Easy-going camping for all, just a stroll away from famous Cheddar Gorge
Following it’s 2005 appearance in the television series Seven Natural Wonders, the craggy cliffs and dazzling caves of Cheddar Gorge were voted the second greatest natural wonder in the UK, and it doesn’t take an expert to see why. As you follow the windy riverbed road along the former route of the Cheddar Yeo, steep green slopes carve ever deeper before you and one can’t help but wonder how it looked with water thundering through. In fact, the river does still flow, now far beneath the surface, and its handy work has continued below ground, carving out spectacular caves and narrow limestone tunnels. It’s not until you reach the village itself that the water reappears, slithering away from the beautiful Mendip Hills. It is here, on the doorsteps of Cheddar Village, that Petruth Paddocks can be found and its open grassy meadows beckon any would-be camper inside.
Down a track to the wooden gateway, campers, glampers and caravan towers alike arrive directly into a large open field, fronted by a small white reception tent and a pair of picnic benches. After a chat with easy-going Jules, the site becomes your own and it’s entirely up to you where you pitch. Chose from the plentiful space before you, with two pre-pitched tipis at the rear of the field, or head through a gate into the next-door meadow, aptly described as the ‘chill-out field’. At its centre, a dilapidated landrover has become every child’s playground, saddling up in the drivers seat or clambering on the bonnet, while to one side a horse paddock nudges the edge of the campsite, another distraction for playful children.
The relaxed, pitch-where-you-like, attitude continues through the rest of the site, which rightfully prides itself on a laid back philosophy and welcoming atmosphere for all. Music is welcome, balls can be kicked around, and campfires are very much encouraged, with a quad bike humming around the site each evening offering more firewood and kindling to those in need. Don’t be surprised when the trailer comes past with as many children as logs on the back – the quad is a popular ride with the little ones!
In the centre of the site, by the gate between the different fields, simple sanitary facilities are provided. Hot showers are housed in spacious cabins, so there’s plenty of space to hang your clothes, with an adjacent toilet block on one side and washing up sinks on the other. There are also a number of drinking water taps dotted around the site.
From your pitch head by foot, bike or car into the surrounding area, stopping at reception to grab some info and brochures. By foot, it is Cheddar that beckons, with a collection of good eateries and the gateway back into the gorge. Those on two wheels should follow the Strawberry Line, an excellent cycle route that starts within meters of the campsite. Taking the car offers plenty to see and do, whether it be historic Wells' magnificent cathedral, Glastonbury Tor or the beautiful beaches of northern Somerset.

Nice and friendly staff
Spot on campsite all the facilities were brilliant very clean site .Showers red hot ,we only stayed a few days cycling around Somerset staff were very helpful will use this site again and will recommend it to my friends .
Best campsite we’ve stayed in to date
Awesome campsite, very chilled out but fun, great facilities and stunning locaction. Great communication and help with anything from the staff.
Peace and quiet
Laid back and relaxed. The site had all we needed for our stay, toilets and shower blocks very clean, a little dated but nothing that we found a problem. If it is 5 star camping you are after this is not for you but if back to basics, no frills, relaxed friendly is then I highly recommend. Showers were great. Easy walk to Cheddar, beautiful scenery, nice beer and great food.
Location good for visiting nearby towns
Stayed here for 10 nights. Chose here mainly due to location, but doubt I will return. Having to pay £2 per night for a fire pit, and if you want one you need to pay for your full stay so this was £20 + they try to sell you paper and kindling seperate, (glad I know how to light a fire so I did not buy this) then £5 for bag of logs which is about bog standard for campsites so not complaining about that. If it had rained for the 10 nights the fire pit would have been a waste of money. As for toilets and Shower facilities, they are a joke. Although kept fairly clean, there are not enough for the amount of people this site takes. If you wanted a shower in the morning, forget it unless you want to queue. I know they warn you about this on web site but for the money this site takes in on a daily basis I am sure they could improve the facilities to accomodate the amount of people they have. I have been to a lot of sites which are cheaper and have much better facilities. If someone is using washing up area, the shower pressure reduces. One of the signs on the site by chemical waste asked that you only use 1 litre of water to clean out your chemical toilet to keep their charges down!! I am sure the flush in toilets was more than this and much less in these than a chemical toilet that a family has been using for a day or two. Pot holes could do with filling in with some hardcore at entrance to 2nd field as they were huge and when raining causes so much mud getting trailed into shower areas as well as tents etc. All in all probably a good site for large parties or young families but it is not a site for chilling out and have a relaxing holiday. Staff were all pleasant. Pitch sizes with EHU were good size, but this site is just a money grabber in my view.
