High Meadow Yurts

Time seems to stands wonderfully still at High Meadow Yurts. In days gone by the site was a 40 acre working farm, set outside the Brecon Beacons National Park, in a valley peppered with lush ferns and ancient trees. Today, the traditional farm remains, however two delightful, wonderfully furnished abodes have been added, allowing visitors to experience this idyllic farming scene for themselves. Perfect for campers seeking a touch of luxury, couples after a cosy break and small families in need of a hassle-free holiday. But whatever the reason you visit High Meadow Yurts – one thing's for sure – you’re in for a treat.

The site's innovative owners (Anna and Hugh) have really thought outside the tent to create quality accommodation. A combination of traditional Mongolian design and British craftsmanship, the two yurts are made from varnished, sustainable hard wood frames and canvas covers, designed to withstand anything the British climate can throw at them. Colourfully furnished on the inside with a kingsize bed, sofa and storage space, each yurt also comes with an equipped kitchen and private wooden deck with barbecue, so there’s really no excuse for not cooking up some delicious local produce!

There's also plenty to do. The charming market town of Hay-on-Wye (9 miles) sits just inside the Welsh border, and has become the undisputed second hand book capital of the world. In 1988, the town’s fabulous festival was established to celebrate all aspects of the creative arts, and was notably endorsed by former US president Bill Clinton as “The Woodstock of the mind”. Reputed to be the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Wales, the tiny town centre is dotted with fascinating shops (over 1 million books are crammed into its ageing stores) and narrow cobblestone lanes verdant with moss and mildew, which inspire the creation of copycat book towns across the globe.

Back at High Meadow Yurts, guests are welcome to get to know the site's many residents: woodpeckers, tawny & barn owls, ravens, buzzards, rabbits, foxes and badgers all regularly frequent here, and if you’re lucky you might even see a red kite soaring above or a brown hare skipping across the field. Or, if all that nature proves too much excitement, you can always relax on your deck with a decent glass of wine, dozing gently to the pleasant echo of the wind in the trees. In other words, High Meadow Yurts is where you can leave behind the stresses and strains of everyday life, giving you plenty of time to do all those nice things life has to offer.

The Owner Says

(info supplied by the campsite)

We really enjoy welcoming guests to share the unrivalled peace and tranquility of our 'High Meadow'.  These beautifully crafted structures are decorated in cosy cheerful colours, with comfort and attention to detail very much the order of the day.  A properly comfy kingsize bed, sofa, table and chairs and plenty of clothes hanging space are topped off with a small but brilliant wood burner to keep you warm and cosy. Relax and curl up with a book from the book shelf , take time to enjoy one of the board games or a game of cards or pore over one of the local maps to plan your next day exploring one of the beautiful, hidden local valleys.

Both our yurts offer idylic pastoral views across the Escley Valley to the East, from the comfort of your own private, elevated deck. The dramatic landscape of Hatterral Ridge, Hay Bluff and the Black Mountains to the West can be seen from the top of the farm and 'Field Maple's' Deck.

Also on your deck is an extremely well equipped camp kitchen with all the pots, pans and utensils you need, along with a few little extras such as tea, coffee, salt & pepper, olive oil and a pint of milk to get you started when you arrive.

A short walk across the Meadow (100 m) is the luxuriously appointed 'Washouse' with 2 splendid and spacious shower rooms, one of which also has a freestanding Slipper bath, perfect for a relaxing soak.  Despite being shared facilities, the shower rooms, flush loos and plentiful basins mean no waiting for your morning ablutions.  And the beautiful spring water is heated by the Sun - what more could you ask for!

Getting up into the Black Mountains couldn't be easier, a strenuous 45 minute walk from the Farm gate, but we can also direct you to the car park at the base of 'The Cat's Back' (10 min drive) for an appreciation of the stunning views across to The Malvern Hills, without using quite so much puff!

Being so close to the National Park means we have little or no light pollution and we enjoy some of the darkest skies in the UK. Star Gazing on a clear summer night is a stunning experience.

And if what you really enjoy at the end of the day is a good pint and someone else's cooking, our wonderful local Pub 'The Bridge Inn' is a short 15 min walk across the farm for great local Beer, Cider and creative, eclectic food.

