Boutique glamping and camping in the North Wessex Downs, with immediate access to the White Horse Trail

Some places leave a lasting impression as soon as you arrive. The North Wessex Downs is one example, the undulating downland and ancient forests rightfully inspiring literary greats. Highway Hill is another, a rural idyll with a clutch of shepherd’s huts and bell tents in a quiet paddock beyond a farm. And, since 2021, there’s even a tiny pop-up campsite, too, so those with their own tents can also come and share in a slice of the quiet country pie.

Down a single lane road, guests arrive to a yard of farm buildings before spilling out to a parking area with the glamping paddock beyond. Shepherd’s huts are tucked beneath birch trees, featuring fitted beds, wood-burners and fully equipped kitchens, making them the natural choice for a romantic break. The bell tents, meanwhile, are slightly more spacious (sleeping up to six people) and cater nicely to families. Inside, bunting abounds, fairy lights festoon the central pole and thoughtful little touches like vintage trunks, vibrant throws and a wood burner mean the bells are equally inviting on cooler evenings.

In the height of summer, meanwhile, the pop-up campsite (the ‘Windmill Hill’) also appears, set in a separate meadow and with its own portable-style toilets, gas-powered showers and a communal kitchen tent. There are bell tents in this camping area, too, those these don’t have wood-burners since they’re geared up for the warmth of summer. All guests also have access to additional toilets and a disabled-access shower near the reception and car park area.

What’s notable at Highway Hill is the clear thought that’s gone in to every detail. There are conscientious extra touches like hammocks and high-chairs and, for glampers, basic provisions, from tea and porridge to lanterns and linen, are all supplied. They recently added wood-fired hot tubs you can book, too, after feedback from their glampers.

Both on site and off there’s ample to entertain. There are pygmy goats and alpacas to meet and there are plenty of footpaths leading straight from the farm. The long-distance White Horse Trail runs up the slope opposite the entrance, leading to the Cherhill White Horse, one of 13 iconic equine chalk figures that dot the Wiltshire hillsides. The mysterious stone circles at Avebury and the neolithic burial tomb at West Kennet Barrow are also nearby, while the Georgian-Roman splendour of Bath is 45 minutes away. So you can do a whistle-stop tour of England through the ages before returning to your timeless retreat in the hills.

There's no electricity in the bell tents but there are ample battery-powered fairy lights and a wood-burning stove, along with bunting and bohemian decor. The Highway Hill area also has two wood-fired hot tubs, which you can hire privately for you stay.

In the Windmill Hill area: The Windmill Hill campsite has two gas-heated showers, two brand new portable-style toilets and guests can also use the three toilets and the shower next to the reception building as well. There is a communal outdoor kitchen (where there are also electric sockets for charging devices) and there is a campfire bowl at each pitch. There are pre-pitched and furnished bell tents in the Windmill Hill area, too, the only real difference with the bell tents in the Highway Hill area being that the Windmill ones do not have wood-burning stoves inside. For campers and glampers alike, there are board games, cards and jigsaws to borrow, plus maps and books detailing local walks and flora and fauna.

Escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life in order to get back to nature is incredibly important for our wellbeing. Set deep in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside, Highway Hill provides luxury outdoor accommodation for families and couples who love the outdoor life but don’t want to compromise on comfort. We’re located at the end of a leafy country lane in 100-acres of private land within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; a stunning landscape of ancient woods, gently meandering chalk streams and rolling downland.

Even though we do say so ourselves, staying at Highway Hill is a very special experience; one that’s perfect for seasoned campers and newbies alike. You can choose a romantic, hand-crafted shepherd’s hut for two or spend a night under canvas in one of our comfy and spacious family-sized bell tents; our Hayloft venue is perfect for special occasions, meetings, classes and group events. In exciting news, we now also have a second campsite, operating for only 8 weeks over the summer. The site is on our Windmill Hill field and will house two fully furnished bell tents and four pitch-your-own camping plots.

Our accommodation is finished to an extremely high standard and we also have two wood fired hot tubs new for 2021. Wood burning stoves offer warm, cosy nights in whilst our futons and soft, snuggly bedding make for a dreamy night’s sleep. Glamping glory.

