Labourham Drove, Cheddar, Somerset, BS27 3XW
Following it’s 2005 appearance in the television series Seven Natural Wonders, the craggy cliffs and dazzling caves of Cheddar Gorge were voted the second greatest natural wonder in the UK, and it doesn’t take an expert to see why. As you follow the windy riverbed road along the former route of the Cheddar Yeo, steep green slopes carve ever deeper before you and one can’t help but wonder how it looked with water thundering through. In fact, the river does still flow, now far beneath the surface, and its handy work has continued below ground, carving out spectacular caves and narrow limestone tunnels. It’s not until you reach the village itself that the water reappears, slithering away from the beautiful Mendip Hills. It is here, on the doorsteps of Cheddar Village, that Petruth Paddocks can be found and its open grassy meadows beckon any would-be camper inside.
Down a track to the wooden gateway, campers, glampers and caravan towers alike arrive directly into a large open field, fronted by a small white reception tent and a pair of picnic benches. After a chat with easy-going Jules, the site becomes your own and it’s entirely up to you where you pitch. Chose from the plentiful space before you, with two pre-pitched tipis at the rear of the field, or head through a gate into the next-door meadow, aptly described as the ‘chill-out field’. At its centre, a dilapidated landrover has become every child’s playground, saddling up in the drivers seat or clambering on the bonnet, while to one side a horse paddock nudges the edge of the campsite, another distraction for playful children.
The relaxed, pitch-where-you-like, attitude continues through the rest of the site, which rightfully prides itself on a laid back philosophy and welcoming atmosphere for all. Music is welcome, balls can be kicked around, and campfires are very much encouraged, with a quad bike humming around the site each evening offering more firewood and kindling to those in need. Don’t be surprised when the trailer comes past with as many children as logs on the back – the quad is a popular ride with the little ones!
In the centre of the site, by the gate between the different fields, simple sanitary facilities are provided. Hot showers are housed in spacious cabins, so there’s plenty of space to hang your clothes, with an adjacent toilet block on one side and washing up sinks on the other. There are also a number of drinking water taps dotted around the site.
From your pitch head by foot, bike or car into the surrounding area, stopping at reception to grab some info and brochures. By foot, it is Cheddar that beckons, with a collection of good eateries and the gateway back into the gorge. Those on two wheels should follow the Strawberry Line, an excellent cycle route that starts within meters of the campsite. Taking the car offers plenty to see and do, whether it be historic Wells' magnificent cathedral, Glastonbury Tor or the beautiful beaches of northern Somerset.
The Owner SaysPetruth Paddocks is a relaxing campsite where anyone can visit and feel immediately at home. A live-and-let-live place where there are refreshingly few rules, kids can be kids, campfires are encouraged, music and bad singing are not a problem and people feel free to wander round making new friends. Petruth Paddock is on the doorstep of Cheddar Village and Cheddar Gorge – voted the second greatest natural wonder in the UK. Cheddar Gorge is packed with tons of activities such as rock climbing, abseiling and exploring the caves and learning about the heritage and history of this fascinating natural feature. Fantastic place and great for kids & dogs
I took my children aged 2 & 5 plus my shaggy dog for one nights camping over the weekend. We were made very welcome straight from the beginning and my two boys and the dog had a great time smiling and laughing from the moment we arrived until the minute we left. Such a great environment for kids and they can’t wait to return for our next adventure. The camp fire went down a treat as did the friendly people who were camping around us. Please don’t change this place it needs to remain the same forever!
We went for a long weekend and had a fantastic time. Even though we arrived late (if you arrive after 8pm you have to ring ahead and let them know) they were still welcoming and friendly, driving us around the site to help us find a good spot and delivering the stuff for a fire right to our door. The facilities are great- the showers and toilets are clean and there are plenty of them. There is also a hot food and drink stand on sight which does pretty yummy food too if you don't want to cook! Cheddar is just a ten minute walk through residential streets from the sight so easy to navigate and there is a play ground on the way which is great for kids. On Sunday's there is also a massive car boot in the field next door which is definitely worth a walk round. If you have any questions at all the team will be more then happy to help with anything!
