basic but very good facilities. The pitches are huge, especially for the UK and the centre of the field is dedicated to the ’kids’ play area. Perfect.
Just returned from another fantastic weekend at this lovely site...was our 4th weekend there, still enjoying it - this time managed to leave the site for an afternoon walk, but otherwise is plenty to keep young children occupied. Facilities get a bit stretched when campsite is full, but are clean and pleasant. In all, a lovely family site, with very friendly and helpful owners.