From my initial phone call to the last goodbye, we had a wonderful experience at Highway Hill. Our shepherds hut was so beautiful, cosy and comfy. The hot tub was a real bonus and the field and surroundings just lovely. A great touch was the option to order delicious home cooked prepared meals to deliver to you at the campsite. And a real highlight was Dave, the farmer who gave us a wonderful session where we met his beloved animals. We'll be back!

Perfect weekend away with friends

This year was our third consecutive stay at Highway Hill; it’s such a special place that each time we go with more people and take over more of the site - this year we booked it out exclusively which was amazing. If you have a big enough group (or nearly big enough group) then I can thoroughly recommend doing that as it’s just so relaxing to have the run of the whole place and such a great way to go away as a group. The site is small and contained, the tents / shepherds huts immaculate, the central safari tent excellent as a group base (esp during any rain) and the toilets/showers perfectly clean. The addition of the log burning hot tubs is also great, unexpectedly the perfect thing to do when the rain comes in on a Sunday afternoon ;-). Chris and the team could not have been more welcoming and we’re already planning next year’s visit (it’s that good!)

Amazing, a dream holiday.

Highway Hill was an amazing glamping experience for our family of 6. It was a hidden gem in the beautiful countryside and you couldn't ask for anymore. I feel like I Iived a dream for few days, watching the sunset while dipping in the hot tub, the moon rising through trees from the far, listening to the bleating goats in the farm and looking at the far-away forest. The site has facilities, well equipped kitchens, clean toilets and showers and very good customer service from the lovely staff. We wish to visit again in future. My special thanks to Esther, Chris and Dave.

Great set up, beautiful setting

Communication and emails with the team at Highway Hill were very clear which made arrival, getting the key and settling in an absolute breeze. We stayed in Perdita and the hut was neat, clean, bed was made, and found everything we needed for a comfortable stay! So many nice little touches and decorations as well. The area outside the hut was great also with table and chairs and the kadai fire bowl, perfect for eating dinner and watching the sunset (the site faces West and the horizon is far so chances of a great sunset are high!) The toilet & shower facilities were also kept clean and no issues with other guests on site. We did make use of the hot tub which was another nice way to watch the sunset. Location is excellent too in close proximity to an infinite number of nice walks and great views. I would 100% recommend staying here!! Thanks to the whole team at Highway Hill :D

Response from Highway Hill

Thank you so so much for such an amazing review Samuel, we're so glad you enjoyed your stay and made the most of the sunsets and walks! We really hope to have you back to stay again! Esther, Chris, Ruth and all at Highway Hill :D

A very special stay

Perdita served me well. Beautifully equipped, very cosy. Whole site so well maintained in a great location, especially for walkers. Using the eco hot tub in the evenings was the cherry on the cake. A wonderful experience watching the beautiful sunsets with a glass of bubbly in hand. My stay was made very special by the caring, helpful staff. A site that I would totally recommend. All facilities were well maintained and very clean. Well worth a return visit at some point.

Response from Highway Hill

Thank you so much Jennifer for this wonderful review. We're so happy you enjoyed your stay and found the peace and quiet you wanted. Also so glad you enjoyed the hot tub! We look forward to welcoming you again, Esther, Chris, Ruth and the Highway Hill team x

Magical and luxurious glamping!!

We really could not have asked for a more magical time. The intimate size of the site and how few others are around really makes you feel part of nature, and the views are gorgeous. My partner has never been camping before and I thought glamping would be a good introduction... there were so many special touches which brought added comfort in the excellent set up at Highway Hill and my partner is now totally sold on glamping! The only problem is anywhere else might be a bit of a let down now... (genuine worry!). The wetroom and loo facilities are really clean and comfortable which made such a difference. The set up was fantastic for kids too - made it very easy to have a 2.5 year old in tow (who got to enjoy more independence and nature than ever before and was BEAMING - and fast asleep- at the end of each day). The experience of a session with Dave and Ewe was also a really special part of the weekend and I would recommend it! All in all - we will definitely be back - with the rest of the family!

Stunningly Beautiful Site

Highway Hill is a beautiful, peaceful site with high quality accommodation. The 3 shepherds' huts and 2 bell tents are all super clean and well equipped. Our barbecue was excellent. The views and sunsets were amazing. The team were very helpful and the new hot tubs are now ready for use. We are really looking forward to visiting again.

Simply the best glamping experience I have ever had!