Best place ever
Stayed over the second bank holiday in May 2018, this was our groups 2nd visit, and again we were not disappointed. The children were free to just ride their bikes and run around, you just knew they were safe. The ethos is to just pitch up, kick back and relax, and that we did. Joules and the team are very friendly and welcoming, a real family business, nothing is too much to ask. We love that we can have a camp fire at our pitches. The addition of the food van and coffee hut for this summer is a great addition as take always close fairly early in town. Love that you can just walk into town and explore Cheddar. There is a real festival feel about Petruth Paddocks, the showers and toilets are regularly cleaned and staff are constantly sorting tidying or seeing to customers needs etc. I would highly recommend this site for those that don't mind a no thrills camp site, but the best that life has to offer. Love this place and shall be back again soon.
Very friendly & relaxed
Just had 2 nights at this very friendly & relaxed site. Close to Cheddar but still beautifully rural. Lovely staff, good facilities, on site coffee and food if you don’t want to cook, nice scenery, fires in washing machine drums an interesting idea (lends itself to more flexibility on where to pitch). Having said that we were told where to pitch but only after discovering what kind of group we were and whether we wanted to be with the young kids or towards the “later bedtime” end of the fields! Great attention to detail. Would definitely visit again.
Not as described
I was looking for a "back to basics" camping experience, and to a degree we got it, but in all the wrong ways. An overcrowded site, with over stretched facilities. Queuing for a urinal was an experience I thought only for festivals. I raised this with the owner, only to be told it was due to the bank holiday! What ever the date is, over crowding a campsite is putting profits ahead of campers. Not impressed. Feel let down and would never go back.
Convenient camping for cheddar
My family and I had a 3 night stay in a pre-erected bell tent over the bank holiday weekend. It was very busy, as expected, which meant a bit of queuing for loos, showers and washing up facilities but the waits were never too long. I was very impressed how clean they kept all the facilities and delighted with the hot, powerful showers. The staff were very friendly and happy to help out. As the site was so busy, I was a bit anxious it might be noisy after dark but all was peaceful. The coffee bar and the hut selling bacon butties did make this a bit more like glamping There are lots to do in Cheddar for all ages, even in the rain, so no need to venture further afield. Cheddar is only a 10mindrive away so it is easy to pop back and forth if needed The downside is that the site is very big and when it was busy it did feel like camping in a car park! Having said all that, there are plenty of reasons to recommend this site.
Atmosphere, Fun, Great Staff
Stayed here for a few nights, campsite was well maintained and staff were really helpful. There was a good almost "party" atmosphere in the site we stayed in but they also have another area for people not wanting to listen to other peoples music and drinking. All music stops at 11 anyway. They bring round wood (at a price) have shops, coffee stands, food, showers, toilets etc. All is well maintained. Just a few minutes drive from the gorge too, walking will only take you about 15 minutes. Great stay even given the sub-par weather.
This is not a “live and let live” campsite. Too many rules, pushed together in a rectangular field resulting in it feeling you are in a car park. Way too many people for the facilities. We were ordered quite aggressively to turn off our music at 22.00 (despite signs displayed that indicate music off at 23.00). The whole place prioritises making money (expensive food, kid’s activities) over creating the “free range camping experience “ as advertised. Should NOT be in cool camping book.
A pleasant site with a fun and relaxed atmosphere, well located for coatal or inland adventures!
My second stay at Petruth Paddocks and both occasions has been a pleasant and relaxing holiday, I can see us returning many times in the future. Its a lovely site, not too far from the coast or inland adventures. The amenities are well located and of a good, clean, quality. The staff were friendly and helpful. Thanks team!
