Welcoming family camping with campfires and far-reaching views over Poole Harbour and the Purbeck Hills

Naming this campsite was always going to be a no brainer. Set on two south-facing sides of a Dorset valley, campers pitch their tents to a backdrop of rolling hills that stretch all the way down to the Jurassic Coast, with the Isle of Purbeck and hilltop Corfe Castle visible in the distance. When the campfire’s going and quiet calm settles on the folds of the campsite, you can simply sit, relax and take it in.

That said, there must have been other options. They could have called it ‘The Atmosphere’, ‘The Wildlife’, ‘The Campfires’ or ‘The idyllic setting near Dorset’s main attractions’. All would have been equally worthy – if less catchy – names for a family-run campsite where you’ll find all the ingredients for a heady holiday recipe.

There's only a limited number of pitches spread across some 14 acres, so you’re guaranteed plenty of space. Guests can choose the spot they please, in the meadow at the top of the site for the best views of the Purbeck Hills and Poole Harbour or down in a valley glade where there are little wooded nooks and a reasonable chance of spotting roaming deer if you wake early. Campfires are allowed and there’s a relaxed, convivial atmosphere, with family campers and family tents ruling the roost, usually with swimming trunks drying on the guylines after a long day at the beach.

At times, The View can feel like a time warp. If you’ve left the rush of a town or city, you’ll find hours pass here simply doing nothing at all, other than enjoying the chatter of the birds and soaking in the open country space. Don’t worry. That’s natural. The character of the campsite, from the inquisitive goats and Shetland pony to the impromptu musical gatherings with expert instrumentalists, can’t help but make you switch off.

If the vista draws you elsewhere, though, the campsite has a prime location. The best known beaches in the area – Lulworth Cove, Kimmeridge Bay, Swanage, Durdle Door, Bournemouth and Sandbanks – are all within a half hour drive, while Wareham and Poole are a little over 10 minutes. Take a picnic to the latter and catch a boat across the world-famous harbour to Brownsea Island. From there you can try and look back inland and spot the campsite somewhere up to the north. “What are you looking at?” a fellow ferry-goer might ask. “The View”, you can simply say, knowing your secret campsite discovery is safe for another day.

Idyllic, stress-free family break

This was the best weekend family camping trip we’ve experienced. Cathy and Kate were on hand whenever needed and the mix of food and entertainment was perfect. The site itself offered up a variety of views stretching for miles around, and was incredibly tranquil. Our son didn’t want to leave the site in the evenings, loving the communal camp fire and music. He wanted to stay longer! We will definitely be returning.

The best campsite bar none!!

From the second we arrived we were met by Cathy and Kate the owners. They were always on hand be it for a fire pit, a nature walk or anything else we needed. They are simply the perfect hosts. Nothing was to much trouble and I cannot recommend this site enough. It's stunning views are incredible. It's the perfect base if visiting this amazing area. Very close to Poole and Sandbanks and the other way to Corfe Castle or Wareham etc. Please stay at this camp site you won't regret it for a second

A lovely family run campsite

A lovely family run campsite with very freindly staff and clean facilties. Owl talk and show for the children., live music and Yoga. Three dissapointing point's though which keep it from being a five star review: 1) Big one for me: No facilties to throw your rubbish away. Meaning you have to take your rubbish away with you. Bearing in mind you need id with you to take it to a local tip. This leaves you trying to find a local bin or taking it home when you have limited space in the car already, with a family of five. Surely not having this facility on site is promoting fly tipping from some of your customers (not us). Which is going against your/our care of the environment. 2) Cost of fire wood & Fire pits. £5 per bag + £5 per night for the fire pit seems fairly expensive. The kindling supplied isn't enough when the wood supplied is too large. Meaning its takes an age and effort to get it going properly. 3) All fires must be extingusihed by 23.00. Not too sure whether you have some form of agreement with the locals, but this seems unfair when paying such an amount for the pit etc. Resulting in not having alot of time to have a fire in the summer. Appreciate this keeps the noise down, but surely this can be monitored and persons spoken to, if too noisy and not everyone bound by the same rule.