For my first camping holiday I chose an amazing place to choose. The staff are fantastic and visible so you can always find one. The fire pits are delivered to your tent with everything you need which adds an amazing touch to the stay. Definitely recommend and will definitely be coming again.
Lovely site with friendly hosts and really close to Cheddar
This campsite had 3 huge flat fields, we chose the ‘quiet field’ which gave us large pitches but still had easy access to the facilities. There are cold water taps at the end of every row. We had a non electric pitch for our van, and the field was so well drained that we did not get stuck even though it had been raining heavily. The breakfast tea/coffee bar and baps&butties stand were very welcome, and we saw a mobile stone-baked pizza van there on the Saturday night. Bearing in mind that it was a bank holiday, there were probably just about enough toilets and teeth-brushing sinks. 7 showers was not really enough at peak times, but avoiding those times resulted in a good experience. Showers were free, had a sensible amount of hooks, a bench and a sensible grid on which to stand while drying that keeps your feet clean. There were only 2 hot water washing up sinks but we did not have to wait long to use them. The town of Cheddar is a 10-15 minute walk away and has lots of pubs and amenities. There are 2 supermarkets there. The Strawberry line off-road cycle route starts in the town, and so does Cheddar Gorge. This was a wonderful site and we look forward to coming back when there is a little less rain. Thank you Petruth Paddocks.
Friendly, but not for us
We went on the bank holiday weekend and it was like a well managed festival, without the bands. Queues for the loos and showers, tents packed so close you could hear everything, quad bikes and tractors zooming around till late in the evening trying to deal hundreds of people, so not my idea of getting back to nature, but a lovely location and nice touches like the breakfast hut.
Lovely site and amazing staff!
We came for one night from a residential care home with two service users. The site was beautiful and clean and the staff made us feel so welcome and made everything very easy to organise. Fire drums, logs etc and even marshmallows were available to rent/buy on site which made things super easy for us. Staff were helpful and friendly and the location of the campsite was great too - walking distance to town and all the great attractions such as the caves. We also loved the camp dogs! Highly recommend.
Relaxed and great to be able to play music and have a fire
A really good campsite with a great attitude. Loved that we could choose our own pitch. Having logs delivered to the tent with the fire pits made life easy and the site literally lights up a night with the glow from the 🔥. Short walk into Cheddar to some good pubs and the Thai restaurant was delicious.
Lovely cosy shepards hut!
Lovely campsite and well organised. Really busy in peak period in main field for family camping, which happens to be where the shepards huts are. Hut itself is lovely, great not to have to put the tent up, would be even better if it was in the quieter field, or just choose to go outside school hols.
First time camping in nearly 20 years I was quite daunted by the prospect of going back again. On arrival we were met by helpful staff who gave us leaflets on the local area and some handy information. The site was tidy with pitches well spaced out. We did mostly enjoy our stay, however, I did feel that although the showers were hot, there could be more than 8 to 600 people. The toilets were also less than ideal- I don’t expect amazing things when camping but they didn’t smell great at all. Overall an okay stay.
The simple life in a beautiful setting
A brief 2-night visit, but loved every second. A short walk from Cheddar and all of it's amenities, we took advantage of local activities: caving and horse trekking. The staff were all friendly and helpful and they offer lots of services, including the coffee and breakfast truck, as well as campfires and wood. Facilities were clean and user friendly. Potentially could do with a couple more showers during peak season but caused us no issues over a relaxing weekend!
One of our favourite places
Just had our second visit and already planning our third. Facilities are basic and I always wish the toilets had a bit more elbow room but they are clean (mostly - it rained one evening so things were a bit muddy but hardly unexpected) the water is hot and the showers do the job! Love the relaxed attitude and think the staff are lovely. Sitting round the fire watching the meteor shower was a highlight. Having access to a freezer and charge points make life easier. Also like the whole recycling ethos and it was surprisingly easy to get the children involved considering they are less enthusiastic about it at home!!
