All round a great experience
The campsite itself is in a beautiful location surrounded by farmland and plenty of walks right from the gate. The site was well kept and full of friendly families who were very respectful about noise and rubbish. The perfect place for a quiet getaway and would highly recommend the walk along the river to Mells past the old iron works and Mells waterfall
Absolutely beautiful site with great views and lovely walks. Walkable from the railway station even with a load of gear but equally easy to get a cab like we did on the way back if you’ve overdone the walking. It would be a bit hard going to do more than a couple of nights without a shower or hot water, but worth considering a trip to the leisure centre or even a night in one of the local inns to freshen up to enable a cleaner longer stay. We will definitely camp here again.
Brilliant couple of days getting away from it all @ Vallis Veg. Well spaced, level and private, Pitch no 9 was perfect. Firewood readily available and facilities basic but more than adequate. We’ll be back for sure.
Relaxing, Peaceful and Beautiful Surroundings!
Pitch 9 felt private, good amount of space between pitches. Facilities and car parking close by. All facilities were very clean and plenty of hand sanitizer! Always plenty of firewood, would happily come back again! Amazing place, would highly recommend!! 😁👍
Hassle-free, environmentally conscientious camping with sheltered, private pitches
Well organised online booking and payment system with no face to face check-in required. Quiet campsite with plenty of vegetation between pitches to provide privacy and shelter. Composting toilets. Plenty of local walks and attractions within easy reach.
Lovely Return to Nature
My sister and I stayed at Vallis Veg for 3 nights and it was a lovely experience! We had pitch no.5 nestled in the trees away from other campers we had a sense of privacy and being surrounded by nature. It was lovely to be able to have a campfire every night too! The facilities are basic but perfectly adequate for a few nights away - does what it says on the tin. I'd throughly recommend!
Quiet spot outside of Bath
A lovely private camp site outside of Bath made a lovely spot to stay for the night. Our campsite was described as lightly wooded area which provided allocated areas for tent, fires etc. The facilities were cleaned frequently and featured a nice one way system. Would stay there again if in the neighbourhood. Thanks.
A real adventure!
Our family of four really enjoyed our camping adventure in the woods. Perfect site (6), private and secluded, with lots of trees to play endlessly amongst and superb views of the sunset each evening. The basic amenities didn’t cause too much of a problem but may have done if we were staying longer than a few nights. Thank you also for taking care of us in these Covid-19 days - lots of new measures in place to ensure our safety. We will definitely return as there’s much more of the local area we’d like to explore.
Cosy, private camping in nature
We spent 2 nights at Vallis veg (pitches 1+2) and had a great time. There are many woodland footpaths to join right outside the campsite. We walked along to Mells (almost without having to touch a road) for a pub lunch and then swum at multiple spots along the river on our way back. It was really beautiful to have a private campfire spot (pitch 1) although sound does carry across the site and the other couple in our party struggled to sleep from others talking across the valley (I didn’t have any trouble sleeping but perhaps bring some earplugs just to be sure). We hope to come back again soon!

Thanks for leaving a review. I'm glad you had a good time but I do feel bad that anyone was kept awake by other campers. We try to be clear that it's a quiet site and I think normally everyone respects that. Although I know some people were kept awake by owls the week before you came!
Spoilt by noise
This campsite looked ideal for my first bike packing experience, initially it looked perfect as the secluded pitches were lovely and just want I wanted. Sadly I was kept awake by people singing and shouting until 3 in the morning
Response from Camping in Nature at Vallis Veg
Hi Michael, I'm so sorry that your stay was spoilt by noise. I try to make it clear through the essential information and signs in the toilets and on the notice board that this is a quiet site, more about nature than partying, however, occasionally campers don't respect this and are noisy. My phone number is on the noticeboard and the website and I am happy to be contacted at any time if there is a problem in the campsite - including noise. It's really helpful to me to know when there is a problem as it is likely to be affecting other campers too and I'm keen for everyone to enjoy their stay here. I hope you'll come again - usually the campsite is quiet and peaceful
The closest you can get to wild camping but in the safety of a campsite! This was my first time camping alone and I felt very safe. The simple facilities are all that you need for a short trip and I felt a million miles from normal life. My pitch (3) was absolutely perfect and came with its own robin. Lovely little walk along the river. I can't wait to bring my family back here as soon as possible. Thank you all.
Perfect private woodland location
We only stayed for one night and everything was perfect. The booking was very straightforward, the parking is very close to the pitch and directions around the site were well signposted. There were a lot of campers from looking at the parked cars but due to the size and privacy of the pitches, we rarely bumped into other campers. We'll definitely be back! The only negative I can think of is the lack of showers, it would be difficult to stay more than a few nights.

