Stock Gaylard Glamping

Parties and big group glamping on a North Dorset country estate

Oh to live on a country estate. To throw grand tea parties on the croquet lawn and enjoy late night balls with the landed gentry. The Stock Gaylard pile in north Dorset might itself be out of bounds for us common folk to hold big bashes, but, not wanting to rest on their laurels, the family owners have created not one but four ‘luxury’ encampments on the estate grounds instead, perfectly equipped for group gatherings in the great outdoors.

The estate grounds are home to two separate yurt camps (one for up to 14 people the other for 12), as well as a converted double-decker bus in a clearing (space for 11 in this camp) and a secluded woodman's wagon just for two set in its own very private area. Each encampment is set in private, secluded clearings of old oaks and elms with a covered living area in each in case the weather takes a turn for the worse.

Each site is exclusively yours with no shared facilities and a good five minute's walk from anything else on the estate. The yurts and conversions have all been made on the estate using as much of their own wood as possible. The home-made lattice-framed yurts are topped with green camouflaging roofs, to help them blend into the surroundings, perched on a run-around wooden platforms that links them all together.

The attention to detail both inside and out of the accommodation is exceptional with real mattresses and real wooden beds where possible, with exquisite décor. Outside, there are some of your standard expectations – fire pits and log benches – but look out for extra treats too: Quirky touches throughout each site include open air wood-fired baths, a bathroom in a horse box and barbecues on the top deck of the big blue bus.

Stock Gaylard have provided everything, from hot water bottles and nature books to every kitchen utensil under the sun, except perhaps an Aga, which really wouldn’t look out of place at all in this five-star country camp.

Nearby attractions

On the doorstep, there are walking options aplenty, following footpaths through the surrounding cow fields. A short drive into the Dorset Downs provides further routes. Walk in the footsteps of Thomas Hardy and his characters or swim at various points along the River Stour, renowned for its clear, appealing waters. The Iron Age fort Hambledon Hill (01297 489481), is a few miles away with a steep 20 minute climb to the top. The slopes are trodden in interesting history but today it's a peaceful place, home to a nature reserve preserving the Adonis blue butterfly that flourishes on the chalkland downs. There are plenty of good pubs nearby, some just on the doorstep (see Food & Drink) but travelling a little further to spots like Sherbourne and Shaftesbury is an excellent choice too. It's a 40–45-minute drive to the Dorset coast.

Food and drink

Try Plumber Manor (01258 472507) a 10-minute drive away and great for special occasions, The Gaggle of Geese (01300 345249; 15 minutes) for some good pub grub and The Trooper (01963 362405; 10 minutes) or The White Hart (01963 23231; 5 minutes) for a nice pint or two. If you want to try some of the local food for yourself, head to Dikes Independent Supermarket (01963 362204; 10 minutes) who stock over 200 local producers (and will serve a great breakfast in the cafe). There are also a number of food festivals throughout the year that are certainly worth a visit.
