A tents-only, dog-friendly site with campfires allowed in Somerset

When it comes down to it, what do you really need from a campsite? For many of us, the answer is a flat pitch, a water supply, and somewhere to go to the loo. If you fall into this camp (pardon the pun) then you are going to love Loves Hill Camping. This simple summer campsite in Somerset is as laid-back as they come; it’s tents only, dog friendly and campfires are allowed.

Situated between the Cotswolds and the Mendip Hills, Loves Hill offers a rural, edge-of-village location that means you can relax in the countryside but still be within walking distance of a pub, a shop, and a chippie. The campsite is essentially a large, level field, some eight acres, that’s been mown into shape by owner Nick to create a place to stay for a month in the summer. As befits a place that’s usually used to grow grass for winter feed, it’s as eco-friendly as he can make it with composting loos and hot water showers with waste water destined to irrigate nearby fields.

You can drive to your pitch and camp where you like, thanks to a free-style pitching policy. And while Nick is on hand to welcome you, tell you what’s what and sell you logs for your campfire, you are generally left to enjoy the peace and quiet of the setting   – however you see fit.

There’s plenty of space for kicking a ball about but there’s a tempting footpath that leads off site too. Follow it for a mile or so and you’ll reach the banks of a nearby river, The Cam Brook, with a bridleway that’s part of the Limestone Link long-distance footpath. The two ends of that route are in the nearby Cotswolds and Mendips Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where there’s plenty more walking on offer. Bath is within 10 miles of site, Wookey Hole Caves and Longleat Safari Park within 20.

There are five showers on site (with hot water) and two block of five composting toilets (10 in total). Used shower water is stored, treated, and used to irrigate the neighbouring fields. Fires are permitted on-site and in off-ground fire pits which are available to hire on site. Logs are also for sale.

Suitable For

Campers, dogs (and other pets) – yes. Campervans, motorhomes, caravans – no.

The campsite is situated in the small village of Timsbury, which boasts a shop, pub, chip shop, and a park for those little humans. A footpath runs through the site and offers a route to walk down to the Cam Brook river, less than a mile away. Families with children might also be interested in Chew Valley Animal Park (07711 893964), 10 miles from the site, Wookey Hole Caves (01749 672243), or the East Somerset Railway (01749 880417), which are both 13 miles away. And there's always Longleat Safari Park, a drive of about 40 minutes (17 miles) away. Bath is within 10 miles of site and Bristol is within 15 with plenty of country walking in the nearby Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Cotswolds AONB, equidistant east and west.

Food & Drink

There are plans for local food trucks to visit site so ask Nick on arrival whether to expect anything during your stay. Down the road in Timsbury, there's a fish and chip shop , Our Plaice (01761 470418), and a pub ,The Seven Stars, as well as The Connies Tea Room (01761 568451). There's also a Co-op if you want to stock up on supplies and cook on site.

Getting There

From the A39, take the turning towards Timsbury (in Farmborough if coming from the north, or High Littleton from the south). If approaching from Farmborough follow the road south until you reach the crossroad by the recreation ground, straight over here and right at the T-junction at the end of this road. The campsite is approximately 750m on the left. If approaching from High Littleton, on the A39 take the turning for Timsbury then turn left at the mini roundabout and follow the road out in to the sticks. You will drop down the hill and, as it winds back up towards the village, you will be heading up Loves hill. Once in the village, there will be a wall on the left and an open field on the right. The campsite is 100m on the right after the 20mph sign. The best train station to use is Bath which has good bus links with Timsbury, a journey of 30 minutes. The campsite is a short walk from the bus stop. Nick may be able to come and help with your luggage if you have too much to carry and give a little warning.

Honestly probably one of the nicest campsites i've ever been to - feel very lucky to have found it!!

Pitch Perfect

Nick the Owner was absolutely fantastic, extremely welcoming and generous with his time. This is Nick’s first season and boy what a start. The layout was perfect, different areas mowed out, allowing family and friends to be together but allowing plenty of space between fellow campers. Love Hill has that easy relaxed vibe. Compost toilets were really clean, and regularly cleaned. Showers one of the best I have used on a campsite. Washing up area with two sinks. Plenty of water taps on site, never too far to walk for water. Recycling and General Waste bins, plentiful on site and emptied regularly. Fire pits available to hire and Nick sold seasoned logs. At the weekend Nick had fresh coffee, croissants and pastries for sale, which was really appreciated. You could leave your phone with Nick to charge for a small fee. We went to Wells which is not too far and is well worth a visit, especially the Cathedral. I would also say it’s worth going to Book Barn International, selling second hand books and records, it also has a coffee shop (less than 10 mins drive). Unfortunately I would highly recommend this Campsite, I say unfortunately as I want to keep it as a well-kept secret. Thank you Nick for looking after us so well. Looking forward to seeing you next year.

Enjoyable, relaxing, well run, friendly

This is a well thought out site, with plenty of space and an eco-friendly ethos. The owner, Nick, is friendly and welcoming, the toilets are clean and well stocked. The shower block is one of the best I've seen on a campsite, and the basics are well covered. Sinks for washing up and stand pipes for drinking water. Plenty of rubbish barrels for waste and recycle barrels as well. The site is flat for the majority , but the further along you go the better views you get. Dogs are welcome and ours loved the attention she got. Definitely a site I would revisit. 18-22 Aug 2021.

Friendly, no frills campsite, with lovely countryside views

Nick the owner was fantastic! Never too busy to help or answer questions. Tent pitch layout was lovely and had a bit of a wild camping feel. Fab showers , composting loos, washing up area ( no hot water) water pipes at regular intervals with recycling and rubbish bins ( collected regularly.) Tea/ coffee and croissants available on Saturday and Sunday am. Fire pits with wood . Very easy and relaxing. Our lab Guinness had a fantastic time as lots of walks around. Definitely booking for next year !

The perfect getaway in nature

This is a great little campsite, with everything you need and nothing you don't. There are clean composting toilets, warm showers, and washing up sinks on hand, but apart from that it's all hay bails, firepits and good vibes. There's plenty of space around the pitches so you can camp with friends and family and have space from others, which also meant noise was never a problem. There are firepits and wood to hire, and tea, coffee and croissants available to buy in the morning. Nick was super friendly and helpful, even happily jump-starting our car when we needed help! Can't recommend enough, it's just a shame it's not open for more of the summer!

Brilliant and Perfect

Our two families stayed for two nights at Loves Hill and had a excellent stay. Nick has created the perfect vibe at the campsite with his laid back and chilled out style. We were met and greeted on arrival with an explanation of how stuff worked. We chose a spot and pitched…simple as that. The compost toilets were in a very clean state and didn’t pong. The showers were warm and clean. There was a small washing up area that was never that busy so always available. In the morning there were fresh pastries and coffee available to buy - lovely touch! There was also kindling and logs available to buy for the fire pit (could hire those too). All-in-all, a perfect way to spend a couple of days chilling out. We will be back.

Bedraggled cyclist saved by brilliant host.

Nick is such a lovely guy. I arrived soaked to the skin having cycled through several downpours. Nick (the host) was himself trying to dig his van out of the mud but immediately downed tools and made me very welcome. His site is eco-friendly, has great facilities, and plenty of space per pitch. The Seven Stars pub is an easy walk and well worth a visit. By the end of the evening I felt much more cheerful.

Farmer had a friendly manner, helpful and very accommodating. Lovely setting and great facilities. Will return.

Lovely location, brilliant ECO-friendly facilities, rustic field - how I believe camping should be. Really welcoming, Overall a fabulous experience, would go back again. We had an amazing time.