Hi Lucia, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review and I'm very glad you enjoyed your stay.
Lovely site - expensive vehicle charge
Had a very nice stay at Vallis Veg. Facilities were good, the pitches were relatively private and shops were a 25 minute walk. By far the biggest criticism is the “climate charge fee” which is not advertised when booking. If you have a car you are expected to pay £9 per day, just to have it on site or even if you arrive by vehicle. This an extra 50% on top of the booking (£18/night) and should therefore be included in the base price or excluded completely.
Response from Camping in Nature at Vallis Veg
Hi Bertie, thank you for leaving a review. I'm glad you liked the site - apart from the climate charge for vehicle use. It is useful to have your views on that too so I appreciate your clarity about it.
I've thought hard about how to encourage people to use sustainable methods of travel to get here and also about how to communicate about that. I definitely do want to have a separate charge for using a vehicle to get here rather than include it in the price as it keeps it cheap for walkers and cyclists and it reminds people about the impact of car use. The overall cost would be pretty similar either way as almost everyone does come by car. I'm aware that if everyone leaves their car at home I will need to raise my prices!
A difficulty is how to make the pricing clear at the outset. The booking system doesn't have a way to put it on the main page so I've tried to make it clear by putting it in the pitch description and by including it twice in the Essential Information, also by labelling it clearly when it appears as an extra. It seems to work quite well most of the time - although re-reading the Essential Information in light of your comments I could definitely highlight it more there.
It's always useful to go over these things and to look at how they could be improved so thanks again for taking the time to comment.
Over 25 years of camping and this is my favourite campsite
I took my boys of 13 and 15 away for a couple of days as they had spent a lot of time indoors (c-19). Fro the minute we arrived we loved the relaxed vibe. All other campers said hello throughout. There is at least 25 meters between pitches and we had (in my opinion) the pest pitch number 10. It is set in dappled sunlight over looking the other tents with a lovely view across the field. To be able to have a fire was a real treat as well as being able to putting up a hammock. Everyone else was very quite throughout and the only noises at night were the wildlife. Loved the eco toilets. My boys loved the walks to the old quarries (a short walk across the field) which with their moss laden trees and dense fern growth resembled rainforest more than somewhere in England. Stunning. I can no longer go to large noisy campsites where other people ruin your holiday when I know campsites like this exist. Fab

Thank you so much for leaving a review. I'm glad you like the site - and the toilets!
Tranquil and peaceful
Our small family had an amazing time at Vallis Veg. We stayed for a couple of nights and it was “just what the doctor ordered”. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. The place is operated in a very sustainable and regenerative which helps to feel connected to the land and it’s beauty. I would definitely return and recommend this peaceful gem.
Break away from it all
Just back from a lovely couple of nights camping here. Stayed on pitch 8. Great size for our tent in woodland location with a fire pit which was great. (All pitches have their own fire pit). The site is very basic but set out well and the toilet and sink area is kept very clean. Good space between pitches so you get some privacy. Lots of lovely walks to get yourself out on. Nearest pub is around a 10 minute walk away through the fields and a further 10 minutes through the village is a co-op if you need supplies and a chip shop. We took a long walk through the woods along Mells river. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side. The rain was torrential! Make sure you take something to do in case of rainy days like this. I was happy to just watch the rain and take in the view from my tent. We intentionally parked our car up with no intention of getting back in it until we went home so every where we went was on foot. Very relaxing break away from it all in a beautiful area with plenty to get out and see. Batteries well and truly recharged.
Response from Camping in Nature at Vallis Veg
Hi Mel, thanks so much for your review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in spite of the insane rain!
My partner and I stayed at pitch number 6 for 2 perfect nights. Pitch 6 had ample space for our 6 man tent and hammock. The campsite was easy to find and when we arrived it was easy to find where to park and where our pitch was. The information board had all our questions answered and we easily found where to collect our preordered fire wood. The pitch was beautifully secluded and the trees gave us some much needed shade in the morning. All the pitches were well spaced which gave us a real sense of privacy and made us feel that we were wild camping. The facilities were basic, as expected, but spotlessly clean. Plus the fire wood supplied to pre order or purchase on site made our campsite extra cozy. For us, we wanted a quiet break away surrounded by nature - which is what we got. Sitting listening to the birds singing in the morning and the crackle of the campfire at night was heaven! There were lots of lovely walks in the area, we walked to Nunney across fields and through woodland, then wondered around the castle - worth a trip. Nunney was also a very picturesque village.