Love Petruth Paddocks. Stayed before and will stay again. Came with young son and did two nights. Super friendly team on-hand, tidy and safe field with ample range to enjoy own space or get involved with other campers. Good and clean facilities. Surrounded by brilliant countryside on all sides. What is there not to like?!
ticked all the right boxes
What a lovely place to stay! The showers were better than ours at home! There was a staff member around to help all the time. The Free Range Camping Guide that you receive upon arrival is well thought out. Everything that you needed was accessible. Areas that suited each individuals camping requirement was spaced out and relaxed. Our children (4yo & 2yo) were safe while they played happily outside. It was a great start to our family holiday.
Relaxed atmosphere, family friendly camping
Wonderfull place to camp! Never been without toilet paper and the facilities are always clean. You get a small booklet with information, about the camping, but also the surroundings. Very useful. Loads to do in the area, but staying on site is definitely not a punishment. Special field for families and non families, everything for a campfire will be brought to your tent once the 'rounds of the quad' begin. You can visit the animals at specific times and in the weekends there are plenty of activities for everyone. Plenty toilets and showers, you never have to wait long if you have to wait at all. Special facilities for brushing teeth (finally a plane where mum and dad can brush together with the kids!) A coffee tent in the morning and an ice cream cart in the afternoon. That's enough for five stars if you ask me, but then there's Jules, the owner who, after many years of working on the camping, still tries to remember the name of every single person that camps here. His enthusiasm is simply wonderfull. 10 or of 10 for me!
Relaxed, friendly atmosphere
What a lovely little site with very friendly staff. My first stay here following a recommendation, we were able to pitch where we fancied so opted for a larger opening in the middle of the field friends were joining us so decided to put the tents around us leaving a communal area in the middle. Absolutely loved the fire pits that were delivered each evening, nothing like sitting out to all hours in front of the fire, we were particularly lucky to witness the meteor shower each night with lots of shooting stars. Came away feeling totally relaxed despite having 10 children with us, they loved the outdoor space, playing football and cricket, pony rides and meeting the animals, we all loved the ice cream man that came round daily. Only small issue and not a massive problem was the lack of toilet paper one morning as we tended to be up and about before the cleaner arrived but this was following a very busy Sunday and only encountered the once. Lovely stay in a relaxed site.
Response from Petruth Paddocks
So glad you had such a lovely time Joanna :) Sorry about the paper issue - our cleaner texted in sick but I didn't pick up her message till 7 - went and did it myself but an hour late!
She'll be calling in future........
Hope to welcome you back soon
Relaxed happy friendly site. Nothing too much trouble for Jules and the team. Perfect for groups, families couples friends.
Open fires , lots of space, coffee and food vans at weekends throughout the summer. Great showers and washing area, organised recycling. Easy walk to Cheddar Gorge, Sunday car boot . What's not to like
I stayed here as part of a group of women with children. On arrival we were made to feel very welcome and there was nothing the staff and owners could not do to help us. Throughout our stay everyone was very helpful and friendly. The children were allowed to play and relax at their own leisure Overall this one one of the best camping experience I have had!! Thank you
Fields surrounded by hills and within walking distance to Cheddar
An absolute gem! Stayed in a campervan with adult family who camped opposite us. Havnt camped for years but fancied a change and was not disappointed, the experience helped by the excellent weather. Facilities were good, clean, friendly and helpful staff. Fire drums are a wonderful idea which we enjoyed each evening. Lots of activities for youngsters to enjoy, tried the tie dying myself !! Would recommend.
Absolutely love this place. We returned this year after visiting last year for the first time. It was recommended to us by friends. We are a family of 5 and it was enjoyed by all. It's family run and they are all so welcoming and do not hesitate to help with anything. They put on lovely things for the children. We will be returning again next year, if not before! Thank you again!! Only issue we had this year was wasps, not a lot they can do about them though!
Wonderful and well organised
Brilliant place with everything you'd ever need and brilliant and attentive staff who will go out of their way at every opportunity to help. Exactly as it says on the tin.
