Back of Beyond
Back-of-Beyond Touring Park, Ringwood Road, East Moors Lane, Dorset BH24 2SB
At first there seems something amusingly incongruous about the name ‘Back of Beyond Touring Park’. For starters it’s just off a convenient A-road and a few miles from popular destinations like The New Forest and Bournemouth. Then, of course, there is the fact it is a ‘touring park’ – a fear instilling title for any canvas campers trying to avoid static caravans and hyperactive kids. Pull up to the barrier though (the fear continues; it even has a barrier) and you’ll be very pleasantly put in your place.
Back of Beyond is a truly exquisite little site. It’s as though the title of ‘touring park’ is a devilish charade simply put there to maximize your surprise. Yes, there is a large field that hosts a collection of caravans but pull around to the left and you discover their separate tenting areas of ‘The Warren’ and ‘Emma’s Glade’ – the latter a designated area of Special Scientific Interest with no electrical hook-ups. These spaces have a more informal vibe and are a short stroll from the three heated toilet blocks, while just beyond the hedge spreads a pair of quiet fishing lakes rippled to life in the mornings by a signet swan drifting along the surface.
Campervans wanting to cash in on the same secluded atmosphere can join the tenters in these meadows. Or take to the main park area with 80 spacious, electrified hook-ups. Wherever you go this adults-only site means peace and quiet is a happy guarantee. Of the 30 acres, 18 acres of this site is mature woodland, where mixed pine and native trees are specifically managed for conservation and, rather than hunting for twigs in the undergrowth, the campsite provides briquettes for the firepits you can hire – you don’t need kids to enjoy marshmallows and a little melted chocolate!
Offsite, the place is a gateway to the Jurassic Coast but if you’re trying to avoid the car it’s an accessible area by bike. Affable owners Martin and Victoria have bags of local knowledge and can arrange cycle hire if you need it. One of the best (and most gentle) routes is to pedal a mile beyond the site and join the Castleman’s Trailway, a 16 mile route that runs from just north of here down to Poole. It largely follows the old Dorchester to Southampton railway line where, conveniently, a handful of decent pubs lie – stop of in Wimborne Minster to see the magnificent cathedral.
The Owner SaysSpread over 30 acres of Dorset woodland, river, heathland and lakes, Back-of-Beyond is reached via a quiet country lane and meanders over countryside naturally inhabited by a wide variety of wildlife: look out for deer, squirrels, moles, rabbits and the soaring sights of birds including the resident woodpecker. Only 80 pitches are allowed among all this undisturbed space and, even better for the stampede of liberated parents we can almost hear as we type, the park is adults-only.

Beautiful quiet site
This is the second time we have camped at Back of Beyond and loved it both times. The staff are very welcoming and friendly, check in is quick and you get to choose your pitch. We had an electric pitch in the tent only section. The site itself is very well maintained and facilities are clean and showers are hot. The pitches are a very good size, and you don't feel too close to your neighbour. There is a pizza van that comes on a Friday night and fish and chip van on a Saturday which is great if you feeling lazy!! There are plenty of walks around the site including around a large lake or the woods. The site is a short drive from Bournemouth and Poole, both a a good day out. We cycled on the Castleman trail from the site to poole which is 36 miles in total but it's a great day out the the trail is mostly flat and lovely to cycle on. The second time we cycled to moors valley which is 5 miles from BOB. I would highly recommend this site and we are already planning our next trip!!
Exceeded Expectations - A Fantastic and Peaceful Campsite
As you approach Back of Beyond Touring Park on the busy A31, you wonder how this site could be anything close to tranquil. By the time you drive half a mile off the beaten track and arrive at reception, your concerns have disappeared. You're confronted with an impeccably-kept field, a well-stocked reception and fish pond. The staff welcome you here better than most top-end hotels and even walk you around the site pointing out the different locations to help you choose the pitch that's right for you. Access to the site is via a vehicle barrier, which you’ll be given a fob for (remember to bring a £10 deposit). At weekends, caterers offer pizza and fish and chips from reception - we brought food to cook so we didn't try these, but the pizzas were very popular and the couple on the pitch next to us shared their chips with us. A selection of croissants, pain au chocolat, etc. is also available for breakfast if you order it by 6pm the night before. There are electric and non-electric pitches as well as Emma's Field, which is a tranquil dog-free area near the lakes. It's easy to see why this site has the 4-star AA pennant and the GOLD David Bellamy award for conservation. Through the evening, you can spend hour watching the wild rabbits in the fields. The pitches themselves are generous - we could have fitted two cars and our 3-man tent on the pitch we chose, and some pitches are probably as big as the London flat we were escaping for the weekend. As the man at reception said when we arrived, “We know you work hard, so if there anything you need, don't hesitate to ask. This is your weekend and we want to make it as relaxing and peaceful as possible for you." The toilet, shower blocks, laundry and washing up areas are spotless and extremely well-equipped. One of the male shower blocks, for example, has five sinks, each with its own shaver power-point, and the shower cubicles have enough benches and hooks to ensure that none of your clothes or bags get an unintentional shower. The atmosphere on the site is excellent - this being an adult-only site, you can tell that everyone is here to relax and people are respectful of that. It's a shame we were only here for two nights - we managed to visit Studland Bay, which is just over an hour away by car, but there was plenty more we didn't get around to. We loved our stay here and we'll definitely be back, only next time we'll make sure it's for a week or two. I can’t praise our experience here enough, it exceeded all of my expectations.