We had booked the whole site and we had a wonderful truly memorable stay. It didn’t matter that it rained and was quite chilly, we were perfectly snug by the fire inside the safari tent or toasting marshmallows by the outside fire pit. There was so much attention to detail we were all so impressed. Small touches like an eye mask on each bed and a little medical kit in each place. It was spotlessly clean as well. The children and the adults loved the animals and we wholeheartedly recommend booking in a tour of the animals with Dave. We also had a yoga class while we were there which was glorious. Can not recommend this place enough!

Amazing place, Spotlessly clean, Attention to detail, Friendly awesome and unique experince with the farm animals

From the minute we all arrived we could not believe how beautiful Highway Hill Farm was. We hired the 3 Shepherds Huts each one was different and kitted out with everything we needed. The equipment looked new, sparkly and spotlessly clean. The extra facilities a kitchen - shower block was just for our exclusive use because of Covid. The owners had thought of everything. Antiseptic gel at lots of points. We enjoyed campfires barbqs stay gazing at night. Our whole family did not want to leave this lovely place - full of Zen and happiness. A local artist had created a meadow experience for the children to run around and a throne bench in the middle which meant hours of imaginary games. All fenced and gated ...so safe! We all joined in the walking Alpacas experience with Farmer Dave and Farmyard visit...this was an experince we will never forget as we learnt all about the rescue animals. Our whole family would highly recommend this holdiay.!

Staying in the bell tents felt like a proper glamping experience! Warm, welcoming and cosy with lovely attention to detail. Beautiful setting with plenty to do in the surrounding area. The children loved the farm animals on site. Staff could not have been more accommodating. Highly recommend.
Aug 15, 2020 by Clare

Just perfect. Exceeded our expectations.

Wonderfully warm welcoming without being the slightest bit intrusive. Stayed in bell Tents and they were really comfortable with lots of lovely finishing touches - bunting, fairy lights, blankets and even eye masks!. Spotlessly clean. The highway hill Team have thought of every home comfort without detracting from the outdoor experience. Setting utterly beautiful. Children just adored their time with the farm animals courtesy of “Dave and ewe”. Plenty to do in the surrounding area for adults and children alike. Loved our time there and will definitely go back.

My nine-year-old daughter and I had a blissful three nights at Highway Hill, staying in Daphnis and Chloe shepherd's hut. The hut is so thoughtfully equipped, and gorgeously cosy when it rains. The bed was really comfortable, the cooking facilities more than adequate for simple meals and the whole thing the perfect combination of indoor luxury and outdoor living. Really fun to have goats and sheep on site, and we took the alpacas walking with Dave who was so generous with his time and knowledge, a definite highlight. Staff were super nice and welcoming. We'd love to come back and have no hesitation in recommending this site to anyone wanting a tranquil and special getaway.

Me and my husband stayed at Highway Hill for his birthday, we had a fantastic time. The sheperds hut (Preditha) was so comfy and cosy, we also had some friends come around to join us for food and they loved the place, definitely recommend any one who would like to experience camping with comfort :-D

We’ve just returned from a truly wonderful five days at Highway Hill. We went as a family of five (in the Isabel tent) with my 72 year old Mum staying in the Gabriel Oak Shepherd Hut (with her own loo! A definite bonus). We arrived in glorious sunshine and gasped with delight when we saw the interior of our tent. Everything was scrupulously clean and so carefully thought through. It was brilliant having a dedicated loo and shower as it meant we could leave our bits and bobs in there for the duration of the week. The location was perfect as a base to explore the area, although our kids would have been perfectly happy doing nothing more than romping around the field, feeding the goats and leaping from log to log round the communal fire pit! We went to Avebury, Bowood House and had a fabulous morning with Dave and his animals. Highly recommend. The Safari tent was brilliantly equipped. Our big mistake was bringing lots of camping and cooking equipment we didn’t need! Camping chairs, tinfoil, salt and pepper, cooking utensils, torches etc etc. Even eye masks were provided. It really was an all round fabulous experience and very good value for money. We’ll be back for sure.