Super welcoming feel
A really welcoming team/family. Everyone was always willing to help with any questions I had. Facilities were clean, shower was warm with power, Wi-Fi, fire pits were a lovely touch but was a shame we didn't get to use it due to me picking the one weekend of rain to go camping!!!! Nightmare! Will definitely be returning to get use of the fire pits and local wild swimming opportunities and nice walk (away from the rain)
Such amazing hosts
Jules and the team are the friendliest, most helpful hosts we've ever come across. A number of times they went out of their way to help us have the best time. The campsite is so beautiful and relaxing plus you can't beat sitting round an open fire in the evening and toasting marshmallows. :)
Laid Back Camping
Great site and really friendly. Facilities were clean and couldn't fault. Loved the fire drums. Thanks.
Large site with Festival vibe
Stayed overnight on way to Cornwall. Loved the atmosphere and child friendly relaxed setup. Will definitely be back
Brilliant site! We arrived midweek for a short 3 night break with our two children - 9 year old and 20 month old - and it was ideal for them. My eldest really enjoyed climbing/playing with the land rover in the middle of the site. It became the hub of activity for all the children throughout our stay! He made new friends every day and was out exploring or playing different games with his new friends. My 20 month old also enjoyed playing on the landrover, looking at the animals and running around the field. She made friends with some younger children in the tent next door to us. Staff- The staff were fantastic and very helpful! As soon as we are arrived we were greeted and shown the site. The staff also told us about the area and the way you can walk into Cheddar from the site. Food - in the mornings midweek there would be a food van selling basic breakfast baps (vegetarian options available) and there is also a Sainsbury’s not too far from the site. On the Friday night/Saturday morning there was another pop up food van that sold burgers and chips on the evening and breakfast baps in the morning. The coffee hut was also open on Saturday morning which was nice! Facilities - The toilets and showers were always clean and well maintained. I didn’t have to wait to use any of them. There are a couple of basins to brush your teeth and there is somewhere to wash up your plates. They also have a freezer and a charging point for phones!!! This is the first time I’ve seen a charging area in a campsite and it was a welcome addition! Cheddar is just a short walk from site and we explored the caves there. They were amazing and we had a fantastic day out. As we’re local we used our longleat passes to get 50% off the tickets! We also went to Shepton Mallet Lido which is only about 20/30 minutes drive away from the site. All in all it was a fantastic few days. We spent our days exploring and our evenings sat around a fire pit (you can rent one) toasting marshmallows. We were recommended this site by a friend and we will definitely be passing on that recommendation to others! Thank you for a wonderful stay. We will be back!
Camping without rules
I just stayed 1 night, in a campervan, after travelling fòr a week with my dog. What bliss to be able to let my dog run free instead of tethering her! Other campers were similarly relaxed and friendly. The owners were there to help if needed, and provided the best information booklet I've ever seen - all useful info about the area. Coffee and breakfast was available too! I'll definitely be back. Thanks for the enjoyable time 😊
Friendly and relaxed campsite with lovely views
Friendly and relaxed campsite with lovely views
Wonderful campsite with great facilities. Location to Cheddar, the seaside and Bristol meant we got to visit lots of places during our stay.
Friendly relaxed campsite
Really enjoyed our stay, great staff good attention to detail and good local knowledge. Also catered for all camping requirements we stayed in a more quiet area of the site over looking the horses field. We will caome back here even though it is not far from home!
Lovely friendly campsite with good facilities and local amenities
Always welcoming, friendly, helpful and nothing is a problem. Will stay again
Great hospility, great location, always welcoming, good facilities. Will definitely be coming back
Perfect place for a chilled quick getaway weekend with friends
We had a lovely quick getaway to Petruth Paddocks, meeting a couple of friends for a wonderfully chilled-out weekend. Great site and location close to Cheddar Gorge and the beautiful Mendips, and the site facilities and staff were great! Would definitely recommend, and will be coming back for sure!
This is the most chilled out place ever.
I returned to petruth with my new girlfriend after visiting on my own last year, for anyone who likes camping in a beautiful chilled out place this is it !! Definitely get a fire pit for your experience, well worth the money and wonderful sitting round a fire staring at the stars.
So relaxed, such an enjoyable site in an ideal location.