A fantastic site
A fantastic campsite. Nothing too much trouble for the guys. You get a really handy booklet with all you need to know about your stay and local amenities, also got us a nice discount locally when we had a puncture in our air bed. The kids loved being taken round the campsite on the Quad trailer, and the old jeep is a great meeting place for the kids. Close to Cheddar Gorge and Wookie Hole for great days out Will definitely look to stay again. Thanks guys
Great campsite ..great experience
We had an an amazing couple of days. Not been camping for years and hubby and little people never been so was a tad on edge. Perfect is all I can say!! Will be back !!
Genuinely the real deal :-)
We stayed here for two nights on a grass pitch with a dog. On arrival (especially if you don't know Cheddar) it looks like a campsite on the edge of an Industrial Estate but it's well situated for the town and the gorge and is flat and grassy and with lovely views of the Mendips and the gorge itself. The family run team are laid back but very well organised and the site offers far more than most that we've stayed at (you can even charge your phone in a locker so no real need for an electric pitch). We had clear skies and saw the Perseid Meteor Shower, an unforgettable experience whilst sat around the campfire (washing machine drum fire pits supplied by the owners). Will be back with the children and our bikes. Thank you!
If Only All Campsites Were Like This!
Our family had a fantastic couple of nights staying here in one of their excellent shepherd's huts. We're not great campers (hence the shepherd's hut - and our surname's "Crook"!), so were especially grateful of the friendly assistance we were given when we proved incompetent at getting our BBQ lit, amongst other things. May have even changed our general opinion of campsites as this was relaxed, friendly and very comfortable - despite the rain! The toilets even had Dyson Airblades and potpourri!
Friendly and peaceful
We arrived for our first visit in july 17.within about 45 mins of arriving a cheery guy introduced himself to us as jools.the owner. We spent a while talking and he explained about the facilities, the family run business and to shout if there was anything at all that we needed. Really lovely to be greeted so nicely.reception took time to explain about local cycle routes.great fresh eggs daily laid by the families hens.had a great bike ride and a wonderful anniversary meal at the local thai restaurant recommended by the team.really enjoyed the visit.definately going back very soon.
Just an awesome place.
Been here several times over the years and really can't fault the place. We always bring the dogs and all of us have a truly lovely time. The fire pits are a great addition to an amazing time and we certainly can't fault Jules and the team. So friendly and professional who want you to enjoy your stay and ask that you merely adhere to their relaxed rules. So worth a visit. 5 out of 5 from us.
I've just enjoyed my second stay at Petruth Paddocks and, as before, it didn't disappoint! We had a large group of 17 and had the most wonderful, spacious area to set up our camp. The views are gorgeous, the facilities are great, and Jules and the team are so welcoming and friendly. It's peaceful for such a large site and there were never any queues for the toilets or showers. It's easy walking distance from the town centre and gorge, and an added bonus was that the ground made it easy to get the tent pegs in! There's great wildlife around too - horses, cows, sheep, llamas, alpacas, birds... and make sure you take a trip to the Cider Barn, which is accessed via a lovely walk through country lanes. Highly recommended!
Couldn't ask for more!!
Had a wonderful time, such a relaxed and chilled atmosphere,I forgot 2 air beds at home :( and had a complete melt down, but within minutes of arriving on site we had 2 camp beds delivered to our "door" :) along with a fire drum, kindle, paper, matches and logs couldn't ask for more. We took the quick walk to the village and after kids 15-7yrs got an ice cream from an amazing shop which had so many flavours, they decided they wanted to head back and sit around the campfire :) we didn't get to see much of the village as they didn't want to leave campsite. Everything about the campsite we all enjoyed including the great staff!!! 👏
Quiet and relaxing
Large site where you are left alone with staff nearby if needed. Great open spaces that was just chilled. Facilities great. Loved that you have camp fires on offer every nigh, great touch. Will return.
Relaxed & chilled
No 'don't' signs here ! Friendliest staff. Very basic toilet block, but overlooked by the whole ambience of this place. The fire pits are a must, trust me.