Welcoming, great facilities - Perfect Campsite

I’m so glad I found this place. Kate, Cathy and the whole team are such brilliant hosts. They really couldn’t do enough to ensure everyone who visits enjoys their stay. They genuinely care about letting you have a great experience. What they are doing with the site in terms of eco facilities, special areas of interest, Delicious food, Music, pop up events etc. is so inspiring and they really do value sharing ideas to keep the campsite moving forward. Unfortunately I missed the music evening however will most definitely be returning to this wonderful site. The facilities are spotless and there’s also 3 camping areas to pitch on. What an amazing experience 🙏

Very positive experience

Everyone is so so friendly. Clean and tidy site along with showers and toilets. They've got chicken and 2 horses and my daughter could even feed them which was amazing 👍 Close to Durdle Door, Bournemouth and Poole breaches. Loved it. Thanks 👋

Informal, eco-friendly, fun

We spent three nights at The View and had a lovely time (2 adults 2 kids)! We loved the facilities (both eco-friendly and novel) and the fact the site was spacious and quiet. Fantastic to have a little bar and entertainment on the weekend! Kate and Katherine were brilliant hosts - we could tell they really cared about the site and the comfort of their guests. We hope to return!

Magical, entrancing, loving, personal experience

When we booked the site we knew there’d be a lot to do in the city and surrounding areas but we were not prepared for the level of hospitality and joy we received from our host Cathy and her daughter Kate who not only made us feel welcome from the get go they ensured our experience was unique and really allowed us to just have fun. There was music, delicious food and great entertainment all round and most of all we felt cared for the entire time we were there! Can’t recommend this place enough and will be coming back, my soul needs it.

A special place

We loved our 4 nights camping at The View! It's a really beautiful setting, if the weather's kind you'll get stunning sunsets and see so many stars at night. The facilities are really well thought through and creative (loved showering in a horse box!). Going up to the central campfire at night was great too, we were treated to live music and enjoyed a sound bath. Thank you for having us Kate and Cathy, we hope to return next year!

Lovely last minute break

We have just had a 10 day camping holiday at The View and had a great time. We usually stay at larger holiday park sites but hadn’t been able to find anywhere for this year at the last minute so decided to search Cool Camping and found The View. I was nervous about how different it was to the sort of sites we would normally stay at however it was brilliant and I think I would favour a site like The View in future. If we come back to Dorset we would definitely stay again. The facilities were spotless and the amount of space we had around our tent for our toddler daughter to run around in was great. We didn’t go down to the live music in the evenings, however enjoyed listening to it from our tent. There is a lovely welcoming atmosphere at The View and being able to choose our own pitch was also good. There is so much to do in the surrounding areas from beaches to other tourist attractions. We visited both of the pubs in the village which both served lovely food and were within walking distance. There is also a mini supermarket for essentials supplies.

Lovely friendly welcome Showers should be either end of field not all at one end No food van no entertainment during week makes it a little boring But stunning views As it is new they are learning Pubis not just up road 5 mins in car Directions to site could be more clearer

Homely and good value

Friendly greeting on arrival, enough facilities and nice homely feel. Will be staying again

Great campsite

Loved our stay at the view. Lots of land so perfect for groups with multiple tents. Great facilities and lovely staff. Only thing we would have asked was somewhere to dispose of rubbish or directions to a general waste facility. The recycling centre we were told to go to was not ideal as had to rifle through 3 days of rubbish. Apart from that can’t fault it !

Summer break July 2021

For a new camping site Kate and her team have done really well and are constantly adding improvements. Clean toilets and showers, on-site bar / burger stand. Live music on Friday and Saturdays. Received a warm welcome and the team were always on hand if we needed anything.