Lovely site, A*
We have just come back from a weekend at this beautiful site, feeling totally refreshed. Easily reached from the A31. We were welcomed by the members of the team with a smile and information of the site. There is a book swap and dvd hire in a pretty little wooden building with a honesty tin. The first thing you notice is how big the pitches actually are, they were the biggest we have ever stayed on! And no children (nothing against children but it's nice to have the option) just the noise of birds and the occasional dog bark as they greet each other. The dog walking area is in a large fenced wooded area that leads on to the 'pitch n putt', (could do with a little grooming). There is no on site café but they do have mobile caterers come on site, no cooking! while we were there, on Friday was pizza and Saturday was fish n chips. There was a small shop that catered for your basic needs but there is a supermarket a small car ride away. Would recommend this site to everyone who want peace and tranquility, can't wait to stay for the bank holiday in August!! See you soon!
Wonderful stay in the fox glove bell tent
We have just arrived back from a wonderful few days at the back of Beyond. We stayed in the bell tent monday-friday. This was our 3rd stay at the camp site having pitched our own tent twice before in Emma's field. We cannot recommend this site enough. If you are looking for a bit of peace and tranquility on an adult only site then look no further. We always leave refreshed and revitalised after a few days here. The facilities are always clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. The croissants are also an added extra. The bell tent itself was roomy and the bed comfortable. It had most things that you would need however it may be worth bringing some matches or a lighter for the stove and don't forget a torch just in case especially if walking back from the pub at night as the track is pitch black! We are already planning for our next trip and cannot fault it... a bit of heaven 👍😀
It will change your view on touring parks!
This site will change your view on touring parks!
It has great showers and toilets, it's own woodland and pitch & putt, it allows campfires and the shop is packed with everything you need. Great touches like the pre-order of food on some nights are great ideas (I think it was Pizza or BBQ for a set price on our stay).
My husband and I were desperate for a couple of nights camping at the beginning of August 2015. I booked very last minute and we bundled the gear in the car and headed South. After an exhusting few weeks at work and a horrendus journey we arrived with some trepidation at Back of Beyond. All we could see were caravans at first but they very friendly staff pointed us in the direction of the field and we both silently trundled off wondering what we would find...
Well, we entered a woodland glade sunny and dappled with shade. It was a busy weekend but there lots of alcoves so you can pitch up without feeling too on top of anyone else. Perfect. More campers arrived over the evening and next day but at no point did we feel it became too crowded.
Lovely flat, sandy soil made pitching a dream.
In the early evening they came round and supplied you with a fire pit and a box of fuel, bliss, nothing beats a campfire.
The shower and toilet block were spotless all weekend (did I mention it was a busy weekend). You could actually have a great, hot shower without getting all your stuff soaked! The shop sells everything! We had manged to forget a few things in our rush to leave and they had everything we needed, There is a good self service coffee machine too.
There are lakes and a woodland attached to the site which are really lovely to wander around in. Perfect if you have a dog with you (I think you camp in a different part with a dog, or if you need electric hook up...)
The New Forest isn't far, it is a really convenient spot. Yes you are fairly near to a big main road but this didn't bother us at all. It just made the journey easier.
I would absolutely recommend this site. We were away for two nights but felt so refreshed like we'd been away for longer.
Great holiday, great site! Thoroughly recommended!
We had a fantastic 9 night stay during the first two weeks of this month and the weather was very kind to us with no rain, which was an added bonus! We wanted somewhere that was peaceful and child free, with good facilities. This site ticked all the boxes on the website and reviews and we were not disappointed during our stay.
A personal tour of the site on arrival and the option to choose from a number of good size pitches for our tent was a very welcome change.
The toilet/shower blocks were always clean with plenty of hot water and we had no problem with availability.
The site had nice woodland walks, a challenging pitch and putt (but don't have great expectations about high quality greens and be prepared to lose lots of balls!) and a really tranquil area with a couple of lakes.
Lovely fish and chips from the van that visited site one night, but we missed out on the pizza van which ended its visits for the 2015 season the weekend before we arrived! :-(
If you want to hire bikes, the sites recommended hire company (Kool Cycles) is unbelievably good value at £20 per WEEK! It might take a couple of attempts to make contact, but it's worth the effort!
The Back of Beyond team were always friendly and helpful and we understand there are plans to develop the site further!
We will be recommending you to anyone wanting to visit the area!
P.S. Martin, you'll be pleased to know the car is now clean!!
What a Great Find
This is a nice open site with good facilities and very friendly staff
We were allowed to pick our own spot
Lovely and peace full, site with no children, Very dog friendly
Great walks through their private wooded area, where they have laid out pathways with woodchip, nice little golf course.

Always a little nervous about new sites but we needn't have worried our two dogs and we too loved it.Absolutely immaculate throughout and all were very friendly and helpful.
Missing the peace and quiet already now we are home stunning views and wildlife would definitely visit again!!!
My husband and me visited the Back of Beyond with our dog last month. The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful. We were allowed to choose our pitch and were delighted with parkland and woods. Our dog enjoyed the freedom of the extensive woods and walkways. We could have stayed longer and will be back! Thanks for our enjoyable visit and the fire basket to keep us warm into the evening.
Great site with friendly owners
We visited Back of Beyond in May this year and found a calm, relaxing site with friendly owners and wardens keen to help us when we needed advice. There is plenty of pitch space (we have a large van) and the on site environment is lovely. Well located for the new forest, bournemouth and dorset. We'll be back.