So come and let the Meadow do it's work as the perfect place to relax and unwind, you won't be disappointed.

We look forward to sharing our little bit of Paradise with you!

Superb - can't be faulted

Excellent site.  Facilities are great.  The kitchen is well equipped.  Large decking area with firepit (wood and charcoal provided).  The owners really have thought of everything - snuggly blankets to sit outside with, extra duvet for those chilly nights, fire wood and charcoal for the wood burner and the fire pit, ice blocks for the cooler box, tea, coffee provided and even a welcoming lemon drizzle cake and a pint of milk.  The weather was great while we were there but we did use the wood burner which warmed the yurt up nicely and made it lovely and warm quite quickly.  It is pretty isolated (not just a walk to a shop) but there is an excellent pub just a short 15 minute walk away across the field and they do great food.   There are two bathrooms for just the two yurts so there was never any queuing up to use the shower and of course each yurt has their own compost toilet (which surprisingly wasn't yukky like I expected!).  Highly recommend these yurts and I thought they were well worth the money.

Perfect

Echoing all the previous comments, this place is absolutely stunning! Immaculately presented set within stunning views and even a freshly home baked lemon drizzle cake to greet you! We only stayed two nights, one was beautifully sunny and spent the day canoeing down the wye river seeing kingfishers and relaxing on the river, the second day was spent on a walk over the nearby mountains from the footpath at the end of the drive. The rain came in for the evening and it was just as nice playing board games in front of a roaring wood burner. Would of been 6 star if it was an option, definitely recommend this to anyone!!!

little slice of paradise

My partner and I have just returned from a long weekend at High Meadow Yurts and I can honestly say we didn't want to leave! It is a really magical, peaceful place. We were made to feel so welcome from the moment we arrived and felt like every last detail had been considered with care. Hugh and Anna were both really friendly and attentive hosts but without ever impinging on our privacy - there was a delicious cake waiting for us in the kitchen when we arrived and fresh logs for the wood burning stove seemed to magically appear outside the wash-house without us every having to ask for more! Our yurt was set in a lush meadow full of buttercups with views over the surrounding fields and off to the Black Mountains in the distance. It was a wet weekend so we enjoyed listening to the rain (as well as the sheep and the owls!) from the comfort of our beautiful, warm yurt - the wood-burning stove kept us very cosy. We used the guide books supplied to go for a walk in the hills and also took the recommendation of the local pub for Sunday lunch which was great. All in all, we could not have hoped for a better stay, cannot recommend highly enough!

Escapism!

Two of us stayed here for a long weekend over the bank holiday. I've never yurt'ed before or done glamping - but I would say it's worth the extra expense. The yurt itself is well equipped, ideal for BBQ'ing but, as we only used it once to cook, we ate out most of the time. There's some cracking pubs nearby (namely the Bridge Inn - 2 fields away from the yurt), the locals are all so friendly (which is great when you're escaping London) and it's the most peaceful, tranquil and pleasant place to stay. Plenty of walking to do nearby, and day trips to Hay on Wye and surrounding areas - you could spend a week just walking and being out and about in the valleys. It's a great escape and a reminder of the Great British Countryside. Crack a fire on after a long day's walk and feel the yurt heat up whilst you drink bottle after bottle of wine and get all warm-jumpers-and-dogs feeling.  There's a seperate bath house with big bath and showers (v. nice), well equipped kitchen, super comfortable bed and duck down pillows...need I say anymore. You'll probably see the words 'Lemon drizzle cake' very often too. If you're considering this place, stay there, it's a cracking place to escape to.

Peaceful Luxury

Myself and three friends stopped here on route to Cardiff as a extra special treat for my best friend and bride to be. We were blown away by the beautiful surroundings and unique accommodation. The Yurts are finished to an incredibly high standard with every conceivable added extra you might need for camping supplied.

Our host was so friendly and incredibly helpful with pre-planning and on arrival. From arriving to four colourful wheelbarrows for carry our bags across the field, to the roll top bath and full stocked kitchen with freshly baked lemon drizzel cake...this short stay gets five stars from us and another visit put in the diary. So glad I found this little hidden gem.

