Camping and glamping in a wild setting of meadows, woods and streams, with activity options and an on-site coffee van

"We offer more than the average farmer's field but we’re closer to nature than formal camping grounds." That's how we were first introduced to Be Wilder Camps, a glamping and camping site just south of the Somerset village of Wanstrow, which uses immersive experiences, a wild landscape and rustic accommodation to provide an experience that puts you back in touch with nature.

The range of accommodation options, from camping pitches to safari bell tents and tipis, means the facilities vary depending on the level of luxury you’re opting for. In the safari bells you'll find orthopaedic mattresses that give the beds you have at home a run for their money, alongside all the home comforts you could ask for, welcome mat and all, with interiors decorated with tables, lamps, rugs and plants. All guests, meanwhile have use of the hot showers and proper flushing toilets, while considered extras include and on-site coffee van that serves dangerously moreish pastries. As long as you’re eating it outside, you’re allowed to count it as a wild breakfast.

There's a fun, bohemian feel to life here, which activities like yoga and archery only lend themselves too. Most of the experiences and activities take place in the 10 acres of woodland owned by the farm but, for those who want to explore on their own, there's a network of paths connected to the site that lead into the expansive 100 acres of Breach Wood. The activities give you the chance to connect with your fellow campers and glampers but there are other wild guests that frequent Be Wilder Camps too – rare insects, birds and deer – while, along the hilltop where the accommodation is set, there are a total of 15 springs passing through the site before they reach the local River Frome.

Understanding the campsite's location depends on what you're here for. It's between Cranbourne Chase and the Mendip Hills (if you're a hiker, biker or just fancy exploring the countryside) or it's between the popular haunts of Frome and Bruton (if you're here for markets, galleries and fine food). The hilltop campsite field, known as Field 725, is a good vantage point for taking it all in and a footpath leads across the fields to the good honey-stone pub in the village of Batcombe. By car, meanwhile, Nunney Castle, Longleat and the National Trust's Stour Head Estate are all within easy reach.

Food & Drink

Osip (01749 813322) is 10 minutes’ away from Be Wilder in Bruton and describes itself as a ‘farm-to-table’ restaurant – there's no menu for their dinner servings, instead you're trusting the Michelin-star chef’s expertise to provide you with an unforgettable meal. At The Chapel (01749 814070), also in Bruton and set inside an old 17th-century chapel, is as adept at serving coffee as cocktails and has its own artisan bakery catering for every craving, from scones at afternoon tea to takeaway pizzas. If you choose to dine in, the south-facing outdoor terrace is a stunning spot to dine. The Three Horseshoes Inn (01749 850359) in Batcombe is five minutes’ drive away from the site. A very popular spot among locals and visitors alike, they serve hearty pub classics alongside their great range of beer, topping off their classic country pub atmosphere with a lovely outdoor beer garden and roaring fires inside in winter.

Getting There

If you’re travelling Eastbound along the A303, come off the A303 just after the Sparkford Roundabout, taking the junction towards the A359 and Bruton. Follow the A359 North for four miles and then continue North towards Bruton at the crossroads. Continue along the A359 through Bruton, passing up the High Street and on to Quaperlake Street. Follow the A359 for just under five miles until you pass the village of Upton Noble on your right. After a few hundred yards you will come to Burts Hill, continue down this and at the bottom of the hill on your left is the entrance to Redwood Rare Breeds.

If you're coming from the M4. Take Junction 18 and then the A46 south towards Bath. Through Bath take the A36 south towards Frome (other routes exist including the toll bridge at Bathampton) for approximately 10 miles. At the roundabout take the second exit on to the A361 towards Frome. Follow the A361 around the edge of Frome for eight miles over five further roundabouts until you reach Nunney Catch where there is a petrol station, diner and truckstop. Take the first exit on to the A359 towards Bruton and follow the road for two and a half miles through the village of Wanstrow. The entrance to the campsite is on your right.

The nearest railway stations are in Bruton and Frome, the former is the closest at five miles. To Bruton, trains run from London Paddington, Bristol and Weymouth amongst others. From both stations, however, you'll need to get a taxi as there are no good bus services running past the campsite.