We generally enjoyed our stay at Petruth Paddocks. The facilities were decent and the position of the site was great - being able to walk to Cheddar Gore was Fab! We had an electric pitch which was a nice bit of luxury and was good to have a pitch on the edge of the field by the hedge There was a relaxed feel to the site with a degree of control - be prepared to have your rubbish bag searched to check you've recycled!! It was a shame that by Friday night they had packed so many campers in, and there were not really enough toilets etc.to cope with the number of people there. It was of course a bank holiday weekend so you can understand, to a degree, that they would make the most of that. It was described as Free range camping but bays were marked out and people told where to camp. This may however have been due to the fact it was Bank Holiday and they were incredibly busy. Would recommend this site but perhaps not on a Bank Holiday - unless you love the festival feel!!
Lovely chilled out weekend
A group of 7 friends stayed here for my birthday celebration - really chilled out, toasting marshmallows on the fire, singing along to a couple of us playing the guitar. The facilities are nice and clean, everything you need, and it's only a short walk to Cheddar Gorge which was a treat! Nice atmosphere and very friendly. Will definitely stay again if in the area.
Our New Fave Campsite
Stayed here for 3 nights after a recommendation from a friend. Not disappointed at all. Lovely site, great location and very friendly people. Will definitely stay there again.
10 out of 5 stars!!
I've never been the biggest fan of camping but this place definitely changed my mind! An amazing atmosphere which is well worth the price! We only stayed for one night but we both wished we had stayed for longer. I loved how relaxed the place was and it really helped me to espace from stressful life. I would stay again in a heartbeat! I felt to welcome and well catered for. Can't wait to return!! :)
Felt right at home!
A very chilled out place to stay, the staff were always about and very helpful and friendly. We rocked up and set up camp how we wanted it with no silly restrictions on space or what we were pitching. Facilities were to a good standard and the fact that we could have a little camp fire and all the bits and pieces were supplied at a very reasonable cost, delivered right to your door! I'd go again for sure. We didn't have kids with us but the ones that were there seemed to love it, especially the trailer rides that took place daily :)
10 year wedding anniversary - great fun
We celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary at Petruth Paddocks. Jules, Kelly and the team were so welcoming. From the moment they picked the phone up to discuss us having the camping weekend with a group of people to when we left. They could not have done more to ensure that our weekend was a success as well as being relaxing and hassle free. It will be a wonderful weekend that we will always remember.
Service at its best
We arrived on easter Friday, fantastic welcome from the girls.. given a really useful guide booklet, as it turns out...very useful and personal to the camper... they gave us good ideas what to do and where while on holiday...the added experience was Jules personal delivering a fire pit and logs every night to our tent.. what a great touch. ..and even took the time to get to know us personally. Having camped on many sites the amenities were very clean and the showers were great and hot..great family atmosphere.
Run out for gas, which on site they had replacement.. otherwise we would have been freezing with no food..
we experienced storm Katie on Sunday night/morning...it was that bad we vacated our tent and slept in our car....at about 4.30am Steve drove round on his buggy to check every one was ok and if we needed anything.. if you want customer service, you couldn't wish for anything better..
Fantastic welcoming site, looking forward to going back.
Just got back from 5 nights here. Really loved the campsite and the laid back atmosphere. Jules and the team were great. They were always there with a smile - so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The loos are pretty basic but functional. There's a separate area for teeth cleaning which is good and the showers are great. Location-wise it's just a short, traffic-free walk into Cheddar. But the best bit about camping has to be the camp fires!
Quiet and relaxing
Lovely retreat (February) close to Cheddar, relaxed friendly atmosphere from owners and other guests alike. Brilliant for stargazing.
Can't wait to go back
They advertise as Free Range Camping and that is exactly what this is. Open fires, a very friendly reception and nice hot showers. In a beautiful spot just a short walk in to Cheddar. We went with another family and between us our 4 boys aged 2 & 4 and this was exactly what we were hoping for. Lots of space for them to run and play and use their imaginations. Just perfect!