This is the first time my wife and I, with a group of old friends from Hampshire have visited Petruth Paddocks and after our five day stay we were all of the same opinion, it had been a great place to stay and we all thoroughly enjoyed the warm welcome of the staff and the lovely site. Jules was so friendly and helpful and went out of his way to make our trip memorable. The whole ethos of the site encouraged a relaxed atmosphere that was perfect when there are so many lovely places to visit in the area and you can look forward to returning to the site each evening knowing that you can relax and enjoy good company safe in the knowledge that your chat and laughter would be encouraged! A great place to visit and we will return; very well done to all at Petruth Paddocks!
Fantastic place and great for kids & dogs
I took my children aged 2 & 5 plus my shaggy dog for one nights camping over the weekend. We were made very welcome straight from the beginning and my two boys and the dog had a great time smiling and laughing from the moment we arrived until the minute we left. Such a great environment for kids and they can’t wait to return for our next adventure. The camp fire went down a treat as did the friendly people who were camping around us. Please don’t change this place it needs to remain the same forever!
We went for a long weekend and had a fantastic time. Even though we arrived late (if you arrive after 8pm you have to ring ahead and let them know) they were still welcoming and friendly, driving us around the site to help us find a good spot and delivering the stuff for a fire right to our door. The facilities are great- the showers and toilets are clean and there are plenty of them. There is also a hot food and drink stand on sight which does pretty yummy food too if you don't want to cook! Cheddar is just a ten minute walk through residential streets from the sight so easy to navigate and there is a play ground on the way which is great for kids. On Sunday's there is also a massive car boot in the field next door which is definitely worth a walk round. If you have any questions at all the team will be more then happy to help with anything!
Best place ever
Stayed over the second bank holiday in May 2018, this was our groups 2nd visit, and again we were not disappointed. The children were free to just ride their bikes and run around, you just knew they were safe. The ethos is to just pitch up, kick back and relax, and that we did. Joules and the team are very friendly and welcoming, a real family business, nothing is too much to ask. We love that we can have a camp fire at our pitches. The addition of the food van and coffee hut for this summer is a great addition as take always close fairly early in town. Love that you can just walk into town and explore Cheddar. There is a real festival feel about Petruth Paddocks, the showers and toilets are regularly cleaned and staff are constantly sorting tidying or seeing to customers needs etc. I would highly recommend this site for those that don't mind a no thrills camp site, but the best that life has to offer. Love this place and shall be back again soon.
Very friendly & relaxed
Just had 2 nights at this very friendly & relaxed site. Close to Cheddar but still beautifully rural. Lovely staff, good facilities, on site coffee and food if you don’t want to cook, nice scenery, fires in washing machine drums an interesting idea (lends itself to more flexibility on where to pitch). Having said that we were told where to pitch but only after discovering what kind of group we were and whether we wanted to be with the young kids or towards the “later bedtime” end of the fields! Great attention to detail. Would definitely visit again.
Not as described
I was looking for a "back to basics" camping experience, and to a degree we got it, but in all the wrong ways. An overcrowded site, with over stretched facilities. Queuing for a urinal was an experience I thought only for festivals. I raised this with the owner, only to be told it was due to the bank holiday! What ever the date is, over crowding a campsite is putting profits ahead of campers. Not impressed. Feel let down and would never go back.
Convenient camping for cheddar
My family and I had a 3 night stay in a pre-erected bell tent over the bank holiday weekend. It was very busy, as expected, which meant a bit of queuing for loos, showers and washing up facilities but the waits were never too long. I was very impressed how clean they kept all the facilities and delighted with the hot, powerful showers. The staff were very friendly and happy to help out. As the site was so busy, I was a bit anxious it might be noisy after dark but all was peaceful. The coffee bar and the hut selling bacon butties did make this a bit more like glamping There are lots to do in Cheddar for all ages, even in the rain, so no need to venture further afield. Cheddar is only a 10mindrive away so it is easy to pop back and forth if needed The downside is that the site is very big and when it was busy it did feel like camping in a car park! Having said all that, there are plenty of reasons to recommend this site.
Atmosphere, Fun, Great Staff
Stayed here for a few nights, campsite was well maintained and staff were really helpful. There was a good almost "party" atmosphere in the site we stayed in but they also have another area for people not wanting to listen to other peoples music and drinking. All music stops at 11 anyway. They bring round wood (at a price) have shops, coffee stands, food, showers, toilets etc. All is well maintained. Just a few minutes drive from the gorge too, walking will only take you about 15 minutes. Great stay even given the sub-par weather.