Wonderful!

We booked two nights at High Meadow Yurts (Shade Oak Yurt) on a whim as we were touring in the area, and liked it so much we immediately booked another two nights! The setting is glorious, a peaceful meadow set amongst rolling countryside yet with the grandeur of the Black Mountains only a few miles away. The yurt itself was cosy, romantic and extremely comfortable, with a well equipped adjacent kitchen hut, a private composting loo and a luxurious toilet/shower block only a minute's walk away. Anna was a very friendly and welcoming host and really made the place feel special with little touches like fresh flowers on the table and a home baked cake waiting for us on arrival. All in all, highly recommended!

Birthday surprise!

My boyfriend booked a High Meadow Yurt as a surprise for my birthday and it was absolutely amazing. Anna and Hugh had thought of everything from fairy lights to cosy blankets to a fully equipped kitchen and there was even a gorgeous home made cake on arrival. The yurt was very private amongst the 40 acres of farm land and the wash house was a great luxury to have. There were loads of activities nearby (we went kayaking and horse riding) but would have quite happily stayed in the yurt and on our deck all day with a casual walk to the nearby Bridge Inn which served amazing food. This was truly an amazing short break and would recommend it to anyone!

Absolutely Fantastic

From the minute we arrived you could feel the stress of normal everyday life drain away. The site is quiet, immaculate, in stunning location, thoughtfully furnished, the complete get away from it all vacation. Everything you could need was supplied, and some things you probably hadn't even thought of!!! Fresh flowers, milk and a beautiful homemade lemon drizzle cake add a lovely touch after a long drive. The local pub, The Bridge Inn, is a short stroll away and a highlight if you have been relaxing and want to stretch your legs and retire for a drink, great food and with a warm welcome and a beautiful stream or hot fire to sit beside what more could you ask  The toilet block is immaculate, both bath and shower and superb, the facilities are second to none. Overall this was a fantastic experience and one which we will cherish for years to come. Many thanks.

Amazing. :)

26th-28th august 2014.

I booked this for a little getaway for our anniversary, we had such a lovely time, very peaceful location, it did not dissapoint at all, every small detail was thought about, there was nothing that we needed at all, and we will be returning next year with our children in tow to experience this amazing get away.

We did the cider museum, and went in to hereford town center for a walk around plenty of shops to look in, and we had the most delicious meal in the local pub called "the bridge inn" which is only a short walk away from the yurt, there's also lots of other walks and things to do in the area as well, we only had a day there and could have done lots more.

Well done to Anna and Hugh for creating a lovely yurting experience, I will be recommending to everyone. X :)

Slice of Heaven

Just come back from a long weekend staying in Field Maple Yurt and what can we say..... this place is amazing! Anna and Hugh have literally though of every detail to make your stay perfect. The yurts are private, immaculately clean and well maintained and the bathroom facilities are 5 star! The setting is lovely and with only 2 yurts in the field, you feel like you have complete privacy. the area is great, with lots to do, Hay on Wye is a nice place for a potter and a decent pub is within walking distance.........what more could you want? In the very wise words of Arnold Schwarzenegger.......... I'll be Back!!

Thank you Anna and Hugh for allowing us to come with our friends to your beautiful yurts. We hired both yurts for myself, partner and 3 month old baby and the other yurt for friends with another baby. Then 7 of our very good friends camped around the yurts. It was just perfect. The facilities are amazing and definitely enough hot water for all! The plan was to go exploring on Saturday but in fact we just spent the day chilling out, eating Anna's lemon drizzle cake and enjoying the views and fresh air. We couldn't have had a better time, especially so soon after having a new baby. Highly recommend to all and will most definitely be back.

This place is a beautiful little hideaway if you just want to get away from it all.

Set in some of the most beautiful countryside in th UK they are the perect base for hikes around the area, without giving up on any luxury.

Anna & Hugh have put a lot of thought and effort  planning, decorating and finishing the yurts and facilities to a very  high standard. Annas lemon drizzle cake was a nice welcome after the long journey.

Thanks Anna & Hugh we hope to see you again soon, Mark & Sharon.