Lovely Peaceful Stay with Caring Staff

We were a group of 3 close friends and stayed in one of the huge bell tents - we had never been 'glamping' before, and it was such a treat to have so much space and to enjoy the little touches which allowed us to feel very comfortable. We found the safari tent very helpful as it has everything you may need for cooking, or dining/relaxing inside if it is raining. We found the cleanliness standards to be very high and well thought out. We also enjoyed a BBQ out in the sunshine... and our neighbours enjoyed a beautiful campfire one evening. All the staff were very responsive to our questions and queries, and were very caring and friendly (Thank you Ruth and Claire!). A wonderful stay and we would love to return one day!

Fantastic space for a large group celebration

We celebrated my dad's 60th birthday at Highway Hill and the space was absolutely perfect for us 7 adults and 4 children. Haig's Hut made it so that we had a brilliant communal area to cook and hang out together, while the individual accommodations were really comfortable and quaint. Highly recommend the animal experience with Farmer Dave - our whole group loved hanging out with the miniature goats, rabbits, donkeys, alpacas... (especially the adults!) Overall a fantastic space for a relaxing weekend away, especially for a group celebration. Beautiful views, peaceful setting, and comfy accommodation. Highly recommended.

awesome place

best place to stay , you want for nothing

Fantastic Glamping Site

A fantastic glamping site set deep into the countryside just outside Calne. Calm, peaceful and kitted our perfectly for a family of 4 to spend 5nights in a bell tent in luxury comfort. Great separate cooking area and hot powerful showers always a winner in my book. On a lovely farm and the children (3&7) loved helping the farmer take his goats for a walk around the area, checking on the other animals he has rescued. Will definitely be returning. Loads to do in the area and even the bad weather was not a damper, as no bogs or muddy areas, despite nearly 24hrs constant heavy rain on the first day!

The perfect way to spend a weekend without a care in the world!

Highway was a special place to visit in so many ways! We stayed in Gabriel Oak which was the perfect balance between outdoor living with indoor luxuries! Every little detail was so thought out from the eggs and local apple juice on arrival to the fairy lights and cosy wood burner! We feel really blessed to have experienced a piece of the Wiltshire countryside, so peaceful and lush! But to top it all off what made our trip was the well cared for, curious and kind animals that graze on your doorstep! We were lucky enough to get close up and personal with the animals with a wonderful experience with Dave! We made friends with the alpacas (Clive and Prince to be precise) and we’re always greeted beautifully by the cheeky goats! Dave was so warm and told us wonderful stories of the farm and the local area, couldn’t have asked for more!

Magical, easily the most wonderful glamping site I have been to

We had an unforgettable weekend with friends at Highway Hill. I grew up a few miles away so know the area well but the site exceeded my expectations in so many ways. We were in a party with two other families and we used the communal cooking facilities to produce a Lebanese style BBQ feast in the evening and had the firebowls burning until late. Our children ranged from 1 to 10 and they adored the freedom of the site. My 4 year old got to walk a group of baby goats and cuddle a duckling. Adults loved the views and sunset and peace (swallows, goats, sheep) are all you can hear. The large communal tent provides plenty of space and warmth if weather deteriorates. We actually ended up just hanging out at the campsite for the weekend with books, a slackline, badminton, animal visits and bacon sandwiches we really didn't need to go far. If I went back I would have done more exploring to Avebury stone circle and the Longbarrow, White Horse pub, and all the lovely walks across the downlands. This is a special place!

Perfect setting for real quality time with the family

We booked all three shepherd's huts and the bell tents to cater for a family get together to celebrate a 21st birthday. We were a party of 12 and there was more than enough space for everyone to spread out and equally to sit around the dinner table together and later the sofas for family games. The site facilities are finished to a very high standard and it is exceptionally well equipped. You can tell the team really care about your experience as there are thoughtful touches throughout, like milk, eggs, juice, tea etc. and some other foods available in each hut. There were even little torches provided, as well as plenty of wood for the fire. The site has its own woodland and you can access footpaths without having to go on any roads. The surrounding area is just stunningly beautiful. The animals are gorgeous and Dave, who looks after them, is so welcoming and inclusive. You feel involved from the minute you arrive and if you're looking for a farm experience, this would be the place to go. We finished off the evening sat around the campfire toasting marshmallows. It was such a wonderful experience and we've made memories that we'll cherish. I had visited the site before staying, so I knew we were in for a treat but it exceeded my expectations and was just perfect. Thanks to the whole team for all the work that goes into making this such a special place. Whole heartedly recommend Highway Hill.