This is not a “live and let live” campsite. Too many rules, pushed together in a rectangular field resulting in it feeling you are in a car park. Way too many people for the facilities. We were ordered quite aggressively to turn off our music at 22.00 (despite signs displayed that indicate music off at 23.00). The whole place prioritises making money (expensive food, kid’s activities) over creating the “free range camping experience “ as advertised. Should NOT be in cool camping book.
A pleasant site with a fun and relaxed atmosphere, well located for coatal or inland adventures!
My second stay at Petruth Paddocks and both occasions has been a pleasant and relaxing holiday, I can see us returning many times in the future. Its a lovely site, not too far from the coast or inland adventures. The amenities are well located and of a good, clean, quality. The staff were friendly and helpful. Thanks team!
A fantastic site
A fantastic campsite. Nothing too much trouble for the guys. You get a really handy booklet with all you need to know about your stay and local amenities, also got us a nice discount locally when we had a puncture in our air bed. The kids loved being taken round the campsite on the Quad trailer, and the old jeep is a great meeting place for the kids. Close to Cheddar Gorge and Wookie Hole for great days out Will definitely look to stay again. Thanks guys
Great campsite ..great experience
We had an an amazing couple of days. Not been camping for years and hubby and little people never been so was a tad on edge. Perfect is all I can say!! Will be back !!
Genuinely the real deal :-)
We stayed here for two nights on a grass pitch with a dog. On arrival (especially if you don't know Cheddar) it looks like a campsite on the edge of an Industrial Estate but it's well situated for the town and the gorge and is flat and grassy and with lovely views of the Mendips and the gorge itself. The family run team are laid back but very well organised and the site offers far more than most that we've stayed at (you can even charge your phone in a locker so no real need for an electric pitch). We had clear skies and saw the Perseid Meteor Shower, an unforgettable experience whilst sat around the campfire (washing machine drum fire pits supplied by the owners). Will be back with the children and our bikes. Thank you!
If Only All Campsites Were Like This!
Our family had a fantastic couple of nights staying here in one of their excellent shepherd's huts. We're not great campers (hence the shepherd's hut - and our surname's "Crook"!), so were especially grateful of the friendly assistance we were given when we proved incompetent at getting our BBQ lit, amongst other things. May have even changed our general opinion of campsites as this was relaxed, friendly and very comfortable - despite the rain! The toilets even had Dyson Airblades and potpourri!
Friendly and peaceful
We arrived for our first visit in july 17.within about 45 mins of arriving a cheery guy introduced himself to us as jools.the owner. We spent a while talking and he explained about the facilities, the family run business and to shout if there was anything at all that we needed. Really lovely to be greeted so nicely.reception took time to explain about local cycle routes.great fresh eggs daily laid by the families hens.had a great bike ride and a wonderful anniversary meal at the local thai restaurant recommended by the team.really enjoyed the visit.definately going back very soon.
Just an awesome place.
Been here several times over the years and really can't fault the place. We always bring the dogs and all of us have a truly lovely time. The fire pits are a great addition to an amazing time and we certainly can't fault Jules and the team. So friendly and professional who want you to enjoy your stay and ask that you merely adhere to their relaxed rules. So worth a visit. 5 out of 5 from us.
I've just enjoyed my second stay at Petruth Paddocks and, as before, it didn't disappoint! We had a large group of 17 and had the most wonderful, spacious area to set up our camp. The views are gorgeous, the facilities are great, and Jules and the team are so welcoming and friendly. It's peaceful for such a large site and there were never any queues for the toilets or showers. It's easy walking distance from the town centre and gorge, and an added bonus was that the ground made it easy to get the tent pegs in! There's great wildlife around too - horses, cows, sheep, llamas, alpacas, birds... and make sure you take a trip to the Cider Barn, which is accessed via a lovely walk through country lanes. Highly recommended!
Couldn't ask for more!!
Had a wonderful time, such a relaxed and chilled atmosphere,I forgot 2 air beds at home :( and had a complete melt down, but within minutes of arriving on site we had 2 camp beds delivered to our "door" :) along with a fire drum, kindle, paper, matches and logs couldn't ask for more. We took the quick walk to the village and after kids 15-7yrs got an ice cream from an amazing shop which had so many flavours, they decided they wanted to head back and sit around the campfire :) we didn't get to see much of the village as they didn't want to leave campsite. Everything about the campsite we all enjoyed including the great staff!!! 👏
Quiet and relaxing
Large site where you are left alone with staff nearby if needed. Great open spaces that was just chilled. Facilities great. Loved that you have camp fires on offer every nigh, great touch. Will return.
