A magical riverside retreat near Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.
Few outdoors experiences satisfy our appetite for adventure like a spot of wild swimming. On a balmy summer’s day, there’s nothing quite like a cooling dip in a tranquil lake or sun-dappled swimming hole. Waterside campsites – amongst the most magical of settings for a night under canvas – are rarer than you might expect in the UK. So when we found out about a new undiscovered riverside gem in the heart of East Dorset, we knew we had to dive straight in.
Set on a dairy farm just outside the historic village of Moreton, Frome Meadow Campsite is five spectacular acres bordered by wildlife-rich woodland. Like all things beautifully ephemeral, it only pops-up for the month of August so be sure to book your place post haste. Campers lucky enough to secure one of the privileged pitches in this sprawling space enjoy unparalleled access to the River Frome. Exclusively accessed by patrons of the campsite, this private stretch of the river is perfect for paddling and swimming for the more able (and more cold-hardy!). The current can be quite strong in places and campers are reminded to take the usual common-sense precautions (particularly in the deeper areas), with children needing to be supervised at all times. But with a picnic packed and jelly shoes on feet, the little ones will be content for hours splashing about and spotting minnows and frogs beneath the surface.
With a relaxed ‘pitch-where-you-like’ policy for 14 tents, there’s no danger of overcrowding here. The five acres of heathland are more than ample for a game of rounders and your little novice naturalists can spot all manner of flora and fauna, like hares, dragonflies, kingfishers and even the odd sika deer. For those who like to travel light, there are a trio of family-sized bell tents kitted out with comfy mattresses, lanterns and outdoor seating. Facilities-wise, the site is off-grid and eco-friendly with brand new compost loos, hot showers and a washing-up area. Best of all, campfires are positively encouraged here so you can spend your evening telling tales from the riverbank while toasting marshmallows over the flames under some of the most star-studded skies around.
Follow one of the many bridleways emanating from the site and you’ll soon end up at Moreton. This charming village is steeped in history, with its most famous son T.E. Lawrence (more commonly known as Lawrence of Arabia) commemorated in the heritage trail that takes in his rural retreat and grave at St Nicholas’ church. And if you haven’t sated your watery desires back at camp, the Jurassic Coast – including Lulworth Cove and iconic Durdle Door – is just 20 minutes’ drive away.
The Owner Says
We invite you to camp in the meadows alongside the beautiful River Frome, where you can go wild swimming in this private stretch of the river and cook over a campfire in a peaceful green space normally only enjoyed by local wildlife and the cows.
There is plenty of room to choose your own pitch or you can hire one of three furnished bell tents - take the hassle out of camping and stay in one of our gorgeous tents with comfy beds, colourful rugs and blankets, solar lights and an up-cycled fire pit.
The site has eco loos, hot showers and a washing up area.
Moreton, a popular destination for visitors, is a 15 minute walk from the meadow, from here there are miles of walks and cycle paths. There are many local attractions including Lulworth Cove, only 6 miles way, and lots of pretty Dorset villages to explore.
Although when you are settled in this quiet field in the middle of our family run dairy farm, you may not want to leave.

Camping like it used to be
We booked this quite late- so glad we did.We haven't been camping for a few years since our daughter grew out of it but this year we wanted a real getaway. We've got fed up with huge sites with marked out pitches too close together and toilet blocks the size of Tesco. This was the exact opposite - small site, plenty of space, no noise (except the sound of happy kids, which is fine by us). The eco loos were a revelation and the hot showers a bonus. Lovely bit of river to paddle/swim in, and campfires allowed. The owners were really friendly and obliging with our cool blocks - taking them to their freezer overnight and bringing them back in the morning. The land rover came every day with wood, matches etc and local honey and eggs. You can choose your spot - shady or sunny. The middle of the field had a few bales and the children had a whale of a time on them. Can't think of a more peaceful way to spend a few days.
We're just home but wish we were still at Frome Meadow. The field is beautiful with large hay bales which our children played on for hours on end with their new found friends. We enjoyed looking for kindling and building fires, wandering along the river (was too cold for a swim), and exploring the local area. It's a perfect spot to visit Durdle Door, Lulworth Cover and our favourite, Kimmeridge. Thank you for a fab stay, we'll definitely be back!
Home from Home Glamping
What a rare treat to stay at a 'back to basics' campsite, yes you have eco loos and wooden showers with privacy but everyone we met was beaming smiles and wanted to stay longer and visit again. The children loved the river, the marshmallows on the camp fire and the fact the Dog could get involved too!! Wind down in the evening with a glass of wine by the fire with the tranquil surroundings, this is my kind of heaven! Well done and will see you next year!
Lovely, quiet, great location
The owners were helpful and friendly. The location is super - close to so many great places to explore. The 'pop-up' facilities worked well. We enjoyed the rustic but effective style.