The most wonderful country retreat

We loved our time at Highway Hill. It was a very tranquil and calm place to get away from it all. Having the animals around was such a joy, as it turns out they are therapy animals, and it was certainly very therapeutic to wake up in the mornings and check out the Shetland ponies, donkeys and baby goats. I highly recommend booking the sessions with them. The shepherds hut was perfect! So stylish! And the wood burning stove is very powerful, it'd make a wonderful winter getaway. Thank you for a very need break!

Clean, comfortable and great location

We have just been to this place and stayed 2 nights in a tent. Kids loved it, we did too - excellent location and watching sunset on a field was great. Tent, beds were super clean. If you are going with kids, strongly recommend to take animal sessions with Dave, who is an amazing animal loving person that will ensure your kids will learn a great deal about his animals.

We just loved our stay even the ugly British weather of wind and rain could not dampen our spirits. The facilities are fantastic, well equipped and very clean. More time than planned was spent in the tent but with the wood burner , some wine and board games we really relaxed! Your neighbours, the animals are just adorable, the baby goats were a fav! Communication from the team cannot be faulted, very comprehensive! The touches of milk, eggs and apple juice are a lovely touch. We hope to see you again!

Great stay

Nice quiet location, great set up with the bell tent Annabelle, good amount of firewood etc provided for the stove along with breakfast supplies. Would happily stay again.

Tip Top Tents

We loved every minute of our stay at Highway Hill. Everything has been thought through to ensure you have everything you could possibly need. It is comfortable, clean and cosy. We spent an hour with Dave and the animals which was a real highlight and something my two small boys have not stopped talking about- even though it was a couple of weeks ago now. They were very taken by LJ and Percy the goats who they took for a walk- a very special experience. The communal tent was a really fantastic resource. We don’t have much camping kit, but this space provided everything you could possibly need- especially if it rains. I’d highly recommend staying here.

They have thought about almost everything and it's beautifully quiet and peaceful.

The bell tent we stayed in was beautifully and comfortably kitted out. The gypsy caravan which two of our kids slept in was beautiful and they loved the experience. Anna, who manages the place, was extremely helpful and friendly. The site is beautiful and a lot of thought has gone into it. The animals are lovely too. We will definitely be back.

Great value, excellent facilities and a beautiful place

We came with our toddlers as a group of couples together, and had the most perfect break - there was nothing else we could have wished for; the facilities were all brand new, the staff all super helpful and welcoming and the place itself, just lovely. The bell tents and wagons were gorgeous and very well equipped. We had a great night away and thoroughly enjoyed a petting session with the animals on the next day. I have been raving about this great little site to my colleagues and we'll certainly be back. Thanks!

Alpaca Walk

weekend stay in an extremely pleasant part of Wiltshire, from the word go nothing was too much trouble, ace bell tent with all you need for a quiet escape and a peaceful night two little girls happy warm and very impressed with toasting marshmallows round the fire, I would have to highly recommend this site. Ask for farmer Dave what a star that man is.

My favourite Countryside Getaway

I've been to Highway Hill a few times now, and it never disappoints. The shepherds huts are extremely well-stocked and clean and so are the bell tents. They have a cozy, comfy feel and are a lovely place to relax and enjoy the quiet. I also thoroughly enjoyed using the Wood-burner on chilly evenings - love the smell and toastiness! The location is perfect for quiet walks in green pastures and through the woods and there are plenty of animals to say hello to along the way (big fan of the miniature goats and horses!) I'm from London, where it is loud and busy all the time, and Highway Hill offers a lovely, beautiful escape from all the madness. There is a shop about a 10 minute drive away, which is super handy if you forget some things! Also, the sunsets are INCREDIBLE! 10 out of 10, will continue going back as often as I can!

Response from Highway Hill

It's always great to have you here Whit, thank you so much for your support and for this wonderful review!

Lovely site, well equipped, very relaxing

We had a lovely time at Highway Hill. The shepherd's hut was comfy, clean and well equipped. We really liked the homely feel, with fairy lights, candles and pretty decor. The bed was very comfy. The washing up facilities and toilets/showers were close so it wasn't a trek to the loo but discretely out of eye line. Nice to have a BBQ and campfire available. The staff were very friendly and helpful. With such good infrastructure it was easy to have a restful and relaxing time. And we loved the goats!