Relaxed & chilled
No 'don't' signs here ! Friendliest staff. Very basic toilet block, but overlooked by the whole ambience of this place. The fire pits are a must, trust me.
We generally enjoyed our stay at Petruth Paddocks. The facilities were decent and the position of the site was great - being able to walk to Cheddar Gore was Fab! We had an electric pitch which was a nice bit of luxury and was good to have a pitch on the edge of the field by the hedge There was a relaxed feel to the site with a degree of control - be prepared to have your rubbish bag searched to check you've recycled!! It was a shame that by Friday night they had packed so many campers in, and there were not really enough toilets etc.to cope with the number of people there. It was of course a bank holiday weekend so you can understand, to a degree, that they would make the most of that. It was described as Free range camping but bays were marked out and people told where to camp. This may however have been due to the fact it was Bank Holiday and they were incredibly busy. Would recommend this site but perhaps not on a Bank Holiday - unless you love the festival feel!!
Lovely chilled out weekend
A group of 7 friends stayed here for my birthday celebration - really chilled out, toasting marshmallows on the fire, singing along to a couple of us playing the guitar. The facilities are nice and clean, everything you need, and it's only a short walk to Cheddar Gorge which was a treat! Nice atmosphere and very friendly. Will definitely stay again if in the area.
Our New Fave Campsite
Stayed here for 3 nights after a recommendation from a friend. Not disappointed at all. Lovely site, great location and very friendly people. Will definitely stay there again.
10 out of 5 stars!!
I've never been the biggest fan of camping but this place definitely changed my mind! An amazing atmosphere which is well worth the price! We only stayed for one night but we both wished we had stayed for longer. I loved how relaxed the place was and it really helped me to espace from stressful life. I would stay again in a heartbeat! I felt to welcome and well catered for. Can't wait to return!! :)
Felt right at home!
A very chilled out place to stay, the staff were always about and very helpful and friendly. We rocked up and set up camp how we wanted it with no silly restrictions on space or what we were pitching. Facilities were to a good standard and the fact that we could have a little camp fire and all the bits and pieces were supplied at a very reasonable cost, delivered right to your door! I'd go again for sure. We didn't have kids with us but the ones that were there seemed to love it, especially the trailer rides that took place daily :)
10 year wedding anniversary - great fun
We celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary at Petruth Paddocks. Jules, Kelly and the team were so welcoming. From the moment they picked the phone up to discuss us having the camping weekend with a group of people to when we left. They could not have done more to ensure that our weekend was a success as well as being relaxing and hassle free. It will be a wonderful weekend that we will always remember.
Service at its best
We arrived on easter Friday, fantastic welcome from the girls.. given a really useful guide booklet, as it turns out...very useful and personal to the camper... they gave us good ideas what to do and where while on holiday...the added experience was Jules personal delivering a fire pit and logs every night to our tent.. what a great touch. ..and even took the time to get to know us personally. Having camped on many sites the amenities were very clean and the showers were great and hot..great family atmosphere.
Run out for gas, which on site they had replacement.. otherwise we would have been freezing with no food..
we experienced storm Katie on Sunday night/morning...it was that bad we vacated our tent and slept in our car....at about 4.30am Steve drove round on his buggy to check every one was ok and if we needed anything.. if you want customer service, you couldn't wish for anything better..
Fantastic welcoming site, looking forward to going back.
Just got back from 5 nights here. Really loved the campsite and the laid back atmosphere. Jules and the team were great. They were always there with a smile - so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The loos are pretty basic but functional. There's a separate area for teeth cleaning which is good and the showers are great. Location-wise it's just a short, traffic-free walk into Cheddar. But the best bit about camping has to be the camp fires!
Quiet and relaxing
Lovely retreat (February) close to Cheddar, relaxed friendly atmosphere from owners and other guests alike. Brilliant for stargazing.
