Bell tents and shepherd’s huts with hot tubs on a picturesque Cotswolds farm near Cirencester

Don’t expect a big sign directing you to the T Barn shepherd’s huts or campsite. This is the Cotswolds where everything, including the area’s latest camping and glamping site, is tasteful and subtle so as not to intrude on the charm of England’s largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Instead, you receive detailed instructions from your host, Eloise, which help you navigate from the honey-stoned pub in the village down hedgerowed country lanes to the right field on the right farm.

Shepherd’s hut guests go one way, campers and bell tenters another. There’s a meadow for each at opposite ends of the 850-acre dairy farm the site calls home. The idea to keep them separate is a good one; preserving both seclusion for the adults-only shepherd’s huts and the sociable feel of the family-friendly campsite. Let’s head there first. It’s a simple site and you see yourself in. There are three bell tents, a handful of pitches and facilities which are set up for the season. The bell tents are the easy option here; comfortably furnished for four, with bedding included too. It’s all off grid but the basics are covered and campfires are allowed with a stone-circled fire pit per pitch.

Over at the shepherd’s hut site, there’s no sharing of facilities – each hut is en suite, self-contained and, best of all, has its own wood-fired hot tub. They are luxurious but, like the campsite, off grid, which encourages couples who stay here to relax, reconnect and immerse themselves in nature. In this location, that’s not hard. There are no buildings or roads in view; just the field and the trees of a neighbouring woodland. Look out for mistle thrushes and the resident barn owl who’s often spotted swooping by.

The farm surrounds the tiny village of Barnsley and it’s a 10–15 minute walk from both meadows to The Village Pub (that’s it’s name – honest). It’s got a nice garden for summer, roaring fires for winter and a great menu whenever you visit. And, of course, this is the Cotswolds so there are longer walks, other lovely pubs and plenty of swoon-worthy villages starting at neighbouring Bibury. It’s said to be one of the most photographed spots in the Cotswolds and claimed by William Morris to be “the most beautiful village in England”. If you’re coming with kids, they may not be quite as beguiled but, don’t worry, there’s horse riding and cycling, too, and South Cerney Lake where you can sail, kayak or paddleboard until it’s time for your next campfire.

Nearby

Barnsley sits within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so there are plenty of picturesque villages to explore starting with Barnsley itself. Neighbouring Bibury (three miles away) is even more picturesque and one of the most photographed places in the Cotswolds. Walking and cycling through the villages and countryside is usually enough to keep people entertained here and there are lovely views up the lane from the campsite, which makes a nice place to walk. For an easier way to get around, hire electric bikes from Cotswold eBikes at nearby Abbey Home Farm (and maybe pick up a picnic from their farmshop at the same time). For horse riding, there’s Talland Stables (01285 740155) and for adventures on water head to the Cotswold Water Park (nine miles away) where you can swim, fish, paddleboard, kayak, canoe or sail. South Cerney Outdoor (01285 860388) offers lessons and hire.

Food & Drink

You can pre-order a breakfast hamper for delivery on site or buy eggs from the farm. Shepherd’s hut guests and bell tent campers also have the option to order dinner or afternoon tea hampers. The Village Pub (01285 740421) and Barnley House Hotel are a short walk from the huts and summer camp. Your hosts also recommend The Stump (01285 707780), an hour’s walk or a 10-minute drive away, for sourdough pizza or rotisserie on Sunday. Bilbury, the neighbouring village, is three miles away and a great spot for an ice cream by the river and don’t miss the burgers at The New Inn (01285 750651) at Coln, also walkable in an hour-and-a-half (five miles from site). To stock up on supplies, head to Abbey Home Farm Shop (01285 640441), three miles away, for local produce or drive 10 minutes to Cirencester for supermarkets and shops.

Getting There

Whether coming from Cirencester to the south or Burford to the north, the village of Barnsley is reached on the B4425. Once you are in the village there are different instructions for each part of the site and Eloise sends out detailed instructions after booking.

Getting to the T Barn shepherd’s hut or campsite by public transport is possible but takes planning. The closest railway station is at Kemble, nine miles from site. From there you would need to take a taxi to site (probably a good idea to book in advance) or to cycle if you’re bringing a bike. Alternatively national coach services stop at Cirencester, a little closer to site. From there, taxis are more easily available or you could take a bus to Barnsley. There are just a few a day and none on Sundays. It’s a ten-minute walk from the bus stop to the camping field or shepherd’s huts.

Loveliest stay in the shepherd's hut

We had such a wonderful stay in one of the shepherd's huts with hot tub. The facilities in the hut are perfect, the bed comfortable and the shower is good too. It is so wonderful to wake up in nature and have breakfast sitting outside with birdsong. The wood fired hot tub was a huge luxury for us and we sat gazing at the stars from the hot tub in the late evening. The breakfast we ordered (standard) was good quality and sufficient food. Thank you for the wonderful long-weekend stay! We hope to be back in the near future.

Gorgeous little camp spot

We only stayed one night but you know when just everything is just at such a great standard. The toilets are roomy, airy and totally spotless. The showers are massive, hot and well designed with views of the trees and plenty of shelving to keep things dry. Showers were also very large and pretty cool actually. The pitches have lovely large raised fire pits. Everything was just great! We loved just sitting on the sun watching the Red Kites and listening to the wind in the trees. We’ll definitely be back for another lovely little escape from London.

