Stock Gaylard Glamping
Stock Gaylard Estate, Sturminster Newton, Dorset, DT10 2BG
Oh to live on a country estate. To throw open one’s windows and breathe in dawn’s mist before it fades away in time for morning birdsong. To see herds of deer frolicking among ancient woodland... The Stock Gaylard pile might itself be out of bounds to everyone bar the resident landed gentry, but, not ones to rest on their laurels, the family owners have created not one but two ‘luxury’ wonderments on the estate for the hoi polloi.
Two separate yurt camps (Withybed and Brickles) are set in private, secluded clearings of old oaks and elms, alongside nesting owls, nightingales, and butterflies. Withybed, next to the deer park, faces the setting sun, while Brickles has far-reaching views towards Bulbarrow Hill in the east. In both camps three home-made lattice-framed yurts, topped with green camouflaging roofs, perch on wooden platforms. Two yurts are for sleeping in, with a double bed and two single beds crafted to curve with the walls. The interior furnishings both look and feel extravagant.
Outside, the attention to detail continues with fire pits, picnic benches with log seats, a sink, and a tin bath. There’s even an empty bell tent for extra guests who bring their own bedding, so in total each camp can sleep 15. The third yurt in each camp serves as a living space and is roomy, with a long sofa, guidebooks, and wooden dressers containing every kitchen utensil imaginable, except perhaps an Aga, which really wouldn’t look out of place at all in this 5-star country camp.
The Owner Says
Back to beautiful basics
We stayed here last year on the Brickles site with our 3 young children. We all loved it. Really comfortable sleeping arrangements. Great outdoor bathing and washing. And lovely to have a camp fire. Hosts couldn't have been more helpful and pleasant. Yurts get hot in the sunshine.