Can't wait to go back
They advertise as Free Range Camping and that is exactly what this is. Open fires, a very friendly reception and nice hot showers. In a beautiful spot just a short walk in to Cheddar. We went with another family and between us our 4 boys aged 2 & 4 and this was exactly what we were hoping for. Lots of space for them to run and play and use their imaginations. Just perfect!
Thanks to Jules and the Team for the most lovely weekend here at Petruth Paddocks. Stayed for the Reef weekend in my little campervan along with my dog and we both had a wonderful time. The camping was ideal and the facilities were always spotlessly clean and tidy. Great to be such close walking distance to the Gorge and amenities, yet it was quiet and chilled at the site itself. So refreshing to be somewhere where common sense reigns, not draconian rules and regulations! Definitely on my list of places to be revisited, loved it!
Fab fab fab!!
We took our 3 & 5 year old girls camping here for the first time last weekend. Coming from Bristol we didn't want to travel far so Cheddar seemed like the ideal place. We also wanted somewhere peaceful to camp, where we could amuse ourselves without the extra expense of evening entertainment venues etc! Jules and the team were so helpful, providing us with a handy camping guide booklet & offering rides for the kids on the quad bike trailer whilst delivering logs to those who wanted to build camp fires. The kids enjoyed having the freedom to run around & watch the horses in the neighbouring paddock and had fun climbing about on the old land rover. We all enjoyed BBQ's and toasting marshmallows on the campfire and we couldn't have had better weather! The lovely hot showers were great for for me - one home comfort I cannot go without!! :) There is a great pizza delivery service delivering direct to your tent and a couple of shops (plus a cash point), approx 10 mins walking distance from the campsite via a foot/cycle path (with a little kids park along the way!). The following day we went for a walk through Cheddar Gorge (stunning views!) and took the kids to the old fashioned sweet shop to watch the sweets being made. Both well worth a visit. Hope to camp at Petruth Paddocks again next year!. We all had a fantastic weekend.
Best Ever Camp Site
A friend recommended this site in July and during August/September I have camped with Jules and the team at Petruth 3 times. Each time has been wonderful, relaxed and so so chilled out. The team are all friendly and welcoming, the laid back atmosphere makes for making great friends with your camping neighbours (several of which I am now in touch with regularly). The allowing of a real fire makes a massive difference, after a day of walking round Cheddar or the many other surrounding interesting places it is wonderful to get a fire going, light the bbq and relax with a few drinks. It really has become home from home for me and cannot wait to go back. Even Biba, my dog, relaxes totally when we are there. Keep up the good work Jules & Team and hope to see you soon. x
Had a great weekend here when we stayed with a group of friends in our camper van. The site was very clean and tidy and they would come around every day to make sure everything was ok. Great to be able to have camp fires especially when it's a bit chilly in the evening! We would highly recommend this site and will definitely be returning. Keep up the good work guys, see you soon.
We have just returned from a great weekend away with friends. What a relaxed and friendly place. Jules is so welcoming and the idea of having next to no rules makes you want to be on your best behaviour because you want to not because you've been told you've got to. The location is ideal as it feels like you're in the middle of nowhere but within 10 minutes walk you have all the things you need that you have forgotten to take with you.......
We will without a doubt be going again to enjoy the hospitality and freedom this site offers.
Jules you have got it spot on. Thank you !
Where kids can be kids
We had a lovely stay in one of the Tipis with our three children aged between 11 and 15. Apart from the excitement of sleeping in a tipi, it was great to watch our kids enjoying the kinds of things that we did as children without having to worry about them. They disappeared off round the site clambering around and making friends, joined in with the crowd of children "assisting" with the log round, loving being towed in a trailer behind a quad bike. Jules was so welcoming of them and never made them feel in the way but allowed them to "help" him, whether it truly was a help or not!
The highlight for us was the hours spent chatting with friends around an open fire, toasting marshmallows, life's simple pleasures.
Petruth Paddocks is a lovely escape into a time gone by with exceptionally welcoming and accommodating owners.
We have stayed here twice now with our try's trusted T2 camper van and our two boxer dogs. This is one of the most relaxing sites we have been on with wonderful views. Jules and the team make you feel so welcome and the dogs just love it. The camp fires are an added bonus and make chilling out in the evenings so good. We would thoroughly recommend this campsite to anyone especially if you have travelling pooches :-)
