South Lytchett Manor

Poole, Dorset, England
1 acre hosted by Jo B.
A family friendly campsite near Poole and Bournemouth in Dorset set within 20 acres of tranquil parkland
Hipcamp don’t usually go in for the caravan park types – and with 85 fully serviced hard standings, there’s certainly a leaning towards our four-wheeled friends here – but there’s something different about South Lytchett Manor. After all, you don’t become the AA’s 'Campsite of the Year' without offering something above the norm.

Set within the 20-acre grounds of a former country house, South Lytchett Manor is certainly not short of space. From the moment you arrive there is a sense of regal estate history. Grand iron gates are adorned with decorative twists and curls, opening the way to what you’d imagine is a great avenue of mature trees. Instead, inside, a small reception area and shop greet you and beyond spread the green meadows of the campsite, scattered with motorhomes.

While certain staples of estate life still remain – cattle graze the neighbouring fields and a herd of roe deer frequent the parkland – the campsite is very much an established place that's taken root. Home to a hundred pitches, there is something here for everyone. Fully serviced plots provide for the caravaners while a separate tenting area offers a wide, grassy space with a mix of hedgerows, young trees and broad, mighty oaks that have clearly been here for decades. For children there’s a playground and indoor games room, while facilities are excellent, including immaculate and powerful showers and WiFi across the site.

Those on the hunt for extra comforts, meanwhile, can try the new gypsy wagon. Painted outside in the traditional style, but with an added decking area for sitting in the sun, this cosy glamping cart is perfect for those travelling light. Inside there are two singles and a double bed, along with the modern day luxury of a television. It’s just one of a collection of glamping structures in the pipeline, owners Joanne and David tell us. They’re always forward looking, on a constant quest for ways to improve.

The location, however, will always be a steady constant and that’s clearly nothing to complain about. The site extends in a long arch and at one end the village of Lytchett Minster begins, fronted by its 14th century parish church. The local pub, St Peter’s Finger, is a ten-minute walk away, while, if you follow the same road in the car, you’re led on to the market town of Wareham and beyond Dorset’s fabulous Purbeck Heritage Coast. You'll never be short of things to do and yet you'll never be in a rush to leave. Precisely what makes it such an award winner.

From the host
South Lytchett Manor Caravan and Camping in Dorset is located just three miles from Poole and nine miles from Bournemouth but is set in very pretty countryside. The holiday park is an ideal base for exploring outstanding local beauty spots, places of historic interest and a wide variety of nearby family attractions.
Nearby attractions
Poole and Bournemouth are the nearest coastal hotspots, the former with its vibrant waterfront and harbour, the latter with a vast, blue flag beach. It's worth heading a little further west to the famous Dorset coast, however, where huge limestone cliffs create an incredibly dynamic seafront. Swanage Bay, Stutland and Old Harry Rocks are all just a 30 minute drive away while Kimmerage Bay, Lulworth Cove and the arch of Durdle Door are only a little further. For the best views of them walk sections of South West Coast Path. Iconic Corfe Castle (01929 481 294) is also a must. Mostly dating back to the 13th century when King John stayed here, the castle was partly blown up in the English Civil War, and today you can wander around the ruined walls and turrets.
Food and drink
It's a ten minute walk to St Peters Finger (01202 622275) in the village. It's definitely worth popping down for dinner at some point, since guests from the campsite receive a free bottle of wine when they order 2 main courses! The Courtyard Centre (01202 631030) is adjacent to the campsite, serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon teas and, of course, there's the fully stocked shop on the campsite itself, which sells local meats and fresh veg during high season.