A most excellent site with various types of plots for solos or groups. A very good & clean washing area with plenty of wood available. Lots of walks and exploring possibilities with Frome a short distance. Can't actually fault it to be honest, tho' if you're on foot be warned the site from the road is a steep one, I suggest the path over the top. Tis' my new fave site. Real camping...& as cheap as chips.
Great covid proof experience
Had the best “wild” camp experience away from home after weeks in lockdown! The facilities were very clean and other campers respectful to the safety measures in place. Frome is worth a visit too.
Beautiful and secluded stay
We had a wonderful weekend at Vallis Veg, a real gem of a campsite that has a perfect mix of wild camping and simple facilities, with an easy walk to the lovely town of Frome. We will be back :)
This site is a real gem, beautifully laid out pitches, each with its own fire pit, probably as close as you can get to the wild camping experience -but with the convenience of, err, conveniences on site! The toilets were clean and pong-free, fire wood when needed, and the owners/staff were friendly and helpful. Five stars!
Lovely wild camping in a young forest
Perfect for people who like wild camping but could do with some amenities, our pitch was surrounded by young trees and couldn't see anyone. Fire pit was great to cook on and the compost toilet was clean and nearby. Friendly staff and nice walks nearby. Only thing I might add is a solar light in the wash area for ease at night but not a problem.
Fantastic Camping Experience
This is an amazing camp site to visit. There are a couple sites with full A-frame's that are full equipped with tarps over the seating and fire pit. There is potable water, wash up sinks, toilets, and a bucket shower in a communal stand. The owners also have a stack of firewood for purchase onsite to make your life even easier. Just on the outskirts of Frome, there is grocery and whatever else you need to pick up once you pitch your tent. I would absolutely return, probably the best car camping experience you can get within 3 hrs of London.
Back to nature camping
Myself and my 8-year old son loved it here. Our pitch was one of the smaller ones nestled in the woods, lovely to wake up to birdsong from the trees around us. The pre-bagged firewood available for a camp fire was an added bonus, as was the veg for sale direct from the farm. Great walks near the site, too. Such a chilled place and really friendly, welcoming people working there.
Lovely nature site
Very nice place to stay peaceful and relaxing in a great area lovely riverside walks straight from camp
My partner and I stayed for two nights and absolutely LOVED it! We had pitch no.6 as our tent is quite large and it was just beautiful, positioned on the top of the hill, with a grass area to sit on and enjoy the sunset, and the woodland area for the tent- absolutely perfect! Hidden away, it really felt like you were camping in the wild! Taff came and introduced himself and let us know where he was if we needed anything, he was really welcoming and lovely. Frome was a lovely town and only a quick walk away through the fields 🤗 Will definitely be back! Xxx
Absolutely loved it!!!
Stayed here for 2 nights with my 8 year old son. We had an absolutely amazing time!! All the feels of wild camping with the added convenience of a toilet. Very clean site, very friendly and helpful staff and surrounded by beautiful woodlands and streams to play. We will be back!!!
Absolutely amazing place. A true back to basic campsite. We are camping a lot and usually we are looking for semi-wildcamp sites. This one was the best so far💕🤘
So much better than camping in a fieid! Private sites each surrounded by young woodland, basic but clean and adequate facilities, quiet. Nice flat site even though the ground is on a slope. Birds galore
Secluded yet communal
Each pitch is separated by trees so although they are pretty close, you still feel like you have a sense of privacy. Simple but fully functional facilties are a short walk from all sites. A really nice place to spend camping with friends or family.
Totally Enjoyable getaway
I thoroughly enjoyed my camp here. Instructions are well laid out on a notice board when you arrive. Facilities (toilet and water) excellent. Very clean and tidy no litter anywhere. Pitch was clean, tidy, and secluded. Fire area was lovely managed to cook a decent chilli con carne. great fun toasting marsh mellows later on in the night. If your gonna stay up late recommend 2 bags of fire wood. Only one minor issue and really this is nit picking I couldn’t find any newspaper in the log pile. But just pinched a toilet roll from one of the toilets ( as there were a few in each one). Great experience and would Highly recommended.
wild and safe
We camp here as part of our Forest School summer experience and it is perfect. The darkness, trees, wildlife (bats, owls, foxes....) yet freedom to have a fire and for our excited children tosafely go off on their own on a slug watch with torches cannot be beaten. Wild and safe.