Thanks to Jules and the Team for the most lovely weekend here at Petruth Paddocks. Stayed for the Reef weekend in my little campervan along with my dog and we both had a wonderful time. The camping was ideal and the facilities were always spotlessly clean and tidy. Great to be such close walking distance to the Gorge and amenities, yet it was quiet and chilled at the site itself. So refreshing to be somewhere where common sense reigns, not draconian rules and regulations! Definitely on my list of places to be revisited, loved it!
Fab fab fab!!
We took our 3 & 5 year old girls camping here for the first time last weekend. Coming from Bristol we didn't want to travel far so Cheddar seemed like the ideal place. We also wanted somewhere peaceful to camp, where we could amuse ourselves without the extra expense of evening entertainment venues etc! Jules and the team were so helpful, providing us with a handy camping guide booklet & offering rides for the kids on the quad bike trailer whilst delivering logs to those who wanted to build camp fires. The kids enjoyed having the freedom to run around & watch the horses in the neighbouring paddock and had fun climbing about on the old land rover. We all enjoyed BBQ's and toasting marshmallows on the campfire and we couldn't have had better weather! The lovely hot showers were great for for me - one home comfort I cannot go without!! :) There is a great pizza delivery service delivering direct to your tent and a couple of shops (plus a cash point), approx 10 mins walking distance from the campsite via a foot/cycle path (with a little kids park along the way!). The following day we went for a walk through Cheddar Gorge (stunning views!) and took the kids to the old fashioned sweet shop to watch the sweets being made. Both well worth a visit. Hope to camp at Petruth Paddocks again next year!. We all had a fantastic weekend.
Best Ever Camp Site
A friend recommended this site in July and during August/September I have camped with Jules and the team at Petruth 3 times. Each time has been wonderful, relaxed and so so chilled out. The team are all friendly and welcoming, the laid back atmosphere makes for making great friends with your camping neighbours (several of which I am now in touch with regularly). The allowing of a real fire makes a massive difference, after a day of walking round Cheddar or the many other surrounding interesting places it is wonderful to get a fire going, light the bbq and relax with a few drinks. It really has become home from home for me and cannot wait to go back. Even Biba, my dog, relaxes totally when we are there. Keep up the good work Jules & Team and hope to see you soon. x
Had a great weekend here when we stayed with a group of friends in our camper van. The site was very clean and tidy and they would come around every day to make sure everything was ok. Great to be able to have camp fires especially when it's a bit chilly in the evening! We would highly recommend this site and will definitely be returning. Keep up the good work guys, see you soon.
We have just returned from a great weekend away with friends. What a relaxed and friendly place. Jules is so welcoming and the idea of having next to no rules makes you want to be on your best behaviour because you want to not because you've been told you've got to. The location is ideal as it feels like you're in the middle of nowhere but within 10 minutes walk you have all the things you need that you have forgotten to take with you.......
We will without a doubt be going again to enjoy the hospitality and freedom this site offers.
Jules you have got it spot on. Thank you !
Where kids can be kids
We had a lovely stay in one of the Tipis with our three children aged between 11 and 15. Apart from the excitement of sleeping in a tipi, it was great to watch our kids enjoying the kinds of things that we did as children without having to worry about them. They disappeared off round the site clambering around and making friends, joined in with the crowd of children "assisting" with the log round, loving being towed in a trailer behind a quad bike. Jules was so welcoming of them and never made them feel in the way but allowed them to "help" him, whether it truly was a help or not!
The highlight for us was the hours spent chatting with friends around an open fire, toasting marshmallows, life's simple pleasures.
Petruth Paddocks is a lovely escape into a time gone by with exceptionally welcoming and accommodating owners.
We have stayed here twice now with our try's trusted T2 camper van and our two boxer dogs. This is one of the most relaxing sites we have been on with wonderful views. Jules and the team make you feel so welcome and the dogs just love it. The camp fires are an added bonus and make chilling out in the evenings so good. We would thoroughly recommend this campsite to anyone especially if you have travelling pooches :-)