What a beautiful get-away-from-it-all!!
First time camping in over 35 years and was not disappointed. Such a beautiful spot and so peaceful and regenerating. The field is huge so you don’t feel overwhelmed by others campers. The river right on the doorstep is beautiful -perfect for paddling and swimming and there are blow-up rings for anyone to use. Squirrels, hares, rabbits, birds of prey all about. The owners have put a lot of thought into this and it shows. From the spotless drop toilets (toilet paper and hand gel supplied) to the gas powered eco showers, seperate bins for recycling, a washing up area, drinking water tap, firepits dotted around and a teatime visit every day to stock up on logs, kindling, honey etc - they really have done an excellent job. Very nostalgic watching the kids playing every day on the hay bale towers in the middle of the field. Genius and took me back to my own childhood!! The village is a lovely 15 minute walk away across the fields (signposted) and the walled garden and ford are well worth a visit. Had the dog with us and she absolutely loved it!! Some great walks 🐶 We had to unfortunately cut our trip short to 3 days instead of the 4 booked, but would definitely go back next year. Well done and thank you Frome Meadow - you did a great job!! 😀😀
Quiet and relaxing
We had a lovely stay for two nights with our 18 month old. The site is very basic - the facilities consist 3 long-drop loos, two showers, a washing-up sink and a drinking water tap. The toilets were always clean and the showers were nice and hot. There is a beautiful stretch of river just off the main camping field, suitable for padding or swimming, and in the middle of the field are some hay stacks for the children to jump around on. It's a perfect place to get back to nature, and enjoy some quiet relaxation time. There's loads of space for the kids to run around safely. There are also plenty of places to go for days out in the area, the nearest beaches are less than 20 minutes' drive away. I'm already looking forward to coming back next year!
Such a lovely location and great experience
Campsite was great wish I could have stayed longer, I will definitely go back.
Close to nature
We loved this well set up and well run campsite. Plenty of space and a nice atmosphere. We swam in the river, watched shooting stars, saw buzzards overhead and an owl flew over our heads as we sat round the campfire. The walk to Moreton through wild flowered lanes is very pleasant. A real delight.
Great campsite and river was fab
Great set-up with clean long-drop loos, hot showers. The best bit is the riverside location. My girls loved getting into the two huge inner tubes (put there by the owner for guests' fun) and floating down the river. The water is clear and not too deep but real fun for kids that are allowed an adventure. My girls loved the experience so much that getting them to leave the campsite and go to the beach was a challenge. There's also some haystacks where the kids play and jump about. Overall, a simple and lovely site that gets you back to nature and what life is all about. Good luck with the venture - you have made a great start!
Being a total novice we booked a bell tent and it was delightful. V comfortable and everything you could wish for. Definitely coming again next year!
Booked Frome Meadow on a whim, and was not disappointed. Lovely owners and a lovely flat site. Loads of space for everyone, and of course the river. Toilets and showers both excellent - don't be put off by the "composting" - we were there during the hottest part of August and they were still smell-free. Return visit next year? Definitely.
Very quiet and peaceful
Access to river is fab
Ticks all the boxes
Had a fantastic 3 night stay at Fromme meadow . Location is great, close enough to all the main Dorset sites. The owners were friendly and welcoming. The camping area is perfect, lots of space for our dogs to run around . The fire pits on site are a great touch. The river is beautiful, deep enough in places to swim and shallow enough if you just want to paddle. Hope to return again next year
Fantastic peaceful meadow
We stayed for 2 nights on the meadow, it's beautiful and peaceful with plenty of space and a great atmosphere. The kids loved the red toilets and warm showers and the hay bales to climb on. The river was great for paddling and there were great beaches to visit close by. The walkable village of Moreton has some lovely gardens and tea rooms. Highly recommended and we hope to come again.
Peaceful and beautiful, camping at its best!
My boyfriend and I booked this as a 3 night getaway. I am so, so pleased we did! The family run campsite is beautiful right next to a stunning river, the meadow wasn't packed full of tents, there was enough room so you felt like you had your own space and the showers and loos next to the cornfield were great. Firepits were provided and you were able to buy logs on entry. Amazing value for money and we will definitely be back next year. Thank you so much for a fantastic trip. (The site is within 20 minute drive of all the main sights of Dorset but we found most evenings we actually just wanted to be back by the meadow). Can't thank you enough!
Amazing campsite, fantastic location
We have just spent two nights in one of the lovely bell tents, and could not have wished for a more peaceful and relaxing weekend. The tent was beautifully presented and had very comfy beds; the river at the bottom of the site was amazing fun for children, adults and dog. Toilets and showers etc. all immaculately clean. The owner Christine and her son Matt are really friendly and helpful, with regular delivery of logs and excellent local knowledge! We will definitely be staying again next year. Thank you!
