Laid-back and sociable camping on a back-to-basics pop-up site between the New Forest and the Dorset coast.

Take a big field in a prime location, add a handyman and an ex-pub landlady, and the result is Sionna Camping. The field is 10 acres and flat, the location is between the New Forest and the Jurassic Coast, the handyman is Simon, and the former landlady is Donna. See what they did with the name? This place may seem like a simple site but it’s built on love, fuelled by an enthusiasm for camping, and kept clean with an obsessive eye for detail.

Sionna Camping is pop-up camping done well, and that’s not because it’s providing fancy facilities; it’s something more simple than that. It’s because of the 60 extra camping pitches popping up in an area that’s popular in summer — never more so than now. It’s set up in a farmer’s field on the edge of the Dorset village of Burton, ten minutes drive from the southwest corner of the New Forest, ten minutes from the town of Christchurch, and ten minutes from Mudeford beach. Bournemouth is 20 minutes away and, 10 minutes further from the site, is the eastern edge of the Jurassic Coast.

It’s very much a back-to-basics kind of place with portable loos, hand-built shower cabins, open-air washing-up sinks, and plenty of room to run around in. But there’s a little twinkle added by Donna; fairy lights, solar lanterns and a very warm welcome. A lifelong camper, caravanner, and campervan owner, she loves the great outdoors and can’t wait to welcome you to it. So much so, in fact, that she’s popped up a couple of tents for people who don’t have their own. There are two six-man dome tents and a retro house tent which are rented unfurnished, as well as a modern tipi-style tent that’s the glampiest of the lot. Hire this one and everything’s included (except for bedding).

Donna and Simon have made sure all the important things are taken care of, down to your morning coffee. They run a coffee van and bottle bar and have organised easy meals and entertainment for weekends, when there's a bit of a festival vibe thanks to visiting food vans and acoustic musicians who play by the communal campfire. This is a laid-back, sociable site run by laid-back and sociable people; campers themselves who will do their best to make sure you have a good time whether you are camping with your dog, with your family, or your friends. All are welcome here.

Nearby

You can walk from site to the nearby Avon Valley Path to walk the mile-and-a-half into Christchurch on a causeway, next to the water meadows. Alternatively, there are buses from the village into the town where there's a harbour with boat hire or boat trips with United Ferry Services (01202 429119) up the Stour, out to Mudeford Beach or to Hengistbury Head nature reserve (01202 128444).  There are plenty of restaurants, cafés, pubs, and quirky independent shops, as well as a weekly market every Monday and Christchurch Priory to meander around. From nearby Mudeford Quay (three miles from the site) you can go crabbing, grab some fresh shellfish from the local stall or wander along to Avon Beach, Steamers Point, and Highcliff beach. Bournemouth beach is just a 20-minute drive (six miles) away. In the other direction, the edge of the New Forest National Park is just 10 minutes drive. It's also possible to see the sights of the Jurassic Coast on day trips from the site, as it starts less than 20 miles west of the site (a drive of around half an hour).

Food & Drink

The site has its own Beans & Booze coffee cart which operates at busy times as well as visiting food vans: fish and chips every Thursday from 5pm-8pm and a weekend mobile caterer serving breakfast, lunch, and dinners at weekends. There are two pubs serving food within 10 minutes walking distance: The Bear of Burton (01202 477189) and The Oak Inn (01202 471888).

Fantastic!

Fantastic campsite. Owners welcoming and friendly. Live music around a log burner on the night we stayed there. We really enjoyed the acoustic music and the drinks from the horse box bar. Plenty of space between pitches and for playing frisbee, football, flying kites etc. 5 mins from Christchurch town or the river and 10 mins to various beaches or Mudeford key so ideal location. Very peaceful site.

Lovely friendly campsite with lots of space.

We had a fantastic 3 nights camping, loads of space for the kids to let off steam, music on Saturday night, and lovely surroundings. Sionna is a great base for exploring the local beaches, there are two pubs within walking distance and a local shop. Lots of toilets, hot showers, and wood delivered to your tent for the evening fire. Looking forward to returning next year :-)

Stayed 3 nights, nothing fancy just does what it needs , plenty of space for your time there. Toilets all around the field but as there’s no electricity be wary of loos, probably benefit from male/female loos . Showers were hit and miss of hot water but it’s camping after all 😂 owners friendly and around checking the site all day. Would stay again if we come down again 🤙🏼

Delightful, friendly and chilled site

Had a lovely two day stay at this delightful site close to Mudeford Quay and many other beauty spots. Quiet location and two very nice eateries within very short walk, both dog friendly indoors and outside. We would definitely return. We have a 7.5metre moho and no access issues and very clear signage. Delightful!!

Excellent Hidden Gem camp site!

We wanted somewhere near the Jurassic Coast which was off the grid because we didn’t want anywhere too noisy or packed. We got the wrong dates but we’re allowed to stay the 2 nights at no extra cost which was really good of them. The staff were very friendly and very helpful. There were plenty of toilets and even showers. Washing facilities and plenty fresh water. Even though there were a few families , we didn’t hear a thing. We would highly recommend that anyone who wants a quiet holiday to cone here before booking anywhere else!! The village itself is quaint and picturesque and has a pub and restaurant within walking distance. There is also an Aldi a 5 min drive for shopping.

Thank you Karen, we're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay 🏕️
I hope that we can welcome you again soon 💖

Totally brilliant!

Simon and Donna are very friendly and have made the site properly welcoming. The coffee and booze van is a lifesaver as was the burger tent Saturday night / Sunday full English. Not crowded, it's a fabulous site!

Response from Sionna Camping

Thanks so much Alastair, hope that we can welcome you again someday 🏕️

Excellent location just what I was looking for

I loved this place! Off the grid no hassle camping. Ideal if you want to have a couple of nights away without noisy club houses and unruly kids. Bonus fire pit to be able to chill out in the evening. Only thing I didn’t fancy was the showers.

Response from Sionna Camping

Thank you Joanne, really pleased that you loved it here ❤️🏕️
Can't lie, at 1st glance, when Simon was building the showers 🚿 I was a tad apprehensive, but they're actually better than mine at home 🤦 haha & not hot 'n' sweaty like site showers can be.
Hope we can welcome you back again sometime & you can give the showers a try 😃😃 🚿🏕️

Outstanding Service!

The campsite is in a great location, and the amenities were all clean and in good condition. On a very windy day while we were out the poles of our tent snapped and bent, leaving us with nowhere to sleep at 6pm in the evening. The lovely people at Sionna went out of their way to help us, loaning us a tent free of charge so we could enjoy the rest of our stay. They were so helpful, kind and friendly that they made the trip! Thanks so so much!

Response from Sionna Camping

Thank you so much for your lovely review,,, you are a lovely group of people & you didn't deserve the bad luck that day.
So happy that you enjoyed your time here, we hope to see you here again soon 🏕️😘