Beyond expectations

Situated in a quiet valley near cirencester, the T Barn turned out to be way beyond our expectations. The site is very clean and well maintained, the toilets and showers are in great conditions and there is hot water! We camped in one of the pitches and had the opportunity to have a campfire each night and cook ourselves a nice breakfast over the fire in the morning, which was incredible. Very quiet and peaceful at night, and not to mention the beautiful night sky line and the moon rising above the hills! Would definitely recommend!

Fabulous stay in an amazing area!

This was a beautiful campsite, we stayed in the bell tents which were so nice! Towels, bedding and blankets provided, along with utensils and equipment for cooking and eating. There is literally no signal as soon as you get to the campsite but as long as you are prepared for this it’s really nice to be aware from the world and enjoy the time with other people. Showers are amazing and hot and the toilets were kept clean throughout! Only thing I’d recommend was leaving a list of stuff to do in the tents with the laminated sheets as due to having no service it can be difficult to figure out things to do. Maybe just a useful list of stuff along with a more detailed map :) apart from that we had a fabulous stay and would 100% go back!

Great cosy campsite with top quality facilities

The campsite was amazing, great views and space, would highly recommend. The owners are very nice too. The facilities are in an amazing condition, much better than many hotels. Nice village nearby and other nice walks and activities to do in the local area too. Thanks for an amazing trip, it is highly likely we will come back! Thanks Scott

Lovely site with basic facilities

We stayed two nights and found it a great location. It gets seriously cold at night so extra layers a must. Each pitch has its own fire pit which was great. Compost loos were in clean condition with loo roll provided. Washing up facilities also provided. Peaceful area off the beaten track. Good base for visiting the Roman villa at Chedworth and had good pub grub at Fossebridge Inn. Cirencester nearby for provisions.

Lovely, peaceful stay with family

We spent 3 nights on the campsite with my partner & 2 young children. The site is nicely tucked away in a valley, which means it doesn’t get too windy. Facilities were clean & showers excellent - although they didn’t seem to work on the day we left (yesterday)? Other campers reported the same issue so wasn’t me being thick! The Village Pub is a short walk/ drive away & is very nice. We went to Cirencester for the day which was great, lots to do & we hadn’t been before despite regulars to the Cotswolds. We also went to an old favourite Bourton-On-The-Water. In the evenings we enjoyed having a campfire, looking out for bats and listening to the kites & the odd owl twit twooing.

Quiet and peaceful with clean facilities

We had a lovely few days on the campsite. It is quite a small site in a good location for visiting The Cotswolds. Lots of great walks nearby and some lovely restaurants. The facilities on site were very basic, but clean and the showers were amazing. The camping area is quite small, but the small number of pitches means that it feels very peaceful. You can take a walk up the hill for a great view of the site and to catch the last of the sun (if you are lucky enough to get any!). Limited, if any, phone reception, which I felt is a bonus, but can be challenging if you are trying to plan things to do in the area.

Fab little campsite!

Great little campsite, nice and quiet yet close enough to everything we wanted to do/visit. Loved the fact we could have a campfire. The showers were the best I've ever had while camping! Hot, powerful and clean! The whole site was well maintained and all the info we needed was provided by email so we felt prepared for our stay. Would definitely return!

Amazing!! Highly recommended!

My wife and I spent a wonderful two nights staying in the Shepherd's Hut; Dora! The owner, Eloise, had clearly put so much thought into every aspect of the hut and our stay. We were left wanting for nothing. The only thing we would have changed would have been more time at this gorgeous retreat! The dinner provided was imaginative and delicious, plus, fun to cook. We of course fired up the hot tub and lay there, wine in hand, gazing at the stars! It's back to reality now, but we certainly enjoyed our break from a lovely kids and the 'real world'. We will certainly be going back and highly recommend the T Barn Camping!

A fabulous long weekend!

Thanks for a great campsite! A lovely quiet and picturesque setting, spread out pitches and our own firepit for the evenings made it a memorable experience. Thanks in particular for the best showers of any campsite we've been to (!) and also for the delicious breakfasts - they were great touches and really added to our stay. Our friends had a great time too so we'll be sure to be back. Great walks and pubs a short drive away. Thanks again, and good luck with the wild swimming lake idea!

Thanks Steve! Nice to meet you - next time maybe you'll take the plunge! E

Great camping spot with good fire pits and facilities.

Great campsite, would definitely visit again. Small fire pit per pitch for smaller groups, and a large communal one with a grille. Easy to use. Showers were new, big, clean and had plenty of hot water. Off grid, but these made all the difference. Would recommend the short drive to Bibury and the nearby organic farm shop.

Perfect staycation

The owners have thought of everything you could possibly need. The kitchen is fully equipped and the hot tub is very easy to use. Even though 3 shepherds hut relatively near to each other you would not know as they have built careful fences to make you feel secluded We loved our stay and would recommend. It is only a couple of hours walk to bibury as well!

Response from The T Barn

Thanks Krupali, glad you had a good time x

If you want to decompress in natural beauty this is the place for you.

We had a fabulous weekend decompressing and glamping in simplistic style, off the grid. No phone signal, cooking on an open fire and being soothed by the cows grazing in the pasture. It’s simply a beautiful, quiet spot near the wonderful villages of Barnsley and Bidbury, and 20 minutes from the market town of Burford. The shower block was clean and quirky in design, everyone enjoyed their hot showers. We didn’t need to bring half the stuff we brought, but recommend you stock up your provisions. The campsite only had the 3 bell tents, which are simplistic style and 7 pitches. Perfect and at one with the countryside. We loved our stay.