I couldn’t recommend this campsite more. As camping novices I knew from the off that I didn’t want to be squeezed together in a field with other tents and our experience at Vallis Veg was far from that. The pitches were perfect, far enough from other campers but close enough to see them, this added a feel of privacy but security (first time camping with myself and a child) at night time all you could see was the distant fires of your neighbours it felt completely wild. The toilets looked brand new and for compost toilets smelt rather clean! The fire pit area on your own pitch was fantastic and we was always only a short walk away from our car. It was just perfect, we will be back again for sure.
What beautiful campsites, secluded and private in young woodland glades. Facilities all you need and very eco, fires allowed (essential camping requirement for me), and couldn't be further from the standard marked out pitches in a flat field! Lovely walk across the fields to great pubs. Saw a barn owl! Just perfect.
A hidden gem!
A beautiful setting with secluded, carefully thought out and peaceful pitches. Each level pitch has its own campfire spot which really adds to the feeling that this is 'proper camping'! Excellent location. A short distance and brief walk to Frome (lovely town with plenty to do and see). Also, very close to the cycle route up to Bath. A great site, friendly and helpful owners. Highly recommended.
Peaceful and idyllic
Quiet, nice walk into mells, short drive to shops. Friendly host and other campers. Personal campfire area next to tent - made the experience. Trees and bushes etc... make you feel like you have a personal private area - although you could see next door campsite Charge for car park a little pricey - considering no public transport links to the site itself and short walk from nearby towns. However pitches close to car so easy to walk back and forward if you leave things in your car. Toilet bit unusual - as a first time camper was strange not to have a flush
Exactly what I love in a campsite. Quiet, friendly owner and fires allowed. Don't need anything else
Not for people who want all mod cons but that's not what camping is about. Compost toilet is fine once you just accept it. Beautiful riverside walk into Mells and we went to Longleat which was a great day out. Lovely few days. Thankyou
It is like a private wilderness
The pitches are so far from each other and surrounded by woods so you hardly know anyone else is there. A beautiful spot and beautiful streams and woods and walks nearby. Of course, because you are in the thick of nature, you have to be happy to share your space with nature; plenty of slugs, snails and spiders...
Bank Holiday Beauty!
I was given a campsite request (demand) by my wife for a secluded pitch, nice walking spots & good cycle routes and I couldn’t have picked a better place that Vallis Veg! Pottered in Frome for a couple of beers Saturday evening, Sunday we strolled around Cheddar Gorge & Monday we cycled the Colliers Way bike route from Bath to Frome; all of which contributed to a superb weekend & topped off by a stunning pitch at the super friendly campsite. Highly recommended!
Amazing camping experience!
This campsite was everything I could have asked for an escape to nature. The surrounding areas to for for walks were stunning, the vegetable patches and grounds on the campsite were great to explore, and the pitches were secluded with eveything you need! Our pitch was up a little path, then up another little path past our tent was an area to have campfires and logs to sit on. The whole setup was perfect, can not reccommend enough!
Beautiful, peaceful campsite
Absolutely perfect to get away from it all. The pitches are a good size and seem fairly private due to surrounding trees Despite only having one toilet and the whole site booked up it was never busy and never had to wait. Will definitely return for another break and explore more of the area next time - apparently there is a river close by which is ideal for hot weather!
Really beautiful back to basics site
I camped here for a single night and just loved the quiet basic setting. A composting toilet and a sink are the only amenities you need, and although I could see two other tents from my site I felt secluded and it was very quiet. I would definitely book Woodland Site No. 2 again, or book a field pitch if I came with my family. The walk to Frome was quick and very pretty across the fields. The public parking lot at the bottom of the lane is the top of an absolutely stunning footpath leading to Great Elm and Mells, the latter being equipped with a gorgeous community run shop and cafe. The only thing missing was that I would have loved to join in on a communal campfire or social experience in the evening, but you can't have everything in life! I'll be back!
could be improved
Pretty surroundings and friendly owner but really very basic facilities and we didn't think all that suitable for children. Not really enough room in the group camping field for the kids to run around without getting stung by lots of nettles. (beware ticks too, had to pull quite a few out!) Could be improved by maybe a simple play area for the kids and a better set up washing-up area (if they could organise hot water, even better). Compost toilet a nice idea but needs to be better done, as it blocked up quite quickly. We were not impressed by having to pay £7 per vehicle per DAY. Great to discourage driving but pretty tricky to take children and camping stuff to the countryside without a vehicle. We've never had to pay a vehicle charge per day before anywhere else and this felt a bit cheeky and made the overall experience seem overpriced for what you got. Still managed to have a nice time with friends but definitely room for improvement.
